monday business (open)

Post by Fye on Sun Aug 12, 2012 11:09 pm

Monday dawned much the same as any other day--Fye had gotten perhaps a bit more sleep than usual, having closed at the earlier Sunday time and getting up at his usual to start baking. Monday mornings, he'd make coffee and sell it as well--he had to grind beans for the mocha cake anyways, might as well make some money on the side selling fresh brew to the workers coming in.

His routine was the same as the other days, if a little more replete with the scent of coffee, and Fye settled behind the counter with his own cup, to settle and wait for today's business.

Akuji woke feeling rather tired and starving for some breakfast. She had rolled out of bed, changed, and made her way to Emberwheat for something filling to eat. The bell chimed as she walked in and saw the baker calmly waiting for his customers to slowly start arriving for breakfast hour. The air in the bakery was always scented a delicious scent of pastries, bread, and other confectioneries that made her stomach rumble. Today wasn't very different. The smell of coffee was also in the air and Akuji didn't mind treating herself a little more than usual due to her recently obtained bounty money.

"Good morning," she nodded looking through the menu. Monday meant there was no buttercream cake, but then again there was many other delicious substances that could replace it. "May I have a slice of rye, a piece of the seasonal fruit pie, and could that be coffee I smell?" She eyed the menu again and spotted the curry meat bun, Seems like I'll be back for dinner.

Nolli stretched in his one piece maintenance uniform and walked lazily down the sidewalk having no idea where to go, for he lived in the East District. The city had given him barely any notice when they put him to work at three in the morning (on the opposite side of the Substratum, nonetheless). However, even if he'd been assigned to the East District today, it would've still been challenging to find anywhere that was open this early in the morning. The sun had just barely crept over the horizon!

Finally on break, Nolli decided to take the opportunity to explore West District and hopefully find something to eat. Wandering aimlessly, he soon came upon a solid brick building with a brown and beige overhang. The large display window read, "Emberwheat Bakery." Sounds pleasant enough...and it's actually open too.

The second Nolli entered, he was flooded with delicious smells that wafted from the kitchen area. His stomach growled loudly. Slightly embarrassed, he looked around to see if anyone had heard. The only occupants of the building were a white haired woman around his age and a slightly older blond man behind the counter drinking a cup of coffee. If they noticed, they didn't seem to pay any mind to it. He waved to both of the politely and found an isolated corner seat on which to sit. Upon reading the menu, his mouth began to water and his stomach grew even more demanding. "Excuse me, sir," he said addressing the Blond man behind the counter, for Nolli assumed that his behind-the-counter status meant he worked there, "can I please get a mocha cake and curry meat bun?" Nolli paused, trying to remember what else. "Oh and, do you serve tea by any chance?"

Fye yawned into his book (motorcycles today; August's bike was having problems again) as he waited--if anything, it was always the waiting that took it out of him. Actually baking, fighting, action--that was fine. That was all adrenaline and action, no time for thought.

He glanced up from his book as the bell chimed, eyes landing on the blue-haired girl from a few days ago; he nodded in return to her greeting, dogearring the page he was on currently and closing his book so that he could serve her when she placed her order.

"Blackberry today. Coffee is ten cents a cup." He stood, crossing the room to fetch out a loaf and slice it, returning for the pie and setting both on the counter, waiting for her to respond in an affirmative or negative for coffee--in the meantime, another customer came in, lingered in the corner, and eventually placed an order for a slice of mocha cake and a bun.

"No tea, sorry." He didn't usually serve drinks with the baked goods--it was enough of a hassle to get all the baking done in the morning. Maybe if he had employees other than himself.... He placed the plated slice of cake and bun on the counter.

Akuji thought for a moment and then nodded to the coffee, ā€œIā€™d like a cup please.ā€ She leaned against the counter and waited for her order to be prepared. She moved out of the way for the man who had walked in a few moments after her. Judging by his outfit, she assumed that he was on his way to work.

Akuji rubbed her temples at the thought of work. She had decided to take a B-ranked mission in the south and this time it was a harbinger, too. Sometimes she wanted a break from all the stress, but the closest thing she could get to it now was visiting the bakery.

The sun was beginning to rise.

At the blue-haired girl's nod, Fye turned, ducking into the kitchen, the door swinging close after him, to pour a cup of coffee, filling up a sturdy thick-ceramic mug with the steaming liquid and bringing it back out--he held it for a second as he bent, fetching out a tray from underneath the counter, and set her plates atop it, adding the mug of coffee last and then leaning over to the cash register, ringing her up. "One forty-five."

Accepting her money, he traded her for a receipt before turning his gaze towards the man in the room, patiently waiting motionless for him to decide.

Re: monday business (open)

Post by Tank on Mon Aug 13, 2012 6:13 pm

Monday mornings, usually were not the best days for the general population. It was a day that started the work week for most, along with ending any fun that the weekend provided. Tanya would have agreed, considering usually on monday mornings she was up before the sun rose and was out mixing cement for her day-job. At night she would be at the Red Door pouring drinks, and breaking up fights until past three, and then it would start all over again. Some days she only at to worry about showing up for one of her jobs, which were days she caught up on sleep. It was rare that she had a day off, and even rarer still did she not have to work on a monday.

Today was that rare day.

Catching the earliest train she could into the West District, she took out her phone to call her mother when she had gotten the closest stop she could before walking the rest of the way to her mother's home, and where her baby boy lived. Exchanging a few words with her mother, she learned that her son was not up. The child was not a morning person, but since she had the time she volunteered to grab breakfast for them. Which seemed fortuitous as she snapped her phone shut and found herself standing right in front of a bakery.

Through the tinted lenses of her sunglasses, she gave a passing look on the inside of the bakery. Biting her bottom lip before giving a broad smile and walking into the shop. Pulling the glasses up to rest on her head, her neon green eyes looked at the cakes on the display case before taking a deep breath of the smell of freshly baked bread, and coffee. She seemed to give a sigh of contentment her lips pursing as she stepped forward, her hands stuffed into the pockets of her jacket before glancing over at the man that was in the room before looking at the cashier. She raised a brow smiling at him her hand coming out of her jacket as she gave a short wave. "Hi."

Fye's eyes flicked from the other customer to the door as it opened, the bell jingling; Fye silently examined the woman that came in--he hadn't seen her here before. As she came closer, he noticed that her eyes were a bright shade of neon--and, with a sense of faint surprise, that she wasn't much shorter than him. Huh.

He nodded mutely in return to her greeting, quashing his curiosity--now was not the time and place to ask where she was coming from and if she was new to the area--raising one eyebrow instead as if to ask what she would like to order.

Tanya had straightened her posture as she got a good look at the cashier's eyes. Her brows furrowing for a moment, before her lips giving a quirk.

A Harbinger.

For some reason she always felt more relaxed around other Harbingers. Just because they would not see her as someone to be afraid of just simply because her eyes were a different color. Her smile quirked into a grin as she looked down at the display case before clearing her throat. "Two melon buns, four curry buns, and..." She bit her bottom lip looking at one of the smaller mocha cakes. "Do you do special orders? For birthdays that is..."

Her gaze turned back to Fye, eyes wide with the question before she smiled at him. "I'd like to order a birthday cake that is... My four-year-old is going to have a birthday. Or well... He had one. But he's getting excited because he's turning four and a half." She gave a chuckle, thinking about how important that half was to her son. She pursed her lips still smiling at Fye, knowing that this all sounded rather silly but, she did not see her child everyday. She did not have the luxury. She had done what she needed to keep him safe though. She would do anything to keep him safe.

Fye nodded once as she placed her order, bending to reach below the counter to grab a box and assemble it--he assumed she was ordering to go, as most people didn't usually plan to eat six buns in one sitting. Lining the box with wax paper and loading in the buns, he nodded. "I take special orders." He added in the last bun, taking the box back to the counter after closing the display case, closing and taping it up before taking a notebook and pencil out from his apron pocket, flipping to a new page, eyes fixed on the woman, a single eyebrow raised, waiting.

She raised her own brow at him, mimicking his look before giving a shake of her head. "Not a morning person? Or not a friendly person?"

Tanya had been expecting him to give her details on how to order, along with costs and types of cake that they did. That had not happened though, so she was left with looking at the box of buns. He seemed like the sort that just did things without being told to do them. Sometimes that was a good thing, but to Tanya it just seemed like he was bored with her. "I'm sorry if I'm wasting your time, and all but if you'll give me some information on how I order a cake, then I'll just pay for my buns and go."

Fye exhaled through his nose, wrinkling it slightly in thought, and then replied, "Not much of a talker."

Then he twirled the pencil between his fingers in thought, eyes going a bit unfocused as he considered what he was about to say, and added, "You tell me what you want your cake to look like. How many layers. What flavor. What you want on it. Any other details. Your name, when you need it by, then I give you an estimate." A pause, then. "I'm the owner. I do all the baking." Finished with his speech, he fell silent again, pencil having migrated over the backs of his fingers as he spoke, ending up behind his ear, notebook lowered, face otherwise blank, patiently waiting.

"A smile would be nice though."

Well that was what she needed. She looked at him for a minute, seeming to weigh his words. Not just simply what he said, but how he said it. It was concise. Used as much words as he needed to, nothing more and nothing less.

She really hoped these buns were good, because his warm demeanor certainly did not make her want to come back her.

"First I'd like an estimate for price. Don't know if I'll have enough, so don't want you to take the order when I can't pay for it." With two jobs, and supporting mostly her mother and her child out in the West District, she did not always have a lot of extra money to throw around. "A simple two layer, round cake. Small. About enough for three people. Chocolate on the inside, white frosting on the outside. With dinosaurs decorating the edge... If you can." Her eyes looked to the right as she tried to think if she should add anything else to that description, before giving a short nod. "Just want it to say, "Happy Half-Birthday Hunter"." She looked back up at him, raising a brow at him before smiling. "What kind of damage will that give me?"

Nolli had been contemplating whether or not he wanted coffee. Just as he was going to place his final order, a woman his age entered bakery. She went up to the blond man and asked for several buns and a birthday cake for her son. The exchange seemed normal enough, but Nolli thought he might've sensed a bit of tension between the two. Trying to be as unobtrusive as possible, he got out of his seat and started with, "Haha, sorry to interrupt but, if there's no tea than I'll just take a cup of coffee when you have a sec." Normally he wouldn't have intervened but he was on a schedule and he only had half and hour, give or take a few minutes.

As he headed back to his seat, he thought back to the man's earlier comment, oh man, he does all the baking, that must be pretty tough, wonder if he needs any help... Not that Nolli had any help to offer though. Perhaps he'll ask about it later. Just as he was sitting down, Nolli had a sudden realization. "Ah crap, speaking of cakes, mom's birthday is tomorrow..." he muttered to himself. Maybe, he'll order a cake and pick it up after he was done with work. He looked up at the counter not wanting to interrupt again. I'll just place an order later... but I do agree with that one lady, a smile would be pretty nice... ha ha.

"Haha, sorry to interrupt but, if there's no tea than I'll just take a cup of coffee when you have a sec."

Fye's eyes flitted from the woman to the other male, and he moved, putting the notebook back into his pocket and turned, going into the kitchen to fill a cup of coffee and returning, setting it down with the man's order and ringing him up.

"A smile would be nice though."

He acted like he didn't hear her--telling someone to smile more when they already weren't in the mood for it, especially for Fye, was like asking him to voluntarily shut his foot in a door. Instead, he pulled out his notebook again, turning back to the woman and waiting as she apparently made up her mind. Fye flipped down the pencil from behind his ear as she started talking, jotting down notes on the paper--a smallish cake then, for only a few people, chocolate and whipped--no, buttercream was probably better. And dinosaurs... he snorted and smiled just a little as he considered it, wondering who the cake was for, his absent, distracted thought answered a moment later by the woman's next sentence, the baker's distracted half-smile growing just a hair larger at the words--a child then. Small family gathering... he paused, staring down at the paper, then looked upwards at the woman, expression fading back into smooth neutrality, all business again.

"About ten credits," he replied, flipping the pencil up to tuck behind his ear again.

Akuji pulled the money out of her pocket and took the receipt before sitting down. She took a sip of her coffee and turned her head to glance at the newly arrived customer when the bell on the door jingled once more. Judging by the other parties neon green eyes, she assumed that the female who just walked in was a harbinger. She turned back to her coffee and bread.

Akuji bit off a piece of the rye bread as she turned to look out the window. They rye bread was a lot better than she had expected. She wasn't much of a bread fan to begin with, but she certainly changed her mind after the rich taste exploded in her mouth. The bread was slightly sour and had plenty of rye seeds embedded into it. She wondered how the bread would taste with some butter.

The blackberry pie was just as delicious as the bread. It was fruity and just sweet enough. Akuji licked her lips, finished the rest of the coffee, and nodded goodbye to the baker. She had work to do if she wanted to come back for dinner in time.

Everyone always looked better with a smile on their face.

She had seen it on Fye's face when he had jotted down notes, and she thought that he should smile more. It was just a thought though. People had to find their own reasons to smile. This man was very to the point, and concise with everything that he did. He would not smile unless he wanted to, or he had a reason. But, you can always find a reason to smile.

Now when it came to what the price was. She blinked at him furrowing her brows confused at the price before giving a short laugh. "Just ten? Really?" That seemed a rather low number for what she asked. She had expected something over twenty dollars at least. She bit her lip as she thought a moment before tilting her head, "You sure you don't want to ask for more? I mean... I can pay more."

She was not that strapped for cash.

Nolli took his cup of coffee and thanked the man working there with a small nod. Upon returning to his seat, Nolli took a few cautious sips of coffee. Perfect temperature, amazing flavor. This coffee is excellent... A content look appeared on his face. He looked up to see the woman place an order for a cake. Dinosaurs... eh? Perhaps she has a son. Nolli continued to watch the exchange, all while absently sipping his drink. Did he just smile... Nolli focused on the baker curiously. Nah, must've been my imagination...

"About ten credits," the baker said to the woman.
"Just ten? Really?" The woman paused, "You sure you don't want to ask for more? I mean... I can pay more."
Nolli set down his cup, leaned back in his chair, and let out a content sigh. I'm definitely coming back... even if it is super outta the way. After a few seconds, he rose to pay for his order. He stood behind the woman and looked at her curiously. He decided to awkwardly make himself part of the conversation, "Do you have a son?" He had no feasible explanation for his curiosity. "I have a little brother who loves dinosaurs," he chuckled, thinking about his bizarre family.

The chime on the door jingled. Nolli turned back to see that the light haired leaving the bakery. She was so quiet, he'd forgotten she was there. He rose his hand to politely wave goodbye, even though she was a total stranger.

Her eyes turned to look at the new face. Smiling at him she gave a nod of her head, "Four, and a half, next month."

She rubbed the back of her neck, giving a short laugh at the mention of dinosaurs. "He seems to find them fascinating at the moment. Will talk your ear off about them if you allow him," Which he has multiple times when she was with him. This of course started after he had turned four, and she had gotten him a picture book filled with dinosaurs. So in a way it was her fault, but she did not mind. It was nice to see his eyes light up with excitement, and to see how proud he is whenever he drew a dinosaur with his crayons.

She glanced over at Fye before giving a shrug, "He's a good kid. Smart... stubborn. Been told he's turning into a heartbreaker at an early age." Too much like his father.

She bit her lip before clearing her throat and offering her hand out to Nolli, "Tanya." She looked over at Fye, "Tanya Duarte, is the name for the order. And, I'd like it two weeks from today." That was the next time she'd be in the West District, and have the day for her family.

Nolli sensed the conversation about her son was bringing up something that could be potentially uncomfortable to talk about, so he decided to drop it. The woman continued. "Tanya."

Nolli took Tanya's outstretched hand and shook it, "Pleasure meeting you Tanya, my name's Nolli Sharma." He smiled, glad the conversation hadn't ended in a complete train wreck.

Tanya looked over at the man behind the counter. "Tanya Duarte, is the name for the order. And, I'd like it two weeks from today." Oh yeah, mom's birthday. I almost forgot. Nolli turned to address the quiet baker. "That reminds me, I'd like to place an order for a cake as well!" Nolli scratched his chin and chuckled nervously, "this in kinda on short notice, but if I could pick it up by the end of today that would be great." He backpedaled, "But if you can't, I could totally pick it up tomorrow or find somewhere else if you're too busy!" Nolli secretly hoped the baker could make the cake, but he wasn't expecting much since there was such little time.

Nolli looked down, feeling as if he was forgetting something. I had a question... what was it again...Oh! That's right. "I was also wondering if you were looking for any help by any chance. Like maybe a part-time position or something, Mister--." Nolli stopped, realizing he had no idea what this man's name was.

He shrugged a shoulder, eyes momentarily flicking away from the woman's. "I keep things cheap. You want to pay more, you can." He wouldn't be as comfortable with taking it, but if she really wanted to, then he couldn't really protest.

So thinking, his attention was diverted by the other man, who evidently had finished his meal and come up behind the two of them, addressing a question at the woman--Fye listened, not exactly in any position to not overhear, that smile creeping back onto his face. Four and a half--then this was the celebration of a half-birthday? Kids. Whimsical as all hell.

The smile disappeared as quickly as a rabbit down its burrow when the woman glanced over her shoulder though, the blond instead busying himself with writing down her name and when she needed the order by, nodding once to state that he understood. That was plenty of time to make a trip down to the South district and have August make him some smaller cake pans.

Fye glanced back up as the man spoke at him this time, wanting to order a cake--
"This in kinda on short notice, but if I could pick it up by the end of today that would be great. But if you can't, I could totally pick it up tomorrow or find somewhere else if you're too busy!"--he nodded cautiously. As long as the order wasn't too complicated, he could probably manage.

"Might be able to, if it's not too big," he hedged. "Need details for a better estimate."

"I was also wondering if you were looking for any help by any chance. Like maybe a part-time position or something, Mister--."

He blinked once. "Fye. Fye Kingston. And I.... could use the help." For the first time that day, an emotion besides blank neutrality infused his face--a sort of uncertainty made his brows furrow slightly and his nose wrinkle. "Sometimes it gets busy. A pair of hands or two would be welcomed."

Re: monday business (open)

As Nolli was conversing with Tanya (whose back was now turned towards the baker), he noticed a small smile playing at the baker's lips when Tanya mentioned her son. It was small, but Nolli definitely spotted it out of the corner of his eye. So he has a sense of humor. Nolli grinned.

The baker's little smile vanished the moment Tanya turned her attention back to him. What an interesting guy.

In response the Nolli's cake request the baker said, "Might be able to, if it's not too big," he hedged. "Need details for a better estimate."

Nolli's face brightened at the news. "That's great!! Thank you!" Nolli thought for a moment, taking his family into consideration. Leaving himself out, the cake would need to be large enough to serve eight people. Two of his three pairs of grandparents were diabetic and had a bunch of other old-people-problems, so that left two who could actually eat cake. His youngest sister was too young to eat solid food, so that left his four other siblings and his parents. "The cake needs to be big, but it doesn't have to be pretty." His family would devour it before they even got the chance to sing "Happy Birthday." It would be a waste if it was pretty. "As for size, whatever you think is best for a family of eight gluttonous cows. I'll leave the flavor up to you, anything is okay as long as it tastes great" Nolli's family did not discriminate against any type of food. "Oh, and can you write, 'Happy Birthday, Mom' across the top?"

"Fye. Fye Kingston. And I.... could use the help." A look of uncertainty flashed on Mr. Fye's face. So much emotion for one day, Nolli sarcastically remarked to himself. Nolli assumed that Fye was the stoic type that tried very hard not let their feelings show. Fye continued, "Sometimes it gets busy. A pair of hands or two would be welcomed."

Thinking it over, Nolli discovered that he was actually more available than he'd previously thought. Hmm...it's not like the city gives me a lot of hours. And my family could use the extra cash... I do like it here even if it is pretty out of the way. "Alright! If you don't need any prior bakery experience, sign me up!"

Well it seemed everything worked out.

Although Fye Kingston, did not really seem much like a people person he was willing to do the order. She could pay right now also the ten dollars he wanted along with for the buns. She would give him more than ten dollars of course, she did not know Fye Kingston. He did not owe her anything, and she would not owe him anything, so twenty dollars is what he would get for the small cake she'd be requesting.

She nodded her head at Nolli, "It's a pleasure to meet you." She turned back to the counter seeing the box of her buns before grabbing for her phone in her pocket to check the time and giving a wince. She had to get going if she wanted to be there when her baby woke up. She smiled at Fye, "Do you mind if I pay for the cake today, along with the buns?"

Fye exhaled through his nose. "You can work the register, then." He flipped to a new page in his notepad, jotting down notes for this second cake. "When will you pick it up?" If it was around the end of a typical working day... five PM, he had about twelve hours in which to make it in between helping customers... he could probably do it in that usual dead spot between noon and when the schoolkids got out....

"Do you mind if I pay for the cake today, along with the buns?"

"Go ahead." He slid the notepad into his apron pocket, tucking the pencil behind his ear once again, and punched numbers into the cash register, the aged machine clattering to itself. "Sixteen credits." Whether or not she was going to pay him extra didn't cross his mind again until after the words left his lips, upon which he mentally grimaced--but he didn't say anything. The same way he recognized it was a flicker of pride that disliked him taking extra money for his work, the same way he recognized that it was a flicker of pride that made her want to overpay him. Maybe she usually had money problems? Or maybe she was just a naturally generous person.

"You can work the register, then." Alright! Another job! Nolli's grin grew even wider.

"When will you pick it up?"
Nolli thought about his schedule for the rest of the day. He was scheduled to get off of work at 9:00 AM, but he'd probably hang around West District for the remaining hours of daylight. Wanting to give Fye as much time as possible to finish the cake, he said, "I can come back around 6:30 or 7:00 this evening."

He watched as Tanya and Fye discussed her order. This reminded Nolli that he still had yet to pay for his. Waiting until the exchange was over, he asked Fye, "How much do I owe you?" From the back pocket of his work clothes, Nolli produced a forest-green, leather wallet with a pig design running down the spine. On the front cover, was an orange and white target with a deer head in the center. On the back was the same target, but with a very realistic depiction of the backside of the aforementioned deer. To anyone with normal sense, the wallet is probably one of the ugliest things they'll ever lay eyes upon.

"Oh and, when should I start work, boss?"
