fat cats and hobos [ trevor + kiev]

Post by Tora on Wed Aug 15, 2012 4:33 pm

The incredibly fat furry thing glared up at him. Trevor’s first thought was that thing must’ve been loved a lot. It was white with a few light brown spots; most of the animals he saw in the south were strays, mangy things that were questionably rabid. He crouched down in front of the cat; toanyone passing by it looked like he was in a staring match with the animal. He wondered who it belonged to. It looked…really fluffy. He didn’t have the best experience or relationship with animals. Dogs seemed to like him well enough but cats were a completely different story. He heard cats were intelligent creatures and he didn’t doubt it, maybe they knew he was a harbinger by some animal instinct and that was the reason they seemed to attack him on sight.

Didn’t stop him from trying though. He reached out a hand tentatively to pet it, slow and steady…. The cat hissed and its fur stuck straight up. “Ow.” The cat had locked his teeth snapped firmly around most of his hand. It didn’t really hurt that bad but he felt his hopes fall.

So he was a loner a heart to some extent. It wasn't something he could really help, it was just a thing that seemed to occur in the natural order of his life. After all, there were definitely some good reasons as to why he preferred to tough it out in the alleyways of the southern district by himself. However this, by all means, did not mean that he didn't get lonely here and there.

It wasn't something he liked admitting most of the time. Kiev didn't think a lot of himself, nor of pride or his own self-confidence, but there was definitely something that prevented him from going, 'hey. I'm lonely. I should do find someone to change that."

Problem: Kiev was shy.

Solution: Cats.

Okay, he was an animal person. He really liked animals. In fact, he loved animals. He loved cats, birds, dogs, lizards, basically anything that could move and imitate intelligent life. And fortunately for him there was an abundance of stray cats scattered all around his little homely section of the district, something that made him quite a happy kiddo when the nights were long and cold.
Charming the furry ragamuffins was an easy task; the way to a cat's heart is through their stomach after all.
There was one he held in particular respect however; an exotic shorthair that reminded him vaguely of toasted marshmellows. and with a face that was squished up as fuck in that mass of white and tan fur. So fucking cute. And just as fucking feisty. It took the longest fucking time and, like, two weeks worth of spare scraps for the thing to adopt Kiev and, well, a few dozen bites and scratches too.

Honestly, Kiev thought he'd be the only one to even give that much of a shit about the shorthair.

But apparently not.

He walked into one of the back alleys near the factory, peering curiously at the new face and-- oh. He got bit.
Kiev grinned a little under his bandanna as he approached the guy from behind. He was taller than him, but seeing something as harmless as a big fat cat bite him with little to no resistance was a pretty comical scene to him.

Kiev crouched down, a bag in one of his hands. The cat seemed to notice the familiar rustling of brown paper and immediately went to his side, mewling and rubbing against the boy's leg before Kiev pulled out some leftover sausage from his lunch. He hand fed it to the cat and glanced up at that guy with little to no emotion in his eyes.

Huh. What was he doing here?

He probably should’ve tried persuading the cat to let go of his hand before it started bleeding but he never could hurt an animal despite how vicious it was. His biggest weakness probably. Trevor would’ve been there for who knows how had not someone else come into the alley behind him.

A boy, teenage by the looks of it. The cat almost immediately relinquished its prey for the other boy, purring like the sweetest thing against the boy’s leg. It would’ve been a lie if Trevor hadn’t felt the tiniest bit of jealousy that this boy was a lot better with animals than he was. He stared at the pair of cat and boy for a moment, noticing that both the kids face was a mirror of the blank expression he himself owned.

He stood up from the crouched position, hiding the injured hand in his pocket; it would heal, though at a normal speed than when he performed his job. The boy was blocking the end of the alley and pushing past him would’ve been rude…

What little communication skills Trevor had were useless and he just stared, not even in eye contact with the boy, but at the cat. God he really wanted to pet that thing even if it had possibly taken a chunk of his hand.

He could tell the guy was hurt. Puffdragon was a feisty thing he knew, and he was usually really fucking cranky whenever he was hungry. It was easy enough to tell that whoever this person was just became Puff's nth victim for the week, and no, not because he saw what happened. He didn't really understand it, but for some reason he could feel the instinctual urges of his cat in just the slightest ways.

Of course, he'd just say it was one of those weird gut feelings. Whatever.

Kiev looked back up at the stranger and could tell he probably wanted to pet Puffdragon. No one could resist Puffdragon, anyway. It was practically mathematical. 2 + 2 = 4. Person + Puff = Pets.

So he stayed crouched like that, quite purposely blocking the other's path as he stroked Puff's soft fur for a bit before he stood, allowing the cat to finish his meal.

Uh. Ok. How to do this.

He opened his mouth to speak--

--No.
Talking felt weird. Not gonna do it. So instead he took out a little scratchpad, frowning:

You can pet him. He won't bite anymore. He's only bite-y when he's hungry.

He then showed the male the notepad before dropping his hand back to his side when he allowed enough time to read its contents.

Another note:

His name's Puffdragon.

Oops maybe he was proud of his cat. Just maybe.

Was he really that obvious? He leaned down to see the scribbled writing on the paper being shown to him. This also caused him to question whether the kid was perhaps mute or otherwise. He didn’t doubt the kid’s words per say, but cats hated him in general, regardless of state of hunger.

Another note, this time introducing the cat’s name. Puffdragon… it was both an odd name and incredibly fitting. If there was absolutely one thing that Trevor was adamantly stubborn over it was his insistence to keep trying to befriend the furry animal despite his every terrible experience with one in the past.

He crouched down yet again, a new look of determination in his eyes. His hand reaching out slowly… fucking. Success. He didn’t smile, he never did but if this were a cartoon, angels would be descending from the heavens, playing holy music for this long awaited moment of Trevor’s life when which he finally gets to pet a fucking cat.

“Soft…” The word barely audible as he stroked the cat intently with a completely blank expression.

Hahaha.

Somehow watching this newbie befriend Puff was incredibly amusing for Kiev, and he was grinning widely underneath his bandanna. It was also pretty endearing in a weird way, the way this guy seemed to exude a sort of determination to pet this cat. Maybe it'd be polite to offer his name or something. Maybe directions on how to find Puffdragon again if he ever decided that he wanted to visit again.

He crouched down next to the taller male and held his hand out, mostly hidden by his over-sized jacket sleeves. Puff, having finished his meal, went to his adopted boy and purred, rubbing against his hand affectionately. Kiev was in a pretty good mood.

A moment was taken, as Puff went on to mark his territory (also known as: Kiev), to allow himself to write another note:

He likes sausages and only comes out in the evening. If you wanna be his friend you have to feed him every day for 2 weeks. No turkey sausage. That makes him really sick.

A pause, and an addendum:

do you like cats? (:

He was feeling slightly more sociable than usual, but that could have been on the account of Puff being there. After all, any friend of Puff was a friend of his too. Or maybe that method of thinking was too simple minded?

Regardless, he held out the bag for the other male to take. It had a few pieces of food left in there. He figured he'd let him feed Puff.

Yeah, that'd be OK, right?

He was thoroughly engrossed with his current activity, he only became aware of the boy again when he moved, calling the cat back to his side with an outstretched hand (or better description, sleeve). Trevor laid his hand across his knees for lack of a better place of where to put it now that there was no fluffy cat to pet.

A moment of silence between the two once again while he scribbled yet another note for him. He blinked once while scanning the directions. As much as he would like to have the furry companion, he barely had the means of keep himself fed much less anything extra for the animal. Well it was nice while it lasted even if it was only one time…

The kid added another note, the little probably harmless little smiley face tagged at the end suddenly made Trevor feel extremely self-conscious. Oh god, how stupid must he have looked letting his guard down like that for an animal?

“N-not really…” averting his eyes and one had to question if he was the worst liar in the world. He hoped his skin was too pale for the pinpricks he could feel heating up his cheeks to be visible. Unusual he was showing so much emotion today, actually lately he had been conversing with people more often. He must be getting sentimental or something.

Yeaaaah right. Kiev gave a silent chuckle as he eyed the other male curiously. He could tell when someone was lying; he seemed to have a special knack or something for it-- actually. No. That wasn't true in the least. He was exceptionally gullible-- almost to a fault, but somehow every so often his little lie-o-metres would raise a red flag and sound an alarm-- he was pretty damn thankful for these times, because hell if he was gonna believe everything anyone says.

It didn't take too much skill or effort to read this kid though. The way he carried himself and reacted towards Puffdragon seemed to scream of an inner cat lover just waiting to emerge from his cocoon. Hahahaha. The mental image made Kiev giggle in the slightest way. Somehow this kid was just a riot, and he'd hardly have to say anything.

Time to be friendly, wup.

More scribblings:

you're totally lying. you wouldn't have braved puff if you didn't like cats. he's really mean sometimes. he almost clawed out my left eye once, but i'm more stubborn than he is so fuck that. you should visit him more. he'll like you then.

After the note was delivered, Kiev handed the boy the bag, which contained a few sausages meant for his own consumption, but... Kiev figured it wouldn't hurt to let someone have a little fun. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time he slept on an empty stomach.

you wanna try?

So he wasn’t a good liar, he never had much reason to since he barely talked in the first place. It’s completely understandable his skills are rusty which is why he shouldn’t be making things worse by shifting awkwardly from the knowing stare of someone much younger than him.

He probably looked like a cat himself who had just had its fur rubbed the wrong way when he read the accusatory note. “nngh…” He dealt with violent cats before, the telltale scar on his lip that most assumed he had gotten from some fight was actually just a cat scratch when he had walked into an alley full of the creatures.

A paper bag was handed over, Trevor had noticed earlier that the boy had fed puffdragon with pieces of meat from it.

“You wanna try?”

He almost didn’t. it would only fuel his already completely unconvincing denial earlier. He shifted his stubborn stare at anything but the cat or boy onto said fluffy creature. That’s really all it took for him to cave. He reached into the bag and took one sausage , and held out the morsel to the cat in the palm of his hand.
