It wasn't the safest time of day to be out, long after the last rays of the sun had died out beneath the arcing edge of the horizon, but that never really bothered Eleazer. He could take care of himself pretty damn well in the scheme of things, if anybody had ever even noticed him long enough to take stock of him. Which they didn't. And even if they did, they wouldn't remember him by the time he was gone.

The streets were as near-empty as they always were at the night as Eleazer moved, shadow-on-the-wall, down the alleyways that made up the West District. He was looking for something. He knew what, and who, but he had not found it or them yet. Not like he was in any particular hurry, since time tended to move slowly for people like him.

A gust of wind blew down one of the nearby sidestreets, throwing up a small cloud of debris—trash and leaves from the day, dirt, that blew around Eleazer's ankles. He stepped over it, hands in his pockets twisting the single wire between the fingers of his gloves, just to reassure himself that its weight was still there. A streetlight flickered about two blocks ahead, the lightbulb either loose in its socket or running out of juice, but there were a few other house-lamps up and down the path that made it just as easy to see without his eyes straining. Every one of his footsteps rang quietly from the pavement up and off of the walls of the houses.

Eleazer stopped, just under the street-lamp, and stayed perfectly still, not rocking on the balls of his toes, eyes closed as he listened to the wind. The creaking of the building, the rustle of the trash in the alleyway. And then, just like he had thought there probably were going to be soon—footsteps.

Eleazer opened his eyes, pulled his hands from his pockets, and started walking again, this time with his shoulder to the left-side wall of the alley.

Andrew grumbled under his breath, wrapping his sweat jacket more tightly around his body. He had been perfectly fine trying to sleep up on that ledge, but no, some drunk morons had to spot him and decide that it would be a great idea to throw bottles and rocks and other crap up at him. His head still hurt from one of the bottles that had caught him just over the ear. He didn't think he had a concussion, but sleeping was a bit out of the question at the moment, just to be safe.

Covering a yawn, swirled green eyes blinked in surprise as he spotted the older man up ahead standing under a streetlight. Flickering his eyes over the other's form, he figured that he could outrun the other man, so long as he wasn't grabbed. Admittedly, that coat made it difficult for him to judge properly. And that coat looked a lot warmer than his own jacket was, especially since the thing was thinning out and the weather was just sliding into fall.

Andrew debated with himself as he drew nearer to the man. As much as he didn't like picking pockets, or stealing in general, he hadn't eaten in almost three days and was starting to get desperate. Not so desperate as to do that, but enough to put aside his morals a bit. Surviving was more important than being 'good'.

Steeling himself, he changed his angle slightly so that he'd be able to brush against the bulkier man and hopefully slip something from his pocket. A wallet would be great, but he'd be happy with something he could pawn later.

It wasn't hard to pick the man out, even as Eleazer stopped again, nearer to the streetlamp—it wouldn't be any real deterrent toward anything, but he liked the light anyway. It made him feel warm inside, it made his skin feel faintly burnished, and he liked it. It was the closest thing he ever got to sunlight, after all, and he watched from the side of his eye while the young man approached him.

He looked pretty badly off. Hungry, by his first glance. And with eyes that were an odd twist of colour.

Eleazer might have smiled, but he saw no point to it. A Harbinger. Not that it was all that unusual—you saw them out at night, sometimes, associated with the darker side of town as they so-often were, but there was something about seeing people of his kind that made him feel for almost a moment like he had someone to whom he could relate.

It would be gone, the moment the man looked away. Just like Eleazer always was. The boy would step past him, out of the sphere of light, and then he would be gone.

How humbling it was, to see your own death over and over and over again, in the eyes of others.

Reaching into the front pocket of his coat to ostensibly pull something out—maybe a pack of cigarettes, maybe a map, who knew—Eleazer held still and distracted as the young man moved past him and near, and then close, close enough to slide one hand into his pocket. Eleazer let him. Let the boy curl his fingers around the first thing inside (lucky for him he had picked the side pocket that didn't have knives and garotte wire in it), a pair of gloves. Bloodstained, of course, as many of his things (white as they were) often became, and knotted up in them, several credit bills.

Eleazer just smiled to himself, jagged and almost carved into his face, and waited. Almost counted down the steps until the confusion and the memory loss slammed into effect.

Andrew ducked his head a little, feeling his skin crawl. Something about this guy just seemed off. Maybe he shouldn't... No, he needed the money and if the man could afford to dress in so much white and keep it clean, then he could afford a little... misplacement of funds.

And that had been entirely too easy. Why had the man just let him do that? Most people would move aside when someone approached them, especially with it being at night. And the teen just knew that the other had been watching him, so why...?

Andrew twisted slightly to watch the man from the corner of his own eye even as he glanced down to see what he had lifted. A pair of gloves with some credits wrapped in them. Why would you put credits inside gloves? And the gloves, once white, now looked stained but by what...

When he realized the odd dark substance on the fabric was dried blood, Andrew couldn't help his yelp of surprise or how he let go of the gloves as if burned. Jerking around, he focused wide eyes on the man. Just what had he stumbled into?

He'd done a job, earlier this night. Just after dusk, in fact. It had been easy—commissioned a few days before by someone who had paid up-front, just like Eleazer always asked, and then he had found the landed, wealthy man, visiting his pretty, voluptuous whore. He had waited out of sight, waited for the man to leave.

Part of the job description had to make sure the death seemed like it was an attack, a mugging. So he had stolen all the money in the man's wallet, left his things strewed across the ground, and stabbed him instead of his own usual preferred method of death. Thus the blood that had gotten all over his gloves, all over the soles of his shoes, long since walked off against the streets and washed off by puddles in the gutters.

Death was a lucrative business, but never a clean one.

It didn't take long, only a few steps—not nearly long enough to forget the man under the street lamp, too clear in the mind—for the boy to realise what he had just stolen. A pair of gloves, drenched in blood, now more dried than wet, with a wad of credits knotted up inside. Enough to keep him comfortable for several weeks, with how plainly he lived. And as the young man looked at him, eyes huge and wide, terror almost etched there, green and unearthly, just like his own—

Eleazer held out one hand, raised one eyebrow, and waited.

Andrew flinched when the man lifted a hand. He had caught a glimpse of the other's eyes and he had no idea what to expect. Lifting his hands to show they were empty save the dull smudged blood on one palm, he laughed nervously.

"H-hey man, no need to get hasty or anything. I'm not anybody important. I didn't see anything," he stammered. Glancing down at the smally, bloody bundle, he moved a foot forward and nudged it in just the right way to roll it on top of his sneaker. Twitching his foot just so, the gloves were airborne and heading toward the man.

Andrew glanced behind him and forward again, debating on if he should try running or not. But then, he had no idea what this guy could do. For all he knew, the other could throw fireballs or something. Or he might have some sort of ranged weapon like a gun or throwing knives. No, best thing to do was slowly back away instead and keep an eye on him - he'd be more likely to be able to dodge this way.

The young man flinched and didn't bother to hide it—Eleazer did not twitch or waver, just kept his hand outstretched, and clenched his fist in a gesture that pretty much universally translated to give that here. He already had to wash his gloves, so them being on the ground didn't really make them any dirtier in the grand scheme of things.

"H-hey man, no need to get hasty or anything. I'm not anybody important. I didn't see anything,"

The young man reached forward as he was stammering with one foot, hooking up the bundle of gloves that was Eleazer's, caught it on the top of his foot, and sent it flying. He plucked it from mid-air without blinking or moving more than one arm, and separated the gloves from the credits, replaced the bundle of white leather and thick cotton in his pocket and took the money, watching the young man out the top of his eyes while he counted apart the bills into two stacks—one with about three quarters of how much had been there originally, one with a quarter.

He put the larger stack back in his pocket.

Folding up the bills, Eleazer gestured to the young man to come forward, staring him dead in the eye, and slid one hand into his pocket, held out the other with the credits into the empty space between them, and waited.

Andrew stared at the guy, wondering if he was for real. No one just gave away money. No one was that nice. It was probably some sort of ruse just to get him to come closer so he could be grabbed and murdered in some sort of messy, bloody way. After all, the gloves were already bloody, what as a little more. Which made him wonder just how the guy would kill him... And wow, he must be more tired and hungry than he thought if his imagination was getting away from him like that.

And then it clicked. He really wasn't at the top of his game if it took him this long to realize what the man wanted. Andrew sighed and he slumped, his hands falling limply.

Cautiously moving closer, he just looked at the man. "What do you want done?" he asked, his tone as resigned as his expression. He was really hoping the guy would just want a hand or would settle for oral, since it was a little chilly to be removing any clothes.

Green eyes stared back at him, distrustful and scared. Eleazer didn't move, just held perfectly still. Movement could often indicate aggression, and since he had no words to say at the moment, he would keep to silent coaxing instead. However, when the young man finally moved (not as Eleazer had been expecting, to step forward and take the money, now offered to him instead of stolen) the boy slumped in resignation.

Eleazer arched one black eyebrow as the young man moved carefully closer he seemed to have a very clear idea of what Eleazer wanted.

"What do you want done?"

It clicked for him a moment later, and then without meaning to, Eleazer smiled—not a jagged, cocky smile, but one that spread all across his face, shook his head, and laughed a few times under his breath. He moved closer, grabbed the young man's nearer hand, and pressed in the money. "I remember doing anything for money." He ruffled the young man's hair. Eleazer wasn't into that. He didn't have the time, or the energy, and what was the point when whatever happened would only be gone for the other person, like water out a sieve, when the morning dawned. "Get a new coat." The one he had was too thin now.

Eleazer let go of the boy's hand, returned his own to his pockets, glanced up at the street light and the sky—he had other things to do tonight, while the dark still covered the sun—and started walking.

Oh great, the guy's smiling. It rarely boded well for Andrew when someone smiled in this sort of situation. Yeah, the expression itself was nice enough, but Andrew had seen plenty of people, men and women, hide evil and violence under a pleasant smile or some kind gestures. He had been fooled by it before and wasn't going to believe it again...

His hand twitched when it was grabbed and he reflexively closed his fingers over the credits pressed into his palm, frowning up at the man. No one ever paid him first. And he held very still when Eleazer's own hand lifted toward his head. Why the hell couldn't he just say what he wanted instead of leaving Andrew wondering. He really hoped this wasn't some sort of ruse either. If those gloves were any indication, the white clad man was more than capable of killing him if the whim arose.

"Get a new coat."

A new coat? What? Where the hell did that come from? And he liked his jacket, dammit. It was perfect for when he was running in cooler weather. Though, a second one wouldn't hurt for when he was trying to sleep.

"Hey, what the fuck man?" he snapped, striding after the older man, fear and unease completely forgotten in the face of his wounded pride and confusion. "I don't want any charity! If I did, I'd be at a shelter!" And what the hell was he thinking, following someone who could probably kill him like it was nothing.

Spoiler:

Eleazer got about ten steps away before there were once again footsteps after him and for the first time in quite a while he almost wished he had gotten out of a place faster—the one pro that he could think of for his totally useless power was that it was a perfect way to end conversations before they started, but he turned around anyway, frozen in the middle of the streets, dark hair sliding into his face and hands still in his pockets. He arched both his eyebrows and stared right back at the young man as he approached, moving much faster.

Apparently he had lost any fear of Eleazer, and replaced it all with extreme annoyance. But he smiled, shook his head.

"Not charity. I was there once." There and worse, in some ways, because he had had nobody that even remembered him. Better in some ways too—his stealing was never punished. He was never caught. "Too young. You will learn." Eleazer smiled. He might not be the most generous man, or the one with the best heart, but he tried his damn best. He was kind to those who were badly off. Someone had to be. "Do not turn down a gift."

Andrew paused, momentarily surprised over the man's looks, before continuing on his way. He remembered the man being a harbinger, but for some reason, he had thought his face was different. What the hell?

"Gift? Why? For what?" Andrew took a step closer, glaring into pale blue eyes as he stopped just in front of Eleazer. "No one does anything just to be nice. What the hell are you playing at? And what is there to learn?"

He reached forward to shove the money into the man's hand, not caring about his proximity or that he was easily in reach to be grabbed or struck. He also pushed lightly at the other's chest. "Who the hell do you think you are? Did you hear me asking for help?"

Andrew conveniently ignored the fact that trying to steal from anyone could be seen as a plea for help. And never mind that he currently looked like he needed it, a small bit of dried blood flaking from the skin over his ear where one of those rocks had struck him earlier.

Eleazer watched the young man as he spoke. His eyes, as unnatural as the day was long, made him stick out right away. He was a Harbinger, of what Eleazer neither knew nor cared. It wasn't his point to pry. Nobody ever pried on him. But the boy was young—he couldn't have been over twenty. A teenager, most likely. His voice was deep enough that he had to be at the tail end of puberty, so probably somewhere on the upper end of seventeen. Stupid, then. In the way that all teenagers were stupid. That was a prerequisite for being one, after all.

Staying silent because there was nothing to say, nor would any words he spoke have made a difference, Eleazer waited as the boy grabbed his hand and shoved the credits back into it, turning over his hand to grab the boy's wrist as he did so, and keeping his ground as his chest got shoved on.

This boy was alone. And he had no idea how not to be. At least, that was what it seemed.

"Have a job," Eleazer said, closing the young man's fist around the money—he could think of some other people he knew like this boy was. Stubborn, refusing to take a hint, never letting anything go. People who would rather drown than call for help. This was something Eleazer was used to. "Tea stand. Two streets back. Green lantern. Chamomile with honey. Bring it." And thus, a compromise.

Andrew's hand twitched when his wrist was grabbed and, boy, did he hope that he wasn't completely misjudging that this guy didn't seem to want to hurt him. He stared in surprise as the man spoke.

"Wait a minute. You're going to pay me this much money," and here he waved the hand holding the credits, "To go get you a cup of fucking tea? Do I have that right?"

And that was... That seemed stupidly optimistic. What was to stop him from taking off with all of it (never you mind that he had just tried to do similar)? Most people would.

Taking a step back, Andrew thought about it. If he looked at it like he was being hired for a delivery, he could accept that, barely. "Tch, whatever. Chamomile with honey? Got it." He grumbled as he turned, shoving the credits into his pocket as he did, and broke into a light jog. Just because he thought this was a bit ridiculous, didn't mean that he wouldn't do the damn job right. And at least he could enjoy the run and use some of the extra to get himself something to eat. The guy could live with that much if he decided he wanted the rest back.

Eleazer just nodded, a half-smile tucked into the side of his mouth. Yes. All that money, just to go get a cup of tea for someone that this boy wouldn't even remember the moment that he turned away, the moment he truly left his sight. Which of course meant that, in the actual scheme of things, it was still a gift. Slipping his hands back into his pockets, running his thumb over the handle of one of the butterfly knives in there, Eleazer idly turned it between his fingers as he watched the young man shove the money into his pockets and jog away.

He moved cleanly, lithely. He was talented, if he had given himself some time. Some training. He wasn't stupid, just stubborn, and not entirely all that bad. Eleazer could think of a few people the young man reminded him of.

Watching as he jogged away, Eleazer turned, moving silently and swiftly, adjusting his weight to not tap against the cobblestones as he walked toward a nearby alleyway, vanishing into the shadows, the light from the lamps sliding away from his white coat as the shadows swallowed him up, and he moved on into the city, once more a shade.

It was nice, sometimes, even to just see eyes lock with his own—even to know they never would again.

Andrew was so focused on the 'job' that he didn't even realize that the details he was always so careful to take note of were trickling away from him or that his thoughts turned from the curiosity he couldn't help but feel over the man toward where he could find to sleep once he had something in his stomach. And maybe he'd get his own drink.

Nudging the door open, he edged into the small shop, enjoying the scents of the various warm drinks and different foods the small cafe offered. The products they had on offer were all great tasting. And the best thing was that they were open 24 hours and reasonably priced.

"Chamomile tea with honey, a cinnamon raisin muffin, a blueberry muffin, and a hot chocolate please." He may as well get himself something to drink as well. While he was waiting, he decided to head to South District. Yeah, it was a bit more dangerous (alright, a lot more), but he was also less likely to have crap thrown at him by a bunch of drunks who had deluded themselves into thinking they could handle any gang members they came across. And it was in the same direction he was heading anyway.

Exchanging some credits for his order, he flashed a smile and pushed out the door again. It wasn't until he reached the site of his encounter that he realized he couldn't remember the encounter in the first place or why he was here now. And why the hell did he have tea? He never drank tea. And there was something in his pocket.

Juggling the drinks, he balanced one on the other and freed a hand to reach into the pocket. Credits? How the hell...? And when for that matter? He would remember picking someone's pocket and he didn't feel like he had done that so... He glanced at the drinks again. That would explain the tea - he was trying to get rid of the taste.

Grimacing, he started walking again. The guy must have been pretty grateful that Andrew had been willing to go down on him considering the amount of credits he had. And he must have been pretty rank in appearance if he had already been forgotten.

"Fuck, I hate some of the shit I do sometimes."
