More Alike Than We Thought (Ceara, Andrew) [complete]

Post by Ceara on Sun Sep 16, 2012 5:28 pm

Well this is just so many kinds of shittiness, Ceara thought as her boots pounded against the pavement.

The man had been the perfect mark, too. He had been decently dressed, compared to a lot of people on the streets, and was stupid enough to keep his wallet in the back pocket of his jeans, where the outline of it could be clearly seen through the denim. It was only a matter of time before he was pick pocketed, and Ceara just happened to be the one who got there first. Well at least that was the plan. Bumping into him was supposed to distract him from noticing her slip his wallet out of his pocket and into hers. She didn’t count on some asshole to shove into her, the jarring motion forcing her hand to knock against him when she was pulling out. By that time, he noticed that her hand wasn’t on his ass in a good way.

And that was how she ended up like this. His wallet in her pocket, she turned and twisted through the network of buildings, trying to lose the man and his two other friends that joined him in the chase. And they were persistent. Growling in frustration, Ceara looked up, noticing a fire escape. She was growing tired, and, deciding that the closest place to hide was up on the roof, grasped the end of the ladder and clambered up the rungs.

It was a fairly tall building, and Ceara had scaled six stories before she heard the voices from below, their owners noticing her. …Shit! She quickly ran up the last two stories before hoisting herself up to the roof. Taking deep breaths to calm down her racing heart, she took out her knife, knowing that at least one of them would follow her. There was a loud crash and, after taking a peek over the edge of the roof, Ceara cursed. She had noticed the ladder, and well, the entire fire escape was covered in rust, but she didn’t expect the ladder to break off. The man whose wallet she had stolen was coming up the stairs, and his much heavier footfalls must have rattled the ladder enough to make it come off its hinges. So now she was stuck on a roof with a very angry man and nowhere to go.

“…Fuck.”

Re: More Alike Than We Thought (Ceara, Andrew) [complete]

Post by Andrew on Sun Sep 16, 2012 5:48 pm

It had been over a week since he had received his injuries and Andrew still wasn't sure what the hell had happened or how he had survived what was clearly an attempt to kill him. He just knew he had finally recovered enough to be able to move around like he was used to. He had run through the credits he had managed to save up and was almost out of the protein bars he had bought as a precaution.

Right now though, he was more weary than anything else and sleeping a bit more out of the way than he normally did. So, here he was, stretched out on top of a roof access door and enjoying the sun as he dozed lightly. He still wasn't comfortable enough to relax completely and get in an actual, restful sleep, and it was starting to show. That, or he had some sort of internal bleeding he had missed and it was finally getting to him after a week and a half of slowly bleeding out. He was just happy he had finally quit coughing up and passing blood. His shoulder still hurt though, but hairline fractures usually did for a while.

Andrew heard an odd clanging followed by a metallic groan and crash, jerking upright to look toward the fire escape he had used to get up here in the first place. Had someone seen him climb up here and decide to follow him three hours after the fact?

Looking around, he couldn't help that he blinked, recognizing that silver hair. "Haze?" And that was certainly a surprise. He really hadn't expected to ever see her again so for her to be on the same roof as him, was certainly odd. He carefully dropped to the roof proper and leaned back against the wall behind him, not sure if the short surge of dizziness was his restitution kicking in after such a small height or if he had just moved too quickly.

Green eyes flickered between the knife in her hand and the man stalking toward the girl. Just what the hell was going on?

From the corner of her eye, she saw a figure drop off the roof access door. He might have called out something, but she couldn’t be sure, her attention focused on the man advancing slowly toward her. “Miss, if you would just give it back, you won’t get hurt.”

She scoffed. His aura was flickering a dangerous shade of red. Even if she gave it back (which she wasn’t going to do, anyway), he wasn’t going to leave her alone without making some sort of statement on her body. “I think there’s been a slight misunderstanding…” Ceara smirked when the red flashed outwards.

“Like hell there’s been a misunderstanding! I fucking saw you take it!”

Smiling, she flipped her blade closed and raised her hands above her head, shifting her weight slightly to get ready. “There’s no need for such language, sir. I don’t know what you’re talking about.” A lie, she could still feel the wallet in her right pocket. But she wanted to piss him off even more, and it worked. There was another flare, and then he was charging toward her, fist raised.

A grin split her face, and she quickly ducked out of the way, kicking the back of his knee to send him sprawling across the rock layer. He stood up, snarling, and pulled out a knife much larger than her own. Frowning, she took a step back, her vision swimming, and her stomach rolled when a wave of nausea suddenly hit her. The man slashed out, and Ceara, distracted, couldn’t completely get out of the way, the knife opening a small gash on her left arm. Letting out a soft hiss at the sharp pain, she backpedaled, wanting to get out of his range.

Andrew watched, adjusting his bag and confused as Haze provoked the man. Why didn't she just run instead? There was a building just across the alley that the roof was only two stories down. She should be able to make that. A frown tugged at his mouth when he saw her stagger. Was she ill? That would explain why she wasn't trying it with the roof (never mind that most people were sane enough not to). And then the man caught her arm with his blade.

"Hey!" That fucking son of a bitch. He didn't give a damn what the hell she might have done to him, or what she had done to Andrew himself, but that was no reason to take a knife to her, especially since she didn't have hers out anymore.

Making a quick decision, Andrew charged forward and rammed into the man, shoulder first. He might have said screw it and fought, but he was in no condition to do that, and he didn't have a knife anyway. Which, speaking of...

Andrew lashed out with a foot, catching the guy's hand and sending the knife flying, before he turned toward Haze. "Hi again. Just need you to trust me for a minute." Having said that, he swept her into his arms and sprinted for the edge of the roof, hiding a wince with each step as her weight pressed against his ribs.

If you asked Andrew, he'd tell you that the best thing about flying through the air is the way it sometimes feels like your stomach has been left behind even after your feet are solid on the ground again. It was a bit hard to enjoy when you had a squirming girl in your arms and you had to worry about dropping her. He might have said the weightless feeling you get, but since he wasn't sure if that was his power half the time or not...

Landing on the next roof, he bent his knees and went into a roll, tucking Haze's head against his neck with his chin. He grunted as her weight threw off his momentum and he landed on his back with her sprawled over him. Blinking a couple times, he let his head fall back as his vision swam from the short application of his power.

At least he now knew his power would extend to others if he was touching them and landed first.

“Hey!” Through the blobs and streaks of color, she could make out a flash of red hair and then there was a flicker of light as the knife was knocked to the ground. "Hi again. Just need you to trust me for a minute." Still disoriented, she couldn’t fight against the arms picking her up, and suddenly she was moving very fast, the edge of the roof coming closer. What the fuh-

And then she was flying.

It was only for a few seconds, but in those short moments her vision cleared, and she caught a glimpse of a familiar face before they landed, Andrew tucking her head under his chin to make it easier for him to drop into a roll. They stopped with him on his back and her on top of him, head resting on his chest. The sudden movements in the last few moments had agitated her migraine again, and Ceara pushed off him with a groan, flopping on her back beside him. Squeezing her eyes shut, she took a few deep breaths before standing up, dusting off her clothes.

She looked back at the building whose roof they - well, he - jumped off of. The jump must’ve been at least fifteen feet across and two stories down. “Andrew, what the hell were you thinking?”

Turning around, she realized that he was still laying down, brows furrowed. “Hey. Hey! Are you alright?” Ignoring her own injury, she squatted down beside him, taking in his busted lip and black eye. “Jeez, you look like crap.” She reached out and poked him on his cheek. “Dude, Andrew, look at me.” As terribly as their last encounter ended, she didn’t want to see him hurt because of her.

Green eyes cracked open. Oh good, the world had stopped spinning. He carefully sat up, brushing her hand away with a grumble. He had a black eye. What made her think that the rest of his face wouldn't hurt as well?

"I'm fine. I'm healing. And I was thinking that I'd rather not fight, especially not so soon after nearly getting beaten to death and you didn't look like you could fight again." He pushed to his feet and turned toward the other building to glare at the man yelling after them. "Oh, go jump off a roof!" he yelled back.

Andrew paused as he thought over what he just said and his lips twisted oddly in amusement. "Oh, wait..." He laughed and flipped off the man before turning to the other teen again. "See, you should have let me teach you. You could have done that on your own... What'd you do to piss him off anyhow? More flip-flopping? Or was I just special?" And he hadn't realized that he was still bitter over that. He really must have gotten his hopes up without realizing it.

"Oh, go jump off a roof!"

Ceara couldn’t help but snort a little at the irony, and she gave the man a teasing smile and wave. "See, you should have let me teach you. You could have done that on your own... What'd you do to piss him off? More flip flopping? Or was I just special?"

Her good mood was bound to be temporary in this guy’s presence, and he didn’t fail her, quickly crushing the humor. She knew that the topic of their last meeting was going to come up, but it didn’t stop her from hoping it wouldn’t. Biting the inside of her cheek, she sighed before muttering to herself. “God, he’s acting like he’s the only damn person I can’t trust.”

The girl crossed her arms over her chest and turned to him. “I was doing just fine up there, just so you know. You really didn’t need to do that…” Her breath left her mouth in a huff. “…But thanks. And if you really must know, he was looking for-“ She paused, pulling out the man’s wallet and waving it. Andrew just jumped off a fucking building carrying an extra hundred something pounds while he was injured; the least she could do was tell him why. “-this. I honestly don’t see why he got so damn pissy, though. If he’s walking around in the South he wouldn’t have that much…” She opened the wallet and took out its contents, eyes widening as she took a quick tally of the bills. “Oh, damn.”

Grinning, she reached down and put her hand in one of the lower pockets… where her own wallet was supposed to be. Grin slipping off her face, she looked around. “The hell…”

"Doing just fine? Funny, from what I saw it looked like you were about to puke all over his stupidly expensive shoes. And if you had it handled, you'd have avoided that slash. He was wide, even I could see that. And I don't know shit about knife fighting." He huffed and turned away, taking a couple of steps before turning back. "I might do a lot of running, but it keeps me alive. What the hell would you have done if I wasn't up there with the you two?"

Andrew couldn't help how his own eyes widened. That... was a lot of money. He didn't think he had ever had that much money at one point in his life. Hell, he wasn't sure he had had that much in the past year entirely. "Pickpocket, huh?" Well, he wasn't going to throw stones, all things considered.

Looking down when she started to look around, he scooped up the wallet next to his foot. "Here," he said, voice going absent as he glanced at the now open wallet and the picture inside. That... He had seen that man before in some of his father's old family photos. It was someone who was supposed to be dead.

He took a couple of quick steps toward her and grabbed her arm. "Where did you get this? Who is he to you?"

She frowned. Her wallet must have fallen out when they were rolling, so it should be on this roof… Maybe it dropped out when they jumped. Ceara leaned over the edge of the roof, looking at the ground below.

“Here,” she heard Andrew call out from behind her. Twisting around, her eyes immediately landed on the open wallet in his hands and Andrew was looking at it, a strange look in his eyes. Why was he…? Suddenly he shot out a hand, grasping her sharply on her injured arm. "Where did you get this? Who is he to you?"

Hissing in pain, she recoiled and twisted out of his grip. “What the hell, Andrew?” Reaching out a hand, she snatched her wallet out of his hold, before giving him a rough shove to the side. “It’s none of your fucking business.” Opening the wallet, she looked at the same photograph Andrew had been looking at only moments before. It was very old, and very worn, but it never failed to make her smile. She had taken the picture when she was seven. Her father was simply smiling at the camera, and a small pudgy finger was covering the bottom left quarter. She wasn’t a very good photographer at that age.

Remembering that she was on the roof with another person, Ceara looked up. “Andrew?” He wasn’t standing next to her, like she thought he was. Vaguely remembering that she had pushed him while grabbing for the wallet, she paled, running over to the side of the roof. The girl saw his shock of red hair, and, heart jumping, quickly made her way down the fire escape.

Sure, he wasn’t her most favorite person right now, but she didn’t mean to kill him.

Andrew staggered from the force of her shove, face twisting in pain as she hit his cracked ribs. And then he was against the half wall that ran along the edge of the roof. He might have been fine if not for the rocks underfoot, ruining his traction. Surprise filled his eyes as he over balanced and went over the wall.

A normal person would have screamed in fear, but all Andrew could think as he fell was Six stories, at least sixty feet, at least a minute... This is going to suck. Twisting in mid-air, he shifted so that he would land feet first. As he landed, he let his legs fold under him, going to his knees.

Falling forward, he twisted again so that he would be laying on his back. Or, mostly on his back considering his bag was in the way. It really was best that he just lay here for a while. No one was chasing him and the world felt like it was trying to throw him from its surface so he really didn't have any pressing need to move for the next few minutes.

It didn't even occur to him how things would look to anyone else considering the fall and how he was just laying there now, eyes closed so he didn't have to see the swaying and heaving of the buildings.

Re: More Alike Than We Thought (Ceara, Andrew) [complete]

Post by Ceara on Mon Sep 17, 2012 1:22 pm

A strange feeling was spreading through her limbs as she descended the stairs, a cold, numbing feeling. She didn’t think, she just ran down the six stories, brain only working enough to make her legs move. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t killed before, though that was only a few times when she had absolutely no choice. But then this was an accident (oh god she didn't mean to what if he's actually dead). Finally jumping off the ladder, she looked at his still body(he should be moving why wasn’t he moving oh god). A hollow pit of dread forming in her stomach, Ceara walked over to him. “Andrew…?”

Finally regaining the ability to think, she squatted down next to him, reaching out a hand. A pause, and then two fingers were pressed against his neck. His pulse beat a steady rhythm against her fingers. A shaky breath left her mouth, sounding more like a sob than anything else. How the hell he was uninjured, or even alive, after falling six stories, she didn’t know. Maybe that was his power? It would explain how they made the jump before.

Sighing, she took a deep breath to calm her nerves before slapping her hand across his face. He was fine, he was –for the most part- unharmed, and she was angry now for feeling so damn worried, but she couldn’t stop the relief from seeping into her voice when he grunted in response. “Andrew. Don’t fucking do that to me, god…” Nevermind that she was the one who pushed him off, but Ceara wasn’t thinking reasonably at the moment.

Oh, he so hated his restitution. Normally he could deal with it, but stacking it on top of the rest of his aching body just seemed to make the dizziness worse. Hell, he was actually feeling nauseous and that rarely happened.

Hearing quick footfalls on the fire escape this side of the shorter building, Andrew couldn't help the idle thought of if Haze was coming down to check on him or if she was going to flee the scene of an apparent murder. At least he had landed in an alley and not in the street itself. He had done that before and trying to get away afterward had been ridiculous.

He twitched lightly when she touched his neck and started to open his eyes, now that his head wasn't swimming quite so much, only to squeeze them shut again as he caught sight of her hand swinging toward his face. He grunted, more in surprise than anything else, when she lightly slapped him.

“Andrew. Don’t fucking do that to me, god…”

Opening his eyes fully after she said that, he took a moment to study her. Things were too serious after recent happenings. He should do something about it.

"Aw, I knew you cared," he murmured, a teasing smile spreading over his lips.

"Aw, I knew you cared."

She laughed a little at that. It was obvious what he was doing, and she appreciated the effort. She lifted a hand again to punch him lightly on the shoulder, but hesitated, dropping it back down. He wasn’t hurt from the actual fall, that much was clear. But, thinking back on what she said before, he really did look like he had been chewed up.

She stopped that train of thought. He was trying to lighten the mood, no need to ask why he looked the way he did, or even why he was looking at the picture of her dad like he had seen a ghost. That would come up later, but now she asked the question that popped into her head earlier. “Is that your power? To jump off shit without getting hurt?”

Suddenly remembering that some harbingers did not like people asking about their abilities, she backtracked. “I mean, you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. But if it is, that’s pretty cool…” And she wasn’t lying. Her ability wasn’t very exciting, though it was useful sometimes. But if she could dive off buildings without fear of, well, dying, Ceara would never stop doing it.

Andrew couldn't help the light flinch when she moved to punch him. It wasn't that he was afraid of her or anything, but she would have hit the same shoulder that took a steel pipe and it seemed that she didn't always know her own strength. He covered the flinch by turning the motion into pushing himself up into a sit.

"Yeah, jumps and falls. Helpful on the occasions I screw up a jump or landing. And that one time I got hit by a car. I mean, the car hurt like a bitch, but I didn't get hurt beyond that since it knocked me off my feet. It's always nice to avoid messing up this gorgeous face," he teased, smile widening into a grin. Yeah, he was laying it on a little thick, but she really looked like she could use the laugh. He could ask about the picture later.

Eyes flickering over her face, his expression softened. She needed reassurance too, if he was any judge, so he reached forward and tugged her into a hug. "I'm okay. You didn't hurt me. It was an accident," he said softly, giving her permission to break down if she needed to.

Ceara couldn’t help the small ‘eep’ of surprise when he pulled her into a hug, and her body instinctively stiffened in response to the unexpected contact. "I'm okay. You didn't hurt me. It was an accident.” Realizing he wasn’t about to hurt her and he wasn’t mad, the girl let herself relax, returning the hug and sagging a little into his arms.

The girl couldn’t remember the last time she had let anyone hold her like this, her mind flashing back to her father. In her only real friendship right now, Ceara was the steady anchor to Talia’s occasional mood swings. She was always the comforter, never the one who needed to be comforted. The teen let her head drop onto his shoulder, reveling in the feeling of not needing to be strong for a minute.

The adrenaline from the last ten minutes slowly drained out of her system as she stayed there, arms around Andrew's neck. Ceara, finally able to think about something other than panic, grinned, realizing how fucking ridiculous the whole situation was. It seemed kind of absurd, how she ran into a guy she never thought she would see again, have him save her from being god-knows-what, pushed him off a building, thought she killed him, and now they were just hugging. Her shoulders shook in silent mirth before she pulled away, a large smile still on her face. In retrospect it probably wasn’t that hilarious, but the girl wasn’t thinking clearly. She tried to school her expression, but failed miserably, face still fixed in a small smile.

“It’s kind of stupid, isn’t it.” She gestured to nothing in particular. “This whole situation, I mean.”

Andrew blinked as he felt her shake against him. He didn't think she would actually cry. But then, he had expected her to pull away instead of returning the hug. His eyes went soft and closed as he remembered his sisters. This felt almost like he was hugging one of them again.

When she did pull away, that little smile over her lips, he cocked his head, about to ask her if she was okay but she spoke first. “It’s kind of stupid, isn’t it. This whole situation, I mean.”

Thinking on it, he had to agree. He laughed himself, a wide grin crossing his face. It was easy to ignore the pain when he had something else to focus on. "I think though, that we should move somewhere else before we laugh ourselves silly - sillier in my case. Stupid and his buddies might be coming soon. To be honest, I'm surprised they haven't yet." Now that the dizziness was gone, he could get to his feet and start moving again. He offered her a hand. "Come on. You can tell me about your power while we walk." The other questions could wait.

She blinked, having forgotten all about the people looking for her. Taking the offered hand, she allowed him to pull her up. "Come on. You can tell me about your power while we walk."

Ceara nodded before heading further down the alley, not knowing where she was going, but it wouldn’t be a good idea to go back towards the men, for obvious reasons. “My power… It’s kinda hard to describe.” She sighed and put her hands in her pockets, struggling to put her ability in words. “I see how people feel, emotions and stuff like that. Not through body language, though I’m pretty good at reading people like that too. I actually see colors and shit around their head, if I concentrate. I guess it’s kind of an aura or something, I can tell if a person’s happy or pissed, if they’re tense or relaxed, and if they’re lying, just as long as they’re a normal person.”

Frowning, she lifted her left arm, inspecting the wound. It really wasn’t as bad as she thought, it had already stopped bleeding. “I wasn’t lying when I said I could handle that guy, you know. Don’t know what I would’ve done with him, but he didn’t get the upper hand. I pissed him off on purpose; it makes a person clumsy and stupid, and if I’m seeing his aura, then I know when he’s about to attack. That's how I usually fight, or at least how I fight the stupid ones. My restitution just hit me at a bad time, which is how I got this,” she said, motioning towards the injury.

Andrew nodded. "So you're kind of Feng Shui and kind of walking polygraph all rolled into one little, spunky package? That's cool. But what do you mean by 'normal person'? Like, non-harbingers or non-insane people?" Because you didn't need a mutation to be a sociopath or whatever.

Seeing her look at her arm, he swung his bag around to dig in it. "I know I've got something in here..." he muttered, scowling into the depths. "No, that's my spare shirt. And that's... not something you need to know about. And... What the hell is this?" He pulled out a mousetrap, looking at it in bemusement. "How the hell did that get in here?" Glancing at Haze, he shrugged before tossing it over a shoulder and into a dumpster. "Anyway, here we go!" And with that triumphant statement, he pulled out a box of band-aids, somewhat squashed, but functional, and passed it to her.

"And I don't doubt you can handle yourself - hell, you can probably fight better than I do - but everyone has off moments. You're lucky he caught your arm and not your throat." And he couldn't help reaching up to touch his own neck. The cut had healed rather quickly, but the fear was still lingering.

"Your res, huh? Do you get dizzy too?" If so, then that would be a bit creepy. They were already scarily alike and she had a picture of his "father's" brother who had supposedly died years before Andrew was born. If they shared a restitution as well...

“But what do you mean by 'normal person'? Like, non-harbingers or non-insane people?"

She laughed. “Non-insane people. I met this guy on the Metro once…” It wasn’t pretty. She had looked so many times at his aura, trying to understand him, that she had to throw up when she got off the train.

He rummaged through his bag and Ceara watched him, trying to catch a look at the thing she ‘didn’t need to know about’, but that was shoved to the bottom before she could. A mousetrap appeared out of the bag, and she laughed at the sheer randomness of it, before Andrew finally found what he was looking for and passed her the box of band-aids. Nodding in thanks, she pulled out the largest size that was left and gave the rest back to him, quickly unwrapping the bandage and pulling it over the wound.

"Your res, huh? Do you get dizzy too?”

“Hm? Oh, yeah. Well, my vision blurs and I get nauseous along with these terrible fucking headaches.” She reached up and rubbed the back of her head, where most of her migraines originated from. “It’s… disorienting. Once or twice, it gets so bad that I pass out,” she said, frowning.

Re: More Alike Than We Thought (Ceara, Andrew) [complete]

Andrew couldn't help but smile at her laughter. He really had no idea where the thing had come from, but at least it had ended up having a purpose. He shoved the box back into his bag, watching her take care of the cut.

“Well, my vision blurs and I get nauseous along with these terrible fucking headaches.”

Yep. Creepy. At least his was just the dizziness and a loss of coordination. He'd hate to have to deal with nausea on a regular basis, same thing with migraines. And he had only passed out once from it, but then, he had a broken arm and concussion at the time so he wrote it off as it being the injuries rather than his restitution.

"I hope that you have someone with you when you fight then. If you can pass out." And she had already well shown that his concern wasn't needed or necessarily appreciated, but he couldn't help it. And then they were stepping out onto the street. Glancing around, Andrew took note of where they were before speaking again. "We need to talk somewhere we won't be likely to be overheard. Any preferences?" Because he was not going to let her run off without explaining that photo.

"I hope that you have someone with you when you fight then. If you pass out."

She shook her head. “Nah, I know my limits well enough to recognize when I’m pushing it. And I’ve been lucky - I haven’t passed out during a fight.” Yet.

The alley they were walking down opened up onto a familiar street, and Andrew spoke up again, suddenly serious. "We need to talk somewhere we won't be likely to be overheard. Any preferences?"

She blinked at the strange question. Did she say something that annoyed him? “…okay? And uh,” she looked around, recognizing the sign of a diner across the street, and pointed. “It should be pretty empty over there at this time of day. Plus,” she chuckled, “the food isn’t that bad, and I’ll pay. That guy’s wallet was fat enough for the both of us.”

She then sprinted across the street, pausing only slightly to flip off the angry drivers, and entered the diner. It was just after the lunch rush, so the place had only a few people finishing off their plates. They wouldn’t be bothered much here. Ceara seated herself in a booth near the back of the room and smiled at the waitress that stopped by the table.

“Hello, Miss, do you know what you want to order or would you like to take a look at our menu?”

“It’s fine. Uh, two orders of waffles, a ham and cheese omelet, a slice of that chocolate cake,” she pointed to the glass display case near the register, “and a large coffee.” Yes, maybe it was a bit weird that she was eating so much breakfast food at - she stole a glance at the clock mounted over the door - four in the afternoon, but fuck it, that’s what she wanted.

Andrew laughed, following Haze across the street with quite a bit more grace, and enjoyment. He sat across from her glancing around. Cozy little place this was.

He flashed his own smile at the waitress. "I'll take a vegetable omelet, some fruit salad, and orange juice. Thanks." And he couldn't help but smile a little at how she melted. He didn't do it on purpose, but it certainly helped at times. He watched the woman walk away before turning to Haze again. "We'll talk after the food is brought, then we won't need to worry about being disturbed."

Looking over his companion, Andrew smiled. "Listen, I wanted to say sorry about grabbing you like that earlier. I was surprised and I shouldn't have done that. Forgive me?" And his smile turned plaintive, bottom lip sticking out in a teasing pout as he fluttered his eyes at her. He had no doubt that he looked ridiculous, but if it made her laugh, he could deal with it.

He thanked the waitress when their orders were brought out, but rather than dig in, he toyed with the food a little before setting down his fork. "Could I see that photo again? Please?"

"Listen, I wanted to say sorry about grabbing you like that earlier. I was surprised and I shouldn't have done that. Forgive me?"

She stared at his over exaggerated pout. “It’s fine, but I’ll only truly forgive you if you promise never make that face at me again. You look retarded.” Unable to keep her expression straight any longer, a large grin split her face.

The waitress came back with their orders, and Ceara, after giving her a nod and a smile in thanks, tore into her first waffle. Shoving the last piece into her mouth and chewing, she finally looked up from her plate and noticed Andrew wasn’t eating, instead poking his omelet around with a fork. She swallowed, about to ask him if anything was wrong, but he beat her to it. "Could I see that photo again? Please?"

Was that what this was about? Ceara nodded, shifting so she could pull out her wallet. She looked at the photograph for a moment, smiling, before sliding it over to him. “Uh, yeah. That’s my father. Why are you so interested in him anyway? Did you know him?”

"I make no promises. It made you smile, so mission accomplished."

He picked up the wallet, focusing on the picture. Yeah, that really did look like his uncle. Similar facial structure to his sperm donor's side of the family.

"Uh, yeah. That’s my father. Why are you so interested in him anyway? Did you know him?”

Andrew jerked his eyes up to hers again, dropping the wallet in his surprise. "Father? How old are you?" She didn't look much older than him, but... that didn't necessarily mean anything if they had all been lying.

Unnatural eyes flickered over her face, picking out familiar features that he had overlooked before. They had the same chin and her eyes were like both of his sisters'. Looking down at the picture, he couldn't help but draw comparisons there as well. Hell, her father could be mistaken for his if someone saw Andrew and this man walking together. Which made him wonder if people thought he and Haze were related when they glanced over.

"Is his name David?" And this was all too surreal.

"Father? How old are you?"

Ceara frowned. What was up with him and all these weird questions? “I turned 19 in June. Why?”

Andrew just simply stared at her, shock written plainly all over his features. She reached a hand up to wipe her mouth. Did she have something on her face? Shifting uncomfortably in her seat, she dropped her eyes to the table, his scrutiny starting to make her feel self-conscious. She jabbed a fork into the omelet, bringing it up to her mouth and taking a large bit before Andrew broke the silence with a question she did not expect at all.

“Is his name David?”

The omelet went down the wrong pipe at her sudden inhalation. Coughing, she took a large swig of coffee to clear her throat before returning his stare, purple eyes wide. “Yeah… His name’s David. Andrew, how the hell did you know that?” Because all of his weird questions and him knowing her father’s name was quickly becoming very weird. “Do you know something about my dad that I don’t, Andrew?”
