He liked working at the coffee shop, you hear such interesting things if you just listen for it and it looked completely ordinary for someone who looked like they were college age to be in such a humdrum job. He’s a good employee too, true he had dirt on the manager so he could technically get away with barely working at all but that would just be rude wouldn’t it.

He could really use a cigarette break though, his one weakness and it felt like forever since he last had one. Technically his break wouldn’t be for another 30 mins but it was a slow day, only a few old farts who had nothing better to do on a Tuesday in the middle of the afternoon.
Lit cigarette hanging loosely from his lips as he leaned his back against the counter, there were 2 other employees mingling about but they were all afraid of him and even if one of the kids tattletaled on him, what could the manager do? Caden liked the job, and if he liked a place he stayed there for as long as he liked.

There was a ding as someone entered through the door, effectively ruining his smoke. He snuffed it out on the dark green apron he was required to wear on the job and turned around with a pleasant smile on his face.

“Can I help you?”

Kota waited outside the coffee shop, waiting for the person who invited him. The person that was at least fifteen minutes later than him. And he was already ten minutes late himself (though he could blame it on the Metro). Said person most likely got distracted by anything and everything. At least the slow humdrum on the West nice. This part was peaceful-ish, or today was just a slow day in general.

Checking his phone for the umpteenth time, he reread the message:
'Meet me in that one coffee shop in the West at 2 kk? :D' She was oh so very specific wasn't she? If he'd never been here before, he wouldn't know where the fuck the blonde was referring too. He was starting to hate happy faces that followed text messages. It usually denoted they wanted something utterly annoying from him. Though this only applied to a few certain people.

Sighing, he decided to wait inside rather than stand like a loner for god knows how much longer. The door chimed when he went in and a chipper bleached-haired worker at greeted him. Huh, was he new? Not that Kota swung by all that often. His hair reminded him a bit of Trevor only because he didn't see many white haired people.

He smiled and said in his sugar tone, "Yeah just a mocha, no whipped cream." He would order a caramel frap for his companion too but he had absolutely no idea when she'd finally get here.

And the the door burst open behind him. Speak of devil...

To: Kota
Meet me in that one coffee shop in the West at 2 kk? :D
Leah hit SEND and checked the time on her phone. 1:00, it read. She put her phone into her tote and boarded the metro, which had just arrived. There was plenty of time and since Leah was in the East, the metro would go straight to the West. She wouldn't be late this time (probably)!

The metro arrived in the West District at 1:30. Leah bounced as she walked the road to the coffee shop. The girl hadn't really specified to Kota which coffee shop she was referring to, but she assumed that he would go to the one they went to last time and that was the place she was headed to.

At 1:40, Leah checked her phone for the time again. Wow, she really was early. The coffee shop was just around the corner too. But then she encountered a huuuuge land mine.

There was a sale at a clothing shop. The huge sale sign stood in front of the blondie, trying to lure her in. It wasn't really the sale that caught Leah's eye, though. It was the numerous racks of clothing. The colors were undoubtedly her kind of colors: bright yellow, electric green, neon purple... She had to go in there.

2:25 and Leah walked out of the shop with several bags that she stuffed into her tote. She skipped happily over to the coffee shop, oblivious to the time.

Kota was at the counter when Leah strolled in. She walked up next to him. "And add a caramel frappe with whip cream to that, please!" she sang cheerfully. Because frappes were so very awesome in the fall.

"Yeah just a mocha, no whipped cream." "And add a caramel frappe with whip cream to that, please!"

Well. A brat who thinks himself an adult and a living neon sign together in one day. He didn’t even need to use his power to see they were both harbingers, the brat was completely useless though in bright sunlight it seemed. And he partially wished the girl’s restitution was wearing the obnoxious neon clothes so she would at least have and excuse for the horrible fashion choice.

“Coming right up~” His pleasantries not faltering in the least. Is restitution was useful when you got used to it, he read their lips and got a vocal reminder a few seconds later of what the exact order was. The boy had to be skipping school, barely 2:30 and school didn’t get out for another 15 minutes. Either he was a little rebel or was smart enough to know school didn’t teach you shit.

“Here you go. 15 credits will be all.” Setting the two drinks on the counter and waiting for their pay so he could go back to his cigarette.

Kota internally cringed at his tone. Not that it sounded weird or anything but it sounded really, really similar to those teachers that tried to get him to go to school more often. Which reminded him. School. When was the last time he went? Probably a week or two ago. It was still in session right now. The blonde wondered if the cashier was judging him right now, just like every other person he met during school hours.

"Here. Thank you," he said, keeping his fit for whatever age he looked like and placing the right amount of credits down on the counter. He took his drink and let Leah grab her own while he headed to a seat in the back corner. He couldn't help but notice her cluster of shopping bags. Someone splurged today...

And why wouldn't she? She had enough money to do that whenever she wanted. As far as he knew her parents weren't short of money in the least and Leah didn't have to work to get a cent of it. He wasn't jealous, since he wasn't too bad off himself, but carrying all those was like flaunting her wealth. And we all know what gang members did to rich looking little girls.

There was a faint smell of cigarette smoke in the air, Leah noticed before she turned her attention to the man behind the counter. One look at his piercing yellow eyes was enough to tell Leah that he was definitely a harbinger. That meant that he automatically went on her mental list of people that she needed to about Kieren Vega.

Kieren Vega was Leah's long-lost older brother who ran away from home 13 years ago after an accident involving her and his power. He was the reason why she left her home in the North; she even swore that she wouldn't go back until she found her brother. That had only occurred 2 weeks ago and yet it already felt like such a distant memory...

While Leah was caught up in her thoughts, the cashier handed the two blondes their drinks and Kota paid for them. He took his and went to find a seat. Leah grabbed her frappuccino and sipped it at her spot at the counter. The frosty sweet beverage made its way down her throat. Delicious as always. She still had business with the cashier, though.

"Hey, are you allowed to smoke here? Just curious. I'm Leah, by the way. A typical harbinger. And you're a harbinger too, right? Wait I mean, duh, of course you are. Your eyes are definitely not a normal color. You know, your eyes are a reaaally pretty color. I wish mine were yellow like that. My eyes are just a plain old blue. With stars in them but those aren't that noticeable, you know? And your hair color is nice too. God, I kind of feel like bleaching my hair white now. But I probably won't 'cause it would damage my hair really badly. Oh and do you like working here? I've seen the manager before and he doesn't really seem like a nice guy. I mean, no offense or anything but one time I heard him yelling like crazy at this one worker for giving a customer the wrong drink."

Okay, now that the chatter was out of her system for the time being, she would ask about her brother.

"Also, I was wondering if you knew someone named Kieren Vega. Black hair and blue to orange eyes." Leah pulled a picture from her tote of 7-year-old Kieren and placed it on the counter. "This is what he looked like 13 years ago since I don't have any pictures that are more current."

Wow. The highlighter liked to talk it seemed. He wished she could learn to be like her friend and make their conversation short as possible. Her personality was just as irritatingly bright and loud as her clothes, and she was even flakier than she appeared at first, she’d probably keep on talking to herself if he left. And were those comments about the eyes and hair supposed to be cues to compliment her? It was even worse he had to pretend to look like he heard everything he was hearing lined up with her lip movements. He kept a bemused, interested look the entire time – torturous as it was- a 7 yr old would be able to tell this wasn’t even close to an intelligent conversation. "I can smoke on breaks and the manager isn't that bad when you get to know him." And if you just happened to have some knowledge that could get him fired and/or kill him with a phone call that was all good too. "You flatter me but honestly you're much prettier in my opinion." Oh the things he did to look like a respectable citizen.

"Also, I was wondering if you knew someone named Kieren Vega. Black hair and blue to orange eyes."

He wasn’t the goddamn police you know. What, just because he was a harbinger that means he knows every single one out there? True, he did keep tabs on a lot of people and got around a lot but still, the girls assumptions were a trifle annoying.

A picture of a little boy was handed over and he picked it up. He stared at it, like he was taking a long time to rummage through his memories for sight of a such a person. Yeah right, two seconds at looking at the picture he knew it would be a miracle if anyone recognized him. 13 years to grow? He’d look completely different –puberty does that to a person- and so so many factors could have left the kid dead for all he knew. If it weren’t for the distinctive harbinger eyes he would’ve told her it was hopeless.

Unfortunately the blue-orange eyes did ring some faint chord in his thoughts, though the person didn’t have black hair if he recalled correctly.
He shook his head sadly and slipped the photo back towards the girl. “I’m sorry but I’ll keep an eye out if I see anyone who looks like him.” Yes, and maybe tell him to never go home because his sisters an idiot.

Kota should have known Leah wanted to come to ask this guy about her long-lost brother. Apparently her plan was to ask every single Harbinger she came across if they had ever seen someone that looked like her brother from the photograph. Yeah Kota thought it was kind of useless too. He didn't think Kieren would be alive at this point either, but Leah wouldn't listen to that. If her brother wanted to come home, he would have already, since he left on his own accord. What a dumb attempt, and Kota thought that if someone other than himself told her how vain this was, she'd give up.

But the store keeper was being really nice about it. Even with that whole paragraph Leah just spewed. He wondered if it was friendly customer service keeping him polite. What sensible person would actually not tell her that she was in over her head? It's not like she looked like a twelve year old.

The blonde sipped his latte quietly, glancing skeptically at the cashier. There was nothing suspicious about him really. Nothing at all. But nice people weren't all what they seem.

He stood, drink in hand, and walked over to his companion, tapping her lightly on the shoulder to get her attention. "Let's go," he said, picking up the cold frappe. Turning to the cashier, Kota gave him an apologetic smile, "Sorry for taking up your time." And he nudged Leah out of the store, ignoring her protests.

Was she this frickin annoying with every person she inquired?
