The past week had been both mildly irritating and a pleasant challenge. Her fellow harbinger certainly had done a thorough job at keeping his two lives separate, but she had always been good at ferreting out secrets and it wasn't as if she didn't have her own resources to call on. In all, she would compare it to a game of cat and mouse, only the mouse hadn't known he was playing.

Marian gave a soft smile to the host of the restaurant, but turned down being seated. "Thank you, but I am meeting with someone." And it was as simple as that for her to continue into the upscale establishment and toward her target. A valid excuse and the proper attire (a skirt suit in this case) and that was all it took. If she were here with the intent to assassinate him, she likely could before anyone was aware of what was going on. Pathetic security presence, that was certain. Of course, he was also much newer to the... night scene, as it were, than she was so perhaps he hadn't developed full blown paranoia just yet?

Concealing a soft scowl, she brushed her loose hair from behind her ear and stopped next to the table the blond man she wanted to speak to was sitting at. "Excuse me? Might I have a moment of your time?"

The past week had been rather dull and uneventful, which was both a blessing and a curse when you were the leader of a gang. On one hand, Vector was glad things had quieted down since the last time he'd had anything too stressful going on. On the other hand, that made his job really easy. Too easy. And in his books, when something was too easy it meant there was something horribly wrong. It had made him just the slightest bit wary, but nothing too unusual has transpired. Which of course meant that trouble was just waiting for him to find it. Or more likely, it was waiting to find him.

It just so happened that he'd decided to go out for lunch for once. That sort of thing had been a lot more common before he'd become Boss, but ever since he tried to keep as low a profile as possible both in the daylight hours and during the night. But sometimes you couldn't help it, and this was one of those times. Besides, it wasn't just a pleasure visit. He was also scouting the place out> He had some important business to attend to in the days to come, and he'd rather it be done in a more refined setting, for several reasons. Privacy didn't always equate to safety. In fact, a lot of the times it was the opposite that was true.

The first warning bell sounded when a complete stranger decided to stop by the table and ask if she could have a quick word with him.

He smiled and gestured at the vacant seat across from him.

"Why, of course."

There was a noticeable lack of available weapons around him. But he figured that if he knocked his glass off the table, he could turn it into a projectile in under three seconds.

"To what do I owe this pleasure, Miss...?"

Smiling softly, the button to her suit jacket was undone with a deft, practiced flick of her fingers then Marian sat, smoothing her skirt as she did so. She met his eyes, not trying to conceal the unnaturalness of them. "I was hoping that we could discuss business," she explained, folding her hands on the table in front of her and intertwining her fingers. It was a calculated move to show him that she wasn't holding any form of weapon and took her hands out of the equation for a short while in the instance of sudden violence.

"But first, to reassure you, I am requesting parley." Though it was likely odd for him to hear a request for truce when he didn't even know who she was, she was assuming that he would understand what she meant and that she didn't have any intention to attack him.

"As to my name... Well, even with approaching you during the day, I certainly do not trust you enough to tell you. If you are that interested, you could possibly find me." She leaned forward, pitching her voice lower so that only he would be able to hear her, making a coy and somewhat flirtatious picture for anyone observing them. "Let me congratulate you on your promotion. Removing the Silence in the Script should certainly improve the play, do you not think?"

Business, she said.

What a wonderfully classy way to state your purpose, he mused.

After tracking someone down to a rather fancy restaurant and asking them for a moment of their time, of course. She was very well-composed, her outfit perfectly suited to the ambiance of the restaurant. This was of course well thought out and planned in advance. So it would seem her tact lends itself to wardrobe choices as well, he thought wryly. But all jokes aside, he knew she was skilled. And dangerous, probably even moreso.

Then there was the fact that she was a harbinger and not afraid not show it, either. He wasn't sure whether her steady confidence or her unpredictability given her harbinger status was more disconcerting in this situation. Probably the first, he decided. Harbingers were one thing--they were a dime a dozen when you ran one of the three most prominent gangs in the city. Harbingers he could deal with. But someone with that surety in their gaze, not clouded by hubris or bravado or the hundreds of varieties of overconfidence--now that was something to truly be cautious of. Even if she'd made it clear with the innocuous (but no doubt calculated) clasping of her hands on the table that she wasn't holding any weapons. There were many different types of weapons out there. But a lot of people didn't realize that sometimes your body was the only weapon necessary.

He perked up visibly at the mention of parley. Now that was a term he hadn't heard in quite some time, unfortunately. Probably because it was the smart man's treatise, and there just seemed to be so few of those around these days.

This was certainly interesting.

"It would be foolish of me not to accept that offer."

As for the rest, he composed his face, smiling a bit at that last whisper. She was really quite good at this. He was suitably impressed, and sure that business with her would no doubt be no less impressive. News tended to travel around quite fast, though congratulations were a bit of a surprise. However, what was surprising was the combination of her knowledge of the fact, putting a face to the name, and by far the most disconcerting, her ability to track him down without him being aware of it. Obviously he was getting sloppy. That or her skills at tracking were just that much better. Not something he was willing to toss out the window given what he'd seen so far.

"That's only natural. And perhaps I may."

He leaned forward on his elbow, resting his chin on his palm.

"And thank you. I like to think that I'm a harder worker, as you are no doubt yourself."

He wondered how many days she'd spent puzzling out his movement patterns.

A glimmer of amusement flashed through her eyes and she let a soft smirk tug at her lips. "Oh, yes. It's been an interesting chase this past week," she murmured, shifting her hands since he had agreed to parley. Wrapping one long, manicured hand around the water that had been set down earlier, she lifted it and took a sip.

"Personally, I had appointed a proxy, but she was proving to be unworthy of the trust I was willing to extend her. And her attack dog was getting rabid and needed to be put down." She shrugged, completely at ease with their surroundings and the veiled conversation they were having. "I will admit that my biggest curiosity about you is if this is just an amusement to you or a legitimate business venture for you. After all, just a couple of years ago, the projected vectors were quite different." She smiled a bit wider, the expression not reaching her eyes. "If it is legitimate, then we can discuss business. If it is a whim, then I'll be on my way again." The question was, how curious was he going to be about her?

Ah, and there she confirmed it. She'd been on the hunt for the past week. Vector couldn't help but feel disappointed that she'd been able to find him that quickly but at the same time impressed that even with her skill--and no doubt impressive arsenal of resources at hand--he'd managed to elude her for as long as he did. So it wasn't all for nothing, in the end. Though, he made a mental note to change his patterns for the next little while and add a few more tricks. You could never have too many of those, now.

He smiled as well. Her ability to roll with the veiled discussion they were having was impressive. What else was impressive was how bold she was--Vector might even say it was verging on gall, but not quite. She'd walked in, revealed that she was tailing him, said that she wanted to do business with him, and then basically asked him flat out whether this would be a waste of her time or not. She had guts, and he had to admit that it was pretty impressive. She was clearly a professional, at home in the role she was playing.

"You're right, but I do believe that the new vector projections, though relatively premature, have much promise."

He sat back in his chair. He had to be careful with this one. She was sharp, with a silver tongue, and he knew way too many people like that to let himself slip up here.

"Though, one's got to wonder whether you were banking on that, what with all the effort you put in. If so, I can't help but be interested in business dealings with you, now can I?"

She nodded, a glint of satisfaction in her eyes, then shifted her weight the smallest bit and crossed her legs at the knee, settling into a more at ease position. "Your work with Synaptech is something to be admired. I am a bit of an entrepreneur myself, though my organization is a bit more on the outer Fringes of public domain," she said, sharp gaze on him to see how he reacted when he realized just who she was claiming to be. Unlike Vector, Griffin had worked his way up the long and hard way, taking the better part of five years establishing his name and well earned reputation as someone you didn't cross lightly. Her misdirection was so good that there were few people who knew that he was actually female.

"To be honest, I am hoping that we can reach an agreement to keep things... civil. Even with our groups in competition with one another, I see no reason that we cannot find a mutually beneficial arrangement. It would certainly avoid some of the mess that our predecessors partook in."

Vector really didn't like his identity known. In fact it was a thing that made him extremely uncomfortable given the large amount of time he'd put into covering his tracks and keeping his public and private lives separate. Unfortunately some things just could not be avoided. If people didn't keep finding new, creative ways of outsmarting alarm systems, there would be no need to keep making them more effective. Similarly, if someone didn't come around and keep you on your toes, it was easy to fall into a little funk. He would learn a lot from this experience.

He raised his eyebrows at the next thing she said, letting out a breathy laugh.

"Ah, is it now? Forgive me if I question your credentials right off the bat."

He said it without any trace of haughtiness or pretension in his tone. Realistically, however, he had almost no doubt that she was in fact who she said she was. For one, she was able to find him in a rather short amount of time. For another, if she wasn't, that was an incredibly large amount of time wasted just to pretend to be a Gang Boss. He'd listen to her offer and then decide on what to do from there. It didn't seem to be anything too pressing, if his intuition was right.

"That sounds like it would be for the best. There is strength in numbers after all."

She gave another one of those smiles that did nothing to warm her expression and reached inside her suit jacket. Withdrawing her hand again, she placed what looked like a folded up photograph on the tablecloth and slid it over with one finger, waiting for him to touch it before pulling her hand away. "That might help my credentials. Because, you see, I found you the other day. Yesterday was used for research," she said, gesturing at the photo and watching him closely again. She was curious how he would react, if he would grow angry or fearful or brush it off, and how well he hid his reaction when he saw that the picture was of his nephew.

"I am not here to threaten you, or him, or anyone else. As a matter of fact, I grow displeased when innocents are harmed unnecessarily. Yes, sometimes needs must in our line of work, but senseless killings are... rather uncouth." She leaned back in her chair, lightly crossing her arms as she watched him. "My proposition is that we set up an exchange of information. Business would continue as usual, but anything that could change the game, such as the loss of a major piece," meaning assassination or raid or something similar, "Would be something to share. After all, differing companies we may be, we are still on the same side of the board. And new pieces can spoil the long term strategy." Chess comparisons seemed rather fitting to her, all things considered, especially since, as gang bosses, they kind of were using their members as the pieces.

Griffin gave him another one of those smiles which would probably be considered disconcerting if he was easily intimidated. Luckily, he was far from it after having risen up the ranks in the Guild and taken control in one fell sweep. He quirked an eyebrow as she slid over the folded-up photograph, wondering exactly what it was that would 'help her credentials'. He leaned forward in his chair and unfolded the paper.

Whatever he was expecting, it was certainly not a picture of his nephew.

Vector sat back in his chair, laughing. Her explanation afterwards was similarly amusing to him. He wasn't worried about her harming Trace, or using it as a threat. He was reasonably sure they were both aware of each other's skill, and a confrontation would be quite undesirable, regardless of what she'd dug up about him. Besides, she'd come to propose a business deal as equals, and using blackmail would not fly well. In any case, she made her point quite clear.

"You make a good argument. I am very much interested in this proposition, to be honest, as it does serve in all our best interests," which meant their continuing control of their respective gangs and also their survival, "but I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask for a little time before I give you my final answer. This decision is of huge consequence to the future of our gangs as well as that of my own, and I personally think it would be foolish to accept it in the spur of the moment, regardless of how promising an offer it may be."

His laughter wasn't expected in any way and, if she were to be honest, she found it irritating. Not that she would show that; it would tip her hand somewhat after all and show that she could be gotten to. So, all that she did, was raise one finely arched eyebrow and watch him.

Nodding at what he said, she stood with a mildly approving smile. "Of course. It would be only prudent. Thank you for your time." She turned to go but paused as if just remembering something and looked at him. "Do be careful not to spill orange on that. It is a rather nice photograph; it would be a pity if it was ruined." Of course, it would also reveal the time and which day next week for him to meet her as well as an address for which building to meet on the roof of.

She gave another small smile and inclined her head slightly before turning away again. "Have a good evening." Things had gone much better for that meeting than she had expected they would.

Vector studied the photo in closer detail. It was a close-up shot, so the location was a bit of a mystery--it could be any one of the hundreds of places the city had to explore, given Trace's nature. Of course, Trace kept his sightseeing strictly during daylight hours--or at least that's what he'd told him--so it wasn't too likely that he'd get into any trouble. He wasn't too worried about Trace's safety though. He was a good kid, and he'd been hand-trained by Vector himself. The kid was pretty sharp and a threat with or without his trusty bō in his hands. The only thing he lacked was experience. Someone like Griffin would find it all too easy to take him out. Maybe after he got into some real rights, learned what fighting was really about, fought with life-or-death stakes--that would hone his skill and make him deadly in his own right.

Vector stood up in time with his guest. It was poor manners, after all, to remain seated like that. "There's no need to thank me. The pleasure's all mine, I assure you." He watched her pause mid-step and turn, listening to her warning with a small smile. "I'll be careful to try to avoid that if possible. Alas, some things are just inevitable."

Hearing her farewell, he sat back down in his seat.

"And you as well."

The loads of things for him to consider weren't going to shrink by themselves anytime soon.

As she left, Griffin couldn't help but wonder if he would try looking into her. It would be the intelligent thing to do after all, and put them on a more even footing. She just wasn't sure how much he would find since she hadn't gone to the lengths he had to separate the two lives. Of course, it wasn't often that people saw her in the first place so she didn't have quite as many misdirections as he did.

Oh well, she'd likely find out next week. It would be interesting, that was for sure.

On Saturday, she let herself onto the roof of the address she had given him about ten minutes before the given time. It was an empty apartment building along the border of Fringe and Guild territory so it was rather neutral as far as meeting grounds went.

She glanced around as she walked over to the roof edge, her open coat moving around her hips. Either Vector was here already and she'd see him or he wasn't and she'd hear when he arrived. Whichever way it was, her power would serve her well here between the ambient light and the smooth rocks underfoot.

Post by Vector Wed Jun 12, 2013 12:12 am

Of course, given the fact that their meeting was scheduled for sometime the next week, Vector was delighted to find he had ample time to learn more about this woman. It was only fair given she'd had the chance to do her own snooping on him. Naturally, he couldn't try to manually tail her given her skill in the field and the fact that she was aware he might try that--all in all too risky a maneuver-- so instead he would have to track her digitally.

He was relatively satisfied with the amount of information he could find within that time. Enough to put them on relatively equal ground, virtually washing away the initial discomfort he'd felt at his cleverly-constructed and elaborate misdirections having been torn down. Virtually, but not completely.

Of course he showed up 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled time on Saturday night. Griffin herself would likely show up ahead of time--either a fashionably early 10 minutes or far in advance just in case. His first guess turned out to be correct, and so he perched on one of the edges of the roof and waited for her to arrive. This was a pretty good meeting place with all things considered, as it was right between defined Fringe and Guild territory and thus effectively neutral. And symbolic of the deal she sought between them.

After a good twenty minutes of waiting Vector heard the door to the roof open and watched as Griffin walked to the opposite edge, back to him.

"Good evening," he called before making his way over to her. It was a lot safer for both of them for him to announce his presence, just in the off-chance of her not noticing his presence and getting startled as a result. Unlikely, but possibly and definitely undesirable for them both.

"I might have suggested we meet at a more upscale location had I known you're the heiress to a rather prominent business yourself."

Griffin glanced back over one shoulder then turned to face him, her shoulders relaxing a small bit when she saw that he was alone. She had come here with the knowledge that he may try to ambush her and so was ready with her favorite pistol and set of throwing knives, but it was always reassuring to know that her instincts had been correct - not that she wouldn't be prepared for if she were wrong, as evidenced by her hidden weapons.

"Vector," she greeted with another one of those half-smiles. Her hair was tied back in a braid and the practical clothes that she was wearing showed him that she had come prepared. "And you know those places. All the walls have eyes. One meeting between us would be easily written off, but a second? Not so." She shrugged a little and leaned back against the half wall, setting her hands easily on the edge. "So, now that we are on the same level, what are your thoughts on my proposition?" She leaned her weight on one arm, crossing her legs at the knee and watching him again.

She came armed and dressed for a fight, if it had come come to that. It'd be a big mistake if she hadn't--he could've planned an ambush for her, and wearing an outfit like she did at their last meeting would not do her any favors when it got down to it. Vector himslef was similarly prepared, gloves on and weapons safely stored for easy access if needed. After all, she could have just as easily planned out an ambush for him. Fortunately it looked like they both chose the better option.

"That is true," he said, grinning. "Though, to be honest this location has the added bonus of being more appropriate, given the circumstances of our meeting."

He ran his hand through his hair and regarded her before giving his answer. "I think, despite the inherent risks, that your proposition is most advantageous to us both. Not accepting it would be a great mistake on my part."

While fighting in a pencil skirt would be difficult and somewhat restrictive, it was something she had done before and likely would end up doing again at some point. Of course, she preferred ranged fighting anyway so it was a bit of a moot point anyway.

She inclined her head a bit in agreement over the location then gave him a mildly curious look, raising her eyebrows, in response to his study of her. A small, pleased smile came over her features and she stood again. "I am glad that we are in agreement then," she said calmly, stepping nearer to offer her hand for him to shake. "We shall have to work out the fine details, of course, but I think that this will best allow us to profit. At the very least, it will allow us to stabilize and prepare." She was under no illusions that eventually the government wouldn't tire of ignoring them. "After all, today's villains may very well be tomorrow's heroes." Not that she viewed herself as one or ever would, but if it came to that, she would exploit it. It was what the businesswoman inside of her would do.

Vector moved forward to shake her hand firmly, smiling. This deal might very well end up his--or perhaps both of their--downfalls in the future, but at the current moment it was the best option given the circumstances. It promised to be very advantageous to them both, and definitely not something Vector would be satisfied in passing up.

"Yes, of course. This is big change to account for, after all." Preparation and planning were key at this stage in order to make sure that things ran smoothly. There were still many things to work out, but that the deal, overall at least, was confirmed was good to know.

"And that is also true. After all, hero or villain rests in the hand of he who calls the toss."

Things were starting to take a turn for the interesting, to put it lightly, in the city. Children had started disappearing very suspiciously across the city, all from a specific age range, and given the whole 'no kidnapping' tenet of the unwritten Gang Rulebook, the perpetrators and their motives were both unknown. Vector had a nagging feeling that the gangs would be dragged into the mess somehow, even indirectly sometime in the future, and it would be good to have an ally when whatever was going on finally came to light.

She nodded at his question. "That would likely be the best course. We can determine the next meeting at each one. My schedule is rather... flexible." The joys of owning your own private business. "In addition to that, I have already taken the liberty of renting a post office box with cash that we can use in the event that something unexpected arises." She reached into a pocket to pull out a small key and pass it to him. "I am sure that you can find it on your own, and that you will likely enjoy looking," she said, the barest hint of amusement coloring her tone.

Crossing her arms over her chest, Griffin rested her weight on one leg, cocking her hip out a bit and tilting her head back to meet his eyes. "If we are fortunate, Network's Haus will be willing to agree to do business with us as well. However, I have yet to determine the best course with which to approach him. Do you have any ideas?" Vector had been rather easy to decide on how to speak with him, it was finding him in the first place that hadn't been easy.

"Yeah," he agreed. "That sounds like the safest bet. And I'm also rather flexible." With his job at SynapTech, he wasn't actually required to be there remotely as much as he was. He just enjoyed staying up to date and getting an insider's view on the different projects they were always working on. Most of his work could be done online anyway since they'd recently gone almost completely digital. And as for the Guild, he usually finished his work, if any, way ahead of time.

He was pretty much almost always free to do whatever it is he wanted. Which usually meant working ahead even if it was unnecessary, giving him even more spare time in the long run.

Vector chuckled as he accepted the key from her. "Thank you. Indeed I will." It was perfect. Bought with cash so as not to leave a discernible trail. Of course, that made it more difficult to find. But in reality, that would only make the hunt that much more enjoyable.

"As for Haus, I'm not sure. My predecessors didn't leave me much on him, so I went to the liberty of doing just a little snooping to augment the sparse notes bequeathed to me. From what I've heard, he's quite the interesting character, but not unapproachable in the slightest."

He trailed off a bit, weighing the few options he could think of at the moment.

"Perhaps an impromptu joint meeting? One with a slightly delayed arrival of the third party, so as not to startle him?"

She shook her head a bit. "Nor did mine. But then, my predecessors were extremely disorganized and the not the type to fully appreciate the delicate planning you and I seem to prefer." She shrugged a bit, brushing it off as unimportant because at this point, it was.

At his suggestion, Griffin made a soft sound and raised an eyebrow, looking vaguely amused. "So, you would like to do to him what I did to you?" she asked, one corner of her mouth lifting a small bit. Pursing her lips as she thought, she eventually nodded. "Well, it has proven effective so far. I shall let you approach him first. You are much more personable than I am. And I have better vision than you do so I will be able to watch for the best time to approach." And no, that wasn't arrogance speaking, it was true enough. Her mutation saw to that for her. "Shall we meet again in two weeks time and share any information that we may find on him? We can determine when and where would be the best to approach him then."

Vector couldn't help but smirk. "Yes, I think it could be effective."

He took note of her comment. Better vision, huh? That was one more puzzle piece, or more likely the general outline of a puzzle piece. Whether her ability was enhanced vision, something that encompassed it, or even something that lent her better eyesight as a side-effect, it was still worthy of note. He dealt in information after all, and knowledge was power. To him at least.

"That works for me," he said, still mulling the idea over. "Given two weeks, I think we should have no problem compiling sufficient information to piece together the best time."

He ran a hand through the hair at the nape of his neck, quickly summarizing and making note of the main points of the meeting thus far.

"And on that note, would this be a reasonable time to end the meeting? Or are there other pressing matters you'd like to discuss?"

A Business Proposition -- Griffin, Vector [complete] Empty Re: A Business Proposition -- Griffin, Vector [complete]

Giving a morsel of information on her genetic quirk didn't really amount to much as far as she was concerned. He knew what her real name was which meant that he could easily use the Index to look up what the government knew of it. It was her restitution that she more jealously guarded.

She nodded her head in agreement. "Nothing that can't wait. Pleasure doing business with you Vector. I look forward to future dealings," she said, turning away and moving to the roof's edge. "Have a good evening." With that, she stepped onto the little half wall that was there as a safety barrier and then off of it, landing on the fire escape nearly fifteen feet below with a soft clang that was hard to hear over the city's normal bustling noises.

It had certainly been an interesting meeting and she was willing to bet good money that most of them would be, she thought as she made her way calmly down the stairs. She was also absently wondering what that odd little stunt of hers had made her new business associate think, but looking back would spoil the effect she was going for. Normally she wasn't one for theatrics, but that didn't mean they weren't fun when used properly.

Vector considered taking the easy way out and using the Index. Now that she'd given him the clue, it wouldn't feel so much like cheating. Besides, he could always cross-reference the little tidbit with whatever the Index said to see if there were any inconsistencies. After all, governments made mistakes too. And far more often than the general populace thought.

"The pleasure is all mine, I assure you. And good evening to you as well, Griffin." Oh yes, these meetings would prove to be quite interesting, he had no doubt. He raised an eyebrow as she climbed onto the little half-wall partition and then she was gone.

Walking toward the edge, he couldn't help but grin wolfishly. That was surprising. Surprisingly unexpected coming from such a practical woman, that is. Theatrics only served to enhance the experience. Who said you couldn't have a little fun and spice things up every once in a while?

Very well done, Griffin. Color me impressed. I wonder what else you have in store for me in the future.
