The Vagabonds [Andrew][Marjorie]

Post by EllaKey on Wed Jan 16, 2013 2:21 am

[Not 100% what I'm doing so just disclaimer here. Yeah, IDEK]

Marjorie Watchel had just finished bleaching and dying her hair, and she felt fresh and clean, more so than when she bathed. Even the sides of her head were itchy from the fresh shave. It left her grinning, despite the heavy package in her bag she was meant to deliver. She was running a little late, but she was also traveling from the East District to the South. Okay, so not as far as the North, but it was a hassle when all one had was a pair of feet. She kept walking quickly and surely, trying not to get bumped about too much for fear of her precious bottle of ink getting crushed. She needed to invest in a more reasonable method of preserving her ink, but for now, the glass bottle that refilled her rapidograph pens would just have to cut it. Her sketchbook dug into her thigh as she quickened her pace. It wouldn’t do to be too late. The last time that had happened for this man…she rubbed her forearms, unable to keep from making a face despite the looks her brightly colored hair – easily visible being in most people’s line of sight – was already drawing her. Even though she knew the scars on her forearms were healed, she winced at some half remembered pain and stopped rubbing, crossing her arms instead.

It was cold so naturally Andrew was running to keep warm. And tonight was supposed to be even colder. He was thinking of taking up his boyfriend on the offer to stay over whenever. And wasn't that a thought that just made him warm and giddy inside? That someone liked him enough to want to be with him. And yeah, it might be moving a bit fast, but the guy was really sweet and made the red haired harbinger feel special. And that was something he couldn't say happened all that often.

Of course, he was also on a delivery himself and he always ran those. It was fun after all, and that was more than enough reason for him.

He turned a corner and dodged around a few people, and almost completely missed the girl with the colorful hair. And by missed, it was seeing.

Andrew came to an abrupt stop, just inches in front of her, and teetered on his toes, his hands reflexively settling on her shoulders so he didn't crash into her and knock them both over. He also might have accidentally kissed her on the forehead as he caught himself.

Pulling back quickly, he took a step back and held up his hands to show he meant no harm. "Sorry! Sorry. I wasn't looking. You okay?" he asked with a charming, if somewhat embarrassed, smile.

The yank on her shoulders were enough to freak her out, nearly earning a pop in the jaw or worse if she had a pen out (that’s why she kept needing more pens and was always broke). Shi – wait, this guy wasn’t with the cops. He looked to wimpy to really belong. Oh and there was the forehead kiss thing that sent color flooding up into her cheeks. She whipped back, crossing her arms tightly around her bag. “Oi! Watch where you’re going,” she exclaimed rubbing at her forehead. That was like a brother kiss or something, really weird. She adjusted her bag nervously, eyeing him carefully. He looked…sort of like a harbringer. She couldn’t get close enough to see his eyes. “I’m fine I guess.” She flushed more and pulled her scarf up over her mouth and cheeks. “Why’re you in such a rush anyway?” As usual, curiosity won out over irritation or a sense of time urgency. She checked that her ink was okay though, one hand in her bag to squeeze the bottle lightly as she raked her eyes over the taller guy.

Andrew grinned and shrugged, slipping his hands into his jacket pockets. He had finally gotten a new one, obviously well-worn and second hand but it was warm and that was what he had needed. He wasn't wearing his only pair of gloves because they had some reinforcing to them and made his hands a little stiff and didn't have a hat so the tips of his ears were red. And the orange scarf he had wrapped around his neck clashed a bit with his dark red hair, but he clearly didn't care about that. It was warm as well as having been a gift so he was damn well going to wear it.

"It's cold and running is a good way to keep warm. I like running. And I'm supposed to be making a delivery, but that can be any time today so I'm not super concerned." He tilted his head a little, leaning closer to peer at her face. Huh. Harbinger. Cute girl. Kind of reminded him of Lilian and Ceara all mixed together. "You sure you're okay? You're redder than you were." He hoped it wasn't because of him, or that she was about to use her power and blast him or something.

She took a step back, pulling her scarf up further so only her eyes and forehead were visible. But she got a good look at his eyes. They made hers look nearly normal in comparison. “I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before,” she said slowly, giving him another suspicious look. Her clothes were pretty ragged at this point and she had maybe five layers on to combat the cold, all the shirts and hoodies she owned. Her leggings under her skirt weren’t very thick though and she shivered, deciding it was best to start walking again before they went numb. She stopped a few steps ahead and turned around to watch him curiously. “My package is already late, so I have to run ahead. If you aren’t one of those goody-goodies -” by his clothes he didn’t look it “- you can tag along.” She had an ulterior motive for inviting him. She wasn’t much of a fighter and if the man was pissed at her for being oh about an hour or so late with his purchase, she would rather have someone watching her back and possibly drag her out of the way if she overextended herself. She shivered again, but this time not from the cold. She really hated guns.

He gave a careless shrug. "I am like the wind. I go anywhere as it suits me," he said then laughed. Yeah, he sounded like an airhead, but he was fine by that. If people underestimated him, he was quite alright with that; it made things easier for him to get the hell out of dodge when shit went down.

Andrew couldn't help the soft frown at how she was dressed. It was similar to how he was, all layers to hopefully insulate. Thing was, she was wearing a skirt and leggings. This must be her first winter out on her own if she didn't know that wasn't enough.

He blinked at her offer for him to tag along, wondering what her angle was, before he shrugged and smiled, confident he could outrun her if she decided to attack him. He fell into step next to her. "What'd you mean by 'goody-goody'?" he asked, careful to keep some distance between them. She seemed a bit skittish as it was and he didn't want to make it worse.

Glancing at her when she shivered again, he did a quick mental count of the credits he had. Yeah, he'd have enough to take her to a cafe for a hot meal. Because he was willing to bet that she was in the same situation he had been when he had gotten kicked out and any shred of kindness then would have meant a lot to him. Hopefully she hadn't gotten to the point he had and started to sell herself.

Marjorie relaxed as he followed, catching up to her. “I hear that there’s some people, harbringers or normal people, that will get all friendly and then find out that you’re doing something illegal and hand you over for a coupla credits. My parents were like that.” She rubbed the arm holding her bag close to her body, almost afraid that someone would guess she was carrying something illegal and snatch it away. She had to look up to see Andrew’s face, and then the sun made her glasses tint darken, making it harder to tell what he looked like. She was usually grateful for that; her sensitivity to light usually outlasted all her other symptoms for using her power. “I’m Marjorie by the way. Some people call me Marge, but I’m not too fond of them.” Adjusting the hold on her bag, she held one hand out, her fingerless gloves hiding most of the scars on her hand, except for the white dots on the tips of her fingers. There wasn’t much she could do about those really, but she had stopped using a finger pricker to draw blood.

Oh, those kinds of people. He laughed softly. "There's less of those than you'd think. And I wouldn't call them goody-goodies, just people trying to get ahead." He gestured at his own clothes then hers. "Like us. Just different ways for people to do it." He shrugged then grinned down at her.

“I’m Marjorie by the way. Some people call me Marge, but I’m not too fond of them.”

He took her hand and shook it before deciding to be a bit of a smartass and turning her hand slightly to bow over it and press a gallant kiss to the back of her hand. "Andrew. I don't really let people shorten my name either," he said with a laugh, letting go of her hand again and shoving his into his pocket again. He had seen the small scars on her finger tips but didn't mention them, assuming that she was diabetic or something and that she wouldn't want it brought up. Instead, he kind of eyed her again.

"Neat hair. How'd you do it? Have a pro do it?" He doubted that considering her clothes. If she had money, she wouldn't use it on a hair cut, she'd save it for food or when she needed to replace clothes. Or, she'd quickly learn to if she hadn't already. Which reminded him... "By the way, how old are you?" Hopefully she wouldn't get mad that he had asked. She seemed interesting.

Re: The Vagabonds [Andrew][Marjorie]

Andrew. That was a good, ordinary name, she thought. His parents hadn’t attempted to be clever likes hers had obviously. The kiss on the back of her hand made her flush though, all the way to the tips of her ears. Was he trying to be funny? That was the second time he’d kiss her. Did she even count the one on her forehead? “My hair? Nah, I do it myself. A bottle of H2O2, kool-aid, and a good sharp razor for the sides and I’m all set for a couple weeks. Til the kool-aid fades out again.” As for her age, she hesitated. She knew she could get in trouble for not going to school; she’d been homeschooled but whenever she’d been allowed to go out, she’d attracted strange looks (this was before the hair). “You sure you’re not a goody-goody?” she waited a moment before continuing, ignoring his reply. “I’m fifteen. I’ve been on the streets of a year. Turn here.” She pointed to an alley across the street, cutting across while the lights ahead were changing. She was a quick mover, light on her feet.

He gave her a confused look. What the hell was H2O2? Well, it's not like it could hurt to ask. "What's that? H2O2? Not water, I know that's H2O." He nodded at her answer. Okay. He hadn't ever been good at chemistry so he'd take her word for it that it worked. Must be one of those odd girl things. Wait, maybe not girl since he was pretty sure Kota would know.

He glanced at Marjorie and smiled, letting out a soft laugh as he thought about how the small blond would react to her hair. He'd have to make sure the other knew not to comment about her clothes since she was in the same situation as he was and while he didn't much care if he was picked on, it would likely bother her to be.

He followed her, absently going around things and occasionally over others. "So, is this your first winter out here alone?" he asked, smiling lightly at how she moved. She was clearly a runner; he wondered if she did parkour or gymnastics, or, if she didn't, if she'd be interested in learning. He was finding himself fond of her already. She was spunky, just like Ceara. Now just hopefully she didn't turn out to be another long lost cousin because that would just be a little creepy.

”H2O2, also known as hydrogen peroxide. Very tricky stuff.” She twisted about to walk backwards, still keeping her bag trapped under one arm, smiling at the redhead. ”First winter? Sorta. I ran of right after my birthday last year, so this would be my second. But I wore out my old clothes.” She made a face, tugging on her skirt a bit and turning back around when he caught up. They were getting pretty close to her destination. It was probably time to fill Andrew in. “Okay, a bit of warning. Carter is about the fattest guy you’ll ever meet cause he’s got family up in the North District all but ready to go to Acropolis if they had the right paperwork. And you know how that goes.” She shrugged. ”He took me under his wing last winter actually. I got to a pretty low place. He gives me the stuff I need, including credits in exchange for odd jobs.” She didn’t bother mentioning she was about to the same place as last winter, carefully pulling her sketchbook out of her bag. ”Now, if you don’t mind waiting, I need to make sure I’m prepared, just in case.”

Andrew nodded slowly, knowing what she meant about this guy. He sounded like a good portion of Andrew's own family. Which pretty much almost guaranteed that the red head was going to hate his guts. Odds were that he was pretentious and was going to look down on the both of them and have that fucking sense of entitlement that pissed him off so much.

This was going to be fun.

He stopped and tilted his head when she pulled out her pad, pen, and ink. What the heck did she need to draw that would help her get prepared? And get prepared for what anyway? He crouched down next to her so he could watch her draw. She was pretty good. "I prefer charcoal and pencils to ink. I can never get the lines to stay the thickness I want and not bleed." Grinning at the surprised look she tossed his way, he shrugged. "What? Did you think I was just a pretty face?" he asked then laughed before nodding at the paper. "What do you need that for?" She had already said she was late so why she was taking time to draw was beyond him.

She ignored his questions for the moment, swishing the contents of the ink bottle to make sure it was mixed. She carefully filled her pen, still trying to wrap her mind around the fact this guy was also into art. ”I told you, it’s just in case. And this is the best of the best tools. So they don’t bleed into the paper at all.” She started sketching in a small frog, smiling a bit at the design. The ink had a reddish tinge to it and when she finished the last sticky toe of the creature, she capped pen and ink, placing it back in her bag carefully.
”Give this a minute to dry. After my last visit, I don’t want to go in alone-“ she looked up at the redhead meaningfully ”-or unprepared, even if it is exhausting afterwards.” She turned back to her sketchbook, focusing on the drawing. The reddish-black creature slowly started to rise out of the paper, pulling its hind legs free last. It hopped into her waiting hand as she smiled to herself, packing her sketchbook up with her free hand. ”What do you think of my construct?” The energy required to keep it ‘alive’ was already draining on her. It slipped into her hoodie’s sleeve, out of sight.

He frowned softly, giving her an odd look. After her last visit? If she was so bothered about returning somewhere that she'd take someone she had just met, then why the hell was she going back?

His eyebrows rose at the frog coming to life. That was... "That's pretty cool. How many can you do? How big? What kind of limitations are there?" He cut himself off and pressed his lips together, forcing himself not to bounce where he was crouching. As an artist as well, he was a bit jealous that she could do that. Not that he'd want a different power, he'd never be able to do half the shit running as he did already.

He straightened, shaking his head lightly, and offered her a hand. "Nevermind. You can tell me later." Andrew smirked here. "You said you were late as it was. Let's get this done then you can tell me why you wanted me to come with. I'll buy you something to eat. Sound fair?" He slipped his hands into his pockets as he waited for her to answer.

”Yeah, now is not the time to answer all those questions. I have a time limit on this little frog. And…food sounds nice, thank you.” She accepted the hand up, dusting her skirt off before she took the lead, headed towards the back door of a tall, dirty white building. ”Carter’s my boss. It’s best not to question him too much, though if his damned underlings try to just take my sketchbook again…” She trailed off, scowling at her boots. ”They don’t trust me with paper that much; I set off a wolf on them last summer.”
She started smiling at the memory and was still grinning as she tugged on the door, pulling it open after a moment. A tall man stared down at the harbringers, reluctantly moving to one side to let the pair in. ”Hold it you. Boss said you’re not allowed to take any paper or chalk inside. Empty your pockets. He looked the redhead over again, trying to guess what his power might be.
”Fine. But if I’m missing any pages, it’s your neck.” Marjorie pulled her sketchbook out, handing it over reluctantly. The man nodded, flipping through the pages. ”Watch your greasy fingers,” she warned before motioning for Andrew to follow, pulling out the package as well, wrapped in brown paper and otherwise unmarked.

Re: The Vagabonds [Andrew][Marjorie]

Post by Andrew on Thu Jan 17, 2013 7:01 pm

Andrew laughed softly at the visual of a wolf appearing in the middle of a shitty warehouse - which, how cliche was that? He didn't know where Oblivion or Silver Dust kept their primary headquarters, but he was willing to bet that they weren't so stupid. And this guy was really playing at being bigger than he really was, wasn't he? The red head wondered if Oblivion even knew about him. Probably not or he wasn't likely to still be here, not working on his own anyway.

He eyed the guy at the door as well, normal smile gone considering the situation, and just raised an eyebrow. Once they were through the door and it had swung closed behind them, Andrew shook his head. "Not too smart, are they?" he muttered. That idiot hadn't even thought to ask Andrew any questions or frisk him or even look into his bag. And she had just walked in with a paper-wrapped box. If she wasn't supposed to have paper, then what the hell was he thinking? Moron, those were some pretty amateur mistakes.

He reached into his bag and pulled out one of the high quality grease pencils that his cousin had given him for Christmas, figuring that it'd be more widely usable than one of the sketching pencils, and nudged Marjorie's arm, passing it to her. "Keep it in your pocket for now, just as a precaution. You can give it back later."

She looked at the grease pencil before taking it, pocketing it quickly. “Thanks. I might come in handy.” She walked quickly down the hall, looking down at the package. “And thanks for coming. I didn’t have to twist your arm though, did I?” She smiled up at him, feeling more comfortable with the relative stranger.
The room they were headed to, and soon entered, was narrow, thanks in part to the wide table full of stuff – clothes, paper, credits, some more questionable stuff – and people walking to and fro. There were several different entranceways that they would come in and out of. Marjorie tried to set the package down and leave (she had been paid in advance), but someone else entered and caught sight of her.
Carter was a short, beefy man. His chins had chins. In a startling contrast, his voice was fairly high-pitched, like it had never gone through puberty.
“Marge! There you are! We were beginning to get worried you had been picked up by the cops. Give me that package now.”
Marjorie mumbled a greeting, looking smaller and quieter than she had been just a few minutes ago. Instead of leaving it on the table, she carried it over to the man, staring at his stained shirt instead of his face, even though they were nearly eye level. He took the package before slapping her.

“Don’t you dare be late again. And who is this boy?”
the man demanded, jabbing a pudgy finger in Andrew’s direction.

Andrew flashed her a quick smile and reached out to ruffle her hair. "Nah, you're fine." He was tempted to call her shorty, but was willing to bet that she'd react similarly to Ceara and hit him for it. He slipped his hand into his jacket pocket again, keeping his arms and shoulders loose. If anything happened, he was here without backup and no one knew where he was. Which, yeah, that was smart of him. He was kind of banking on the fact that even the smaller gangs didn't dare break the 'no jobs during the day' rule because that would endanger all of them and piss off the bigger fish.

In the main room, he just kind of shook his head. So many things out in the open like this - either this guy Carter was confident or stupid. And if he had this many people, then stupid wasn't really the answer. And he couldn't help the momentary frown at seeing the guy, but he wiped it away, not wanting to be seen as anything other than someone who was just there.

But when Marjorie got slapped? That made it hard for him to keep quiet, needing to bite his tongue to do so. And he did not like how she was acting around this guy, but he'd admit he didn't know her too well so she could normally be like this. It still didn't sit right with him though.

Setting his hand on Marjorie's shoulder, he gave a pleasant smile. "Vertigo," was all he said, staring at Carter with the customary warmth in his eyes completely gone.

Marjorie jumped and looked up at him, confused. “I thought you said your name was…” she drifted off, blushing at her mistake. She looked down at her feet instead, touching her cheek gingerly but briefly.
“Vertigo. Were your parents drunk when they named you?”
Carter grunted a bit as he looked the box over carefully, setting it aside. “Hey, clean this shit up now,” he barked over his shoulder at a retreating back. The man just disappeared around a corner. “Worthless little…” He turned back around, glowering a bit. “Marge.”
“Yes sir?”
She looked up again, fiddling with her hoodie’s sleeve.
“If you’re late again you know what’ll happen. And don’t forget about later this week.”
She nodded, still fiddling.
“I won’t be late again. Can I go now?”
she asked, sounding insistent. Carter reached out, making her wince, but he only ruffled her hair.
“Just don’t be late again. Ruth’ll be waiting for you around the front.”
Marjorie nodded, grabbing Andrew’s arm and pulling him back out quickly. Once they were out of sight, she took a deep breath, relaxing. “Sorry I froze. He really hates getting his stuff late.” She rubbed her cheek, where it was still reddish. “Why did you say your name was Vertigo?” she whispered, still holding onto his jacket so she could stand up on her toes. She wobbled a bit and quickly shook her sleeve out. The ink frog fell and splattered, no longer a construct. “Time was up.”

Was this guy serious? Okay, maybe stupid was still on the table. He couldn't recognize an alias when he heard one? So many people had them and most of them were gang members. He hid his incredulity and instead his eyes narrowed at how Marjorie was reacting. He didn't like that, but there was no guarantee that they'd even meet again after today so he'd keep quiet for now. A lot of people joined gangs for protection so he'd assume that was why she was here.

But with her power? Any of the big three would be happy to have her. Maybe he should mention it to her? Well, she asked so he may as well.

Andrew put an arm around around Marjorie, helping her walk. "Because I'm not about to give some idiot who thinks he's more important than he is my real name." He glanced at her. "Plus, it's just smart to have an alias when you're a part of a gang." He started to guide her down the street, remembering that a good cafe that wasn't too expensive was nearby.

The door guard gave her sketchbook back without any trouble, and she flipped through it quickly, giving Andrew flashes of other constructs waiting to be called, graffiti ideas (some that he could find all over East District), as well as more traditional stuff. She tucked it away, clinging again to his arm as they left. She tugged her hood over her head, shielding her eyes. “My restitution is pretty annoying,” she said, attempting to laugh. “It’s like I’m having my period but ten times worse.” She wasn’t paying attention, pressing closer to Andrew when they reached the street again, watching their feet. “So you’re in a gang? Like a real one, not the stupid one Carter think he has.” She was a lot happier outside of the warehouse, package gone, absolutely full of questions. “And you’re an artist too? Oh, your pencil, here.” She dug into her pocket, pulling it back out to hand to him. Meaning, sticking it out awkwardly in front of him while her eyes were half closed. “I’m glad I didn’t have to make anything else. Bit tired from last time still, actually.”

Andrew laughed softly at her comment about her restitution. "I have yet to find a harbinger that enjoys their restitution. My cousin is a harbinger as well - she gets headaches and nausea from hers. I know someone else who whistles. Haven't seen him in a while though." He kind of wondered where Hoss had disappeared to. Heck, for that matter, he wondered how Kota and Trevor had been since that entire Halloween cluster fuck.

He nodded in answer to her question about the gang, accepting his pencil back and putting it in his bag again. "Yes, I am." He glanced at her then sighed. "I'm potentially being stupid going out on a limb here and telling you this, so I'm trusting you not to say anything, okay?" Andrew absently realized that he seemed to give people these little tests of trust, and considering the number of times he had been turned on, he didn't really care. He wasn't going to say which gang though. So long as she wasn't in said gang, he shouldn't. If she found out though, or wanted to join, that was something else.

“Course I won’t tell. Who’d I tell anyway?” She scoffed a bit at the thought, tightening her grip on his arm as her head started throbbing, “Are we going somewhere darkish?” she asked, wishing she had something so simple as whistling. She tried to ignore it, thinking about the Big Three gangs in the city. Oblivion was in her district, she knew, but she couldn’t remember who was in the South. She knew to just enough to not want to get in the way. Before Carter though, she had wondered if they’d like someone like her and had worked hard at her limits, up to the half hour she had now. But now she worked for Carter, and she ought to be thankful, she reminded herself harshly.
“We’re going to eat right?”
she asked as they kept walking. She really wanted to know if he had ever killed someone, thinking his hair color could’ve been stolen from a drop of blood. But she also really didn’t want to know, and shoved those thoughts into the dark corners of her mind to deal with later. She had an idea for a new mural though, something to work on and maybe tag in this very district. She braved the light to peek up at him. Andrew really didn’t look like a killer. Not to her, anyway. He was being far too nice to her to kill.

Re: The Vagabonds [Andrew][Marjorie]

Andrew grinned and gently nudged her side with his hip. "Oh, I don't know. You could be one of those 'goody-goodies' I've been hearing so much about," he teased, laughing at her initial reaction. "And kind of? There's a back corner that isn't too bright. Would that work for you?"

Why would she ask him if they were going to eat? He had said that he'd buy her some food. "Yeah. What else would we be doing?" He paused to think then looked down at her again, eyes wide. She didn't think... did she? "Wait wait wait a minute. You don't think that I'm going to make you have sex with me, do you?" He looked horrified at the thought. He had been through it himself so there was no way that he'd force someone else to do the same thing.

Andrew shook his head emphatically. "Not going to happen. I told you that I'd get you some food and that's what I'm going to do, nothing else," he said firmly. Even if she asked him to he wouldn't, because that would kind of just reinforce the thought in her mind.

She blushed and looked down, gut clenching like she wanted to throw up. Her stomach gurgled in protest, reminding her that she hadn’t eaten since lunch yesterday. “No! Oh my god, ew…it wasn’t that at all, but thanks for that lovely little mental image. It’s just usually people don’t…go through with stuff they say.” She frowned a bit, obviously thinking about something. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you. I-I…it’s been awhile since someone besides Carter and his people have talked to me. As in, basically my whole life.” She nudged him back carefully, though her hip was more level with his thigh, still blushing but smiling up at him, thinking if she had offended him, he probably would’ve run off already. And since he hadn’t and was giving her food…was she making a new friend? A friend in a gang, but they only did that stuff at night, right? She pushed her glasses back up her nose, looking up briefly. They were already at the café, she realized, stopping quickly. “What if they don’t serve harbringers?” she asked softly, not knowing he’d been there before.
