Fye rose early in the mornings. He had to, if he wanted to get everything baked for the day--he was more than used to rising when the stars were still in the sky, firing up the ovens in a blaze of breath and going upstairs to shower and have a smoke in the spare room--sitting at the computer, the window cracked open, scanning the Bulletin, before going back downstairs, hair still wet, to start on the loaves.

It was Saturday: rye and wheat to start, the rye dough pungent under his hands, set aside to rise in batches, then starting on the dough for the sweet, Asiatic bread--chopping and frying the bacon for the savory buns, keeping the grease for the chives, setting aside the mix to fill rolls later, punching down the dough and letting it rise again.

Berries in sugar over the stove for a simple sauce, making the start of the pie filling, then putting the loaves in the oven to bake--rolling out the pie dough as the pie filling simmered, lining two pans and then ladling in the mixture, topping it off with fresh berries, and laying the cover over them both--

Custard then, filling both the sweet and savory buns, taking out the loaves to cool, setting in the sheets of rolls, and then turning back to the kitchen to start on the chocolate cakes for the day, the last thing he baked for the morning; they and the pies would bake at the same time, and then he could bank the fires and tidy up for opening.

Nearly ten years now, doing this every Saturday; it was a comforting habit, this routine, being able to sit back as the last of the sweets baked, slowly sipping a cup of coffee, everything else arranged, watching the sun rise. People would start walking past soon, his regulars would filter in, seeking their usuals, and maybe today he'd get some new people, attracted by the scent of chocolate cake and blackberry pie wafting out into the street.

His kitchen timer tinged, and he rose to put the finishing touches on the first cake and pie of the day, raw sugar sprinkled over the surface of the pie while it was still hot, layering the chocolate cake and frosting it in whorls and roses as he hummed to himself (his ancient radio, one of the first things he'd bought for himself when he was still at Hope Orphanage, playing quietly in the background, loud enough to be a quiet presence through the entire bakery), then transporting both to their glass display cases, stepping out from behind the counter to unlock the door and flip his sign to 'Open', before settling back in his usual spot, another cup of coffee in-hand.

Leon cruised through the street, mauve-dyed hair whipping about his face. The extra little breeze was nice--especially today, when the sun was bright and pulsating without a cloud in the gray-blue sky. He took a second to glance down at the little note of paper clutched in his fingers, for the umpteenth time that hour.

(not that it helped--he'd taken the wrong subway train at first off to the South District by accident and then, when he'd finally found his way to the West District, he'd taken the wrong corner out of the station; he would've given up long ago except that this was a bakery, and Leon did not ever give up on finding his way to a bakery--)

A car honked behind him. Leon swerved out of the way, and blew a raspberry as it swooshed past--

--taking the little slip of paper with it.

With an alarmed yelp Leon lurched forward and snatched the address before the ensuing wind could blow it away.
"Okay," he said, glancing around, then leaning in to glower at it. "Okay okay okay. I need you. Please don't run off like that."

He stuffed the note into his pocket (for extra insurance), then stopped.

Oh. That smells good...

Like a bloodhound, he followed the scent, right up to a window of showcased baked goods. The Emberwheat Bakery. This was it. He kicked up his skateboard and pressed his face to the glass.

ohmygodisthatchocolatecakeWAIT--

IS THAT BLACKBERRY PIE

BLACKBERRY PIE

Leon hurtled through door.

It had only been a few hours, Fye steadily going through requests and ringing up orders with that unhurried, groundeating pace that he'd gained over the years of working, immersed in the tranquility of a Saturday morning, when his door slammed open with all the force that an enthusiastic teenager could manage, said teen bowling through it and into the main floor of the shop.

Fye raised a single eyebrow at the entry, echoing the surprise of the few other patrons in the shop at that moment and his only expression of emotion at the moment, and then calmly turned back to the lady in front of the register (who was turned almost all the way around, looking at the mauve-haired teen), replying,
"One dollar and twenty-five cents" to her order of a slice of his chocolate cake in a to-go box, catching her attention again (she paid with a blush coloring her face, obviously flustered at being caught off guard, and Fye gave her a thin smile of reassurance as she fumbled out the cash and hurried away) before turning his attention to his newest customer.

"Yes?"

Leon didn't even notice the girl scurrying past him, rushing up to the counter and colliding into it with a sharp "OOF."

"That," he said, after he caught his breath, beaming with enough force to power five neighborhoods in the South District and and maybe a little house after that--he pointed to the beautiful, luscious, golden-glazed plate of heaven sitting proudly in its display case. "I'll take a slice of the blackberry pie please. Actually, no. I'll have an entire pie--"

There weren't any bakeries in the North District that sold blackberry pies. Leon wasn't going to let this opportunity slip away. Never.

"--and if you have one that's extra blackberry-y that'd be awesome thanks!"

A slight flinch as the young man collided with the counter in his enthusiasm, then Fye waited for the teen to catch his breath around his excitement, eventually gathering enough of himself to jab a finger at his display case--the blond followed the line of his regard, turning his head to consider one of the blackberry pies he'd baked that morning, this one with one or two slices out of it, enough to show the rich interior. Ah.

"I'll take a slice of the blackberry pie please. Actually, no. I'll have an entire pie--and if you have one that's extra blackberry-y that'd be awesome thanks!"

Fye snorted, turning his eyes back to the kid, looking him up and down--nice skateboard, not too ragged, probably not from the South District, then (kids there didn't usually have enough money to make it to the West side and manage to purchase an entire blackberry pie and then be able to make it back). He nodded, unfolding his arms and straightening from his counter that he'd been leaning on, and simply said, "Alright."

So saying, he disappeared through the door behind the counter into the kitchen with one more lingering glance at the patrons outside--he didn't usually have a problem with people stealing, but better safe than sorry--and stopped in front of several lumps covered with a white cloth sitting on his counter. Picking up the edge of the fabric, he considered the remaining pies, and then selected one of them--this had been the last one he'd baked, meaning it had a little more filling in it than the others did.

Sliding back out into the shop proper, Fye brought the pie over to the counter, setting it down in front of the teen for his consideration.
"This do?"

Leon's fingers tightened around the edge of the counter, his face split into a grin that wouldn't quit. A blackberry pie! A blackberry pie. He hadn't had one in ages. The last time his mother made one was at the very least three years ago (okay, well, admittedly Leon was a little at fault for that, he hadn't known she was saving it for a fancy little dinner party that night, HONEST--okay not so honest, Leon had totally known and he had no regrets whatsoever for finishing that sexy, monstrous thing--except for the part where she didn't make pie ever again in his presence but WELP--)

His thought process immediately cut itself off the moment the man returned, a gorgeously fat pie in his hands.

Leon gave the pie a reverent look, then glanced back up at the man.
"I could kiss you right now," he proclaimed, as he began rummaging through his plentiful number of pockets. "You. Are. Awesome."

Keys, watch, rubber ball, a minature deck of cards... He set the items down on the countertop one by one as he felt around. Gum. Earphones. Aha! Wallet.

"How much?"

He snorted at the teen's proclamation and enthusiasm--must have been a while since he'd had blackberry pie or something--and replied, "Twelve credits" to his query, amused. After a moment, watching him empty his pockets of several small objects, scattering them across his countertop, eventually coming up with a wallet, when it became obvious that he actually did intend to buy the entire thing, and probably eat the entire thing as well, Fye added, "Don't get sick" as he accepted the mauve-haired customer's money and rang him up, the ancient cash register clattering, tearing off the paper receipt as the machine finished processing and handing it to the teen.
