Goddamnit, cell phone.

Where was he, even? Not physically -- heck no. Sure, wandering around aimlessly with no clue as to your position was alright (at best) during the day, but at night that was a whole different story. You were pretty much asking to be robbed, assaulted or worse if you found yourself still unsure of where you were at lights out. Trace absently wondered how many people exactly had met their ends like that. Probably lots, given the rate of gang crimes in the South District. No one would even go looking there. And even if they did, it wouldn't make a difference. In the South District, it was survival of the fittest in those situations.

What a horrible way to die.

...Okay. So not the time to be thinking of things like that. Wow. Way to go. He had probably been in the midst of discovering the final secret to unlocking the cure for cancer, or for ending world hunger, or the secret to infinite knowledge -- but nope! -- not if his phone had anything to say about it. And now all that potential knowledge was gone from the world, and the worst part of it was that he wasn't even sure what it was that he'd forgotten. That was always the most aggravating feeling. That nagging sensation of 'I was just thinking something important. But what?'

Look what that Johnathon Cash fellow did. He'd have to go find him and give him a nice stern apology to all those out there who could have been helped if he wasn't so busy stuffing his pockets with other people's stuff. Or at least if he'd been a semi-competent thief who knew not to get caught. Jeez.

Wait.

Johnathon Cash.

Mid-twenties, four counts of attempted robbery?

As in, the guy who broke into SynapTech the other day without so much as touching a single sheet of paper on the reception desk? Or, at least, that's what the official report given by his uncle said. Off the record, there was the one briefcase he'd been carrying with him, but that couldn't just be reported missing, because of (presumably) what was inside. Though, whatever it was, it was pretty damn important if his uncle had gone through such great lengths to keep it safe and in his possession (though, one could argue that apparently it wasn't safe enough).

Yeah. That was him all right.

There goes the rest of my night, he thought as he pivoted on his heel and dashed off in the other direction.

Okay, so why were there so many brown haired, blue eyed men in the world? Marjorie huffed to herself, pulling up her hood thanks to the cold. The huff, of course, came out in a white puff and she entertained herself for a few minutes like that.
It didn’t help that she had been skipping visiting her friend Riley to find this jerk. A non-harbinger thief? For one hundred credits? That seemed so easy, even a fifteen year old could do it. Nevermind a fifteen year old who could create her own minions out of ink.
But, again, did she have to pick possibly the most common looking man in the existence of history? She had been wondering about West District all day and was even skipping out on Carter’s client of the night because one hundred credits sure beat out twenty.
She was beginning to give up and debating to surprise Riley with a late night visit when she caught sight of another wanderer. It was too dark to really tell, but the figure was vaguely male-shaped and, eh, close enough. She pulled out her sketchbook, flipping open to a blank page.

“Hey, dumbass, got a bounty on your head?”
The small dog she summoned ran out to tackle the figure because honestly, she was grouchy and would take any credits offered.

"Hey, dumbass--"

That was all Trace heard. Or more accurately, it was all that he listened to. He ignored the rest of the sentence, not caring whether this was a misunderstanding or if whoever just called him that was just an idiot. Those were some strong words to be thrown around at this time of night, to some random stranger who you'd never even met. So he leaned more towards the second. If he was one to get pissed off real fast, maybe she'd be in some trouble right now. But he was pretty chill so--

Then a little growling dog of all things leaped out at him from the shadows, catching him completely off guard.

He was forced to jump back further into the protective circle of light, swinging the rod a little unsteadily at the thing--

He stumbled to the side as his rod went completely through the creature, suddenly nowhere to be seen. But as he looked down at the tip of his weapon, and at the ground under it, his eyes narrowed. Black stains, almost everywhere.

Is that... ink?

A harbinger, then.

And a darn lucky one, too. Lucky that it didn't get on his clothes, or there'd have been some real problems.

And, now that he thought about it, sending your little ink pet at some random stranger this late at night was just downright unconscionable!

"Maybe you should wait for your victims to answer before you sic your weird little pets on them, girl."

She walked up at him, taking a closer look even as her restitution kicked in, making her head throb. It wasn’t too bad considering it had been a small construct and only active for a few minutes. She finally noticed the color of this guy’s hair, sighing heavily. “You don’t look anything like him in the light.” She kept staring at him, crossing her arms protectively over her sketchbook. “What are you doing wandering around the suburbs at night anyway? Don’t you know how dangerous it is?” Well obviously he did; he carried around a rod…staff…thing. She ignored that though, looking at her phone again. “You’re not even the right height; how could I be so stupid?” Shaking her head slightly, she flipped the phone shut and pocketed it, giving the boy a suspicious look. “Who are you?” Another bounty hunter maybe? Why else would he be wandering around the suburbs at night (like her), with a weapon (okay, less like her as she really only had her ink constructs for protection, but similar enough)?

Trace was ready to extend his staff back to full (bō) length and fight any other creatures that got sent his way (if that was how it works). Then there was the potential threat of the creature reanimating itself from the ground (and his staff too, no?). He was hoping that wasn’t the case, or else he’d have a bit of a sticky situation on his hands. Literally.

But then, he really did have an advantage in that his power hadn’t been revealed and all. And if chemistry was on his side (and he was really hoping it was), he had another advantage: ink’s miscibility in water. If he could splatter that little dog at just tanbō length, using water to the same effect would be a breeze.
Except she just walked up to him. And started talking at length. Casually, even. To herself it sounded like, because she never even stopped once to wait for him to answer. He was really confused. One moment she was attacking him and now it was like it’d never happened.

“Rude. And from the looks of things, you should be the one being careful, not me.”

Whoops. So much for answering her question.

Rude? Okay, maybe a little. She did attack him after all. But she was perfectly capable of taking care of herself! She stopped moving, chin tucked down slightly in an attempt to shield her eyes. At the very least, her body wasn’t trying to sink into the earth (the usual feeling she got from body fatigue. She usually just wanted to curl up and go to sleep after using her power because she felt so heavy and tired, nevermind the headache). “Sorry,” she said a bit grumpily, crossing her arms tight against her body. “I’ve been looking for someone all day. A bit taller than you, brown hair. He’s supposed to be in this district, somewhere in the suburbs. Supposedly.” She was more than a bit grumpy after a hopeful morning start. What happened if this guy she was looking for left the district? Would her phone go off with the update? She highly doubted it.
It took a few minutes for her to realize she had gotten within smacking distance of that staff he was holding and she took a few quick, cautious steps back.

Trace smirked. This girl sure had an interesting way of showing how sorry she was -- namely assuming that stance and sounding irritable, like she was the one who was wronged. But it wasn't like he cared about anything as stupid as an apology, especially from a stranger at this time of night. What he really expected from strangers at this time were other, less positive things. You know, attempted assault and battery, manslaughter, arson. The works.

"It's not a problem."

Well, for what it was worth, she did seem to be fairly capable of handling herself, if she was a little hasty.

"Oh."

Slightly taller and brown hair, huh? Trace chuckled to himself at the thought of her mistaking him for the bounty target she was after. As if he'd be out gallivanting around the district where there might be gang members hiding in the shadows and vigilantes (like this poor, misguided girl) out patrolling for the likes of him. He had to give her points for trying. The girl was nothing if not eager, and she deserved something for that, even if it wasn't exactly a good thing to bring into an impending fight.

"If you're looking for a Mr. Cash, then I'm afraid you're sadly mistaken in looking this way."

He flashed a small smile and walked right on past her, shaking his head slightly as she realized in retrospect that she was still in range of his staff. If only she knew that those few steps wouldn't do her any good against my bō. But then, that was the unfortunate downside to being uninformed. You just couldn't help it.

Okay, this guy was given off a very distinct vibe that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. And even if he didn’t sound like it, she knew he was probably laughing at her. Which pissed her off. Why was it okay for everyone to laugh at her? She tried to be nice and not do the same!
Oh and of course the mention of her bounty’s name just added to her anger. She slipped her hand into a pocket of her skirt, withdrawing her knife, and ran forward, cutting off the guy’s path, knife held pointing to his chest. She had to do this right if she wanted to save money and eventually get away from Carter. And she had to do that so she no longer felt guilty keeping secrets.

“What do you know about Cash? Tell me and I won’t hurt you.” Shit, her voice was starting to shake. She was tired. She just wanted to crawl into bed and sleep away the night. But she needed the money. She wasn’t watching his staff, totally focused on his face, her temper giving her tunnel vision.

If there was one thing Trace had to admit, it was that this girl was tenacious. Tenacious as hell. It hadn't even been a full ten seconds -- maybe even a mere five -- and she'd already put herself in his way once again. No doubt to release another set of hot words from her oversentimental--

Then he saw the knife.

To say he was surprised was an understatement. It wasn't everyday that he had a knife pointed at his chest (which in itself was kind of surprising, given the amount of crap that he gave certain people). But of all the people to stick it to him -- No time for puns, he reminded himself -- she would be the last on his list. To be fair, he really underestimated her. Not in the literal sense, though. Sure he realized she could pose a threat with her power and all, but he didn't seriously think about her going after Cash. It was just not an image he could conjure.

He raised his eyebrows a little, noting how her eyes were deadlocked on his face, unfaltering and definitely not watching his hands, or by extension, the weapon he was holding. Somewhat excusable if there was a larger distance between them (as she'd be able to use her peripheral vision to detect his movements), but at this range he wouldn't even need to extend the staff to be able to hit her. Which is a thing he'd want to avoid if possible for reasons, but. There were times when that kind of thing was inevitable. Like now.

He swung his tanbō fast -- but not too hard -- right at the junction of her wrist and hand, in order to help loosen her grip on the knife, stepping in quickly and moving to sweep her legs out from under her.

"I don't think so."

Ouch. She dropped her knife in surprise and then fell on her back with a grunt. No time to lie down though. She pushed herself into a crouch, glaring at the guy with a sense of hatred – all she wanted to fucking do was find a fucking guy and turn him in to get the fucking bounty so she could buy her freedom. And he was being a pain in the ass.
Instead of tackling him like she wanted, she crabwalked a bit further away, drawing her sketchbook again. One bit of the thumb and a large frog was escaping the page, come to life thanks to her blood. It leaped towards Marjorie’s opponent and she followed suit, scooping up her knife with her other hand, hoping between the frog and her own body weight to knock the guy down and pin him.
“You could make this a lot easier on us both you know!”

Okay, maybe that was a bit of an overreaction. Though in all fairness the girl had it coming, walking around at night, sending her things out after him, and now pulling a knife on him. He wasn't particularly vengeful, but if he was some other stranger walking around at this time of night he could take some very serious offense to her words and actions and actually try and fight her for real.

Now that was a scary thought.

He had it coming, losing focus for a bit as he thought of the horrible situations she could get herself into with that mouth and temper of hers, though the irony value was impeccable.

The next thing he knew, he was on the ground--Goddamnit, I just got this hoodie cleaned--with the girl over him.

It was at this point that he started losing patience.

He smiled back coldly, the position seven different levels of uncomfortable.

"And you could too if you could keep your hands to yourself and your voice down. Or maybe you want some thug to hack you into little pieces because you don't know how to control your temper."

She growled at him quietly, sending the frog to sit on his face and suffocate him as she shifted her position to sit on his stomach, knife at his throat, boots pinning his wrists down. If he didn’t have her frog on his face he’d be getting an excellent view up her skirt (though she wore sliding shorts underneath now). “I can control my temper quite well thanks, but you’re annoying and I don’t feel up to chatting or kissing up to your dick. Now tell me what I want to know or I’ll send some tadpoles down your throat.” She let the frog up just enough for him to breathe and talk, tracing his Adam’s apple with the tip of her blade.

Being a forced whore meant she didn’t really notice the compromising position anymore, not thinking for an instant that the boy she was trying to get information from might be uncomfortable. She really just wanted to go back to bed.

Now it looked like she was really mad, if the whole sitting on his stomach, pinning his wrists, and suffocating him while simultaneously holding a knife to his throat thing said anything about her emotional state, which he would wager it did. He held his breath. Being a swimmer helped a lot, but he could only hold his breath for so long before he passed out.

Luckily it seemed that she only wanted him quiet so she could hear herself talk.

Now, being able to breathe again, he could think about what he needed to do to get her off of him. He was getting pretty close to being done playing with her. He didn't want to hurt her, but the time for keeping the gloves on was quickly coming to an end. If he needed to do some damage, he would do some damage if it got him what he wanted--which was at this point to get the damn girl off of him.

With his wrists trapped as they were, his staff wasn't a viable option. However, he had his water bottles on him. Most of them were trapped under him at this point, but he always had one or two in his hoodie or cargo short pockets. Which would place them firmly behind the girl and out of her peripheral vision, even if she was paying attention the them, which he would wager she wasn't. Not with the anger he could hear in her voice. A plan began to form in his head.

"I hope you realize that, in addition to threatening me with bodily harm, physical assault abetted by harbinger powers is a violation of the first and six tenets of the law. If you don't want to go to jail when I'm not where I'm supposed to be in 20 minutes and they track my cell phone, I'd suggest you kindly step the hell off."

A bluff, but it didn't matter at all. Whether or not she called you out on it, you were almost ready.
