Aid of a Different Sort -- Ceara, Lisa ((complete)) Empty Aid of a Different Sort -- Ceara, Lisa ((complete))

It was starting to cool, the sun was starting to dip behind the city's buildings, and Lisa had still been out tending to some of her homeless patients. She had just finished and was on her way home, content and debating if she wanted to cook for herself or just pick up something so she could relax and not need to worry about it.

She had just decided on stopping somewhere when she felt a hand clamp onto her shoulder and turn the blonde to slam her against a wall. Letting out a soft cry of surprise, Lisa flinched when the front of her coat was grabbed and she was yanked forward.

"Hey doc. How you been?" the man holding her snarled before his free hand flashed up and slapped her. While she was dazed from the harsh blow, he forced her into a nearby alley and shoved her against another wall. "Fuckin' bitch. On your damn high horse. Bet you love lookin' down on us an' laughin' about how much better you got it than us. I hate rich bitches like you. An' I'm gonna show you just how much I hate it."

Lisa blinked a few times, wondering what he was talking about, before her eyes widened and she ducked, the pipe in his hand hitting the bricks with loud impact. It knocked a chunk out of one and he kicked out at her.

"Hold still!"

"No! Help!"

Although the grocery bags were digging uncomfortably into her gloved fingers, Ceara smiled. It was good that they were heavy. Because then she knew they had enough food for the both of them to last a few weeks. Usually it was her friend’s job to deal with the grocery shopping, but Tal had been exhausted from the past few days and the younger girl just wanted to take some of the load off her shoulders. She still had a lot of money left from the purse, maybe she should get her friend a gift-

“Hold still!”

“No! Help!”

The girl frowned, pausing and peering into the alley the voices had come from, pulling back when she caught sight of the figures. What the hell? She hadn’t seen what caused whatever this was, but attacking someone who was obviously weaker than you? This man either was very stupid or had balls for doing it in a relatively open place, especially when night hadn’t fallen completely yet. Ceara slowly set her bags on the ground before slipping into the alley, stepping quietly behind the man. “Hey!” He turned in surprise at her voice and she took the advantage, wresting the pipe out of his hand and slamming it into his thigh. The much smaller girl moved around him when he fell to his knees, placing herself in between the woman and him and pointing the pipe at his head. “Go. I’ll break something next time.” And it wasn't an idle threat, if he didn't move soon she would only get more pissed.

The man grumbled but he backed away, a little quicker when he saw those violet eyes glaring at him. He looked at Lisa, huddled on the ground behind Ceara as she was, and snarled.

"Be seein' you around, doc. We'll hafta finish our 'conversation' later." He snorted then spat at Ceara's feet before turning and walking away.

When he was gone, Lisa carefully got to her feet and turned toward Ceara, studying the shorter female. Her hair was pretty and certainly not natural, but that was nothing new around the city. "Thank you, for stepping in. I'm... I'm sure that he was going to kill me if you hadn't stepped in." She offered a soft smile, relaxing some since the harbinger didn't seem to be hostile toward her. The doctor held herself ready to run if that changed. He had taken her by surprise and hopefully it wouldn't happen again. "Is there anything I can do to thank you?" She could deal with owing a favor, so long as it pertained to her medical training, otherwise she was fine with giving the younger woman some credits as thanks.

Stepping out of the way when he spat, Ceara let out a small huff of derision when he turned and walked away. The man might’ve been acting all tough, but she knew how much her successful intervention had bruised his (fragile) ego. She shrugged and turned around, meeting the older woman’s eyes.

"Thank you, for stepping in. I'm... I'm sure that he was going to kill me if you hadn't stepped in."

She titled her head at the woman’s words, wondering what the blonde could’ve done that was so bad it warranted her death. She seemed pleasant enough. The man definitely knew her though, if the way he had spat out the word ‘doc’ like it was poison meant anything. So it wasn’t just some crazy guy attacking her. Ceara shook her head at both the thanks and the offer. “It’s fine. Are you alright, though?” Hopefully she stopped the man in time before he hurt her. “You can repay me by telling me why he apparently wanted to kill you, I guess?” She glanced back towards the opening of the alley and held up a finger to ask the woman to wait, before fetching her bags and returning.

"Yes, I'm fine. Thank you," Lisa answered, repeating her thanks again. She blinked and watched the younger woman retrieve her bags. Speaking of... The blond glanced around, wondering where her own bag had gone. Spotting it near the wall where it must have landed when he was jerking her around, she walked over to pick it up and settle it on her shoulder again.

Shrugging lightly, she glanced nervously at the direction he had gone. "From what he said, he's not happy with my volunteering and providing free medical attention to the impoverished. I don't know why, unless someone he knew died while I was tending to someone else. Or, he's part of one of those myriad scam clinics that are scattered around, particularly here in the south." She offered a soft smile. "It's unfortunate how greedy some people are."

She shifted her grip on her bag, freeing one hand to offer to shake as her smile strengthened. She clearly didn't care that the girl who had saved her was a harbinger, having no hesitation to offer her hand now that she had decided the other female wasn't a threat to her. "I'm Lisa, or more commonly on the streets, Doc Rhodes."

She snorted softly. Someone attacked this woman because she volunteered? That was the first time Ceara heard of someone wanting to hurt another because they helped people too much. And if he was part of those scam clinics, then… The girl huffed. She wasn’t a saint by any means, but ripping off people who already had next to nothing was just abnormally cruel.

“I’m Lisa, or more commonly on the streets, Doc Rhodes?”

Ceara’s eyes widened before she reached out and shook the woman’s hand. The Doc Rhodes? The one Andrew’s friend apparently wouldn’t stop following around like a puppy? She had heard a lot of things about the woman before, but had never had the chance to actually meet her. Ceara wasn’t a saint, but Lisa definitely was. “Ceara.” If her reputation was anything to go by, then it was safe to tell her her real name. And it seemed fair enough to do so. “I’ve heard a lot about you. It’s nice to meet you.” Now that she knew who this woman was, it really seemed ridiculous that she was attacked.

Lisa smiled, shaking Ceara's hand. "Your name is pretty," she commented softly. "It's nice to meet you too. If you ever need some help, please feel free to come to me. If I can't help you, I can get in contact with someone who can." Yes, the girl was decently dressed for south and had plenty of groceries with her, but it was only polite to offer and it was the least she could do.

She tilted her head a little, studying Ceara's facial features. "This may seem to be an odd question, but are you by any chance related to Andrew? He's got red hair and bright green eyes. I only ask because you have some similar facial features to him." She smiled fondly in remembrance and her smile widened at the confirmation. "I hope you don't get into as much trouble as he does. I've patched that boy up so many times..." She laughed lightly.

Lisa cast a wary look around the street when they stepped onto it again. When she saw that it was clear, she turned toward Ceara again. "Could I buy you dinner as thanks?"

Ceara smiled as well, her corner of her lip twisting up a little. “I’ll keep that in mind, thanks.” She doubted she’d need to ever ask for the woman’s help, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a doctor willing to help.

"This may seem to be an odd question, but are you by any chance related to Andrew? He's got red hair and bright green eyes. I only ask because you have some similar facial features to him."

She lifted an eyebrow and nodded slowly. “He’s my cousin.” She actually shouldn’t be surprised that Lisa knew her cousin; he had been on the streets for a while and was bound to bump into the woman eventually. She laughed out loud when the older woman mentioned patching him up. Ceara imagined that he got into a lot of trouble before she knew him. Not all of the mischievous type, but that was something off topic and she would rather not speak of it to a stranger, no matter how nice she appeared. “Actually, I’m pretty sure that we get into more trouble when we’re together.”

She followed Lisa out into the street, nodding slightly at her offer. “Sure, that sounds great. Would you mind if I drop these off first, though?” She lifted her bags a little bit. “I only live two blocks away.”

Lisa smiled again, listening to Ceara laugh. The happy sound was always something nice to hear. "No, not at all, that's fine." She would offer to help carry the bags, but she was rather certain that she would be declined. Instead, she walked at Ceara's side.

"Dare I ask how you could possibly get into more trouble than he already did?" she asked while they were still going to Ceara's building. She was thinking of how she had needed to tend to him several times in the past few months. "By the way, how are his shoulder, ribs, and knee healing?" she asked, not knowing that Andrew hadn't even mentioned that particular incident to Ceara.

After the younger woman's groceries had been dropped off, Lisa smiled lightly at the harbinger. "Do you have any preferences on what we get or would rather we not go to?" For that matter, was there anything that the doctor didn't particularly want to eat? No, not really. Though she did have a taste for Chinese, but she could get that tomorrow instead.

She smirked and shook her head. “Seriously, you don’t want to know.” The woman might be friends with her cousin, but Ceara wasn’t about to tell her about the stupid – usually dangerous – things they did. She set the groceries down on the floor outside her apartment to fish out her keys from her pocket before heading inside. Ceara made quick work of putting away the perishables before setting the rest down on the table, intending to finish unloading them later. She didn’t want to keep Lisa waiting.

"By the way, how are his shoulder, ribs, and knee healing?"

Ceara glanced up, frowning slightly. Andrew had been hurt again? He didn’t say anything about them when they were on the mission. “They’re doing fine,” she lied. She’d have to yell at him the next time she saw him for being stupid enough to go on a mission while injured. The girl returned back to the older woman and ushered her out the door.

"Do you have any preferences on what we get or would rather we not go to?"

She shook her head. “Nah, anything’s fine, really. You can choose, you’re the one treating me, anyway.”

"Well, how about Chinese then?" she asked, smiling as she clasped her hands in front of her stomach. Her smile widened at the happy response that her suggestion received. "Alright, Chinese it is."

Lisa hummed softly in thought then nodded. "We'll go to Xiao Ren's, if that's alright with you? They're not too far from here and I think the quality is excellent," she said, indicating the direction they needed to go before starting that way.

"If you don't mind my asking, how long have you and Andrew known each other? I only ask because he's never mentioned you and I'm sure you're as aware as I am of how much he enjoys talking." She smiled, a fond look in her eyes. It was hard to dislike Andrew, in her opinion, so the look was warranted and shouldn't be the least bit surprising.

When they got to the restaurant, Lisa smiled and thanked the waitress who sat them at a table and handed them menus. She ordered a couple of appetizers to start them before she looked at Ceara. "Feel free to order whatever you'd like."

Ceara grinned widely at the mention of Chinese. Really, she was fine with any kind of food – a simple hot dog or slice of pizza would’ve been absolutely fine, but she hadn’t had Chinese food in a while and it sounded great at the moment. The girl nodded, walking beside the blonde as they made their way to the restaurant.

"If you don't mind my asking, how long have you and Andrew known each other? I only ask because he's never mentioned you and I'm sure you're as aware as I am of how much he enjoys talking."

Her smile grew wider and she nodded again. “Oh, I know what you mean. And I’m not that surprised that he hasn’t mentioned me. We didn’t know each other even existed until last summer. I didn’t know my father had any other family and his told him that mine was dead…” She grimaced slightly before shrugging it off. There was no point in talking about family issues with someone she barely knew. “Anyway, we met by complete coincidence. He nearly ran me over on just some regular day,” Ceara smiled at the memory, “We had a bit of an argument later but a few weeks later we bumped into each other and figured out who we were.”

Ceara sat across from Lisa when they entered the restaurant, ordering water and a bowl of fried rice. “Thanks. How did you and Andrew meet? I know you said you had to patch him up a few times, but how long ago was that?”

Lisa laughed softly and shook her head, rolling her eyes lightly. "Honestly. That young man needs to learn to start paying more attention when he's running. One of these days he's not going to be as lucky as he has been and his power won't be able to help him. And the number of times he had been hit by vehicles is, frankly, worrying."

She poured herself a cup of the tea set at every table then offered it to Ceara, speaking as she did so. "Andrew and I met two years ago. I had just gotten my degree and was on my way home from volunteering when someone landed twenty feet in front of me after apparently committing suicide. It was Andrew. He had slipped on a patch of wet gravel from the rain that had been going on all day. I rushed forward to see what I could do, not expecting much to come of it." She paused to smile, clearly trying not to laugh just yet. "And then he sat up. Imagine my surprise," she said, letting the laughter bubble forth.

Ceara laughed. Yup, Andrew had been hit by cars more often than it was healthy for him. Not that, of course, it was good in the first place to be hit by a car. Though she wasn’t going to mention the time that she had pushed him in front of a car to freak out a friend. That hadn’t ended well at all. She smiled and accepted the cup of tea, blowing on it to cool it down as the woman talked.

She grinned, setting the cup back down on the table. Yeah, she knew exactly how that felt, thinking Andrew was dead only to see him spring back up again. "Yeah, finding out about his power can be a bit of a... shock. I found out almost the same way that you did; except I thought I had killed him." At Lisa's expression, she laughed again. "I promise, it was a complete accident. I had dropped my wallet and Andrew picked it up for me, and then he saw the picture of my father I keep in there. He kept asking questions and I got pissed so I grabbed it out of his hands, pushing him out of the way. We were on a roof - long story - so when I saw him on the ground, I freaked." She snorted softly, taking another sip of the tea. "When he got up again I nearly had a heart attack, jeez."

Lisa's amusement vanished abruptly and she looked at Ceara, clearly startled. She had tried to kill Andrew and was laughing about it? Oh, an accident. The blonde relaxed again and quirked a smile as she listened.

Taking a small drink of her own tea, she tilted her head a little. "I wonder just how many cars he has been hit by," she mused. "Especially since I know he not only will downplay his injuries, but now that he's found out that his power protects him from those kinds of impacts, he won't even say anything if he hasn't been injured. Or if he doesn't want to worry people." She sighed softly, leaning back in her chair as their food was brought out and placed on the table.

Thanking the waitress, she took a bite of her dinner. "You are taking care of him, right? I'm sure you know by now that he's not the best about taking care of himself. Especially when he's gotten it into his head that he isn't important to anyone." And the only reason she knew that was because so many people felt they could open up to her without ridicule and the runner had been no exception.

Ceara smiled and nodded at the waitress in thanks, picking up her spoon and taking a bite. Chewing slowly, she listened to the woman as she spoke. It was surprising that Lisa knew so much about Andrew; it had taken her a while to lean about Andrew’s insecurities and she was his cousin. And he hadn’t even told her voluntarily, it had just came out that night. The girl sighed, swallowing and taking a sip of her water.

“I know. I try. I try hard to take care of him, but it’s difficult to take care of someone who doesn’t want it, or I guess for Andrew, doesn’t want to bother other people.” Ceara guessed she understood where he was coming from, she could be the same way sometimes. But that didn’t make it any less frustrating. “He has my number, he has keys to my apartment. I don’t really have much, but I do have a couch, and he’s welcome to it anytime… but he rarely takes me up on that.” She huffed, pushing the rice around her bowl. “Sometimes I just want to throttle him so he can see how much he worries people. Andrew’s a great guy, and he has so many people that love him, but he just doesn’t see it.” Ceara sighed again, frowning slightly. “It’s just frustrating to see him think so lowly of himself.”

Catching the look that flashed over Ceara's face, Lisa reached out to lightly set her hand over the younger woman's and smiled gently. "The only reason that Andrew told me is because I have certification as a counselor and he was breaking down over something that had happened to him and never should have. He chose to talk to me while I was treating him rather than act on an alternative. I'm not sure how much you know of what he's been through, but from what little I do know, it wasn't pleasant. And the rest I can guess at from what I've seen of how he acts and heard in the tone of his voice."

Smiling again, she withdrew her hand. "I am happy to see that he is finding people that he is willing to trust in and willing to share those friends with others now."

The blond turned back to her plate and took a bite before using her fork to indicate the starters she had ordered. "Feel free to help yourself," she said before taking another forkful of her chop suey.

She glanced down at the hand on hers, surprised, though she didn’t move, before meeting Lisa’s eyes again and smiling hesitantly. A counselor, huh? That was good to know, maybe Ceara could bring Andrew to her once in a while if she ever felt he needed to talk to someone that wouldn’t fuck it up like she would. “It’s not pleasant at all. I’m sure I only know a fraction of what had happened to him, but it really isn’t.” The younger female paused, brow furrowing. “Would you mind if I sometimes dragged him to see you? Because Andrew occasionally gets in this… mood and he’d never go to you on his own.”

Shaking her head, the frown slipped off her face and she smiled a little, nodding and reaching out to snag an egg roll. “Thanks.” Ceara took a bite, finishing it quickly, spooned some of her dinner into her mouth and swallowed before speaking again. “So how long have you been helping out on the streets?” Lisa was probably in her mid to late twenties, by her guess, so it couldn’t have been more than a handful of years since she had gotten her degree.

Lisa nodded, that same soft smile still on her lips. "Of course. And you're welcome to come speak with me as well. I'm always happy to help and anything that I am told, I keep in confidence. The only reason I'm saying as much about Andrew as I am is because it's easy for me to see that you truly do care for him. And in addition to that, you're part of his family, not only biologically but chosen as well, so that grants a little latitude." She let out a soft laugh. "Plus, knowing Andrew, he'd likely tell you anyway, especially if he has willingly gone to you when in one of those 'moods'. I believe he's only mentioned one other person he seeks out when that happens, otherwise he tries to outrun it."

She tilted her head and pursed her lips as she thought. "Well, I suppose if you'd like to be technical, it's been about ten years because I started volunteering in high school. But, I assume you mean in a medical capacity in which case it's been... almost three years." She smiled again and took a drink of her tea.

Her lips twitched briefly into a smile as she nodded. She doubted she’d ever need to talk to her, but the offer was appreciated. And what Lisa said about Andrew… Ceara neglected to tell her that he had only come to her once and there was no way out of that situation. She was sure that that hadn’t been the last time her cousin had felt like that but he hadn’t come to her once so she had been assuming that he simply didn’t want to talk to her about it, no matter what he said that night. Probably was going to that other person Lisa mentioned instead.

Ceara listened to the woman talk, taking a few more spoonfuls of her dinner while she did so. Three years in a medical capacity… The younger woman wondered what would’ve happened if Lisa had been able to treat people three years before that. Maybe she could’ve gotten her father some help, instead of practically being spat at for asking for help. She smiled slightly at the woman. No use dwelling over something she couldn't change, she told herself for not the first time. “You’re a good person, Lisa,” she murmured. Certainly an exponentially better person compared to her.

Lisa blinked several times as a pale pink overtook her cheeks. "Thank you, but I don't do anything that someone else can't do," she demurred softly, a gentle smile coming to her lips.

She tilted her head, studying Ceara closely. "If you're interested, there are plenty of classes that provide certification in First Aid. And if you can't afford that, I have worked with people before to get them certification, kind of like a work experience program, and paid for them to test the first time. I haven't had a student fail yet," she said with a proud smile. "And it certainly helps for when I'm needed but someone needs to run to get me." That didn't mean it prevented many deaths, but in her opinion just one life saved made the effort worth it, which was one of the main reasons she did what she did.

The blond set aside her fork, having finished her plate, and lifted her teacup to warm her hands, sipping it idly. "Have as much as you'd like," she said softly when it looked like Ceara was going to stop out of politeness. "I live alone and this is a bit much for me to take home so help yourself."

"Can doesn't always mean they will." Everyone was capable of doing good things, but not all - in fact most - didn't. She knew that very well. Ceara wasn't a shining example but some people were so much worse. Weren't doctors supposed to take an oath to help people in need? Not turn them away simply because of what they were or how much money they had in their pockets.

Ceara shook her head, shaking it off again, and smiled. "I'll think about it, Lisa. It sounds really nice, but I'll have to see." It would certainly be a good life skill to have, and she was actually interested, but she still wasn't sure. She smiled when Lisa told her to eat more, picking up another spring roll. She was pretty full by now, though, so she’d probably just finish this and pack up the rest for her roommate.

Once she had finished her food and the waiter had cleared their table, a thought occurred to Ceara, but she hesitated. It was probably the right thing to ask the woman, she wasn’t stupid, but at the same time… “Lisa, can I ask you for something? But you have to promise not to tell Andrew.” Though it wasn’t as if they were talking much right now anyway. Or at all. But Andrew would draw even worse conclusions if he ever found out. “…Is it possible for you to prescribe the pill for me?” She looked down, feeling her face heat up a little after saying that.

Lisa nodded her head at Ceara's response to her offer, turning to reach into her bag for one of her business cards. Holding it out, she said, "Well, when you decide, go ahead and call me. My cell phone number is on the back and the days and hours I'm in the office as well as the office number are on the front. You can also call me any time you need medical attention but can't afford to go to the hospital for one reason or another." Be it literally due to credits or figuratively due to illegal activities.

When the waiter came to box up their food, she paid as well. Looking at Ceara, she nodded. "Any sort of official medical information that isn't immediately relevant to a life or death situation is supposed to be confidential. Since you've asked, I certainly won't say anything. And yes, it is possible for me to, but I'll need to do a physical for you first. If you're okay with that, you can return to my house with me and I'll do it there. I've converted the home office into a simple examining room."

Aid of a Different Sort -- Ceara, Lisa ((complete)) Empty Re: Aid of a Different Sort -- Ceara, Lisa ((complete))

Ceara grinned and accepted Lisa’s card with a nod of thanks, shifting so she could slide it into her pocket. She definitely would keep the woman’s contact information, she could see having a doctor’s number in her phone as a very useful thing.

“Any sort of medical information that isn’t immediately related to a life or death situation is supposed to be confidential.”

Her shoulder visibly relaxed at her agreement. She knew about patient confidentiality, but hearing the blonde’s confirmation just made Ceara feel a lot better. It was embarrassing enough that her roommate knew. It was unavoidable, given how she staggered home at the break of dawn with all sorts of marks on her body. Talia was by no means a stupid woman; she was able to figure it would pretty quickly and now would flash a knowing smirk every single damn time Ceara came home. It irritated her to no end, but if Andrew knew…. He wouldn’t handle that very well, especially after the last time they talked. “Thank you so much,” she said as they both stood and her companion paid for their meal. “And that’s fine.” It was better, actually. Ceara wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible.

Lisa smiled lightly at her and nodded, pulling on her coat and scarf. "You're welcome." On top of the amount for the meal, the doctor left a generous tip, partly because the service had been wonderful, as it usually was, but also partly because she knew their server had a sick mother and that every little bit helped.

"I live in West so we can either walk there or try and catch a bus." She'd offer to pay for a cab, but she had a feeling the younger woman wouldn't agree to that. And the bus would certainly be much faster than the Metro would be considering how roundabout the subway system ended up being most days.

As they made their way to the blonde's home, she turned to Ceara and pulled out a small pad of paper. There was no reason they couldn't get the general questions out of the way first - such as name, age, blood type, allergies, things that might have run in her family, her personal medical history, and so on.
