Brothers are Different -- Andrew, Marjorie, Halt ((canon))
- Spoiler:
- Ella: Marjorie had delivered her last package for the day and was shocked to find it was nearing midnight. She started towards Riley's apartment, avoiding her own place like the plague since some of Carter's men had started bothering her there for rent. Because one bedroom with a shared bathroom was really something to be envious of. Oh wait, there was a mattress too. Wow. Even thinking about it, she couldn't prevent the slight eye roll.
She could feel her little frog swaying on her shoulder as she ran through the quiet streets, headed into the heart of the district as a shortcut. She was glancing at the different alleys, shocked when she saw someone that looked somewhat familiar. "Andrew! What are you doing out here?" She skidded to a stop, turning into the alley and jogging up, her smile fading when she saw that this guy was certainly not her lanky friend.
Wing: The man and his friends had all turned at her call and were looking at her with varying levels of derision, a flashlight getting aimed her way. Until they saw her frog and her eyes, then they turned hostile, quickly moving to box her in. The one she had mistaken as Andrew walked up to her, leaning down to look her in the face.
"Looking for Andrew, huh?" he asked snidely, voice cold. "Afraid the poor little bastard isn't here. Just your bad luck, huh?"
Ella: "Sorry, I thought you were somebody else. I'll just go on my way..." She turned slightly, seeing her path blocked. "Excuse me," she said softly, tensing up.
Wing: He reached out to grab her arm in a harsh grip. "No, stay a while, we'd love to talk." He jerked her around to grab her other arm. "Why don't you tell me how my little brother is doing?"
Ella: She struggled against him, her frog bouncing off her shoulder to attach to his face. "Let me go! I'm not telling you anything!" She kicked at what she could, managing to pull one arm free.
Wing: He let go of her to pull the frog off and throw it against the wall. One of his friends moved forward to grab her arms and yank them behind her back.
"You stupid little whore. You're going to regret that," he growled before slapping her.
Ella: She let out a sharp cry, kicking at him again. "Let go of me!" she repeated as her glasses swung haphazardly from one ear. She raised her voice. "Help!"
Wing: They laughed at her again. "You don't actually think anyone will come, do you?" one of them asked as another punched her in the gut.
Ella: She coughed, going limp in the one guy's arms as she tried to catch her breath. "Leave me alone...what did I do to you?" she demanded weakly, tilting her head to keep her glasses from going underfoot.
Wing: "You exist, you filthy little freak," he said, grabbing her chin to force her to look up.
"That's enough," a familiar voice spoke up from one side, drawing everyone's attention. Before anyone could react, Andrew was moving, his foot swing up and around to slam his heel into the side of one of the group's head. Marjorie was dropped in favor of them leaping at Andrew.
Ella: She fixed her glasses, watching them fight for a moment, dimly recognizing Andrew even as she scrambled for her sketchbook and pen, making a tiny dog. It ran forward, biting the Andrew look-alike's ankle as she scooted back, rubbing her forehead as the headache from her frog built up.
Wing: It became clear pretty quickly that they had not expected Andrew to fight as viciously as he was and that alone scared them off. Her dog chasing them off just added on to the situation.
Andrew moved to her side and set a hand on her shoulder. "Kermit? Marjorie, are you okay?" he asked, ignoring the trickle of blood from his split lip.
Ella: She flinched and closed her eyes like she expected to be hit again. As soon as she recognized Andrew's voice though, she clung to him, crying. "W-who was that?" she stammered, hiding her face in his shirt. Her cheek felt swollen, and she had a feeling it would be bruised later.
Wing: "That was Jared, my older brother, and his friends. They... They really hate people like us." He gently rubbed her back, tucking her head under his chin as he held her close and let her cry, keeping an eye out for anyone else who might decide to approach.
Ella: Eventually she finished, taking her glasses off so she could rub her eyes. "Thank you for saving me." She blinked up at him blearily, pushing her glasses up in place again. "I feel like crap now...and you're bleeding."
Wing: He wiped the blood away then smiled at her, bumping her forehead with his gently. "What are friends for?" he asked before standing and offering her a hand. "Come on, I know somewhere safe we can go to clean up and get some sleep."
Ella: "O-okay." She took his hand and letting him pull her up, clinging to him again, though she was quick to pull herself away. "Where?" She clenched her hand around the strap of her bag, looking around anxiously.
Wing: He tugged her close again, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Not too far. Just a handful of blocks. This way." And knowing Halt, there'd be something non-perishable that he could make for them to eat. And one of the man's shirts would be a dress on her.
Ella: She nodded, tugging at her clothes, then his, anxious and tired. "I'm sorry... I'm not a good fighter."
Wing: "You're fine. To be honest, I'm normally not. I don't like fighting. We're both runners, that's what we're supposed to do." He started to lead her down the street.
Ella: She nodded slightly, grunting when she felt something pop. "Both runners, okay... Where are we going?" She noticed they were in a mostly dead part of town, except for a cafe close by.
Wing: "My friend's place. He gave me a key so I can use if I need to." He led her up and in to the apartment, using said key as needed. Andrew just dumped his bag on the floor in front of the washer figuring that since he was here, he may as well use it. "Come on, you can clean up." He showed her into the bathroom and got her a shirt. "Sorry, no spare underwear for you, but you don't need to worry with me, or him if he comes back. I'm going to snag some clothes and wash mine. Want me to wash yours too?"
Ella: She stumbled as he led her about, looking around in surprise. It smelled vaguely of beer and laundry detergent in the place, as Halt had recently done the wash (and he had a taste for beer after all). "What, who?" She turned back to Andrew, hiding her face when the bathroom light got flicked on, reaching out to turn it off again. "Yeah, um, I'll just throw my clothes out the bathroom door?" she asked, holding the shirt up to herself. It went almost to her knees. "Is this guy a giant?"
Wing: "Halt? Yeah, he's like, a foot taller than I am. And what's wrong with the li-- Oh, right, your res. I know he's got some candles somewhere, want me to grab a couple so that you can see fine?"
Ella: "Please?" she asked, wondering what sort of name Halt was. When Andrew turned, she started working off everything except her bra and underwear, going to find a towel to wrap around herself once she was done stripping.
Wing: Andrew smiled when he found some in the kitchen under the sink then rolled his eyes at the clearly phallic shaped ones. Yeah, no. Those got shoved into the back and he pulled out some more normal ones and a book of matches then carried them into the bathroom and set them on the sink counter and lit them for her. "Oh, what do you want to eat?"
Ella: "Nothing salty," she said quietly, smiling a little. "Thanks Andrew... do you think your friend will be returning tonight?" she asked a little nervously.
Wing: Andrew shrugged. "Depends on if he got the doc to agree to go out with him or not," he said with a laugh. He tugged her into a quick hug. "I promise you, he won't hurt you."
Ella: She squeaked, clinging to the towel as he hugged her. "O-okay." She blinked up at him, glasses glinting in the light. "I'll be right out so you can shower."
Wing: He shook his head. "I don't need one so take your time. I'll wash the blood off in the kitchen while the food is cooking." He smiled at her then headed out, closing the door behind himself. He quickly swapped his clothes and started the food before starting the laundry.
Ella: Halt returned about ten minutes after he had started cooking, frowning at his latest failed attempt to woo the doctor. He heard noise from upstairs and drew his baton, only relaxing when he saw Andrew. "Well, this is a surprise." Yep, the washer was going too. That wasn't surprising. But was the shower running as well?
Marjorie washed slowly, wincing when she touched her new bruises and the cuts on her legs from herself. Once she was cleaned up, she stepped out and pulled on the long shirt, wrapping her soaked hair up and walking out, preferring letting everything be blurred.
Wing: Andrew turned and grinned, hurrying over to hug Halt and press a kiss to his cheek. He then pulled his friend over to the couch and made him sit down. "Hi. Yes, my lip is split. I'm fine. I got into a fight with my brother and his friends. They were beating up on my friend, Marjorie. She's here too but she's a bit skittish right now so please, stay calm." He glanced over when she stepped out, taking a quick step to put himself between her and Halt so that she'd feel safer.
Ella: "What?" Halt let himself be sat down, staring at the dark-skinned girl that stepped out in one of his shirts and very little else. He looked up at Andrew with obvious puzzlement.
Marjorie meanwhile was distracted by the smell of food, following it before she noticed Andrew wasn't in the kitchen area. She saw both the men and stared at them, squinting against the light. "Andrew? Is that Halt?" she asked quietly.
Wing: Andrew smiled. "Yes, this is Halt. He... He flirts, but he doesn't mean anything by it." He shot a look at Halt and mouthed, "She's fifteen," before looking at Marjorie again. "Where are your glasses?"
Ella: "I've already got a headache, so what's the point? Thank you for your things Halt," she added more loudly.
"You're welcome," the older man replied, giving Andrew a somewhat horrified look giving a brief motion towards Marjorie like 'what the hell is she doing not wearing anything then?'
Wing: Andrew nodded at the washer then indicated that he was wearing Halt's clothes too. He hadn't ever been able to fit into Halt's boxers and, even as thin as he was, he was a little broader than Marjorie. Hell, the only reason the sweat pants were staying on were due to the drawstring (it hadn't been a problem before since he'd just walk around naked). "Food's almost done. There's enough for you too, Halt." He started to the stove. "How'd it go?" he asked, amused.
Ella: Halt sighed and just leaned back against the couch. "She said no, again. I gave her some more flowers. I have a feeling she just throws them out."
Marjorie listened to them both for a minute before going to the armchair, curling up carefully.
Wing: Andrew laughed softly. "Nah, she wouldn't do that. She'd give them to some of her patients instead." He vanished into the bedroom real quick to grab a blanket for Marjorie to cover up with and snag her glasses as well. "So, how many times is this?" he asked, grinning teasingly.
Ella: "I'm not willing to air my romantic misdeeds in front of a young, easily impressionable girl. She might get the idea that I'm unlikeable," Halt joked.
Marjorie took her glasses and the blanket, giggling a little at what Halt had said.
Wing: Andrew snorted. "She's a girl though. She's probably got better advice than I do. After all, I've never been seriously wooed barring one instance that I'm not going to count." He brought over a bowl of stew for each of his friends then went back to get his own, snagging the loaf of bread, tub of butter, and a knife as well to set on the table before he flopped next to Halt. "And besides, if I wanted her to think you were unlikable, I have plenty of stories for that," he said with a laugh, flashing a smile at Halt.
Ella: "I have absolutely no advice. Don't ask someone's who has been a shut in most her life." She dug into the stew, starving.
"You'll keep your mouth shut if you want your clothes dried," Halt fake threatened, taking a bit. He got up to get the salt, preferring some flavor.
Wing: "You love me too much to do that. Plus, her clothes are in with mine and we both know you wouldn't do that, gentleman that you are," Andrew retorted before he slathered a couple pieces of bread in butter and happily spooned some of the stew on to make a sandwich he then took a large bite out of.
Ella: "I could separate them," he replied simply, returning. "And you, how do you eat so badly and yet you're skinny as a rail?" He looked at Marjorie. "Do you know the answer to this mystery?"
She gave them an owlish look before shaking her head quickly, mouth full.
Wing: Andrew paused and gave him a queer look, swallowing before he spoke. "We've been over this before: high energy output, low food intake." He pouted and looked at his chest. "I'm not that skinny, am I?"
Ella: "You're thin as a rail," Halt retorted. "You both are."
Wing: Andrew glanced at Marjorie. "She's the same as me - a runner who doesn't eat enough, only she's got her own place." He shrugged and turned back to his sandwich, taking another large bite with relish.
Ella: Marjorie snorted a bit, remembering what she had been thinking about before she had been attacked before digging in deeper.
Halt frowned. "But you have a place here," he said quietly.
Wing: Andrew slid over to press against Halt's side. "Yeah, I do, but it's still your place. We share it." He smiled up at Halt. "It's still home, don't worry. I wouldn't have it without you."
Ella: Marjorie was watching them before making a gag me motion with her spoon, finishing the stew before tearing off a large hunk of bread.
Halt smiled and relaxed. "All right."
Wing: Andrew threw a bit of crust at Marjorie and stuck his tongue out at her before laughing. "Oh, Halt, you know how you had like, eight cans of stew? Yeah, you don't anymore. You're going to need to get more later."
Ella: She poked her tongue back out at him, chewing on the bread happily.
Halt pretended to sigh. "I'm going to need more warning if I get anymore of your friends dropping by, okay sweetheart?"
Marjorie snorted at the nickname.
Halt ignored her.
Wing: Andrew stuck his tongue out again, relaxing against Halt. "It was a bit last minute. And where's the fun in ruining the surprise?"
Ella: "Making sure I've got food in the fridge that is enough to feed a small hoard?" He stroked Andrew's hair a moment while Marjorie, silent as she usually was around newcomers, started to fall asleep, still nibbling on the bread.
Wing: Andrew snorted softly, lowering his voice so Marjorie wasn't disturbed. "It's not like I have many friends to bring over." He leaned his head against Halt's shoulder after setting his empty bowl on the table.
Ella: "Yes but you two just ate about half the food in my pantry," Halt mimicked him, setting down his own bowl, still mostly full. "What happened to you two?"
Wing: Andrew shook his head, nodding at Marjorie. She wasn't fully asleep yet and he didn't want to talk about it when she could maybe get agitated. He stood, starting to gather the dishes.
Ella: She heard the commotion of china plates clinking together and stirred to help, picking up her bowl and the bread.
Halt disappeared to go set up the bedroom, making sure the sheets and such were clean. "Don't bother washing the dishes; we can take care of that in the morning. Just worry about the food."
Wing: "Marjorie, sit down again. I've got it, but thanks. And sure Halt." Andrew shooed her back to the chair and took her bowl and the bread then headed to the kitchen.
Ella: "No, let me help," she complained, still following and pouting up at the redhead.
Wing: Andrew raised his eyebrows at her then nodded. "Grab the butter and salt, would you please?"
Ella: "Okay." She walked back, pulling the blanket over her head to block the light a bit. She gathered as much as she could before returning with the requested items.
Halt returned, gently swapping the items for a plastic wrapped toothbrush and toothpaste.
She disappeared.
"Why are there candles in my bathroom?" the brunet asked.
Wing: "Her restitution makes her light sensitive," Andrew answered absently, rinsing the bowls out then turning to pack the food away.
Ella: "Ah, so that's why she's got those weird glasses." He pulled Andrew around. "Now tell me what happened. You both looked beat up pretty well, and she looks like a mouse with how jumpy she is."
Wing: "Well, she needs them to see too," he muttered then sighed. "Jared happened. I don't know how, but he and his friends had her surrounded. I heard her call for help and when I got there, she had already been hit a few times and was being held up. I..." He huffed and ran a hand through his hair. "I got mad and jumped them. Pretty sure I gave a concussion to the first guy when I kicked him in the head." He grinned then, a little viciously. "And I think I broke Jared's jaw again."
Ella: He let out a long sigh and pulled Andrew into a hug, kissing him softly. "I'm glad you're protective of your friend but I can't help but worry about you," he said softly, not knowing he was being watched by a pair of bright green eyes.
"So...are you two going to fuck? Because I can go to Riley's once I get my clothes," Marjorie said quietly.
Wing: Andrew let out a surprised laugh then buried his face against Halt's chest, still laughing. It took him a little to stop then he turned to Marjorie. "Nah, you're going to stay here tonight. Or, we're both going to walk you to Riley's. Whichever you'll be more comfortable with."
Ella: "He lives too far... where do I sleep?" she asked, looking back at the couch.
Halt, blushing a bit, shook his head. "You two are going to sleep in the bed. I'll take the couch."
Wing: Andrew looked at Halt and shook his head. "You won't fit on the couch. We'll all fit on the bed. Halt, you'll be next to the wall and I'll lay in the middle and Marjorie'll be able to get out if she feels uncomfortable," he said firmly, the look on his face saying that he wasn't going to take arguments.
Ella: He sighed and nodded, nuzzling the top of his head. "Whatever you say sweetie."
Marjorie made another face, only for Halt to stick his tongue out at her, making her laugh.
Wing: Andrew grinned and pushed Halt toward the bedroom. "You go change while I swap out the clothes."
Ella: "Crap, I have to wear clothes to bed, don't I?" He pretended to pout, disappearing for a few minutes.
Marjorie watched Andrew blearily. "So, are you dating the jolly green giant's brother?" she asked.
Wing: Andrew smiled and walked over to sling his arm around her shoulders. "We're not dating."
Ella: "Then why is he all but marking you?" she asked, looking up at him and pulling away to swap the loads.
Wing: He rolled his eyes. "Because that's Halt. It doesn't help that we lost touch for a few months and he was thinking that I didn't want him involved in my life anymore." He passed her the detergent then hopped onto the counter. "We've got a complicated relationship, but we've never dated. And we likely never will. And we're both okay with that." Though, he did have the hidden fear that if Halt did catch the attentions of the doctor, he'd be forgotten about and left behind, abandoned yet again.
Ella: "Okay..." She focused on pouring the detergent, starting the next load. "But I don't think I like him rubbing up all over you... makes me think of other stuff."
Wing: Andrew frowned softly. "What do you mean?" he asked, setting a hand on her shoulder to turn her toward him.
Ella: She tugged away, looking down. "You told me some of the stuff you've got to do to get by, remember? And yeah... sort of makes me think of that."
Wing: Andrew nodded slowly. "Well, we do. Halt and I have a casual, fluid relationship. Sometimes we need someone to talk to, sometimes we just need sex. We're... best friends and brothers and protectors and lovers and a lot more. It's hard to describe." He frowned at how she pulled away. "Does that make you uncomfortable?"
Ella: "Sharing a bed with you two without any underwear... probably in the same bed you've done it with him..." She shrugged. "Sorry, I'm just paranoid I think."
Wing: He set his hands on her shoulders and turned her toward him, meeting her eyes. "I will never force you to do anything. And neither will Halt. And Halt won't sleep with anyone underage. I'm an exception because he thought I was of age and... He was someone I needed. I made him. If it would make you more comfortable, Halt and I can stay out here." It wouldn't be the first time they had slept on the floor of the living room.
Ella: She smiled a bit at him. "Okay... thank you." She shuffled forward, hugging him tight as Halt came out.
"Did I miss something?" he asked, confused.
Wing: Andrew grinned brightly, hugging Marjorie back. "Nope. Just grab some blankets and pillows for us. Kermit's going to take the bed."
Ella: "No, you guys can stay," she said, looking at Halt and back at Andrew. "I'm just not going to bed til I have some underpants on."
Halt flushed again and stared at Andrew.
Wing: Andrew just raised his eyebrows at Halt like 'what?' then laughed and shook his head. "See? I told you that you didn't need to worry with him. He can look a bit intimidating, but he's a teddy bear." He grinned at Halt. "I like cuddling with him at any rate."
Ella: "I am not a teddy bear," he grumbled to himself. "I'm going to bed before any more of my reputation is ruined."
Marjorie laughed and leaned against the counter, staring at the pattern. "You can go ahead to bed to Andrew. I'll be in in a few minutes."
Wing: He hesitated. "Are you sure? You're not going to take off, are you?" he asked in concern, watching her.
Ella: She shook her head. "Nu-uh. I'm just waiting for my panties." She gave him her glasses. "Proof I won't run."
Wing: He laughed softly and nodded, dropping a kiss to her forehead. "Okay. See you in there." He turned and went to join Halt, setting the glasses on the side table before crawling into the bed.
Ella: "Where is your little friend?" Halt asked, sitting up as Andrew entered.
Wing: "Waiting for her underwear."
Ella: "And you really thought it was a good idea for her to wander around without them?" he asked, stifling a yawn.
Wing: "Better than ones that were dirty," he countered, curling up against Halt.
Ella: He pulled Andrew close, kissing him softly. "I'm going to have to stock up on underwear too, aren't I?"
Wing: He laughed softly. "Might not hurt. Just don't ask me to wear any of it."
Ella: Halt pretended to pout. "But you'd look so sexy," he protested quietly. "Just one pair?"
Marjorie stopped the dryer, fishing out a mostly dry pair of panties and slipping them on. She was quick to return to the bedroom, interrupting the conversation.
Wing: Andrew let out a soft sigh of relief that he didn't have to reply to that just yet. Halt could talk him into just about anything and he really wasn't sure he wanted to try cross-dressing with women's underwear. He didn't imagine it would be too comfortable. And, yeah, he had worn that dress that one time, but had been able to wear regular briefs under it. "Hey, Kermit. Ready to get some sleep?"
Ella: Halt released Andrew from his grip to let him do whatever he wanted, lying back instead.
"Mm-hmm... my head is killing me," she replied quietly, crawling into the big bed and curling up on her side, staring up at him and the larger man behind him.
Wing: Andrew smiled at her. "Would you be more comfortable if I was facing Halt?"
Ella: "No," she said and wiggled up to him almost immediately, tucking into his chest. "I feel safe with you Andrew."
Wing: He smiled again and nodded. "Okay." He reached back and grabbed Halt's arm, draping it over both him and Marjorie then wrapped his arms around her. "Good night guys."
Ella: "Good night," Halt replied warmly, pressing against him from behind.
Marjorie flinched at first, relaxing when Andrew hugged her. "Night," she mumbled, burying her face in his shirt before falling asleep.
Wing: Andrew smiled then glanced back at Halt. "We'll see," he whispered before pressing a kiss to his chin and closing his eyes, dropping into sleep as well.
