Alleyway Meetings and New Friends -- Halt, Shade ((canon))
- Spoiler:
- Wing: Shade grumbled softly, tugging her goggles off. Ignoring the blood dripping from her forehead and the men that were around her, she looked at the lenses. Oh, that one was going to need to be replaced later, but it should hold for now. She glanced up at the insults being thrown her way and shook her head, letting her eyes half close. Yes, it was night out, but it was a little bright from the street light half a block away and it bothered her eyes. Plus, she wanted to conceal the bright reflectiveness of her irises. Tensing when a couple of them stepped toward her, she shifted her weight a little and waited.
Ella: Halt had finished some business of leaving a clump of flowers in Lisa's office: a small vase, hand picked wildflowers from the park he had gone to that day with Andrew. Now he was headed back to his shop and apartment when he thought he saw the start of a fight in on the the alleys that bumped up against the back of the shop. With a sigh, he pulled out his baton, dimly aware that it looked like a three on one fight and the one was a girl besides. Youngish looking too. "Oi! Don't you lot know that these alleys aren't meant for fighting?" He let the baton extend with a flick of his wrist, bringing it down on the nearest thug's head with a satisfying thunk.
Wing: Shade glanced at him then grunted softly as her arm was grabbed in her distraction. Turning a little, she lifted her hand and called up her mutation, wrapping it around the two standing men who had accosted her and threw them into the brick walls. She looked at Halt then, watching him warily.
Ella: He glanced at the men and unlocked his baton, letting it shrink back to pocket size. "Nice mutation Miss. Better than a friend of mine." He glanced at the goggles and her eyes, especially the way she was squinting. "You want out of the streets for a bit? I've got a phone you can use if you need to get anywhere soon."
Wing: She hesitated, eying him, then huffed softly. "Do you have a first aid kit?" She hoped the cut wasn't going to require stitches, but she'd apply them if she needed to.
Ella: "Course. Don't go into my line of work without one." He gestured for her to follow, leading the way to the front of the shop and through the door.
Wing: She nodded slowly and followed him, using the sleeve of her hoodie to wipe some of the blood off of her face before tugging her goggles back on. She needed to start carrying a spare pair of sunglasses, just in case this happened again.
Inside the shop, she glanced around curiously as she followed him.
Ella: He didn't bother turning the lights on downstairs but led the way up, automatically flipping on the main room's light switch.
Wing: She closed the eye behind the broken lens, grumbling softly but didn't speak up. "Thank you for the help earlier. And the use of your kit."
Ella: "Not a problem. Now I know you all got restitutions. So what's yours so I don't make any loud noises or can expect you to fall asleep or something." He spoke as he disappeared, pulling out the small but versatile kit.
Wing: Shade hesitated then sighed, sitting at the kitchen table and closing her eyes before pulling off her goggles. "Light sensitivity."
Ella: "Oh, so light's off?" He set the kit next to her hand, letting it nudge. "And want me to find a pair of sunglasses until you get those fixed up?"
Wing: "I can just keep my eyes closed if you're going to look at my head," she answered. "And I can manage with my goggles. It's just the one lens. Thank you though."
Ella: "All right. Just keep your shadows to yourself if I use disinfectant on you. I'll try to warn you." His voice was warm, like he was making a joke.
Wing: She huffed. "My control isn't that bad," she mumbled, either not getting it or having heard similar many times before.
Ella: He patted her shoulder lightly before opening the box, moving her hair about carefully until he found the wound in question. "I just meant, I'd rather not get killed while trying to help you because you think I'm going to hurt you somehow. I'm just a regular ole human after all, nothing special. this is going to sting." He doused a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide and gently pressed it against her scalp.
Wing: She snorted, covering her wince. "Normal humans have hurt me plenty," she muttered, thinking of her uncle. He had easily been the one to hurt her the worst, with two excptions - 'Alice' with her knife and teleporting and 'Hippo' with his damn mouth.
She held still while he worked. "Why did you help me?"
Ella: "There's no fighting around my shop. I like to keep it that way. Plus three on one isn't really fair, especially considering your goggles were already broken." He set the cotton ball side, gingerly pressing the wound close with his fingers. "Yeah, this will be okay without stitches. Just got to use some of that weird glue from the hospital, then a gauze bandage, and we're done." He was quick, touch light, though she felt a warm gel oozing in her hair a bit. "Oops. Too much. So what should I call you, Miss Shadow Controller? I'm Halt."
Wing: "Shade," she answered with a bit of a wry twist to her lips. "You've done this before, haven't you?" She had no comment about the fight being fair considering that she was a harbinger and the men hadn't been.
Ella: "Maybe. A couple of times." He added the bandage before packing everything up. "I'm going to turn on the bedroom light and turn off the main, okay?" he called before swapping the lights, so the main area was dark, except for a triangle of light away from the kitchen.
Wing: She carefully opened her eyes then blinked a little to adjust, glancing around for Halt. Everything was lit up perfectly fine for her and he could see her eyes clearly. She blinked again when she saw his height. And she had thought Fye was tall. "Whoa," she muttered.
Ella: "I usually only hear that from people in the day." He smiled and sat down, watching her curiously. "So, need to phone anyone?"
Wing: She shook her head. "My phone is fine and no one will worry for a good few hours yet." At least she had finished her mission before all of this had happened.
Ella: "Mmm...So food then? I'm a bit hungry myself." He got up once more, gingerly lifting one foot with a frown. His feet were sore after walking all day. He dug around in the pantry for a good snack.
Wing: She glanced at his feet. "Are you okay?" she asked. "A-and sure. I guess." He was a bit confusing and she wasn't sure how to take him.
Ella: "Yep. Just sore footed or however you say that. I think I have chips. BBQ. Want some?"
Wing: "That's fine. Thank you." She watched him curiously. After a moment, she piped up. "You look like my dad. Or, well, how he did." She frowned softly, not sure that that sounded right.
Ella: "That's not something I've heard much." He returned with the chips, pulling the clip off the bag. "How old are you anyway?" Taking a handful, he shoved the bag to her.
Wing: She tugged off her gloves before reaching in for a chip. "Why?" She remembered Kier going on about her age at one point. But then he had said the opposite so... He was probably the most confusing person she knew.
Ella: "Curious just how old I look. I'm a bit vain you see." He grinned at her before taking a chunk out of his handful.
Wing: "My dad died when I was five. He was twenty five and I've only seen pictures." She shrugged a bit carelessly then ate a chip. "You've got the same eyes as him and his hair was dark too."
Ella: "Twenty five you say..." He tried to think. "Well that's better than what I've been saying. What about you? Eighteen maybe?"
Wing: It was close enough so she nodded. After all, it was only a few months until she was eighteen. "How old are you?" she countered.
Ella: "Twenty-five." He gave a teasing grin, snagging the bag back for more to eat.
Wing: She let out a laugh, a bit surprised then tilted her head at him. "You act a bit like someone I know," she said softly, expression and tone turning a bit sad. "He teases and jokes about everything."
Ella: "I have a friend like that as well. It gets a bit ludicrous at times when he's over." He mimed a bow. "So I take that as a compliment from the lovely stranger in my apartment. Want something to drink?"
Wing: She blinked at the bow then laughed, pushing back thoughts of Kier. No matter how much she missed him, none of it was her fault and if she went back to him, he'd just do it again. And since he hadn't called her...
"Yes, please."
Ella: "Water, milk, beer, orange juice? I'm a bit of a milk drinker myself. Though I have wine too I think. And wine...coolers?" He pulled open the fridge to confront the pink beverages. "Huh. When did those get in here?"
Wing: She closed her eyes , turning her face away a little. "What are wine coolers?" she asked.
Ella: "They're like the kool aid version of beer. Sweeter, low alcohol content. I have strawberry and key lime... Andrew. Had to be him. I don't buy those." He was mumbling to himself now.
Wing: She tilted her head, curious. "I've never had one of those before." To be fair, she hadn't ever had any alcohol before.
Ella: "Well, you're eighteen. Want one? He won't miss it." He pulled a green and pink drink out, shutting the fridge before giving Shade her choice.
Wing: She hesitated then nodded. "A strawberry one, please." She smiled at him as she accepted the one and opened it before taking a sip. And the look on her face after that was likely going to make him laugh.
Ella: "What's with that face? I told you it's like kool aid." He was trying not to snort, opening his own. A little alcohol to take his mind off his feet. Just what he needed.
Wing: "It's a little bitter," she mumbled, stubbornly taking another swig. No, she didn't much like it, but she wasn't going to let a stupid drink get the better of her.
Ella: He laughed, watching her with great interest. "I could finish that off for you and get you some milk instead."
Wing: "I like fruit juice more," she said absently, glaring at the bottle. Best thing to do was get it over with quickly. She took in a deep breath then tossed her head back and started to chug it down. When the bottle was empty, she set it down with a clunk and then shuddered. "Ugh."
Ella: He was struggling to contain his laughter, standing to pull out the orange juice instead. He poured her a glass, still grinning at her.
Wing: She pouted then stuck her tongue out at him. "Thanks," was said in response to the orange juice and she promptly took a drink of that. "I don't think I like wine coolers much."
Ella: "Really? I didn't notice." He finished his own, leaning back. "So, Shade, what are you doing in North in the middle of the night?"
Wing: She blinked then shrugged. "I finished something and was walking home. I had been debating going to see another friend, but he'd have healed me and I don't like when he does that."
Ella: "Ah. Mmm... well do you have a place you need to be tonight? Because I am more than willing to escort you where you need to go." He offered in hopes that if she said no, she wouldn't be too bothered with sharing a bed.
Wing: She thought about it then shook her head. "My roommate won't worry until tomorrow and my b--" She let out a breath. "And no one else knows I was out to be able to worry about it."
Ella: "Ah, well, I do have two options then. I've got one bed and one couch. Sadly, I can't fit on the couch, but I also can't let you sleep there, so if you mind sharing, I can sleep out here on the floor." He looked at her clothes. "You can borrow some of Andrew's things to sleep in."
Wing: She shrugged. "I don't mind sharing. I like sleeping with people."
Ella: He flushed a bit. "I'm going to assume you mean some way other than sex," he said quietly.
Wing: She blinked. "Why does everyone think that's what I mean?" She huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "I just don't like sleeping alone," she added a bit petulantly.
Ella: "Um because maybe terminology runs that way?" he suggested, shrugging. "And it doesn't help if the party you're speaking to doesn't like sleeping alone in either context," he added with a wink.
Wing: She blinked again and blushed, looking down to fiddle with her juice glass. The only reason she got that was due to Kier's influence, and she knew it. And it just made her miss him even more.
Ella: He watched her more intently. "I'm not saying I want to have sex with you, not that you're not good looking in your own right - just wouldn't force you to - oh shit. Screw that. Are you okay?"
Wing: Shade gave him a somewhat watery smile. "Yeah, I'm fine," she said, forcing a bit of cheerfulness into her voice.
Ella: "Okay, it's dark and all that, but I'm not inclined to believe you, my dear. And I'm a stranger, sort of. You can talk to me and never have to see me again." He leaned forward.
Wing: She tilted her head at him, meeting his eyes. "...My boyf-- my ex-boyfriend flirted like that." She looked down again.
Ella: "Oh." He clammed up. "So I take it I should stop."
Wing: She forced a smile and shook her head. "You're fine." She looked up, a little confused. "I just don't understand. He said that he cared for me, but then he was having sex with other women. That's... It doesn't make sense to me."
Ella: He tried to think, feeling distinctly awkward. "Well...did you bring this up with him?"
Wing: "It's why we broke up. He acted like it wasn't a big deal." She huffed. "Nevermind. I don't want to bother you with this."
Ella: "You're not, I promise." This could help him in the future. "If he didn't take your concerns seriously, then maybe it's a good thing you two broke it off. If... if a man doesn't recognize what he's got with a special someone and keeps hurting them, he doesn't deserve that person." He flushed. "Basically, if he knew it bothered you to that point and still did it, he was being a jerk and doesn't deserve to have someone loving him." He reached forward to touch her hand lightly.
Wing: She blinked and looked at their hands then turned hers over to grab his. "He knew I didn't like it when one of his friends kissed him in front of me, and that was months ago, when we first started dating. I just... Isn't sex supposed to be something important and special? Why would you want to have sex with more than one person or someone you don't care for?" She reached her free hand up to wipe at her eyes.
Ella: He hesitated. "It depends on the type of sex, for some. Some people don't care at all." He took a deep breath. "But the important thing is to talk with your partner and find out what is and isn't important to them. For you, kissing, sex, that sort of thing is special and is only for those who are in love? And for him, it's more casual. But he should've respected your wishes, if he wanted to keep you... that's all I can say."
Wing: She nodded a little, just thinking on Kier and the relationship they had had. He had been so many firsts for her - her first kiss, her first crush, her first boyfriend, her first sexual partner, her first heartbreak. And her only for all of those except kissing.
Shaking her head, Shade looked up at Halt. "I'm sorry."
Ella: He moved about the table, pulling her up into one of his hugs that all but buried the other in his arms. "It's all right." He let her go with a small smile. "I'm not that great at relationships myself, but I understand how it feels to be in your shoes."
Wing: She let out a soft noise of surprise at the hug then relaxed against him, enjoying it. She loved hugs. Tilting her head back to look up at him, she smiled back. Debating quickly, she shrugged and created a box for herself to stand on so she could be about eye level with him then leaned forward and kissed him.
Ella: He kissed back but was quick to pull back in surprise. "Um, Shade?" He gave her a questioning look, holding her gently by the shoulders in case she tried to lean forward again.
Wing: She blinked and gave him a curious look. "What?"
Ella: "May I ask why you decided to kiss me so suddenly?"
Wing: "Because I'm curious."
Ella: He gave her a confused look. "About what?"
Wing: "How it would feel to kiss you." Yeah, part of that was likely the alcohol, but not all of it. She just wasn't likely to act on it without it.
Ella: "Well, sorry, you didn't get a very good sample." He gave her a small smile, releasing her to look at the box she had made.
Wing: She huffed and pouted. She was going to get a better 'sample' then. Even though she didn't like her uncle, that didn't mean she hadn't learned anything from him and the scientific method was one of those things.
The box was made of an oddly smoky, inky black material that seemed to shift and move even though it was clearly a cube and was more solid than it looked.
Ella: "Hmm, now this is cool. Andrew is a parkour nut though, so maybe it's a good thing he's got his power." He poked the box curiously.
Wing: Shade hopped down and the box shifted into something more amorphous. A tendril reached out to wrap around his finger.
Ella: He shook his finger curiously, looking up at her. "And you control it? Does it respond to your thoughts or emotions?"
Wing: She shrugged. "Both? It's instinct a lot of the time." She looked aside. "My control isn't as good as it should be, but I'm getting better." With a vague gesture, the shadows turned into a ball then a chair then what kind of looked like the swirling decorations at the top of wrought iron gates.
Ella: He smiled and straightened, patting her shoulder since her head was bandaged. "You have quite a skill."
Wing: She blushed softly. "Thanks." She let the shadows fade back to their normal state. "And thanks for not being afraid."
Ella: "No problem. Now, I've had a long day and I'm fairly tired. So let me find something for you to change into and we can go to bed, if that's all right?" He gave her a soft smile.
Wing: She nodded. "I can just wear my t-shirt and panties," she offered, already tugging off her hoodie then her sneakers.
Ella: He went red. "Um, you know how I said some see sex as just casual? That's me, by the way, usually... if um..." He was tempted to just lay on the floor.
Wing: She shook her head. "I've only had sex once. And that was right before I had to dump him, so I'm not open to that." She was perfectly content with cuddling though.
Ella: "All right, so long as I know my boundaries." He went into the bedroom, still flushed as he flicked off the light. He stripped to his boxers and t-shirt, pulling the covers back and going to brush his teeth quickly.
Wing: Shade shoved her socks into her shoes then followed him, taking off her pants to fold and set on the dresser then slipped her bra from under her shirt and crawled into bed, still used to being nearer to the wall.
Ella: He finished brushing his teeth and washing his face, crawling into bed after her. "So, you're okay with cuddling?" he said timidly, opening an arm up as an offering.
Wing: She nodded, scooting over to press against his side. "You know, that wasn't a good kiss."
Ella: "Aw, I'm sorry. You just startled me is all." He smiled, squeezing her softly.
Wing: She smiled back, taking that as permission to kiss him again. She pushed up to do that.
Ella: He kissed her lightly, enough to show he wasn't just toying with her, not enough to pressure her into anything more. "Better?" he asked as he pulled away.
Wing: She nodded, clearly thinking it over. "You are the second best person I've kissed," she said seriously.
Ella: "Oh, be still my beating heart. You've wounded me, my dear. Just the second?" He nuzzled her lightly, giving her another little grin and closing his eyes.
Wing: She laughed softly. "Well, my roommate and I didn't really care. And the friend I kissed wasn't expecting it so he kind of freaked out a bit. And then my boy-- my ex." She shrugged lightly. "Kissing you doesn't feel the same."
Ella: "That's all right then." He stroked her hair lightly. "Tomorrow, shall you stay for breakfast?"
Wing: "I can," she answered, laying down and curling up. "I shouldn't cook though. I'm really bad at it."
Ella: "I'm used to cooking breakfast." He smiled a bit, relaxing.
Wing: She smiled and burrowed into his side. "You're good for cuddling," she mumbled softly then yawned.
Ella: "Thanks." He was good for a lot more, but he wasn't up for pushing it.
Wing: Yeah, he might get thrown into a wall if he did. Kier had been after all.
It didn't take long for Shade to fall asleep, relaxing against him.
Ella: He relaxed a bit too, pushing her hair back lightly before he fell asleep as well. When he woke the next morning, he wriggled free, making sure his curtains were drawn tight for her before going to cook a pack of bacon, starving.
Wing: It took a bit of work because she really latched on, but once Halt had freed himself, she rolled over and curled up, vanishing under the blankets. The smell of food woke her though and she carefully poked her head out. Grumbling a little, she wandered out to the kitchen, eyes barely open until she was able to get to the table which was where her goggles had been left. She pulled them on then looked around for Halt.
Ella: He was in front of the stove, humming, totally focused on the sizzling back for now.
Wing: She tilted her head then grabbed a couple of glasses from the cabinet he had gone in last night and poured him milk and herself orange juice. "Morning," she greeted.
Ella: He jumped. "Morning." He smiled at her a bit. "How's the head?"
Wing: "Throbs a little, but that's because it's bright," she said, gesturing vaguely at the window. Now that he had full light and she wasn't covered, Halt was able to see the odd circular scars along her arms and legs, nothing like Andrew's, and the long scar over her left thigh that had clearly come from some sort of blade.
"What are you cooking?" she asked.
Ella: "Bacon." He turned off the stove, lifting the last few pieces clear. Then he knelt, touching her thigh lightly. "Looks like someone put you through hell," he commented dryly.
Wing: She blinked, stepping back in surprise. "Oh, that one is from a bounty."
Ella: "And what about these?" He grabbed her arm lightly, tracing a circular scar now.
Wing: Shade carefully pulled her arm away. "My uncle," she said softly, rubbing her arm. The man was dead now so she wasn't as frightened to share that information as she had been.
Ella: He frowned and tucked her hair behind one ear. "I'm sorry. Seems people who should care for you only hurt... How do you like your eggs?"
Wing: She blushed softly at how gentle he was with her. "U-um. Any way is fine. I'm not picky."
Ella: "All right. And help yourself to bacon. Ever had eggs over easy with toast?" he asked with a grin.
Wing: She tilted her head then shrugged. "I'm not sure. What does it look like?"
Ella: "The white's all cooked around the yellow. You sop the yellow up with the toast and a bit of salt for the whole thing. Delicious."
Wing: She nodded. "Okay. Sounds good." She smiled at him then took a piece of bacon to nibble on.
Ella: He pulled the eggs out and started cooking them, humming again softly. "So where do you live?" he asked after finishing one.
Wing: "In East with my roommate. I do own a couple of houses up here though," she answered, unconcerned as she sipped her juice.
Ella: "Well, after breakfast, we'll worry about you getting home nice and safe." He placed an egg on a plate, pushing the lever down on his toaster.
Wing: She gave him an odd look. "I can get home fine. Why would either of us worry about it?"
Ella: "I am a worrier." He added another egg to cook, making one for himself.
Wing: She nodded slowly, finishing her piece of bacon. "Another of my friends is too, even though he tries to act otherwise sometimes."
Ella: "Mmm. You have a lot of friends then." He pushed the second egg onto his plate and took the toast out as it popped up. He sat to eat.
Wing: She smiled and nodded. "Yeah. I've been meeting a lot of people since the end of last summer." She took a bite of her food and hummed softly. "This is good."
Ella: "Glad you approve." He ate and watched her. She certainly was an odd one, he thought to himself. "You're cute you know."
Wing: She blinked then blushed. "Wh-what?" she stuttered, staring at him.
Ella: He smiled and laughed. "You're cute. And you keep getting cuter the more you blush."
Wing: Her blush deepened and she looked down. She never knew how to react when she was called cute. "Th-thanks?"
Ella: "You're welcome. Don't worry, I'll be honorable. Though I may have to steal one last kiss from you before you leave."
Wing: "Uh-um. O-okay?" she applied herself to her food, finding that discretion was the better part of valor at this point.
Ella: He shook his head, still laughing to himself. He ate as well, finishing off his food.
Wing: When she finished, Shade stood and lifted her plate to take to the sink for washing.
Ella: "Nope, my apartment. I'll clean up. You can go wash up and make yourself presentable." He stood and took her plate away before she could argue.
Wing: She blinked then shrugged, going into the bedroom to dress. After using the bathroom and washing her hands, she pulled on her pants then tugged off her shirt so that she could put on her bra, either forgetting or not caring that the bedroom door was still open.
Ella: He was finished cleaning up, chewing on a stray bit of bacon and walking in. When he saw her naked, he let out a noise and turned to walk back out, presumably headed for the door.
Wing: Shade turned, surprised. "Halt, are you okay?" she called after him, fastening her bra and grabbing her shirt as she followed him. Her shirt wasn't on yet so he could see the odd burn scar that stretched from her right hip to her navel if he turned toward her.
Ella: "Are you proper?" he asked, stubbornly staring at the door.
Wing: She blinked. "What do you mean?"
Ella: "Dressed, are you dressed." Thunk. He started banging his head on the door.
Wing: "Oh, yeah. Why?" She pulled on her shirt as she spoke.
Ella: He turned, cupping his hands in front of his boxers. "I'm going to shower before we leave."
Wing: She tilted her head. "Are you okay?"
Ella: "I will be in about 5 minutes." He side stepped her and hurried away before he could give himself away.
Wing: She blinked then shrugged, going to get her socks, shoes, and hoodie on before flopping on the couch to wait.
Ella: He returned in about twenty minutes, dressed, hair dripping onto the collar of his shirt. "Got everything you need?"
Wing: She nodded, standing. "Are you okay now?" she asked in concern.
Ella: "Yep, just fine." He smiled, offering his arm with a little bow. He had only berated himself and taken a rather chilly shower.
Wing: She laughed, accepting his arm. "You know, I can get home on my own..."
Ella: "Just want to make sure you get there safe," he said, leading her downstairs, careful to lock the apartment and shop.
Wing: "Thanks." Normally she'd say that she could manage fine on her own, but she was feeling a little petty and was hoping that Kier would see. Maybe he'd get jealous or upset. Oh, who was she kidding? He probably wouldn't even care.
She looked up at Halt again. "You have a pawn shop?"
Ella: "Yep. Why? Didn't notice it last night?" He poked her side lightly as they walked down the street.
Wing: "I didn't think to ask." She squirmed a little when he poked her then poked him back.
Ella: "Ah, that's all right then." He secured his grip on her hand and let her lead the way to her apartment.
Wing: Shade smiled at Halt, closing her eyes and leaning her head against his shoulder, letting herself pretend for a little that this was Kier she was walking with.
It was a good length walk to get to the building she said she lived in and she pointed it out when they were nearing. "Hey, Halt?"
Ella: "Yeah Shade?" He paused to look at her curiously.
Wing: "Do you think it would be okay if I came by sometimes, just to talk or hang out?" she asked shyly. Having been yelled at or made fun of so many times for asking 'Are we friends?' made her hesitant to use that phrase.
Ella: He brightened. "I could use a few more friends," he said quietly, his grin widening.
Wing: She smiled brightly and hugged him suddenly and tightly.
Ella: He hugged her back, tilting her head back for a second light kiss. "Second best, right?" He kissed her forehead lightly. "Stay safe Shade."
Wing: She blushed a light pink. "Thanks Halt. You too." She watched him walk away before going into her building.
