A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian] Empty A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian]

(Ugh, I hate titles so much...)

"Goddammit," Keith grunted beneath his breath, banging his fist against Lisa's door in frustration. If he hadn't forgotten his cellphone when he visited her the day prior, he would have called to ask where she'd gone. The man sighed, taking a brief moment to regret being too lazy to turn around and go back for his phone when he realized he had left it yesterday. Perhaps, any other person could have waited, but Keith had that cellphone for one sole purpose: business. It was that fact alone that convinced him to attempt to break into her house.

Eyes scanning the area, Keith searched for anything he could use to pick the lock. Unfortunately, Lisa's stoop was spotless. He paused for a moment, shaking his head in frustration.

"I'll buy her a new window," he grumbled sardonically before walking around to the back side of the house. First, he attempted to open the back door, jiggling the knob. He also tried the windows to see if one might open, but they were all, unfortunately, locked. Sighing, Keith raised his arm, pulling it toward his other shoulder before ramming it into the windowpane. The glass shattered, leaving a small hole and, certainly, shards all over Lisa's floor. He would have to clean that up before he left. Shaking his head at the absurdity of what he was doing, Keith began to chip away more of the window so that he could crawl through.

A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian] Empty Re: A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian]

It was a rather nice night, enough so that Marian had decided against her normal peacoat and instead was just wearing one of her vests - both worked equally well to conceal the pistol she always had concealed in the small of her back. She had decided to go on one of her own patrols of the district, having grown a bit aggravated with her subordinates. Some of her more competent and promising members had vanished, dropping Fringe right back where they had started. And that on top of the damned curfew just made business even more difficult to tend to.

Turning the corner onto a familiar street, she paused as she spotted a tall man pounding on the door to an even more familiar house. Stopping and shifting into a shadow, she was pleased yet again with her mutation. After all, the ability to see twice as far and with half the light as most other people was a boon not to be over looked by someone with her weaponry preferences.

When he went around the back of the house, she broke into a light jog to follow him, her steps nearly silent on the concrete. Forgoing her bow, she slipped the collapsible baton she kept in her pocket into her hand and extended it with a quick flick of her wrist.

Rounding the first corner to the house showed he had moved on to the back and nearing the second corner allowed her to hear how he was knocking glass from a frame. From the sound of it, the window wasn't far from the corner, likely the one that led into the kitchen, so it wouldn't be difficult to surprise the trespasser.

Taking a moment to center herself, Marian acted, throwing herself around the corner low and lashing out with an upward slash that would normally land anywhere between mid hip and mid ribs.

(It's kind of hard to make posts long in fight scenes. :/)
A huff of wind left him when he felt something strike his flank. Impulsively, his body folded in the direction of the strike, but he was quick to recover. Keith had a split-second to steal a glance at his attacker before he knew she would attack again. He was somewhat surprised to see a slender female rather than the man he expected. She was strong, but, then, she would be—her eyes weren't natural.

Gritting his teeth, Keith glared more to the fact that he could never accomplish anything without interruption than the woman herself. Though he would have preferred to explain himself rather than fight, Keith knew he didn't yet have the time for that. So he kneed her in the throat. His side was dully throbbing, but he was more irritated than injured.

It only took a quick shift and twist to avoid the blow, the fabric of his jeans just barely grazing over her skin as she moved. He was good, but not quick enough.

Her eyes flickered up to his face so she could remember him for later since he wasn't wearing a pinion and so wasn't one of hers (of course, even if he had been, she wouldn't have let him off lightly). Recognizing him, Marian aborted her follow-up, flipping her baton in her hand so that it rested along her forearm and she disengaged, moving out of range so that she could speak.

"Mathias, you dumb fuck. You're not any more intelligent now than you were in school, are you? Why the hell are you trying to break into Lisa's house?" she demanded, setting her empty hand on her hip as she glared up at him, the baton hanging loosely at her side. Her normal speech patterns had vanished in the face of her irritation.

Aside from letting a blow land on her just being embarrassing, she remembered that he was physically capable in school and judging by the looks of him now, he was as strong now, if not stronger than, as he had been ten years ago. And the last thing she needed was a crushed windpipe on top of her normal anemia.

(I just realized that him breaking the window kind of took away their reason not to separate... But I have a plan to improvise! xD)
Keith glowered at the woman, quirking a brow. His eyes roamed up and down her body, trying to locate some sort of clue as to who she was. There was that vague sense of familiarity, but he couldn't put a name to her face.

"Do I know you?" he inquired gruffly, ignoring her insult. He was never one to take anything to heart, especially not from some lady he barely, if even, knew.

Keith sighed, knowing the explanation as to why he was breaking and entering into his friends house would sound incredibly stupid to the woman. However, she had no idea what sort of vital information was on that phone."I'm breakin' in because I left my phone yesterday, and I have no idea where she went." Keith had to admit, that explanation did make him feel like a magnificent dumbass, though he was certain his cause for breaking her window was justified.

"I'm gonna replace it," he sighed with a shrug of his shoulders.

Closing her eyes momentarily so that she didn't give in and roll them like she wanted to (it wouldn't be professional, no matter that he was, somewhat, of an old friend). Opening her eyes again, Marian gave Keith a flat look. "Marian. Lisa's friend. She tried to set us up on a blind date in your senior year of school?" she said, tone gaining the hint of a questioning inflection toward the end.

"If Lisa is not home now, then she is likely with her boyfriend," she said, pulling out her phone to give the small blonde a call anyway. When it went to voicemail, she just hung up again and pocketed the phone again. "She is with her boyfriend," she confirmed, stepping up to the back door to use her key to unlock it before looking at Keith and raising an eyebrow. "You can still crawl in the window if you like," she added, letting herself in to the house and the door open for him to follow.

When he was inside, she looked at him then gestured to the one closet that held the broom and other cleaning supplies. "Clean it up. I know where she keeps the stuff people leave behind. What does your phone look like?"

A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian] Empty Re: A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian]

Post by Keith Wed Jul 31, 2013 12:34 am

(For the sake of the the plot, Marian can't find his phone because Lisa took it with her with the intention of returning it to him personally, okay?)
"Marian. Lisa's friend. She tried to set us up on a blind date in your senior year of school?"

Keith had to think for a moment more, but the memories eventually flooded back to him. He could vaguely remember Lisa begging him to meet her friend, but he'd already had his eyes set on a particular lady for awhile. Of this, he informed Lisa, but the girl had always been determined and persistent. She went ahead and arranged the date, but Keith never showed up. He was fairly certain, however, that Marian had only to find she'd been stood up. Keith nearly cringed at the memory, but he repressed it, feigning nonchalance. He didn't want to have any sort of argument over something that had happened over a decade ago. However. if Marian even remembered, she wasn't showing any sign of it.

"If Lisa is not home now, then she is likely with her boyfriend."

Keith sneered. If Lisa wasn't home, he knew she was with her boyfriend. Even if he made her very happy, Keith couldn't stand the man. There was simply something off about him; Keith couldn't place it, but he knew he didn't trust him. Lisa might accuse him of jealousy if he said anything, though. The urge was always tempting, but he kept biting his tongue.

Keith watched Marian put away her phone after failing to contact Lisa. Then, he followed her inside dejectedly, scowling at her snarky comment. Of course, if he had known someone would be around to let him in, he wouldn't have busted the window open. And if the situation could have waited, he wouldn't have minded. However, Keith had a drop off coming up, and it was of the utmost importance that he didn't miss the date.

"Clean it up. I know where she keeps the stuff people leave behind. What does your phone look like?"

Rolling his eyes, Keith retrieved the broom and dust pan from the closet and proceeded to sweep up every little crystal of broken glass while Marian went to retrieve his phone.

"Black flip phone," he called over his shoulder.

She remembered the day well if only for the amusement she had felt over Lisa's irritation with both of her friends. Marian hadn't intended to go either, but the small blonde hadn't left her much choice and had physically brought her there (she was surprisingly strong for her size and always had been - and it certainly helped now for when she needed to move her patients about). Lisa's seething had been interesting and Marian had been disappointed that she missed the man getting chewed out.

She also hadn't missed the look on his face at the mention of the doctor's beau, but hadn't decided if she was curious enough to ask about it. She debated it as she looked for his phone, frowning when she didn't find it on the first look through. Even though she was certain she didn't miss it, she checked a second and a third time before returning to the kitchen empty-handed.

"What is the number to your phone. It is not likely, but she may have put it somewhere else." They could try calling it to see if they could hear the ringing or, if he had it on silent, the vibrations as it moved.

A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian] Empty Re: A Somewhat Helpful Hand [Keith, Marian]

Keith carefully relayed the number from his memory, pausing between each small group of numbers to allow her to dial the numbers in. However, he already thought the attempt useless. If he knew Lisa—and he did—she had taken the phone with her. She probably intended to return it to him personally, which was just an excuse to visit him. Keith couldn't figure out why she liked him so much; he was fairly certain that he was the shittiest friend a person could ask for.

Once he finished sweeping the largest shards of glass into the dustpan, Keith carefully searched the kitchen floor for any stray particles. His vision wasn't the best, but he scanned the tile as thoroughly as he could. He would just have to do his best and hope that he didn't leave anything big enough to hurt the woman if she walked over it. Aside from a few tiny crystals gathered against the cabinets that he swept up, Keith couldn't find anything particularly dangerous.

Dumping the glass into the trashcan once he found it, Keith returned the cleaning utensils to their proper location. The man then attempted to locate some tape so that he could secure a garbage bag over the broken window until it could be replaced, but the way Lisa organized everything, while neat, confused the hell out of Keith, who kept everything strewn about in random places that he just happened to remember. After searching several drawers and cabinets, he failed to find any form of adhesive tape. Sighing, the man shrugged. He would replace the window as soon as he possibly could, so, hopefully, something would keep the rain and bugs at bay.

"You find it?"

"No," she answered calmly, slipping her phone into her pocket once more. One delicate eyebrow raised slightly as she watched him search for whatever it was. "Am I correct to assume that your residence is in South district?"

Spotting the black bag he had pulled out, it wasn't a difficult conclusion to reach that he was looking for tape. And since it was easier to just get the roll rather than try and tell him where it was, she just moved over to the same closet the broom had been in. Her eyes flickered over the shelves and landed on the small toolbox that had been shoved haphazardly into a corner. Marian grabbed the box and carried it out to put on the island, popping it open to pull out the partly used roll of duct tape and toss it to Keith. She couldn't care if he caught it or not so she didn't bother to warn him. Though, while it would be amusing if he was struck by it, she was sure that he'd start to grumble and growl at her. And Lisa wouldn't be happy to hear that two of her closest friends had managed to get into a physical altercation in her kitchen.

Keith turned just in time to see something silver flying toward his head. He snatched it out of the air effortlessly, shooting a halfhearted glare at the woman. He then made quick work of masking the broken window, stretching the bag over it before biting off pieces of tape to secure it in place. Once he was finished, the bag puffed in and out as if it was breathing, stirred by the window. He could only imagine how startled Lisa would be to find it. As hilarious as her face would be, the typically remorseless male felt guilty. After all, the woman had done a lot for him. He never really intended to repay her by forcing more and more favors on her and destroying her property.

Sighing, Keith accepted that his repair job was adequate and moved to put away the tape. He didn't dignify Marian with any eye-contact during the entire process, practically pretending she wasn't even there. Once he was finished, the man turned away from her, staring idly out the window above the sink.

"Yeah," he breathed in response to her question, tapping his fingers on the counter as he thought about his phone. He reasoned that Lisa must have taken it with her with the intention of returning it, but, apparently, she had gotten sidetracked on the way. Keith cursed; there was a limited number of places she could be, but he needed to find her and fast, lest he let his most recent deal fall through. Financially, he couldn't afford that, and neither could his reputation. Doing his own freelance smuggling without any affiliation was becoming more difficult, and the last thing he needed was someone going around badmouthing his professionalism.

"So what now? he breathed.

Crossing her arms loosely over her chest as she watched him, Marian cocked one hip out to the side. That was a rather valid question, but she just shrugged a shoulder. "I am not sure. Did you plan to break someone else's windows as well, or is Lisa just special?" This time, she did roll her eyes at him before shaking her head. "Never mind that. Do you need your phone tonight?" She assumed so since he had been trying to break in, no matter how inelegantly.

Before he could answer, she turned to start for the street, jerking her head for him to follow. "This way. I know where her boyfriend lives." She was still somewhat on the fence about the man as well, though she knew what it was that he did, that apparently set off the instincts of her companion.

That actually reminded her, she should pay a visit to this 'Halt' and make it very clear to him just what would happen if he caused Lisa to be hurt in any way.

Keith gave a melodramatic eye roll in response to the woman's scornful remark, though he wasn't turned for her to see it.

"I need it before tonight," he corrected firmly, turning on his heel. When she turned away and jerked her head for him to follow, Keith let an impatient sigh flow from his nostrils, following her begrudgingly. Why did everything have to be so complicated? Something random always arose to hinder him. Besides that, he wasn't all that happy about visiting Lisa's boyfriend either. Whether he was wrong or not, Keith assumed the man was a cheating bastard and, thusly, hated his guts. Keith tolerated him for Lisa's sake, but the smuggler was always itching to knock his teeth down his throat.

Marian turned her head to give him a bland look over her shoulder for a few paces before facing forward again. "What time, exactly? Seeing as it is already after dusk, saying 'before tonight' isn't particularly valid nor is it specific. Do you need it before midnight? Before two or ten? When do you need it?" she asked, her normal dull tone shifting into one that showed her annoyance. It was a simple question that she was sure was going to aggravate him, assuming her tone didn't.

Reaching the street again, she paused long enough for Keith to fall into step next to her before starting to walk again, her arms hanging loosely at her sides. To almost any observer, it might appear that they were together and seemingly easy targets, but anyone who acted on that delusion would be quickly corrected of that assumption. Of course, anyone who could see the scowl on Keith's face would likely think twice anyway.

She glanced over at him when she saw a flicker of movement come from his direction.
