[Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade] Empty [Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade]

Post by Nathan Mon Sep 09, 2013 2:04 am

Some nights, all Nathan wanted to do was sit down on the cement, take off his mask, and rub his eyes until the dumb, fake images went away. Tonight was one of those nights, and as like the nights before he resisted the urge. Not only would it be incredibly stupid, there was work to be done – when had he gotten so busy? –  and he’d never get anything done if he stopped to whine about his restitution.

Still, it could be worse. And it definitely would be, by the time he finished his rounds. There was at least one client in the West District, and he would rather be dead than caught on the Metro with his current outfit. It wasn’t nearly so practical in light as it was on darkened streets.

He sighed softly, shifting his bag and making sure the straps were secure as he glided through the alleys. The graffiti, almost awe-inspiring in the day and when he didn’t feel like a stoner – not that he would really know, since he never made the mistake of testing out such deliveries for himself – was more aggravating now. Nathan pointedly looked away from the colors and words swirling together, forming blinking eyes and gaping maws. He did flinch just once, when a claw reached out to rest on his shoulder, but the mirage faded the moment he pulled away and twisted around to glare at it.

Only for another to appear, of course, but hopefully the other hallucinations would know their place.

Clicking his tongue once with irritation, he returned to his task, navigating the alleyway with ease. He was close to the rendezvous now, just around two more corners. It would’ve been easier to simply show up on the spot, but he was willing to walk a block if it meant he could hide his power for another night. Standard clientele, at least, didn’t need to know that he was a harbinger.

Out of habit, he tugged at his jacket collar, adjusted his mask, and just neatened up in general. Appearances were important, even when the reputation he was protecting was one associated with delivering drugs to dealers or users in the middle of the night. Even more so now that his work was getting less menial.

He could see the figure now, and he deliberately hardened his steps a fraction so they’d hear his approach more easily. No need to unnecessarily frighten a customer, after all.

Nathan stopped several yards away, tilting his head slightly.
“You wouldn’t happen to be a miss Coral, would you?” he asked idly.

Huffing softly, Shade leaned back against the brick building on one side of the alley she was waiting in. She hated doing anything involving drugs, with good reason in her opinion, but it wasn't like she could tell the higher ranked members of Network where to stick it - especially since it would likely get back to Haus and no one knew how he'd react considering how little he interacted with them. So, the best thing to do was suck it up and keep her dislike to a minimum.

“You wouldn’t happen to be a miss Coral, would you?”

She had already looked up at the scuff of footsteps so his voice didn't surprise her at all. She was happy for the shadows cast by her hood and the goggles she wore since it covered the expressive eye roll and look of disgust at the name. Coral? Really? She hadn't been able to ask who had thought that up (probably Tam, now that she thought about it), but did they really think 'Coral' was fitting in any way?

Shaking it off, Shade let her arms drop and pushed away from the wall. "Yes, that's me," was her answer. She tugged out the burn phone she had been given to check the time. Her eyebrows rose when she saw that he was actually a bit early. "Good timing. Do you have the product?" she asked, putting the phone away again. They could get into the real reason for this meeting shortly, and it wasn't because of the drugs.

Nathan grinned, despite the fact that his mask already did so for him. “Of course.” He loosened the bag strap just enough for him to bring it around to his side, carefully drawing out the prepared package. He kept one eye on ‘Coral’, and his ears open for any suspicious – well, relatively suspicious, from his view – activity. It wouldn’t be the first time someone tried to jump him during business.

With practiced ease, he resealed the bag and returned it to its rightful position, having taken only a handful of seconds for the entire process. In his other hand, he hefted the package up near his shoulder. It wasn’t that heavy, really, but he’d still be glad to see it go. The less merchandise he had to carry around and possibly lose or get caught with, the better.

“I hope you don’t mind,” he started, not actually caring at all about whether 'Coral' minded or not, “but I do need the rest of the payment before I hand this over.” He shrugged. “Precautions, you know?” Though he did require a fee upfront, most of his profit came from this stage in transactions. And from experience, he’d found that people were more lucky to try and cheat him than the other way around.

Such cases happened less frequently, now that he had a few more years to handle deals and build a reputation. Still, old habits die hard, and he’d rather walk off now and sell to someone else than knock out a client.

Her lips quirked in a hollow smile and she nodded, pulling an envelope from her hoodie pocket and extending it toward him. "Right here." She didn't make any move to hand it to him, wanting to make him approach her; not that it actually had credits in it (those were in her jeans pocket).

"I do have other business to discuss with you though," she said, smile sharpening just a little when he was closer. "You really should be commended for expanding your business so quickly and professionally, but you've also irritated some... rather influential people," she said, tilting her head a bit at him, watching him closely. "More specifically, my Boss. We'd like to extend an... invitation toward you. Namely to join us because it would be in your best interests to do so." She really wasn't in the mood to be more polite than that. And he was well within her range so she wasn't overly concerned with if he turned to run (which, she acknowledged, could likely have been why she was the one sent to do this).

[Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade] Empty Re: [Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade]

Post by Nathan Tue Sep 10, 2013 10:26 pm

Nathan stepped forward, watching for any sign of treachery. The paint on the wall behind her twisted mockingly at his efforts, forming a toothy grin like that of his namesake.

He only just took the envelope, weighing it in one hand and frowning slightly out of concentration when ‘Coral’ mentioned business. Other business. The words only made his frown deeper, effectively distracting him from the envelope. If the ‘business’ had nothing to do with setting up another delivery, chances were that it would not be pleasant. Moments later, he was proved right.

“Ah, so it’s that,” he murmured. He’d known that he worked in Network’s – because who else would approach him for this? – territory, known from the moment he started smuggling. He worked in all the districts, sure, but it was only right that the smuggling kings and queens would care more than the Guild and Fringe. He’d only hoped that they’d keep ignoring him as the larger gangs usually did for independent criminals. Too bad, he thought with a hint of regret, that he hadn’t accounted for if his business grew.

Without turning his head, he checked the outermost bounds of his vision, now more concerned by the possibility of others nearby.
“I’m sorry, but you must understand,” he began, careful to keep his voice even and pleasant as though she hadn’t just threatened him. Had it been a less…precarious situation, he would’ve bristled and given her a piece of his mind.

But no, business calls for some degree of professionalism.
“I’ve worked perfectly fine on my own, and I feel like I have more to lose in joining than staying away.” He shrugged. “You know what I mean.” Obeying a chain of command, being forced into whatever tasks they had for members, getting caught in gang warfare… Not to mention, the gang would probably want a cut of his profits. He’d heard of such rules on bounties and arena betting.

He tilted his head at her, a deliberate and almost challenging motion, despite its seeming innocence.
“But convince me, miss Coral – is that even your name? – and tell me why I should take up your offer. Preferably with a reason other than ‘we won’t kill you if you do’, please.” He took a small step away as he spoke, to give both of them some breathing room, and to see her reaction. It wasn’t as though he was poised to run. His power made such obvious body language unnecessary.

Even as he thought of fleeing, however, he sized her up. Normally, he might consider starting a fight (but not for long – her clothes hid her build and probably a weapon, if not several. Not to mention, he couldn’t check her eyes to see what he was dealing with), but her claimed affiliation was enough to stop him in his tracks.

He sighed internally. Why did gangs always have to make things so complicated?

Shade huffed out a small breath through her nose, gesturing at the drugs. "First, put those aside. I'm sure you don't want to fail to follow through on business with us," she said calmly. "And second, you don't honestly think we're the only ones who have noticed you, do you? We're certainly the best at what you do, which is one good reason, but we aren't the only ones who do." Which was rather obvious considering Cheshire himself.

She tilted her head a little to the right, a very small smile on her lips. "Wouldn't you prefer to have some form of aid to call on when someone less polite than I comes to discuss this very subject with you?" she asked, smile widening a bit.

"Naturally, you're perfectly welcome to turn us down, but don't think that we'll go back to ignoring you. We can make things very difficult for you; even without harming you." She straightened after saying that, letting her smile vanish as she held herself ready, fully expecting him to act rather than talk at this point.

[Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade] Empty Re: [Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade]

Post by Nathan Thu Sep 12, 2013 11:24 pm

Nathan glared at the woman as he took a step to the left, setting down the package on top of a dumpster before returning to his original spot with the other open alley to his back. He propped his hands on his hips, lightly brushing his thumb over a knife in his pocket. “Can’t you stop threatening me for five seconds and so we can discuss this like normal people?” he snapped. He grew up on the streets and even he managed to be more polite than this lady. Well, usually.

He scowled, decidedly displeased with his lack of options. The paint-mouth actively (though thankfully, silently) laughing at him wasn’t helping.

Really, he hadn’t needed her to spell out how much the Network could fuck him over. It just helped (or rather, didn’t) to hear it said out loud. There were really only two choices, and one half-not-really choice.

“Since this whole thing’s already strayed from the civilized route,” he drawled, his voice barely calmer than before as he pushed back his unease about what was to happen, “we may as well just settle this like thugs. I’m sure you and your people can understand – you win, I join. I win, I get to keep my freedom.” He paused. “Until you guys start bothering me again, which will inevitably happen, and I can accept that.” Delay, delay, delay. If he flat out refused, he was screwed. If he could hold out for a little bit and let them try again later, he’d at least feel better about himself. Of course, even if the woman agreed then lost – and at the moment, he wasn’t sure that she would for either – they’d likely just send more people next time.

As long as he could deal with it later, and have time to pull things together. Mostly, try to pacify his sister about what a horrible turn his life has taken or will take.

Without waiting for her to respond, he took a step back while drawing and throwing two knives from each hand, one aimed at her chest and the other at her stomach. He didn’t think she wouldn’t dodge – there’s no way Network would’ve sent her if she couldn’t fight – though if she didn’t he’d have a slightly bigger problem with explaining to Network why he killed their recruiter.

"I haven't made any threats," she said pleasantly. Plenty of implications sure, but no actual threats. Well, aside from saying they could make things difficult, but that was rather vague anyway and could mean any number of things. "Not yet anyway," she added, tone idle.

Her eyes widened behind her dark lenses even as her body reflexively turned and dodged away from the attack. Expression pulling into a scowl, she shoved her right hand under her left sleeve and flipped open the catch with her thumb. The length of wire she used as a weapon uncoiled, falling about her feet. It was just a quick flick of the wrist for her to get the sharpened weight going in a tight circle, giving off a soft and somewhat high pitched whistling sound as it moved.

If he wanted to do things that way, then fine. She'd wait for things to escalate a bit more before using her power. Instead, she swung her arm around and eased her grip on the wire, throwing the two pound weight at his chest.

[Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade] Empty Re: [Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade]

Post by Nathan Sat Sep 14, 2013 6:58 pm

He leapt back, the weight just missing him as he bit back a curse. In the darkness, it was nigh impossible to follow her weapon with sight, though he could certainly hear it. Even so, those were two more pieces stacked in her favor, the other being her range.

He pulled a switchblade from his pocket and flicked it open in one smooth motion as he readied for her next move, his mind working quickly to assess the fight. Here was the problem – the alley wasn’t big enough for movement and evasion, and the (moving) spray paint made it difficult to judge the brick buildings’ usefulness in maneuvering.

Really, a part of him drawled, what was he expecting? He took another step back, instinctively reaching for the comfort of his power, though not using it. Usually, he would’ve taken off running by now, far enough to get out of sight and vanish into the void. Given the terms of the fight, that didn’t seem like a smart move. His other choice was, of course, to use his power to get behind her – but then, if he didn’t incapacitate (or kill, if it came to that) her fast enough… Well, what else could he do?

Just as he decided on his plan of action, he realized he’d waited a moment too long and slid back to one side out of the way of her next attack, wincing as his shoulder hit the wall. He pushed away from it quickly, sprinting down the alley away from her as though he headed for the open street. As useful as the space out there would be, it wasn’t his goal. Instead, around the first corner he took advantage of the short moment he was out of sight, diving into a shadow and doubling back immediately to surface behind his target, swinging his blade hilt-first at her head.

((Uhh, not sure if that’s okay – tell me if you’d rather me cut out her second attack or basically anything in the last paragraph))

Shade watched him for a few moments, wondering if he was going to use that knife, before deciding that he had been thinking for too long and that he apparently needed a reminder that there was a more pressing matter to consider. Namely, her and the weapon she was wielding.

Shifting her weight, Shade threw the blunt end at him. She had a couple of seconds to debate using his power to redirect it at him even after he got out of the way, but he took off before she could. She broke into a run after him, gathering her power to either attack or defend, with an inclination toward defense as he vanished around the corner.

Since she had some shadows gathered in a vague, and invisible in the gloom, 'fog' around herself, she felt when his arm crossed into range and so ducked and turned, catching his arm with the wire of her weapon. Turning in a quick circle without letting go, she got the wire around his arm so he couldn't flee again. Rather than press her advantage, Shade just looked at him and wondered what he'd do next.

"Nice trick."

He made a soft sound of surprise when she caught him – he hadn’t thought he’d made much noise, but then some people just had that level of awareness. How annoying. On the other hand, he was more surprised by the fact that she didn’t immediately kick him in the groin, or punch him (though with his mask, he could see why she wouldn’t).

“Nice trick.”

He scoffed, muttering a sarcastic ‘thanks’ as he pulled experimentally on the wire. It’d be easier just to stab her at this point, but the last thing he wanted was for blood to occupy his dreams and hallucinations for the next god-knows-how-long. Instead, he made a small step to his left and immediately pivoted on his right foot, bringing his caught arm (and wincing as the wire tightened) away from her, aiming to pull her forward and drag her off balance. As he did so, he swung his left leg up, using the force of his turn to try and knee her in her side, while hoping to push her off balance, perhaps enough to hit the ground.

She grunted, not expecting him to turn things to his advantage. Most people tried to get away, even if it meant that they were going to be losing a layer of skin in the process. She let go of one end of her weapon so that she wasn't pulled off balance too badly, but then his knee was hitting her, drawing a grunt from the brunet.

Shade was relatively sure that if she hadn't let go, he would have cracked one of her ribs, if not broken it outright (he would have hit with just the right angle for that).

Stumbling from the blow, she did almost fall; would have if she hadn't used her power to steady herself. It probably looked like she had pulled something out of the Matrix considering how she half-fell then straightened again. And if it wasn't for the lack of pressure on his arm from the wire wrapped around it, the move could have been passed off as pulling herself back up with it.

Shifting, Shade swung one of the hanging weights at Cheshire's head.

The way she managed to avoid an unfortunate meeting with the ground was not missed even as he jerked his arm free, wincing slightly and flexing the limb to get blood flowing. The woman, ‘Coral’ or whatever her actual name or alias was, was definitely a harbinger. What sort of power she had, though, was still up in the air – for every application, after all, there could be innumerable mutations, a fact that he normally liked when it helped him. Now, not so much.

No time to ponder about it, though, or even register much beyond “oh great she’s a harbinger”. She moved, and he dropped, though not fast enough as the weight clipped the top of his mask with a sharp crack.  He flinched at the force and the sound, though was grateful for the fact that it hadn’t been his forehead that took the blow.

He placed one gloved hand on the ground, using it to hold him up and as the point he pivoted on as he swung both legs around at her knees, ready to use his other hand to catch himself and spring back onto his feet whether he completed the move or not.

Hm. Well, that was interesting. His mask was nicely solid, much like she had heard some stories about the Guild's current and most recent bosses wearing. It was a smart choice though since it functioned like armor. It was also aggravating to be going against since it prevented a quick dazing.

Shade jumped up and back, tucking her knees toward her chest to try and get her feet clear. She succeeded, barely, and only due to her experience fighting rather than speed. He was certainly much faster than she was.

She landed again and took a couple of steps back to bleed off the momentum and to put some distance between them, straightening to meet his eyes, her hood having fallen off by this point. "Not bad, but is that all you've got?" she asked, jerking her weights up with a sharp motion. Letting the clasp slide to the blunt end, she hefted it up and around, swinging it in tight circles to build up speed quickly. "Well? I'm waiting." Absently she wondered if he was as hot-headed as most of the guys she knew.

He landed neatly, as she backed off, spinning that annoying wire of hers. Nathan would’ve rolled his eyes at her taunt, but he’d have to look away from her to do so. “So am I,” he drawled, gesturing nonchalantly with one hand and the knife it held. But if she insisted – well, they weren’t going to get any younger.

Darting forward, he twisted to one side as she swung the weight horizontally towards him. He flung his empty left hand, wincing as the weapon caught and the weight caused the wire to wrap itself several times around his lower arm, the same one that had been caught earlier. He shifted his hand just enough to grab the metal before it fell away, keeping a hold of it as he closed the distance between them. One more stride, and he tackled her. Not shoulder first, like a smart person, but with his left arm around her torso –

And down the rabbit hole they went.

He barely traveled a block and a half, but took the most serpentine path he could on the way before surfacing through a wall shadow, letting go only to turn and pin her to the wall with the same arm, wire and all, across her collarbone. With the other hand, he had a knife, and knives tended to be put at people’s throats, so that’s what he did.

Well, he tried to do all that, at least, because he knew people were disoriented by his power, even if only for a moment for those less prone to motion sickness. So, why wouldn’t she?

What the hell was he doing? If he was thinking of using her weapon to drag her close, she could always let go. But, no, he was charging her.

Shade had just started to shift to the side, trying to get out of the way, but like she had noticed earlier, he was faster. And then they were somewhere else. She didn't know where or how exactly, but it was clear that he had teleported them.

She hated teleportation powers so much. Ren was the only one who hadn't used his against her, but after Alice, she just couldn't be comfortable with them. And now this?

Cheshire was still moving to pin her when her momentary shock wore off. Then, she got angry.

Flipping her hand so that her palm was facing him, a mass of shadows grew between them, forcing him away. She didn't really care if he hit the far wall or not, nor did she care that her wire went with him. Pushing off the wall, she took a couple of steps toward him, the shadows seemingly melting away to their normal positions once more. "That. Was a bad idea."

Normally, powers didn’t faze him – if his restitution was good for anything, it was making him used to shit that normal people didn’t have to deal with. Like with everything about him, there were a few exceptions.

This was one of them.

He barely registered that she’d shoved him into the other wall, confusion and fear swamping his mind. He didn’t have it in him to even be grateful that his mask concealed his expression as he stared at her like she would dissolve into a thousand imps and the walls would reach out with hands of brick and –

No, no, no, he had to calm down. No, he hadn’t overused his power. No, he hadn’t just lost his grip on reality (though what oddities he did recognize as his restitution said otherwise). And no, it wasn’t him imagining her moving shadows at a whim, like, like they were just some sort of plaything. Like they weren't his saviors and tormentors. She was, after all, a harbinger, and quite a real one too.

He straightened up as she advanced, leaning against the wall for as long as he could get away with as he fumbled then pulled out a throwing knife, as he’d dropped his switchblade during his internal freak-out.
“Well,” he started, his mouth irritatingly dry as he was not quite recovered. “Well, now we know. Each other’s power, that is. Isn’t that just great?”

Shade glowered at him, shifting her weight a little. It was clear to her that he was scared, having spotted the way his hands were shaking. Twitching a couple fingers, his switchblade seemingly sprang to her hand, the tendril of shadow that carried it nearly invisible in the gloom.

"Oh, it's absolutely wonderful," she said sarcastically. "Don't think that your little trick is going to work a second time," she added lowly, absently toying with the knife, rotating it in her fingers. The only reason she was able to do that with the apparent ease she currently was was simply due to how she wasn't paying attention to it. If it was a normal time, she'd have dropped it by now.

"So, do you really want to continue this, or would you rather just agree?" she asked, raising an eyebrow over her goggles. She wasn't sure what he'd do next, or what she would for that matter, just that she was getting annoyed by all of this and just wanted to go home and crawl into bed.

[Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade] Empty Re: [Network Recruitment] Sharing the Shadows [Cheshire and Shade]

Post by Nathan Sat Oct 05, 2013 1:43 am

His gaze flicked to the knife, his eyes narrowing slightly as he bit back a grumble. That was his, damnit. He knew that it was a petty reason he came up with to add to the list of annoyances, but he just didn’t like how she used her power (Shadow manipulation…shadowkinesis? Umbrakinesis? Shadowmancy? …Shadowmancy.) so casually. She had to be a type 1 harbinger, to not care about her restitution ramping up with each use. Unless, of course, she was a type 2 with an unobtrusive restitution, not that he’d met someone with both. God, no, he couldn’t think about that right now – there were things to do besides cultivating a deeper distaste for the girl.

“I don’t think you’ve technically won, really,” he started, carefully pushing down his emotions so his hands would stop trembling. “But,” he continued with a shrug, lowering his blade in resignation, “I’ll concede, if only as a favor from one freak to another.” For a brief moment, his lips twisted into a bitter grin, one of course hidden behind the mocking one painted on his mask. “But don’t think I’m doing this willingly, either.”

He tucked away the blade, then held his hand out for the one she held. As he did, he watched her carefully, still suspecting a betrayal at any moment. “Do I get to know your actual alias now, or am I supposed to believe that ‘Coral’ is a fitting name for anyone your – our? – lovely gang would send out as a recruiter?”

Even as he spoke, he could feel a new unease settling in his chest. There were plenty of reasons, both practical and personal, for not wanting to join a gang, and here he was.

Well…he’d think over those reasons later. He'd have enough of time for it. For now, he looked at her expectantly, seeing if she’d actually give him any instructions or details on the gang – like the name of the gang, since she’d never even said it, though they both knew it, of course. But other things too, politics and how not to get killed by supposed allies, and other practical things. If she just left at this point without a single bit of information, he’d consider just lying down and letting the wolves eat him (not that there were wolves, real or hallucinated, but now having thought of it he’d only added fuel to the latter. Oh, damnit).

Willingly? Did he really think that most people joined a gang willingly? "You'd be one of many joining for some reason or other rather than simply because you wanted to," she grumbled, closing his knife before stepping forward to hand it to him rather than use her power or toss it.

She shrugged a little, slipping her hands into her hoodie pocket so she didn't start to fidget with something or other and ruin the illusion of herself she had crafted. "I'm Shade. 'Coral' seemed a bit stupid to me as well, but we've got some asses in the gang. And welcome to The Network. It's actually really not that bad." She turned a little, nodding her head to the side in invitation for him to walk with her. "Come on. I'll buy you dinner while we talk." It was the least she could do after all of these... theatrics. Of course, she half-expected him to argue over it, but it didn't stop her from starting back to where they had originally met. "Either way, I need to get the drugs. When I've got them, I'll give you your full payment." Assuming they were still there, of course. If not, well, they'd just have to deal with her giving him some credits anyway.
