To say that Windhall hadn't been pleased when he came up with this idea was an understatement; if he hadn't distracted the tiny man, August probably would have ended up with a cane-induced headache and sore roots from angry hairpulling.

Though, it wasn't as though the Father didn't have a reason for his anger.... most of the time, people were smart enough to not walk headlong into the headquarters of a big gang. Especially Solstice, if you lived in the South District. And yet, here August was, a block away from the tagged warehouse that held Solstice, a beat-up backpack from his high-school days on his back, trenchcoat on, pensively staring in the direction of the building.

Whelp. At least he'd said goodbye to the kids and Esteban beforehand.

So thinking, he slung his backpack off of his shoulders, unzipping it and reaching inside, first withdrawing a heavy, clear sphere apparently composed of some sort of plastic, a wooden sphere, and four wheels.

Then he furrowed his brows, touched each of the objects in front of him, and focused, reshaping each of them, sticking them together, atoms and molecules rearranging themselves with his power, until he had an odd, wheeled contraption in front of him, consisting of a large sheet of bulletproof glass somehow melded to a plank, which was somehow melded to four wheels.

August grinned, obviously pleased with himself, then reached into his backpack for one more thing before slinging it onto his shoulders: a plain white mask, shaped for his face, which he tied on, flipping up the hood of his hoodie, gave the wheeled contraption in front of him an experimental kick, sending it rolling down the street.

As for the door, when he and his wheeling shield reached it, August reached outwards, the bulletproof glass yeilding for him, touched the cargo way's metal portal, and made it be somewhere else with a gentle surge of power.

He grinned in the faces of the startled Solstice members revealed (even though they couldn't see it).

"Hey. I wanna talk to your boss."

And then the gunfire started.

It wasn't often he heard gunshots fired in his own base.

Chimera raised his head from where he was bent over a sleek black flip-phone, quirking an eyebrow at the small group of foot soldiers that hovered nervously nearby. They seemed torn between sticking near him and running off toward the excitement (or running away, Chimera noted, catching a glimpse of the darkening patch soaking one's pants).

Truthfully, the warehouse base wasn't even the remotest bit secret. The gang came and went in broad daylight, and members felt stupidly safe beneath the broad, powerful name of Solstice. Not even the police dared touch the place without a really damn good reason--and Chimera never gave them a damn good reason.

Still, that didn't prevent rockheaded idiots from barging in every now and then. Chimera snapped his phone shut.

"Well?" he said, and the sound of his voice sent the group of men snapping to attention. "Don't you have something you should be doing?"

With sputtering apologies, the henchmen scurried off toward the entrance.

Scowling, Chimera turned back to his phone.

He kept moving, looking for the distinctive hair and facial tattoo of a certain boss, both his hands held out to his sides, touching the pane of glass, sealing up shatters with little bursts of focus and energy. The gunmen weren't too difficult to deal with--or ignore, rather; most of them seemed too startled or afraid to actually come up and tackle him--but he couldn't deny that they were wasting ammo.

Maybe they could salvage the bullets falling from his armor. August stomped one foot down, transferring his focus from his shield to the ground--the concrete floor was certainly one piece, and certainly manipulable; with a shift of his weight and a twist of his foot, the floor bubbled upwards, moving and shifting, tossing around gunmen like toys before flowing back to a flat surface.

August kept moving and looking in the quiet breathing moment he'd created.

The gunfire continued. Chimera gave a considering hum. His eyes flickered past the empty shelf that separated his corner from the rest of the storage facility. The warehouse itself was massive, divided into various spaces through steel pillars and various stacks of boxes.

A harbinger, then, if they'd lasted this long in such an open area. A harbinger with the ability to create a shield, if the sound of richocheting bullets was anything to go by.

Chimera glowered. Like Winter.

The floor rumbled in the distance, cracking and trembling. Alarmed shouts echoed off the walls.

Not Winter, then. A different kind of manipulator.

Chimera breathed an irritated sigh. Manipulators were the worst. He dropped his phone into his left breastpocket and straightened from his leaning stance, rounding the corner and into view.

Time for some damage control.

August was starting to think that the boss wasn't even home, that he'd picked a bad day to storm the Bastille, so to speak, but movement caught the man's attention, and he turned his head to spy a specific head of hair and facial tattoo. Orange, check. Scorpion, check.

The man strolled to a stop a respectable distance from Solstice's boss, moved his hands, the bulletproof shield mending its wounds and unfolding to guard the back that was turned towards the rest of the warehouse, and August stuck his hands in the pocket of his hoodie and smiled, hidden as it was.

"Hey! Boss Chimera! I wanna join your gang--I think I've proved myself. Got room for me?"

His men immediately stopped shooting the moment he emerged, lowering their guns to stare uneasily at the wasted bullets littering the warehouse floor.

Chimera gave the man in front of him a once-over. He was taller, older, half his head decked in cornrows. Absurdly cheerful, considering he was in the process of storming the base of one of the three most notorious gangs of the Substratum--simply to request membership.

He mirrored the intruder's posture, sliding his hands into the pockets of his studded leather jacket. His fingers circled around one of his signature lighters.

"Off with the mask," he said calmly. "You have no use for it."

Well, he supposed it was reassuring that Chimera was talking to him. August tilted his head to the side, watching his movements through the eyeholes of his mask, apparently considering his request. "And if I don't want to~?" he remarked, just to test the waters, then shifted his weight, scraping one foot against the floor, anchoring it for movement in his mind (better safe than sorry) and removing one hand from his pocket to pull off the mask, the ties holding it on his face loosening with another gentle surge of power. There was a moment of blindness as the forehead of the mask passed his eyes, in which he tensed ever-so-slightly, prepared to fling part of the floor upwards if the Boss moved, and squeezed the mask when his sight was clear again, the clay and glaze compressing into a white ceramic ball.

"There. Now, shall we talk?"

Chimera took note as the intruder shifted his footing, recalled the rumbling of the ground earlier. He betrayed no tension, eyes fixed on the man's mask as it slid down to reveal the face behind it.

Older, definitely. The same age as the ex-boss had been before Chimera had brought him down.

He examined the subtle set of the man's shoulders. Cautious, even after only a millisecond of broken eye-contact, courtesy of the mask. The intruder wasn't all dumbass, then, after that ridiculous entrance.

The mask contorted, compressed--did he manipulate earth? No. The odd contraption of bulletproof glass and wheels still stood proudly behind him, the craft measly but effective--what were his limits? Chimera's eyes narrowed. It didn't matter. Creativity was the most dangerous weapon of all.

His fingers shifted in his pocket--and felt the edge of a switchblade.
"And if I don't want to...?" he drawled, echoed.

August smiled, the expression visible this time as he tucked his compressed mask into his hoodie pocket; shifting his weight back to his other foot, he listened to Chimera's words, expression unwavering even as the Boss balked. "If you don't talk to me, I'm afraid I'll have to make even more of a statement," he replied easily, smile stretching into a grin. He could practically feel the nervousness of the goons behind him; he was sure what he was doing was unprecedented. Unexpected. Ordinary people didn't just storm the base of a major gang and come out unperforated, not to speak of talking to the Boss directly and essentially demanding a spot in said gang. They'd gotten too comfortable.

Well, this would certainly be one hell of a wake-up call.

Great. Just what he needed. Another smug bastard with a casual, cheerful grin. Chimera didn't go years knowing Winter and not realize what an expression like that meant. He could feel his ire rising just looking at it--a mute, searing burn, spreading through his blood and to the surface. His hands clenched and the first hints of a smile tilted his lips, sharp, challenging.

Behind the wall of bulletproof glass, several of his men twitched, recognizing that look. Pathetic, the lot of them. Pity the ones that actually had guts were out on jobs.

"Then make your point," he said, voice quiet. "And get out."

Oh now, there was a smile! Too bad it was bitter and as sharp as a blade, full of threats and promise--August always felt bad for those who couldn't smile. It was like a sickness, he thought as he turned, calling out, "Alright, now watch carefully!" to those assembled, a magician before a crowd, his shield swiveling around and expanding even as he spoke to encase him in safety--a sickness of the soul rather than the body. You couldn't be too serious. It would lead you to an early grave.

He touched a pillar of the warehouse, sensing it all the way through, all the way up to the ceiling and down into the ground where it was anchored, and then activated it the same way he had the floor, all the way down and all the way up, and then asked it very politely to be somewhere else with a surge of his power.

It went.

The entire support pillar disappeared, a loud thunk resounding from the ground outside the warehouse wall, close by, and with an ominous sort of creaking motion, the roof and building and walls swayed, its support suddenly kicked out from underneath it, and at that moment, the displaced support column chose to fall, crashing through the outer wall of the warehouse to the inside, and the entire structure decided to give up the ghost, slowly starting to fold in on itself, faster little by little as gravity caught it, and August turned to his audience and grinned again.

"Better get going."

So saying, he broke for the entry point of the displaced pillar into the warehouse, compressing the bulletproof glass and plank and wheels as he went, sending them politely back into his backpack as he ducked out the ragged tear in the side of the building, the entire place coming down in tearing, screaming chunks, filling with the sounds of panic.

"Hopefully that was enough of a point," he remarked.

Manipulation of certain properties, then, Chimera decided, as the steel beam vanished, and the warehouse swayed, and only quick reflexes enabled him to dodge the first chunk of roof as it came hurtling to the ground, age-old beams creaking in protest and crumpling under the weight. What a show-off was his second thought, through the shouts of alarm, and, ignoring the intruder as he fled from the chaos, he turned to his bewildered, startled men with a snarl.

"Do you want to die? Get out."

And they did--scrambling over each other as the ceiling dropped bits of debris, as dust rose from breaking cement--and Chimera followed suit, tugging the high collar of his jacket over his nose, ducking through the hole after the intruder, knowing inherently that staying inside was not an option as the warehouse groaned, collapsed into itself.

His phone vibrated as he reached a safe distance, and against his instinct he flipped it open.

Whoopsie! :), said the message, and , and mother of fuck Chimera didn't even want to know.

The intruder still stood nearby--smug, smug asshole--and most of his men had made it out, looking horrified and worse for the wear. Good, thought Chimera. They wanted excitement, now they've got it. Then: I need to do a fucking purge, as someone fainted.

Chimera snapped his phone shut again--looked back to the rubble, the dust cloud still lingering in the air, useless now, and wasn't it a good thing he never stored much of anything in there? He turned back to the stupid, ridiculous, grinning, gutsy intruder with an exhale of steam.
"Fine," he said, and he could see use, potential in the future, not just the quivering prospects and associates nearby. "Audience granted. You want membership? Name, mutation, restitution."

August took a sort of considering look at the men and women gathered around the remains of their warehouse--a few of them looked rather green around the gills, some looked like they were going to puke, and one unlucky soul had fainted, passed out cold on the ground. Whelp. Couldn't say he thought a lot of this bunch of recruits--one fallen building and they went all aflutter with terror. Imagine if they actually did get into trouble.

The Boss though, he just looked a bit annoyed, especially at the message he'd just gotten on his phone; he snapped it shut, surveyed the wreckage, and then turned his attention back to August.

"Fine. Audience granted. You want membership? Name, mutation, restitution."

Bingo~ August swept himself into a half-bow, looking utterly ridiculous in his hoodie and coat, standing there on the remains of what had once been the tagged warehouse HQ of the most predominant gang of the South District, and yet still managing to make the motion seem regal. "Clockwork. Object manipulation. And my restitution has already been paid. At your service, Boss."

Chimera snorted, lip curling. Manipulation, all right. Type 1 at that. Some people were just born damn lucky--and damn obnoxious. He glanced over at his loitering, unsure men.

"Find a new base." He raised a hand, halting them before they could scatter. "And don't spread the news." Because surely that assfuck moron in a shitty blue headband had already done so, and in the loudest way possible. Nebula, too, surely knew by now, given he had his bloody, filthy fingers dug into every information network he could get his hands on.

Orders were orders, and those who stayed in-base were generally the lower-ranks, the incompetent or unsure waiting for a mundane job to make themselves feel useful. A horde, weak as all shit individually but still formidable as a group. They fled immediately at his dismissal, forever eager to please the boss.

Chimera had no qualms in being alone. He tilted his head at the self-proclaimed Clockwork, all casual movements and lethal grace. "Hmm," he said, and his eyes flashed--curiously, dangerously.
"A simple pillar--is that all?"

The older man rose from his half-bow, sliding off of the steel pillar he was still standing on to land on the ground, leaning on the now-immovable object when he steadied himself, tucking his hands into his pockets as he watched the orange-haired boss order around his lackeys--trying to find a new place to call headquarters. August would have offered to try to help fix their old one, but he supposed that the destruction of it must have caught some attention... maybe something to do with the text message that the Boss had received? Hmm. Now probably wasn't the time to ponder on it.

"A simple pillar--is that all?"

He tilted his head in an echo of Chimera's motion, another smile spreading across his face--this one different from his usual. Not as jovial. Not as bright. More of a sort of slash across his face, a smirk that was all business and perhaps just a little cold, and responded with. "Hardly. I'm quite the useful creature, if you know how to use me to your advantage. Shall I demonstrate again? What would you have me do, Boss?"

It was downright ridiculous. For a person to barge into gang HQ, destroy the entire building, and then proceed to accept the leadership of the boss--especially considering the utterly incompetent display of the members earlier--was just absolutely downright ridiculous. But there was a reason why Solstice was the most notorious South District mercenary organization, and a reason why Chimera was at the front, leading the charge. He surveyed the smirk on Clockwork's face, reassessed; it wasn't blank and blithely cheerful anymore, but sharp, focused.

"You know your own limits better than I." He took a lazy step forward, then another. His phone vibrated again--another obnoxious text, or a cue? Another vibration followed: a cue. The complete crumble of the warehouse had drawn unwanted attention--and there. The sound of sirens in the distance. Two minutes left. He stepped past Clockwork, toward the collapsed steel beam and the rubble. The dust from the collapse still hadn't settled, lingering a hazy gray-gold over bent beams and the shattered remnants of cement and wooden crates.

He hadn't kept all those wooden crates for nothing.

"Make a diversion."

One step and then another--Chimera tread closer over the scattered rubble of the warehouse, stalking close like some sort of massive serpent--no. A dragon. August could almost feel the heat from him, standing here.

"Make a diversion."

He let his head roll to one side, metaphorically cocking an ear. Ah. Sirens. The law was on the ball for this one--response time was usually lower for this region, and they usually kept out of the deep gang business, but he supposed that Solstice had probably made enough trouble lately that they were just looking for an excuse to investigate. Luckily (he supposed), all the small fry of the gang had scattered off into the district, searching for a new place for their flock to roost.

All save him and the dragon.

"Aye, aye, Boss~" August took a moment, eyes flickering over the wreckage to just see what he had to work with before the man raised one hand to touch the steel pillar again. It was practically an old friend at this point.

Then he strolled out into the street, made an imperious flicking gesture with two of his fingers, and the support beam vanished, thunking down instead in front of him. Another movement, and the beam split into two, one disappearing momentarily to plop down onto the street behind him.

One more, and both of them disappeared--far down the street, at the intersection, they reappeared.

August made one more gesture, and both solid steel half-pillars exploded, utterly silently, into hundreds of tiny, sharp pieces that rained onto the asphalt with inaudible-at-this-distance pinging noises.

He lowered his hands.
"Well, let's see--can't put them back together like that, but it should serve~"

At that moment, the first of the leading cars skreeched around the corner--and hit the patch of homemade caltrops, all its tires exploding with a sharp, amazingly loud sound, and fishtailing into the side of a dilapidated apartment building. August turned back to Chimera.

"Better get going, then~? That should hold them off for a bit."
