Trace had planned on leisurely strolling his way down to the target location, but it turned out that the walk across Districts was a lot longer than he anticipated. He reminded himself that most of the time he did that he was lost in his own world and not paying attention to the passage of time. Next time he had to travel to the South District he'd make sure to leave early, or at the very least jog down there if he didn't. Yeah, that should suffice. Because dashing to get to your target location on time was just hells of uncool. He'd probably be tired and, ugh, sweaty by the time he got there. But it had started to cool down and there was a nice breeze blowing so at least it would evaporate. Though the feeling of cold sweat was pretty nasty, at least he'd be nice and dry.

Once he got into the general vicinity (using the best mapping technology his phone had to offer, of course), he slowed down his movements. He had a reasonable amount of time to get there, and it wouldn't do to draw too much attention to himself. This was a mission that required stealth, apparently. If it wasn't stated so blatantly, the fact that it involved a 'mysterious package' and the informant was 'anonymous' were definite red flags. So he approached warily, making sure his overly-large (so there was a use for it, afer all) hood covered most of the top portion of his face. There was a small boutique at the other end of the street from the small café. He stood in front of the large display windows, feigning looking at the colorful objects in the store with excitement while he observed the front of the café.

Hey, if the mission called for stealth, he'd give them stealth.

So Hoss needed to be stealthy? He sat perched on his bike across the street from the cafe, he didn't pay attention to the store he was front of so much as the people at the cafe. Still, he kept a more vaguely moronic interest as if he was looking to see if there were any hot chicks to hit on rather than looking for anyone in particular. He kept this look as his bike slowly started toward the street corner where he pressed the crosswalk button and awaited the ability to cross.

Delivering a package should be pretty easy, right? Last time he did that he ditched out on the mission but hey, who's counting? Besides, this could be very lucrative, and he already had a game strategy for how this could go down. Step one? Make copies of the package container, easy enough. Give each fake to one of the people with him and take the real one for himself was step two. Then, step three, complete the mission as they all split off in different directions.

One thing was for certain though, he wasn't trusting anyone else with the handling of the package unless he absolutely had to. He didn't want to gamble his payment on the idea that the people he was working with weren't complete morons. Hell, they were probably nearby wearing trench coats and sunglasses with black hats while he was dressed normal. It was a cafe, there was no reason to freak out and go all secret agent in his eyes. Act casual.

The green letters lit up instructing pedestrians to walk, signalling Harvey that it was time to make his way across. Slowly but surely he would pedal across and look out for that red scarf as he approached the cafe. Once it was found? He would very casually find a place to set and lock up his bike before walking into the cafe and getting in line to get his drink.

No need to approach until you had a drink. Casual meant buying your drink and taking your seat.

Getting to the border of West and South District was easy enough, it was what was beyond that border he needed help on. And without a portable GPS or a decent phone, help would be a little hard to get. He’d spent a good five minutes on his (borrowed) computer, trying to plan the most efficient route before giving up and simply printing out several pages worth of maps for the South District. Sure, his roommate (more like host; Riley wasn’t actually paying any of the rent, but rather just using the place to sleep and keep his stuff in exchange for doing most of the chores) might get a bit irritated at the waste of paper, but it was better than him getting lost in the most dangerous District of the city. He preferred to believe that his roommate liked him alive.

He set out for the destination after a few more minutes of studying the now on-paper maps, carefully stowing them away in a dark blue backpack he was bringing. If it was a delivery, he may as well bring one along, just in case, though it didn’t contain much other than a couple emergency supplies. Also known as granola bars, a water bottle, a couple of bandages and sanitizing wipes, and of course his inhaler. Nothing particularly great, to be honest, though it would have to do.

It was only a minute onto South District land did he think to remove his bandanna and shove it into a pocket. While it did help with his restitution and help hide his face, he had the feeling that wearing a bandanna bandit-style would attract more attention than necessary. He really needed to find a better solution for that, but for now…well, it was in easy reach at least, in case nature decided to be cruel and blow pollen in all the way from the suburbs.

When the destination was finally in sight – and found with only a handful more glances at the map, too! – he glanced around as casually as he could, trying to force the tension out of his body. Deep, calm breaths, Riley. It can’t be too likely that the “anonymous” person is actually a murderer, right? Besides, you have two other people you’re working with…unless they’re co-conspirators.

No no no. No overthinking things. He took a brief moment to push the thoughts away and settle his pulse. Feeling just a bit better and the tension contained to an uneasy knot in his chest, he moved onwards, walking with the crowd before splitting away to enter the café, standing to one side with other customers that had yet to decide on their orders, carefully refraining from making eye contact by studying the menu board. Every once in a while he glanced around the area from the corner of his eyes, doing his best not to seem too suspicious.

Trace waited around for a good minute or two (any longer and it might appear suspicious), moving around occasionally to get a better vantage point-- of the boutique interior, of course! The posting had been very vague and unfortunately that meant the rendezvous point could be either inside our outside. The meeting time passed and a couple of people had wandered their way indoors so he decided that the best course of action would be to follow them. He threw back his hood and tapped his chin as he strolled towards the entrance.

He didn't expect it to be as packed as it was, but then again if this was supposed to be a covert job then it only made sense that it was done out in the open. The #1 rule of espionage was that to to be invisible you had to make yourself easily visible. That's why to blend in you have to stand out sometimes. He decided against waiting in line and instead slid into one of the seats near the back wall with a good view of the entrance. A very good vantage point. He took out his phone and laid it down on the table, humming to himself.

It was times like these that explained why he liked to play the background game. He had two partners to look for, and the red-scarfed informant as well. The latter he could always identify, but the former? It could be any of the various patrons. Probably ones that look like they're occupied. If they're any good at being discreet, that is. He put on his best bored face and leaned back in his chair, swiping his thumb across his phone's touch screen as if scanning for messages.

Then a swatch of red caught his eye. Seemed the informant was heading over to get a stirrer for his coffee. Trace steeled himself and stood up, grinning his fullest grin and walked over to him.
"Look who decided to finally show up," he chuckled as he tapped the informant on the shoulder. "It's been a while, dude." He led him over to the table and sat down, stretching.

And that's how you do it, folks.

Harvey was in line, having managed to get to the front by now and order his herbal tea before he heard something familiar. It wasn't easy to catch because of the crowd but amongst the voices there it was resting comfortable as it filled his ears. Assmunch. His lips twisted sharply into a sick grin as he imagined just how fun it might be to shock him. But he waited, grabbed his drink, and turned around to see where he was before doing anything. After all, if this kid was here by himself this could potentially fuck up his meet up for the delivery gig.

He spotted the boy well before he even noticed the red scarf but once he recognized that they were at the same table he was able to relax. How bad would that have been to be in the middle of a meeting with a client and have that smiley doofus crash the meeting? Harvey would have been kissing those credits goodbye at the very least. He took a sip as he approached the table and took a seat, nodding to the scarved client at first before turning to the boy and simply greeting him as, "Assmunch."

The red scarved client seemed to be looking around silently, simply smiling and saying, "Hey, how have things been?" Still his attention seemed to be much more focused on the surrounding people than on Assmunch and Hoss. Harvey figured it was for the possible third person for the mission so he decided to ask if either of them knew if they would have a third joining them.

"Hey have either of you seen Ryan's friend? I think he mentioned he would be around here today and that he might be free to help us move, but I don't know if he ever got a hold of him to ask about it." He only wished they were in a place where he could smoke. He'd much rather be talking straight than doing any of this. It wasn't like him at all to be so... fake. What did normal people talk about in coffee shops? He had never talked to anyone at a coffee shop except to say 'get me my fucking drink you minimum waged pothead'.

This gave Harvey the opportunity to turn in his seat and look around for 'Ryan's friend'. Ryan of course referencing the mission notes and moving referencing moving boxes or packages.

When a flash of red caught his attention, Riley turned his head just a fraction, quickly spotting the scarf and its wearer among other civilians. Well, this is it. He wove past the other customers, giving the best smile he could manage and walking over to the informant. “Good to see you again. And both of you as well,” he added, looking over at the man’s companions: a blond haired teen – maybe even around his age, though the smile made him look all the more youthful – and a brown haired man with red eyes.

A harbinger, obviously. It was a bit reassuring to know he’d be working with someone of...well, “his own kind”. Less discrimination and fear, right? He took another look at the blond just to check – his eyes were an interesting shade of blue, to say in the least, but maybe he was just weird. No doubt, Riley would learn of the reality sooner or later.

The informant gave a slight smile as he slid into the remaining seat. Now with all three mission takers here, the man no longer glanced around as frequently and assumed a more casual posture. Well, more casual than he already was, which Riley hadn’t believed was possible.

Casual. Right. This was not going to be easy, was it?

Putting an elbow on the table and propping his chin on the back of his hand, Riley shifted his gaze from client to his – most likely temporary – allies.

“Sorry for not seeing you guys earlier; I was a bit preoccupied with the menu and prices. Three credits for a small espresso? Really?” He shook his head lightly. “I think I prefer not going broke.”

With a slight chuckle to cover his unease, he continued. “I hope I didn’t miss anything?” He directed the question towards the informant, who simply shook his head. “Good.”

Done speaking for the while, he sat up straighter, placing and crossing both arms on the table edge, leaning forward just a bit to get comfortable. He really hoped his acting was up to par; he had the feeling that no one would leave this job happy if he messed this up.

Post by Trace Tue Aug 21, 2012 11:00 am

Trace and the anonymous client made a little bit of small talk, but it was obvious that he was simultaneously trying to hold the conversation and be acutely aware of everything else going on in the room. He couldn't help but feel a pang of pity for the guy. Whatever he wanted delivered must be really important -- or he was just an eccentric -- because Trace could have sworn there was some sort of clandestine archetype being played out here. And word-for-word, at that. But it certainly was more exciting than trimming hedges. And paid better. Though he was lucky he got anything from that odd job. He'd certainly made a killing because the man was in a generous kind of mood. But enough about that. He had a real job to do.

His small smile only widened when none other than his best friend in the entire universe (Read: sarcasm) sat down at the table. His eyebrows raised almost imperceptibly, and he nodded once in reply. "About time." The gears in his head were already turning. He could be pretty useful, actually. Duplicating the packages could be useful. But then it'd mean they'd have to split up-- and that would more than halve their defensive potential. And he didn't know if the duplication was permanent. If not then time would also be their enemy. Trace would figure it out one way or another. Probably when they got debriefed.

Speaking of debriefing, he was beginning to wonder if the third guy planned to show up at all when a third person slipped into the remaining seat. Speak of the Devil, he thought.

"Not a problem, dude. And what can I say? They've got to find some way to rob us of our money."

This one was another harbinger too. Hopefully his mutation was somewhere in the complete invisibility to impenetrable forcefields range. If not, well. They'd just have to put some effort into it. And honestly, that didn't sound too much like a chore. A clandestine delivery job seemed more like a gift. It wasn't every day that you got to do things like that. Or maybe his expectations had lowered severely due to the frequency of odd jobs he did. Either way he was pretty excited and determined to deliver the package to the destination.

He perked up when he heard their informant begin to speak.

The third had arrived, leaving Hoss to get a glimpse of his eyes. So, three harbingers with one normal human being sitting at a table. He could only imagine what was going through the guy's head if he had managed to see through Trace's slightly normal appearance. In all honesty he should have brought his coloured contact lenses to give off the appearance of normalcy. At least then he wouldn't be so intimidating for someone like this guy.

After they were seemingly done with their conversation, their mysterious friend suddenly spoke up. Hoss listened sharply, half expecting him to suddenly run down the mission details right then and there.

"Oh, look at the time." He looked up at the clock nearby and checked his watch. "Marie will kill me if I'm late to dinner again. Nice seeing you three though, it's been a pleasure."

He rose up from his seat as Hoss quickly looked down, noticing a shopping bag that the man had left by his foot. Hoss grabbed it and said to the others, "Yeah, I guess I'm not in the mood to hang around here either. You guys wanna come help me move into my new apartment? I'll pay for dinner." Hopefully they understood what was going on, because Hoss caught on rather quickly. The bag had the package they needed to deliver, hopefully with instructions.

He would lead the way out and into a nearby alleyway, where he would set up by a dumpster with the shopping bag set on top of it before pulling out a plain brown package with no markings and a note.

He read the note to himself before setting it down for the others to check out.

Instructions: Take the parcel to 4239 Oakview Parkway, West District. Do not open the parcel, if any seal is broken you will not be paid. If the parcel does not reach the destination in 40 minutes you will not be paid. If the parcel is not handled with care to the degree that the contents are found damaged you will not be paid. Once the package is at the location noted, tell the doorman of the building that you have a package and it's urgent. He will take it from you. Five minutes later if the above requirements have been met you will be texted the location of a dead drop. That is where you will find your pay. To avoid conflict amongst the three of you, you will each be given a separate dead drop location.

What the hell are we delivering?

Riley gave a slight nod as the informant left, slightly confused but willing to take the man’s sudden disappearance in stride. He turned towards his partners just as the other harbinger – well, the only one that he knew for sure to be a harbinger – started speaking. He seemed to know what he was doing, at least, so the dark-haired teen decided to go with it. “Sure, why not? I’ve got nothing else planned for the day anyways.” Which was true enough; he’d cleared his entire schedule – admittedly, there wasn’t much to begin with – for this, just in case.

He stood up and followed the brown haired man out of the building, staying quiet through the walk. Riley kept his eyes on the red-eyed harbinger, only looking away to glance over at the other teen to see if he was following as well. He wasn’t particularly sure if he should introduce himself to them. This was a super-secret delivery mission, after all; maybe it’d be better to minimize how much these two knew about him? He’d have to wait and see what they did to decide.

Riley waited as patiently as possible while the man read the note left with the package, moving forward to read it for himself when he was done. The butterflies in his stomach grew all the more erratic with each line before he turned and offered the paper to the blond. “Do either of you find this job a bit sketchy?” he asked quietly, eyeing the package, brows furrowed ever so slightly. As long as the thing didn’t blow up in their faces while they were trying to deliver it, he would refrain from being too bothered by the same thing. Still, though, they could be delivering the materials needed to assassinate a mayor for all they knew.

He leaned against the side of the building, crossing his arms as he studied the other two. “So…any plans?” Should they had any good powers or skills, they could mention it now, since he couldn't think of much without knowing what they could do. His own wasn’t the greatest for this job, but it still could find a purpose. Somehow. If anything, the best he could offer was the knowledge on where the destination was, or at least its general location. Spending the majority of his life in the West District was finally proving to be useful.

And just like that, the ball was set rolling. Trace gave a small nod and a smile as the informant got up and stalked off. He hadn't seen the package formally, but he didn't even bother checking. This was so by-the-book that he'd predicted it the moment they sat down and started making small-talk. He made a show of thinking about Smoky's offer for a bit. Then he shrugged and got up lazily, stretching a bit. And winked.

"I could think of worse ways to be spending my time."

And it was sort of true. Smoky was... not so bad, he thought. After a careful night of consideration he'd come to the conclusion that he was an okay guy. Not that he was thinking about him all night or anything, b-baka! So he strolled behind the two of them. Smoky lead them out of a shop and to a nearby alleyway. In his head, Trace ticked off another box on the by-the-book secrecy list he'd been compiling since the start of his and Mr. Anonymous's conversation. Kind of fascinating, actually. In a weird way.

He took the note and read it, choosing to defer his answer until afterwards. The small smile on his lips turned into a full-blown smirk in the thirty seconds it took him to get through the entire thing. Already the cogs in his head were whirring, the machine that was his mind working at 100% efficiency. So many things were running through his head, in fact, that he had to start indexing them or else he feared he'd lose track and confuse himself. After he'd taken a few moments to ground himself, he nodded a bit to himself and turned to the others.

"I think there's a few possibilities to consider. One, this guy is in the clandestine business and for some reason decided to trust us with an important package? That or it's a decoy and we're just expendable bait for his enemies. Two, he's some lowly gang member shirking his work by getting us to deliver stuff for him. Three, he's just some rich dork who's into spy flicks and just wants to live vicariously through his delusions of being a secret agent."

Yeah, those three seemed the most likely out of the innumerable permutations.

He turned to Smoky and smiled sweetly.

"I think you're going to be our ace-in-the-hole," he murmured, winking once again. Can you say callback? It was somewhat ironic, actually, given the circumstances. But he'd been right that time after all: he was gonna figure out more about this guy's power, one way or another. And his restitution too, by the looks of it. The minute he started whistling that theme, Trace would know for certain. That would put them on equal footing. Though it didn't really matter to Trace anymore. This wasn't a game of upstaging each other. He was just interested in Smoky what he could do.

Post by Hoss Wed Aug 22, 2012 12:10 am

Trace had an ability that would make for an interesting trap. He had it in mind already, only he'd have to figure out just how the ability worked. Most likely it would only work with the decoy that Trace himself would have in his vision of the mission. The new guy he would have to ask bluntly what if any use he had. So he listened to them, mostly talking about the nature of the package itself as well as their employer.

"Speaking as a professional, I only think as far as this. Is this mission worth dying for. It isn't, not enough credits in the world can account for me dying. Bottom line, if you are smart, you'll drop the mission the second you think you could be killed. We don't know enough now to tell if that is the case. This could just be time sensitive, and possibly explosive."

He looked down. It was the handle with care that bothered him. "If we are illegally transporting nitro for example, this could get messy if we drop it or damage the package." The package in question was tall and didn't seem to have anything moving about. It was, however, carrying a bit of weight inside of it.

"More importantly is this. We'll split up, once we know where our destination is. I'm a resident of the Southern District so I'm more or less used to that environment. Where we are going is a mystery to me, but I think I've heard of the street. Then, I'll provide each of you with a decoy, large enough for say... a bottle of water to be put inside? Breaking the seals on the decoy should be fine after all."

He pulled out his phone, "Then, we make sure we are in contact if need be. If you are attacked by anyone or anything, you send a text to me specifically and I'll know where any interceptors are coming from. If I am attacked I will send out a distress text to both of you with my location, in which case you will come immediately to try and pull the tails off of me or possibly take the package while I pull them off course. As I will be carrying the real package as of now until such a time. Any questions, concerns, or possible ideas involving abilities that the others need to know of specifically? Remember privacy and withholding personal information is well within your right."

Post by Noise Sun Sep 02, 2012 4:07 pm

Wow, shit this guy really did know what he was doing. Riley kept his silence as the man spoke, nodding occasionally to indicate his attention. Everything seemed reasonable, he supposed, though…

“You’ll be making the decoys, I’m assuming?” They didn’t exactly have the time to get any, after all, and making more of something sounded like a reasonable harbinger power. Of course, it seemed as though he couldn’t copy whatever was inside the package, or else they’d have an easy way to figure out what it was. “Will they be stable enough to survive the job?” He didn’t want to cast any doubts on the guy’s ability, but it was still important to know. He knew absolutely nothing about either of these people, and while the red-eyed man’s confidence was reassuring, the sketchy nature of the job countered it. Like the two had said, they were being used to further some unknown person’s agenda and could easily be delivering something downright dangerous. Riley wasn’t particularly sure if he would like that on his conscience, but…hey, he needed the credits. Preemptive apologies to anyone that ends up dead because of this.

“As for the destination, it isn’t too far over the border from Southern District. We could probably get there in a reasonable amount of time if we don’t get slowed down by anything. If I remember right, there’s a fancy hotel and some restaurants along that street, so it shouldn’t be hard to find once we get there.”

Shifting his weight onto one foot, he reached into his pocket and took out his phone, looking at the man expectantly. “Numbers, then?” He quickly rattled off his own so they could add him to their contacts. “And, as it happens, if you do get attacked – ” he was directing this to the red-eyed man “ – get some earplugs; if I’m close enough to help, I don’t want to distract you on accident.” Hopefully, hopefully none of them would get into trouble, though. Still, with evening setting in (and soon after, night), there wasn’t any guarantee of an easy delivery.

He quieted once more, waiting to see if there was anything else they needed to cover before heading out. The less they dawdled, the better, but information was still important.

Post by Trace Sun Sep 16, 2012 9:31 pm

Trace double-checked whether the mission was worth dying for and-- still nope. Besides, he didn't exactly feel very much like dying on that particular day. Maybe if given the opportunity the day before or the day after, he may have considered it, but. It just seemed like right then and there wasn't the best time for such an offer. Indeed, though he doubted any of them would be dying tonight. Hopefully, at least, since they had no clue who, if anyone, would be after the contents of the package.

Speaking of contents of the package, Smoky had said the decoys'd be big enough to fit a water bottle inside of them, right? That little aside brought a smile to his lips. He kind of felt bad for the other guy, because it was almost as if they were sending tiny snippets of code at each other that were virtually undetectable, and though he didn't know it, Mr. Third Wheel was missing out on the choicest cuts of roast beef in this conversation. But back on point, he could very well make use of the size of the decoys. If he rapidly increased the pressure on the water bottle, and to a greater extent he'd be able to massively increase the amount of force and thus the damage it would do if in someone's hands. Assuming, of course, they managed to snatch the package from him, which he hoped wasn't even a remote possibility. Then again, this whole situation was hypothetical, because they had no idea if there would be pursuers.

And the decoys themselves seemed fine to him. The last (and also the first) time he'd seen Smoky using his power, it was to create catnip (which was then unceremoniously dumped on his head, but that was a story for a later date). If the cats had been convinced, he was sure some silent ninjas wouldn't be able to tell in the dark, even with their astounding night vision and ability to melt into the shadows. Though that made him really reconsider his ability to fight these guys. He really wasn't prepared for ninjas. Goddamnit, if only their anonymous benefactor had forewarned them, he could have brought his authentic samurai armor. Or at least his katana. Bitches feared his katana.

Oh well.

He made note to cover his ears when Mr. Third Wheel decided to use those chops of his, and added him to his contact list. Making friends already. That just made all kinds of warm bubbly feelings churn in his stomach. Or that could just be the hydrochloric acid eating away at his stomach lining because he hadn't eaten anything since lunch. Who knew? Who knew, indeed.

With those final sentiments he fished a few water bottles out of his backpack. He smiled widely at both of them.

"Running from pursuers will work up quite the thirst, you know? Besides, it's always safe to carry a bottle of water with you when you're going on a potentially dangerous adventure!"

He turned to Hoss.

"Since you're our ace in the hole, I think you'd most benefit from them. If you guys want to carry them of course. Just a tentative friendly suggestion."

He chuckled to himself at the little reference he managed to sneak in. Ace in the hole. Clever, Trace. Very clever. He gave himself a mental pat on the back for that. It was almost as if he was trading snippets of disguised code to Smoky. All the while, Mr. Third Wheel was completely unaware.

"Oh, and! I'm gonna need your number!"

He tried not to sound too excited about that.

"Yeah, I'll be making the decoys. They are just as stable as the original for certain but there won't be anything inside of them to give the illusion of weight unless you put something inside of them." Hoss had been pretty intrigued by the advice that they should use ear plugs. Hoss thought about it for all of two seconds before realizing he had makeshift earplugs on hand. They weren't the cleanest things but his cigarette butts would work fine enough. He'd just make two copies of one already smoked down or something so that he wouldn't have to waste any more smokes than he had to. With a nod toward noise and a smile at grabbing the water bottle Hoss told them both his number.

"Thanks for the water, I'm sure it'll come in handy," he grinned and put the bottle away in his bag along with his phone. His pocket would be too hard to manage getting it in and out of while riding his bike in case he needed it after all. He reached into the nearby dumpster with his newly freed hand and placed his hand against the trash as he held the package with the other, his fingers pressing against it.

"Like I said, decoys. Makes things a lot easier in the end. Buys us time if anything happens, hopefully nothing well but plan for the worst and all." After a good twenty seconds he produced the first decoy out of the dumpster. It didn't have much a bad smell to it since it was really only in there about a second before he tossed the first one over to trace. "That's one, go ahead and lead the group. You first, then myself, than lastly this guy."

Hoss placed his hand back into the dumpster and pressed his fingers to trash once more as he began to create the next decoy. "Guessing you do something with sound or noise that would damage ears or disorient people, in which case you'll be better off bringing up the rear. Sound travels forward, we'll hear you if anything happens. I don't know what your power is but given more time we could come up with a system for you to give out instructions if it's anything capable of amplifying noise."

Hoss produced the second decoy and gave it to the guy. He reached into his pack of smokes and broke off a filter, reaching further into his bag to grab the newspaper which was arguably cleaner than trash. While it didn't make any difference what he used he was a bit pickier with what he put into his ears. In seconds he brought out two copies and placed them both in his ears. "You won't be hearing from me except through cell from now on. Alright Assmunch. You're up fir-"

He stopped mid sentence, unable to hold it back as he began to whistle the familiar tune. He rolled his eyes as he made his way back toward where he had his bike.
