[Bounty - Cracker] What’s Crack-a-Lackin’? [Cheshire and Haze] Empty [Bounty - Cracker] What’s Crack-a-Lackin’? [Cheshire and Haze]

The night was still young, even after Nathan had finished a drop off. Without a shift at the Pulse to look forward to, he felt delightfully energized, even as he blinked furiously in a vain attempt to shoo away the imaginary bats swooping down and along the alley. Imaginary, yes, because the Radius had no bats. And perhaps it was just his lack of schooling, but he was fairly sure most bats weren’t as big as dogs, nor were they so blue.

The bats vanished, only to be replaced with twelve-legged spiders. Those he could ignore, however, even if they did stray a little too close for comfort.

With no more packages left to send, he headed down the street, careful to stay out of lamp lights as he pulled his bag snuggly against his back. Now was a good time as any to scout for that bounty – Laura Yue, or something? Cracker? What a terrible alias.

The woman was from Network, and if he was lucky she’d still be somewhere around the East District. The key was knowing where to look, or who to ask and how much to pay. The easiest would be to find one of his clients, but doing so would likely lose him a customer. But beyond them, he wasn’t sure who would be willing to do business, nor if he as Cheshire had enough reputation to use it as a bargaining token. It wasn’t like he was the only reliable smuggler around, after all.

So it came back down to the basics, ghosting through empty city streets and less empty city alleys, where he stayed out of the rare strangers’ ways and they returned the favor. Of course, he gave each of them a good look-over before passing them by.

He had no idea how much time had passed before he spotted someone who even remotely looked like his target. Out of the corner of his vision, thankfully clear of any fakery now, he saw the figure – the woman – twist slightly to study him as they slinked past each other. A few moments later, and she’d turned the corner, melting into the shadows.

Not literally, of course. He had that domain covered just fine. He did so now, falling into the familiar and soothing coolness of shadows. There was no time to relish the feeling, however, and he darted after the woman. As far as he could tell, she fit the Bulletin’s description just fine, even in the dark and with his vision distorted and turned sideways from the wall shadow he inhabited.

He slid back down to the sidewalk, counted down from three, and surfaced behind the woman, drawing a switchblade as he did so. Rather than attacking, however, he ducked and rolled to the side as Cracker jumped away, taser out and the probes piercing the air where he just stood.

The spiders were back, he noted dully, as he sprang back to his feet.

[Bounty - Cracker] What’s Crack-a-Lackin’? [Cheshire and Haze] Empty Re: [Bounty - Cracker] What’s Crack-a-Lackin’? [Cheshire and Haze]

Bounty hunting was a lot easier, she realized, if you had the resources of the city's largest trading and information gang at your fingertips. Or at least, the hunting part was easier. Taking Cracker down was probably a different story, though not that much. A C-ranked criminal shouldn't be something that caused much stress.

Researching the mark's movement patterns was pretty simple, so not even a day after she had accepted the bounty, Ceara found herself downtown in the East District, stretched out on a bus stop bench. Cracker should pass by soon as she made her way back home. If she couldn't manage to corner the woman in a nearby alley, then she could break into her apartment later that night. The second option would be a lot more unnecessary work, though. Ceara wanted this done fast.

She caught sight of the mark's dark hair across the street and waited for a few moments before standing. Ceara frowned when Yue seemed to sense something, glancing away until the woman disappeared into an alley. She sighed and sprinted across the street, narrowly escaping getting hit by a small car. With her back pressed right up against the brick wall, Ceara paused, waiting until she moved far enough down so she could jump her.

She had expected footsteps, not the sound of someone hitting the ground and rolling accompanied by the sharp crackle of a taser.

Ceara swore in her head, hoping that the other guy made this fight quick so she could come in and take the bounty for herself.

Perhaps hoping for a criminal with credits on her head to be less alert had been a stupid idea. The prongs retreated as he narrowly avoided a boot to the groin by taking a step just out of her range. The taser was still trained on him, though the woman backed away from him rather than fire. Presumably to keep him from dodging and taking the opening.

He let out an exasperated sigh, more for dramatic effect than anything, unaware of anyone else nearby.
“Would it be too late to ask you to surrender?” he asked, cautiously and carefully trying to circle around. “There’s a nice 500 painted on your forehead, and I’d like the money.” Despite his (rather lackluster) attempt to distract her, she still watched him like a hawk, taser as unfriendly as ever. He sighed again, now with genuine hint to it. “Or, I guess, 250 if you’re going to make it this hard.”

The distance between them had grown, but she’d stopped backing up when she realized she had a building to her back, albeit several yards away. He feinted right, pulling back as the prongs flew at him again. In that instant, he drew and threw a knife with his free hand. It nicked her gun arm before clattering against the brick behind her, but neither of the two paid it much attention. He’d closed the distance between them; she’d kicked him hard in the shin after ducking under the arc of his blade.

He didn’t have time to curse before she drew a second taser – no, a stun gun, though he wouldn’t notice nor care about the difference until several minutes later.  He scarcely registered it pressing against his side before the pain hit. Letting out a strangled yelp, he reached blindly for his power and vanished into a shadow. The woman staggered momentarily, glancing around quickly as she retracted her taser. Nathan had no plan to attack her at that instant; even as a “shadow”, the pain still lingered badly enough for him to try and wait for it to settle, keeping an eye on the woman as she seemed to search for another danger.

[Bounty - Cracker] What’s Crack-a-Lackin’? [Cheshire and Haze] Empty Re: [Bounty - Cracker] What’s Crack-a-Lackin’? [Cheshire and Haze]

By just the sounds of their brief fight, there were two people in the alley. While it was good that there was only one person, she'd prefer none at all. Taking down two people, both trying to get you and each other, was not fun at all.

She snorted, amused by his attempt to get the woman turn herself in. While a C rank was nothing too special, there were still reasons that she had a bounty on her head in the first place. Cracker wouldn't be distracted by a feeble attempt to divert her attention.

She remained at the edge of the opening to the alley, listening at the grunts and swears and occasional crackle of electricity, wondering when one of them would be taken down. Her hand tightened around the handle of her knife, gripping it hard as she pulled it from her pocket. The brief cry of pain was her cue. One of them went down, and she didn't care which one, only that she had to take down the remaining fighter before they left.

Ceara paused for a moment. No sounds other than a single pair of quiet footsteps, closing in on her position. She whipped around the corner, rushing the woman and aiming a sweeping kick towards her legs. The fact that the other combatant was no longer there didn't escape her notice, but she was too concerned with the second taser, brandished in Cracker's free hand, heading for her chest. She twisted out of the way just in time, rolling under the arm. Her arm lashed out with her own weapon as she passed by, a deep gash opening on the mark's thigh.

Ceara grinned, bouncing back up to a standing position. "Hello!" she said cheerfully, fully aware of the waves of displeasure rolling off the other woman.

Now without the immediate threat of being zapped silly was gone, he watched with interest – and disgruntlement – as a new contender joined the fray, and do a better job than him. How unfortunate, he sighed to himself, stretching carefully as the pain turned from sharpness to dull though persistent throbbing concentrated where he’d been hit. Hopefully, the pale-haired lady wouldn’t mind teaming up or splitting the profits – he hadn’t come out here with the intent of scavenging someone else’s kill, nor to make an enemy. But, he needed those credits.

In any case, being injured didn’t make Cracker want to back down any more than his pitiful words had. While she was preoccupied with the other bounty hunter, Cheshire made his way up the side of the building for higher ground, grimacing as he imagined how much his mind was going to hate him for taking so long, even though the severity of his restitution definitely wouldn’t cross the hearing threshold.

He waited for Cracker to fire her taser again before surfacing – while leaving a shadow was soundless, the sudden weight on old metal wasn’t, and the fire escape creaked beneath him. The rails twisted angrily, almost serpentine, as though scolding him for being heavy. Ignoring the offensive and obviously incorrect inanimate object, he glanced down at the alley – he was only one floor up – as he pocketed his switchblade in favor of his throwing knives.

His reappearance was not completely covered by Cracker’s own attack, however, and she looked up just as he tossed two of the knives down. One left a deeper cut on her already injured arm and the other just missed her foot as she jumped back. But the other hunter caught her attention again before she could retaliate, giving him the chance to time his next throw.

Her grin quickly slipped off her face when Cracker recovered in no time, her hand curling tight around her stun gun and firing again. Ceara swore and shifted out of the way, just in time to dodge the weapon. Her vision swam, the dark, muted colors of the shadowed alley muddling together briefly before sharpening again. Fuck.

She didn't engage her again just yet, hovering and circling around her instead. She was probably faster and stronger than the target, but her weapon - or weapons, she didn't know how many more she had hidden on her body - made her that much more dangerous.

A deep frown was etched on Cracker's face, her impatience with her situation showing through. The screech of protesting metal momentarily distracted Ceara, her eyes briefly flicking up to the source just as Cracker fired again. She barely reacted in time, and only one prong managed to hit its mark and she was spared from the shock, but that was one too many. Ceara shot a glance back up at the sound of metal hitting concrete, frowning at the figure crouched on a fire escape. That's were he went, then. He may have appeared out of nowhere, but that barely fazed her. Wasn't the oddest thing she had ever seen.

Ceara narrowed her eyes when the dark figure attacked her target. She didn't want to share, but she wasn't going to miss an opportunity. She closed the distance between them, aiming to knock the woman down while she was already off balance, dealing with the other hunter's attack. Cracker whipped around before her leg could make contact with her, ducking under it. Ceara glanced up at the man for a moment, silently telling him to take the opening.
