“Well, isn’t this nice!” The man seemed unmoved by Samson’s lively tone. He couldn’t see much of the hooded man’s eyes, but the scowl was definitely in view.

Typical. All he’d wanted was a nice trip to the store, but no. He already had to deal with people who had zero understanding the concept of the express lane (fewer than 10 items, guys, not more), which meant he’d been stuck in queues for much longer than he had hoped. And though Samson Vitus Brandt could tolerate (read: shove to the back of his mind for cannon fodder later) quite a few things, unexpected queues with idiots were not one of them.

And now here he was, standing in the intersection of alleys formed by three buildings, a brick wall some distance behind him. A bag of sundry items hung still in one hand, the other propped on his hip as he studied his would-be robber standing less than a yard away. The man was an inch or so taller than him, clothed in a dark green jacket – which was probably nice when it was new, but probably needed a good wash – and worn jeans with run-of-the-mill tennis shoes. He grasped a knife in his right hand and the handle of another stuck out of his pocket.

“I don’t suppose I could call a rain check on this whole, you know, ‘mugging’ thing?he asked, shifting his weight to one foot and cocking his head to the side. “I should be free this Saturday, anytime from noon to – ” His smile quickly slid off his face when the man cut him off.

“Shut up, kid. I’ll tell you one more time: hand over what you’ve got, and I might leave you in one piece.” Samson eyed the knife, its blade glinting with what light there was with the sun slowly setting. It did seem pretty menacing, especially with the way the man waved it during his threat.

With a sigh, he dropped the plastic bag beside him and rummaged around in his pockets as though searching for his wallet. He could probably make a run for it to either side and get back onto the main road, hopefully where there were still people around. On the other hand, he didn’t fancy getting chased down, nor did he like the idea of the man going on to rob someone else. Well, it was either that or he just wanted to take out some of his irritation from earlier on some asshole who definitely deserved it.

“You drive a hard bargain, good sir,” Samson drawled, taking out his hands to show brass knuckles on both. “But I’m afraid I must refuse. And you know what, I suggest thinking over your life choices.”

Needless to say, the man lunged for him.

The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP] Empty Re: The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP]

Post by Marian Fri Jan 25, 2013 10:00 pm

Marian let out a soft, irritated breath, a light scowl aimed down at the smartphone in her hand. Who the hell had thought it was a good idea to actually give an associate sensitive information instead of just using them as a decoy and having an enforcer deliver it? Hell, even a commander could have done it. At least then the odds of it being stolen were greatly reduced.

She set the phone down again before standing with a soft splash, water streaming down her body as she reached for a towel. So much for a relaxing bath. She quickly dried then stepped out and padded across the apartment to dress, tugging her long hair out of it's pins as she went. She would find him quickly enough and with any luck he wouldn't have been stupid enough to have passed it on. If he had, well, she'd just have to find out who he gave it to.

Dressing was performed quickly and efficiently as was braiding her hair. She grabbed her short bow and a full quiver then was out the door, following the directions on her phone. It took her longer than she was happy with, she had clearly been neglecting some of her skills and would need to work on that, but she had found him, just as the sun was setting.

The problem was, he wasn't alone, in the middle of a fight with another man. She stood back and watched for a little while, absently setting an arrow to the bow's string. The other man was skilled enough, certainly more skilled than the would-be mugger. But this was wasting her time.

Marian lifted her weapon and drew back on the string, waiting for the right opportunity. One that came a handful of seconds later. She released, the arrow flying through the six inches or so between the men and the head burying itself in the wall of the building another twenty feet away.

The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP] Empty Re: The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP]

Post by Helios Sat Jan 26, 2013 10:53 pm

He hadn’t been in a decent fight in a while, but the rhythm of it was not something he forgot easily. Duck, kick. Dodge, swing. Jump back, look out, side step. Grab his arm, knee him in the stomach – oops, forgot about that other hand. Move away, assess the damage. Nothing broken? Keep on going.

Samson watched the other man carefully, bloodied fists in front of him. His attacker seemed to be catching his breath with some difficulty (the harbinger vaguely remembered hearing something crack when he punched the man in the chest, not to mention the bloodied-possibly-broken nose), though still held the knife – also bloody at this point – firmly enough that it was probably better to wait for his next action. He’d have to do something about that, sooner or later.

Sure enough, the man made a move for him again, surprisingly fast for someone with cracked (or worse) ribs. Samson twisted out of the way, grabbing the man’s wrist as he passed and pressing down hard on it and ignoring the inevitable yell of pain. He only really wanted the man to drop the knife, but oops, he might have broken something vaguely useful. It did get the result he’d been going for, at least, and he kicked at the blade, sending it skidding across the concrete. As he did so, he let go of the man, though the harbinger kept an eye on him at all times.

The man cradled his wrist, backing up a few paces. Samson gave him a smile, though not one nearly as friendly as before. The reasons for that were written in wounds on the both of them.
“I did tell you to leave me alone, you know,” he said, half to himself. He quickly shortened the distance between them, looking to…well, not kill the guy, definitely, but give him a nice nap to remember. The man took another step back, fumbling for his spare knife with his uninjured hand as the harbinger drew closer.

But the man was, unfortunately, denied a good night’s sleep. An unfamiliar sound caught his attention. A split second later, it was a movement in his peripheral vision, then a blur in his actual vision. The man froze in place while Samson jerked back, too late to dodge had the projectile been actually aimed at him.

He didn’t bother to look for where the thing had gone, instead turning towards its source. A woman stood a distance away, a rather unfriendly bow in her hands. One of his hands dropped slightly for his jeans pocket, where he kept a switchblade, a moment before he realized that it wouldn’t help anyways. Freaking ranged weapons.

He stepped away from the man. She was either here to break up the fight or to get one of them – if she’d been aiming to kill she probably would’ve already done it, after all. Tense, he straightened up a bit, easing slowly into a less hostile stance and keeping his eyes on her. He was definitely more worried about her than his failed-mugger, in any rate.

After a deep breath, he called out to her, fixing a careful smile on his face.
“Hello, there! Did you need something?”

The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP] Empty Re: The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP]

Post by Marian Sun Jan 27, 2013 10:11 am

Within seconds of firing the first arrow, a second had been strung and drawn back though Marian didn't aim at either of them, letting the head face the ground a few feet in front of her. She eyed Samson approvingly. The man had good reactions and his situational awareness was decent - good enough to notice her shot and attempt to dodge. And he was intelligent enough to look for the source rather than where the projectile had gone.

Her gaze shifted to the other man, not acknowledging that the harbinger had spoken. "You have something of mine."

"You're insane lady. I've never seen you before."

Marian's eyes went even flatter and a light frown tugged at her mouth. "You made the mistake of robbing an Associate of mine and took a file drive. Either you still have it and will give it to me now, or you don't and you will tell me who you gave it to." Though the word choice was innocuous enough, that it was night and she was armed was enough to lend a darker cast to them.

The man blinked a few times then gaped. Well, he was apparently smarter than she had thought. Or, not, considering how he had decided to turn and run.

Her bow flashed up and she took a moment to aim, releasing more quickly this time to bury the arrow into the back of the man's knee, sending him to the ground with a holler of pain.

Marian looked at Samson again, waiting to see what he was going to do. If he decided to turn violent toward her, it would be easy enough for her to shoot him as well. And she was certainly quick enough to do so.

The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP] Empty Re: The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP]

Post by Helios Sun Jan 27, 2013 7:42 pm

Samson watched the exchange with some caution, not wanting to interrupt. Apparently, he was right to do so, considering the fact that the woman had zero issues with shooting down the already rather injured man. What inclination he had to fight had completely vanished the moment she raised the bow again. He knew when he was outmatched, and even if he wanted to attack her, he doubted he’d even make more than a step or two finding himself with an arrow in the eye. Hell, he wasn’t even sure she’d let him go after seeing that display. It hadn’t taken him much longer than the other man to realize that she must’ve had some gang affiliation. Silver Dust, maybe, or a smaller gang that hung around the West District. Either way, it wasn’t a particularly relieving revelation. Interesting, of course – he’d never really had a memorable run in with any gang members – but still a bit unnerving.

When she looked at him, he took another step back, but this time away from her rather than the other man. He held his hands out in front of him, open and palms facing out in a pacifying position – well, more like ‘please don’t shoot me’, but same difference.
“Don’t mind me,” he said, unable to keep the faint lightheartedness out of what was supposed to be calm. Could’ve been worse, though, could’ve been something more antagonistic. “I’m not planning on getting in your way.”

He slowly dropped his hands to his sides, still keeping them out where she could see them and watching her steadily. If she looked like she was about to shoot, he’d at least have the split second to either try to dodge (he didn’t have much confidence in that; he'd seen how fast she was with that bow) or activate his power and throw some decent effort into it before running. It’d just be a shame he’d have to leave his shopping here.

Post by Marian Mon Jan 28, 2013 2:31 am

She eyed him momentarily then gave a curt nod and turned to the other man, stalking over to him with a smooth, predatory stride. Her bow was hooked onto the quiver as she walked and one hand slipped into a pocket.

Marian just watched the man, ignoring the way he spat curses at her in between cries of pain. After a handful of seconds, she leaned down to reach for the arrow when he lashed out with that spare knife. Twisting lightly as she leaned back, her hand slid free from her pocket and her wrist snapped out. The collapsible baton in her hand sprang to its full length and she swung it around, breaking the man's other wrist with a loud crack. This was followed up by her boot heel slamming into his shoulder and knocking him back.

"That was a rather foolish move." She crouched next to his head, baton hanging loosely in her hand. "Now, where is the file drive? Tell me honestly and quickly, and you might make it to medical attention." Left unsaid was that he likely wouldn't survive if he lied to her or otherwise didn't cooperate.

She listened to him babble, piecing out that it was at his apartment and he didn't know what was on it. When he started to repeat himself and beg for help, her hand just flashed out again and she knocked him out, catching him under the jaw to do so, then she found his keys and straightened, turning to look at Samson again as she collapsed the weapon and slipped it away.

"Why were you fighting him?"

Post by Helios Wed Jan 30, 2013 1:55 am

Samson let out a silent breath when the woman finally turned away, a fraction of his tension leaving with it. Some people just had that intimidating ‘don’t mess with me’ sort of air, and she was definitely one of them. A nice trait for deterring criminals, possibly? Too bad it pretty much killed approachability, so he’d have to pass on that.

Now that she was distracted – no, that didn’t seem like a good word to use. More like, ‘paying slightly less attention to him than before but is probably still capable of turning around and shooting him at a moment’s notice’, except that wasn’t one word and was probably too long for practical use.

No, he needed to concentrate on the priorities. He was definitely in a lose-lose sort of situation, without knowing whether or not the woman would react violently to whatever he did.
He could always try slowly inching away and out the alley, though it’d take way too much time and she’d probably be done dealing with the almost-mugger by the time he moved two feet. Make a dash for it, perhaps? If he could get around the corner before she fired an arrow…yeah that wasn’t going to happen.

Samson almost (the guy did sort of deserve it, after all) winced in sympathy at the sound of the man’s good wrist losing that ‘good’ quality, the crack bringing his own attention to the thug and the woman very quickly. And despite knowing better, he couldn’t help but eavesdrop on them, not that the thug was making much sense. Still something about a file drive or whatever the woman had come here for.

He’d managed to move about three inches during the man’s babbling before the woman turned towards him as the other man enjoyed a dreamless sleep.

"Why were you fighting him?"

Well, that seemed like a weird question. Unless she thought that he’d been looking for the same file drive thingamajig. In which case, shit. Couldn’t someone defend himself without people getting all up in his case about it?

“ Nothing complicated, really,” was his reply, still with the same level of minute humor in a possibly fatal (to him) scenario.“He tried to rob me, so I stopped him. Can’t let people take advantage of a nice smile, after all.”

She quirked an eyebrow at that. Somehow she doubted that smile of his had anything to do with being taken advantage of. If anything, it was more likely to make things escalate.

Marian's gaze flickered over him, taking note of his height and stance and the brass knuckles he still wore. So, a close ranged fighter who would rather not fight if it could be avoided. Prudent of him. His wasn't a dextrous build but rather more for power - he likely could hit with a decent bit of force.

She started toward him, keeping her hands loose at her sides. Stopping several feet away, she saw with approval that he had tensed with her approach and was watching her warily. Smart.

"What is your name and your power?" The contacts were smart though not something many harbingers bothered with on a regular basis. They just weren't good enough to fool her and her perceptions, that pale glow showing through to her. No, she couldn't make out the true colors of his irises, the contacts concealed that much.

His eyes widened at the question before realizing it was a stupid move. There was no telling how good her sight was (she did notice his eyes, though that might’ve simply been because it was rather dark), but if she had spotted the movement, it’d only serve to confirm that he was, in fact, a harbinger. Even if she hadn't, he didn't think it'd be a good move to lie.

“Helios. Basic telekinesis, at the temporary cost of speech and hearing.” It was what he usually gave out when he was out looking for bounties, if he happened to encounter someone willing to team up. Safe enough, usually, but it definitely didn’t do much for him either, not in this case. The whole scenario was tipped much too far in the woman’s favor for him to be comfortable.

“Though, if I may, who’s asking?” he followed up, careful to keep his voice casual and as non-provoking as possible. He’d finally come to the conclusion that she was from a major gang(Silver Dust, that is, unless she was on business from another district, though it seemed unlikely if she was hanging around for so long); he didn't really think that the smaller ones would be allowed get far enough to deal with super secret and important file drives. Low-key as it was in recent times, Silver Dust was probably still strong enough to keep minor gangs in check. Not that he knew by personal experience.

He studied the woman as he waited for an answer, trying to gauge her thoughts from her expression and body language. More from the latter, really, as he couldn’t really see her face in this lighting.

Tilting her head lightly, Marian raised an eyebrow. Restitution as well, hm? That was both smart while being foolish at the same time. Smart if you were working with someone, foolish if they were a potential enemy - and downright dangerous with a confirmed one.

Keeping an eye on him, she slipped her hand into a different pocket and withdrew her phone, watching him tense then relax again. Pulling up the Index, one quick search later and she had his entry. "Samson Brandt. Harbinger type two. Offensive defensive power classification." She met his eyes as she exited the application and put her phone away. He was nervous, good. It meant that he had some survival instincts at any rate. And that he likely realized her point to not give out restitution because while it was rare for a power to be held by more than one person, there was only one instance she was aware of that the restitution was shared as well - and those individuals were twins so it was likely just an anomaly.

The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP] Empty Re: The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP]

Post by Helios Fri Feb 01, 2013 1:39 am

He hated having to be so suspicious at her every move, but he supposed that feeling simply came with having control of the situation taken out of his hands. Samson wished that she could’ve just killed him and be done with it already. Okay, maybe not such an extreme solution.

He arched one eyebrow, the other following a moment later before his eyes narrowed and fists tightened as he listened to her list off information. Someone who actually used the Index, hm? No wait, someone who actually used easily-accessible public information, hm?

“Sounds about right,” he murmured. “Nice of the government to keep an eye on mutants like me, don’t you think?” His light smile said one thing, but the underlying sarcasm said another thing entirely, though it certainly was not directed towards her. The fact that he could be caught as a harbinger by the Index was always frustrating – not that she didn’t already know that, but it certainly made getting work harder. Having to look for employers that were either too stupid or lazy to look people up (likely) or for ones that didn’t discriminate against harbingers (unlikely) was a serious pain.

(Only later that night would the implications of her getting that information – and therefore have the ability to find people he valued ever so slightly more than himself – become clear to him, and only then would he revise what sort of information was safe to give out. That, and it would further solidify his distaste for the Index.)

"As to who I am, Griffin."

Ah. Ah ha. Hahaha. Griffin, really? She was kidding, right? She had to be kidding, there was no way…

But the words were only to crush the rise of inevitable surprise (read: “what the hell have I gotten myself into”) before it could be outwardly expressed and no doubt worsen his situation. They were to force himself to be calm by replacing negativity with some form of positivity, flimsy as it was, and to stop him from hastening his demise.

Of course she wasn’t joking around. No one would use that alias, not anywhere in the City and most definitely not in the West District. Unless they happened to live under a rock and know literally nothing about the gangs that ruled the Substratum, no one that wanted to live for more than two seconds would use ‘Griffin’ and be serious about it. Not unless they were the real deal.

And he was fairly ready to believe that she was the real deal.

“Oh,” he simply said. “Well, I guess that makes this little encounter quite a bit more interesting.”

Her lips pulled into a small, approving smile. He clearly recognized the alias but had enough control of his facial expression to hide his surprise and unease. It still carried through in his body language though. Most people likely wouldn't have seen it, but that was one of the things she was known for - seeing things that others missed.

She started in his direction, posture relaxed, and stopped next to his groceries, bending to pick it up then look at him again. Raising an eyebrow, she half turned and tilted her head, clearly telling him to follow her as she started toward the street again. "Would you mind dragging him out to the street for me?" she asked over her shoulder, curious what he would do.

Stepping out onto the sidewalk, she glanced around, noting that it was deserted already, not even cars driving past. Joy. That meant that they'd have to actually move him somewhere he could receive treatment. She had said that if he cooperated he could have medical help after all.

The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP] Empty Re: The Ruffian, the Griffin, and the Sun [Samson, Marian] [SD Joining RP]

Post by Helios Sat Feb 02, 2013 1:49 am

He kept his eyes on her at all times, no longer quite trusting what he could deduce from her body language. Funny how knowing someone’s identity changed everything. Still, there wasn’t any flash of blades or anything, so…

Hey wait, that was his!

He wondered if this was just some weird convoluted plan to rob him of his shopping.

Samson bit back a sigh, meeting her eyes when she looked right at him and watching her walk away. He wasn’t sure how wise it would be to disobey an order, silent or not, from Silver Dust’s boss. Plus she had his stuff.

He headed after her, though paused and glanced at the unmoving man when she spoke. He would’ve been content to just leave the guy there, really. Instead he shrugged, walking over to the man and kneeling besides him, adjusting his brass knuckles so they’d be as out of the way as possible without actually taking them off.

Out of curiosity he touched two fingers to the man’s neck, finding a pulse, albeit weak. Right, that was important, mostly because he wanted to know if he would be moving a corpse or lucky bastard. It’d be the difference between taking care to not injure the guy further and not giving a damn.

Now was the question of whether to carry the guy or literally drag him out of the alley. It only took him a second to determine that the former would dirty his hands and clothes further – though he already had cuts in his clothing and bloodstains here and there, so it really wouldn’t matter – and the man was likely too heavy to carry comfortably. So the latter it was, and he grabbed the collar of the man’s shirt, straightening up and dragging him along as he followed Griffin.

The streets were relatively brighter than the alley, with light from the moon and streetlamps unhindered by shadows of buildings. Shifting his hold on the man slightly, he took the opportunity to briefly get a better look at the woman, though staying a somewhat safe distance away from her. It wasn’t every day that he would meet someone of her infamy, after all.

Looking away before she could turn and catch him, he marked the same emptiness of the roads as she did. It was probably a good thing, seeing as he had an unconscious and injured man as luggage.

The answer to his question became evident in short order as she stopped on a corner and lifted a hand to point at a shelter across the street. "Just take him to the door and knock then walk away. They'll see to it that he gets where he needs to go."

Marian turned to look up at him, light falling over her face to highlight one unnatural eye and the raised eyebrow above it even as half her face was thrown into even harsher shadows. It was an interesting contrast that showed two sides of her - the respectable woman she presented during the day and one of the Bosses that had so many people wary at night.

It was clear that she was going to wait for him on the corner and that if he wanted his things back, he'd have to do what she wanted. And she watched him the entire time, apparently at ease. When he rejoined her, she turned and started to walk, his bag still in her hand.

"Are you part of any gangs?" she asked idly as they walked.

He looked over at the building, shrugging again before heading across the road with the man in tow. As long as Samson wouldn’t have to deal with the thug for much longer, he didn’t really care where the guy ended up.

After gingerly placing the man on the sidewalk in front of the building, he stepped closer to the door, shifting his weapon again to rap the back of his fingers sharply against the wood. He hoped whoever was inside would hear it, but again, it wasn’t his problem. He turned and walked quickly away, tucking his hands into his jacket pockets as he headed back to Griffin.

When he was just close enough, he swore he could see a dash of color in her eyes that he hadn’t noticed earlier. He couldn’t be too sure, but it wouldn’t surprise him if she was a harbinger (and now that he thought about it, he’d be more surprised if she wasn’t, considering that she was a gang boss).

She turned away again, and he hurried to follow, glancing at the bag of groceries every once in a while, wondering what she wanted from him. Before he could ask, though, she was talking once again.

“Are you part of any gangs?”

“Nope.” Good thing too, since he didn’t want to give her a reason to strangle him with his own shopping.

Marian nodded slowly then stopped and turned to look up at him, eyes calculating. After a moment, she nodded again, clearly to herself this time. "Hit me. Physically, not with your power," she ordered.

And that sputtering was the exact response she was expecting. She watched him for a short while, concealing her amusement, before she sighed softly and lifted her free hand to silence him. "If you manage to hit me, I will be greatly surprised. And, if you do, I will not hold it against you since I have just told you to do it. Pretend I am male or that I have attacked you if that helps you any." She gestured for him to make his attempt, standing calmly and relaxed.

What he chose to do now would tell her a great deal, likely more than he thought it would. She would be able to see what some of his physical capabilities were as well as if he was going to hesitate for any reason other than because she was a boss.

Post by Helios Sun Mar 24, 2013 1:31 am

Whatever Samson was expecting, it certainly wasn’t “here hit me but you probably can’t because I’m cool and you’re held down by this silly thing called morals”. Maybe something along the lines of “here run along now go home before you do something to anger me” or even “here’s a really sketchy job and if you do it I will reward you by not hurting the people you love”. Oh, why couldn’t it have been the first one?

Still, she clearly gave him permission hit her, so… why not? Actually, there was a whole list of reasons why “not”, many of which dealing with his survival. Someone with half a brain probably would’ve stopped to consider them, but then again someone with half a brain wouldn’t have gotten into this situation in the first place.

He shrugged ever so slightly, more to assure himself than to answer Griffin. Considering that she seemed so sure of herself – and rightfully so – he didn’t bother to remove his brass knuckles before stepping forward, closing the short distance between them and throwing a punch at her face.

One eyebrow raised a minute bit as she waited, not moving as he approached. All that she did with that first punch was lean her head back, turning just enough that he didn't even graze her skin, though she felt the air move from the force he had put into it.

Good. He was smart enough to think twice but not so hesitant to attack with anything less than full effort once he had decided that he would. That showed he wasn't likely to underestimate his opponent and that would keep him alive for the most part. Knowing which fights to avoid would as well.

One finely arched eyebrow rose and she darted one hand out to lightly tap his stomach. "You're leaving yourself open," she pointed out, taking a step back to watch him again. "Fix it and try again. Unless, of course, you're afraid. Then by all means, feel free to walk away." Yes, she really had just taunted him. Of course, anyone looking at them would likely laugh to see someone of his stature fleeing from a thin woman like her.

He pulled away from her touch, keeping his feeling of disconcertion hidden as best he could. Good intentions or not (he had yet to figure out what to classify them as), it was always unsettling to have someone point out his weaknesses. He supposed he’d just have to count himself lucky that Griffin preferred to do so with words rather than, say, that baton of hers.

Still, Samson couldn’t help but frown slightly at her taunts, though not out of irritation but rather bemusement. Did she really think he needed any pressure beyond her mere presence? What sort of person wouldn’t listen to this woman, especially after watching her knock a guy out? Well, probably someone with a gun, but he certainly did not have any firearms on him.

When he moved forward again, he aimed for her collarbone – more comfortable for him, and she would actually have to move more than her head – and followed it up immediately with another punch from his opposite hand before stepping back, keeping both his gaze and his fists forward.

The Fringe boss suppressed a light smirk at his frown. Anger, confusion, either was fine by her and both could serve to trip up a person in a fight; it was just a question of how and what mistake was made.

She took a half step back to avoid the first swing - much easier and more practical than leaning back - and lifted a hand to deflect the second to the side. "Why are you not pressing your advantage? You attack and step back again. If it hasn't occurred to you yet, I am attempting to assess you."

She let out a light breath then shifted her weight. "If you will not attack, then defend," was the only warning she gave before moving forward and lashing out at him, keeping her barehanded attacks slow enough that he could see and dodge them while still being quick enough to press him back, herding him toward the wall. She was curious if he would fall back or hold his ground and if he was going to retaliate in any way. She finished her flurry of attacks by dropping and sweeping her leg around, intending to knock him on his back.
