comment:

When it came to official cases off the bulletin, Evan wasn't often hired or consulted by the detectives and the attourneys of the city. It did happen occasionally, however, when extra persons were needed for more expansive cases- and it was him and other PI's snapping at each other and constantly trying to get ahead and work together all at the same time. Exhausting work, but dependable pay, and though it would put food on the table, Evan wasn't all too enthustiastic about it.

Still, it would help his reputation (so he tried to convince himself), and it was work he had to do (damn rents, damn bills), and it was an interesting case (Three of four family members committed 'suicide', and the last surviving member was a teen and registered harbinger with empathetic abilities) and it wasn't long before Evan finally got his things together and tried to pull his resources for some decent investigation. Tracking was his strong suit, of course, but somehow he'd still hit a dead end. The only thing that made him feel better was that nobody else was having any luck. He had mixed feelings about his and his colleagues' lack of success (the poor kid, he must be going through absolute hell), but in the end, he decided to relent and contact one of the more reputed intel gatherers for a small private conference meeting... And she would be getting a cut of his pay for her assistance, of course.

Kyna was her name, and though he had not ever done business with her before, he had heard good things about her through the grapevine. The meeting was arranged in the West District, in one of the public parks. Not that he minded- it was in the late evening, and so the hotter summer weather was just laxing up a bit, and it was a relatively calming setting compared to many of the more compact urban areas of the district.

When Evan arrived, he cut across the small grassy lot of trees and playscapes to a shaded corner of the park, where stone benches were arranged around stone tables. Stone chess tables, to be exact. He was early, and just for fun he'd brought his own set- he used the extra minutes to set up a game.

So I heard... [Evan and Kyna] Empty Re: So I heard... [Evan and Kyna]

Spoiler:

Over the years since she had started working for the information business, Kyna found that it paid pretty well (most of the time) and that she didn’t normally have to take a lot of bounty jobs. Certainly there were times where she could use a little extra cash – especially since Charna was a pig of a cat -, but since she was willing to provide intel to all class of individuals or groups, she had a pretty good sized clientele and didn’t run into financial troubles too often. That’s not to say she was rich, but she could get along comfortably.

The other day, however, she was contacted by a Private Investigator from East District – Evan Chully – about providing some information on a case he was working on. Even though she wasn’t in need of extra cash, she wasn’t one to turn down someone who needed some help, so she had agreed to meet the man in one of West District’s parks.

Kyna fiddled with her phone as she walked, checking to see if she had any news in relation to some other things she was working on. Finding she didn’t, the brunette checked the time – she had roughly twenty minutes until their scheduled meeting – and then shoved the device into her pocket. She decided to enjoy the walk as it had been a rather warm day and it was finally starting to cool off.

“About time,” Kyna muttered to herself as she turned down another street, “Stupid restitution…”

The sky blue-eyed female covered the remaining blocks and entered the park with ten minutes to spare. She made her way towards the stone chess tables they were supposed to meet at, her footsteps making almost no sound on the grass. Nearing the tables, Kyna spotted a blonde man playing a game of chess by himself.

“Evan Chully, I presume?” she asked as she neared the table. Although she was quite certain it was, it didn’t hurt to check.

Evan jumped, his heart skipping a beat in his chest when Kyna had piped up. Jesus! He hadn't even heard her coming- he glanced over, smiling sheepishly, hoping his initial fright hadn't been... too obvious. He glanced back at the table, and started putting pieces back to where they belonged.

"Yes,"
a chuckle, though slightly nervous still-- his heart had yet to settle back into a normal pace. "Please, call me Evan, Ms. Abendroth. Would you take a seat?" He motioned to the stone bench across from him, and gave a pleased smile when he'd finally reset the chess game, moving the first piece on his side- just the knight.

"You're prettier than I imagined,"
he commented nonchalantly. "It's nice to see you in person." He wasn't lying- and her taste in dress wasn't too shabby either (not that Evan was a prime example of style, but still). She was more colorfully dressed than he was, for sure, and the feathers were a nice color accent for her eyes. She was petit compared to Evan himself, but that wasn't very surprising. "Do you mind if I just call you Kyna?" He obviously didn't feel the rush to get straight to business. Cracking his fingers, Evan leaned back and adjusted his gloves.

She saw the blonde man jump slightly at her question, and she quickly apologized.

“Sorry,” Kyna said with an light smile, “I’m a pretty quiet walker do to my job. I didn’t mean to startle you,”

The brunette took the seat opposite Evan as he reset the chessboard. She wasn’t the greatest player - she was far more defensive then offensive, leading her to hardly ever make a move to take a piece, but being able to draw matches out for quite a while. She did enjoy the game though.

“You’re prettier then I imagined.”

Kyna’s eyes widened slightly. She wasn’t used to being complimented, apart from her ability to do her job, so she was caught off guard by the comment. She was happy it was getting dark out because she wasn’t sure if her face had gone a bit pink or not. She hoped it hadn’t.

”Thank you, and it’s nice to meet you too,” the blue-eyed female said with a smile. “And Kyna is fine.”

She dropped her gaze from Evan to the chessboard; he’d moved one of his knight pieces. Studying the board for a minute, Kyna decided to simply move one of her middle pawns forward one spot.

“I’m guessing you’re not in a hurry to get the information you want,” she said as she crossed her arms on the table waiting for Evan to make his next move. Kyna herself wasn’t in a rush, so it didn’t bother her either way.

"Well, if you're not in a rush, I don't think I need to be in a rush either, right?" He paused, studying the board before moving another piece- one of the pawns near his other knight piece. Apparently, he favoured those.

"People in this city always rushing, rushing, rushing. I like to think I'm one of the few who can sit back and enjoy something of life."
]He spoke quietly, smiling slightly, the tone of his voice making it clear that he was trying to sound smart or wise. Trying too hard, maybe. "I have a lot of spare time, anyway." He sighed, fidgeting with his gloves again, pulling at the cuff of his sleeve occasionally.

"So. How's your day been so far? On the way over here, I saw a pond. Know if there are any ducks?"
He attempted to start some sort of small talk. He visited the parks in the East District during his walks, so there wasn't much of a reason for him to come to other grassy lots in other parts of the city on a daily or weekly basis. Most of them were about the same, anyway.

“True,” Kyna nodded, “I’ve noticed that too, though I can’t say I’m surprised in regards to my clients; most of them are eager to get the information they want and be on their way.” She looked at the board and thought about her next move. “I agree that people should slow down and enjoy the small things in life more; coffee with friends, dinner with family and loved ones,” She smirked slightly and glanced up from the board and at Evan, “Chess with strangers, etcetera.”

Deciding on her move, Kyna pushed the pawn in front of her Queen forward two spots. She didn't really have a strategy as of yet; she liked to observe her opponent for a few turns and try and figure out their style of play first....which was probably why she didn't win very often; she was too busy understanding her opponents tactics to really devise her own for the game.

“My day was alright,” the brunette said as she rested her head on her hand and awaited her next move, “I managed to get some intel on a group who murdered an elderly couple and brought it to the attention of the police, and I bought my cat a new toy."

She paused and thought for a moment. "….I’ve seen the occasional duck in the pond, but this park is mostly squirrel turf.” Kyna tilted her head in question, “And how was your day?”

She decided it was her turn to pose a question. “What's your favourite chess piece, and why?" the blue-eyed female asked. She was a master of asking exceedingly random questions, but they often helped her understand people a bit better.

He returned her smirk with a smile, hand coming up to his mouth in thought as he watched her make the next move. Well, if they were going to be moving pawns, he could move one of the pawns barring movement for his bishops... but he decided to cut to the chase, moving his leftmost knight forward again.

"Intel and a cat toy?"
He chuckled- well, that was a very nonsequitor line of events, but both were good things he supposed. A part of him wanted to pry for more about both stories, but he figured maybe later.

"I see. That's alright I suppose."
Duck eggs were delicious and "free" given you could find them, but ducks were vicious, evil things. Squirrels were not any less evil, but... Still, he shrugged. "My day's been good. Very easy." When he was not working he was lazing, and when he was not lazing he was working. Evan's life was, in his opinion, not all that exciting. Which was fine with him. He was just glad that his job wasn't boring as hell. "The ride over here went without a hitch. I got a snack, even." He shrugged as conversation paused, and then the girl piped up first.

“What's your favourite chess piece, and why?"

"Hah. You're not trying to get an advantage on me, are you miss?"
He eyed the bored, and then smiled back at her again, mostly joking. "I guess I like knights. Erratic movements, people tend to miss a lot about them. They're not easily trapped." He shrugged, gesturing to the knight he had just moved moments before.

“Yep.” Kyna grinned, “That’s what the best kind of days are comprised of for me.” She watched Evan move his knight piece again before adding, “And the worst days often involve bruises, blood, and possibly running for my life. But, c’est la vie,” she smiled lightly, “Or at least that’s my life.”

“There’s a park a couple blocks from here that has a bigger pond and a fair few ducks if you’re interested,”
Kyna said as she contemplated what piece to move. Ducks weren’t her favourite animal – they were rather cute though -, but she loved that park because so many stray cats lived or visited it. She would often spend evenings there before going to work and just watch the fluffy animals be adorable dorks. Quite often she'd also bring them a bit of food, much to Charna's disapproval.

The brunette laughed, “No; I just love to ask strange questions. You tend to get more truthful answers from them as people haven’t rehearsed the answers.” She moved the pawn in front of her Kingside Rook forward two spaces. “My favourite piece is the bishop.” She said as she sat back in her chair, “I like that they travel in weird ways, and can be sneaky; they can cover a few spots, or charge the length of the board and take a piece before your opponent even notices.”

Just then, her phone went off. Kyna grabbed the navy device from her pocket and checked the screen; a text. Pressing it, she quickly read its contents. “Huh…” she muttered, lost in thought.

"Isn't that just the truth." He smiled back, though it was a bit thin- well, what were bruises and bumps when money was involved, right? Then again, money disappeared faster than bruises did, it felt like.

He shrugged slightly to her suggestion involving the parks. "Eh-- I might check it out if I still have time later." Probably not, though. It wasn't any fun if you didn't have any bread. No, if he was going to visit another park any time soon, it would probably be one closer to his home.

He watched Kyna move another piece, and the conversation continued on.

“No; I just love to ask strange questions. You tend to get more truthful answers from them as people haven’t rehearsed the answers.”

Evan rested his chin on his hand as he listened to her reply- well, maybe it was a shot in the dark, but it sounded like a piece preference could reflect a little bit about a person, too. This was an informant he was talking to- out of everyone else, she supposedly knew how to get what she wanted to know.

Her phone went off just as he began to move one of his pawns- didn't want to put his knights in any compromising situations right away- and Evan paused, letting go of the piece and sitting back again.

"What's up?"

Kyna looked up from her phone and blinked, coming back from her thoughts.

“Hmm? Oh. Well…” she paused as she reread the message to make sure she got it right, “Apparently the case you’re working on isn’t the first of its kind. An acquaintance of mine has found a second eerily similar case that took place in West District a month ago.” She held her phone out to Evan, “That’s the police report there, if you wanted to take a look at it yourself.”

After pocketing her phone, she looked at the blonde man, “We should probably get started on the real reason for our meeting, no?” she asked. “Why don’t you tell me what you know and have found out, and I’ll fill in some gaps afterwards?” she gave him a half smile, “No point in you paying me if I can’t give you any information you don’t already know.”

Leaning back in her chair, Kyna motioned at the board, “Go ahead an make your move. We can still play as we discuss the case; it’s probably going to take awhile anyway,”

Evan nodded as she spoke, glancing at the cell phone, then taking it when it was offered to him. "Hm... Well that certainly is helpful--" He glanced over the contents of the report only briefly before handing it back to her- he could get a copy later. He mostly noted the report name and number for future reference. If it was a past case, it wouldn't be too hard to get his hands on it.

“We should probably get started on the real reason for our meeting, no?”

"Of course." He nodded in agreement, smiling. "Well, there's the basics of the case, of course. There haven't been any further pseudo-suicides, but the criminal is an empath- any number of events could be triggered, I suppose. He was last seen making his way down to the South District-- to blend in, maybe. But it's possible he may just be moving around in general. Besides that, I don't have much." He reached out and moved another pawn, to open up space for his bishop. "Ah, right. There is his registered information too, of course. His restitution involves mental deterioration-- that is, he's very unstable. People were keeping an eye on him, but didn't expect him to disappear so suddenly, and so quickly."
