He really should find a better job. Maybe if he did he wouldn’t be sitting in a practically collapsing building trying to tie a semi-clean rag around his bleeding arm. The gang member who had paid him a measly 5 credits had had his arm nearly cut off. Trevor uttered a muffled grunt of pain into the cloth between his teeth, tightening the knot with a final tug.

He examined his handiwork, it would probably still bleed for a while but his arm would be out of commission for only a few days. Rolling his sleeve back down over the arm, he pushed himself off the dirt covered floor and patted his clothes in a futile attempt to completely remove the layer of dirt that usually accompanied the inhabitants of the dirt broke. He winced with the movement and started to walk out from the building. Jeez, he’d go after bounties for money but his strength was only slightly above average at best and he knew his harbinger power was completely useless in a fight. He wandered aimlessly a bit, the south district was huge and he never felt comfortable staying in one place too long.

He heard something, not exactly sure if the sound was a voice or some movement but his hand went instinctively to the switchblade in his pocket, he called out a cautious “Hey.”

Shade cursed with what breath she could spare from running. She hadn't meant to insult those men - it wasn't like she knew that telling them the way they were posturing was a likely indicator that they were either impotent or homosexual would piss them off. Obviously, she still had quite a bit to learn in regards to human interactions.

Taking a quick turn, she hurtled down an alley. For once, she was happy to be a harbinger since the tall fence looming ahead would normally take someone a bit of time to clamber over. With a quick application of her power, she was able to hurl herself up the ramp that had appeared in front of her.

Biting out another swear as she landed with a clatter, she ignored the new throbbing in her ankle and threw herself around a corner. And promptly had to put the brakes on to avoid running into the tall male in front of her. She stared at him in surprise, heaving for breath as she was taking in his two tone hair and mostly dark clothes.

Trevor himself almost tripped over himself stepping backwards on reflex as a person suddenly appeared to fly out from behind the corner and crash into him. A look of shock was quickly replaced by a frown. Glare aimed down at the strange girl “What are you in such a hurry for?” Wearing a heavy black hoodie and tinted glasses in the middle of summer was suspicious enough, and Trevor always chose the side of caution.
He tightened his grip on blade in his pocket, wishing he was not out an arm at this moment. Was she a harbinger too? It might explain the tinted glasses.

Just about to apologize, his question cut her off.

Shade shrugged and glanced over her shoulder. "Oh, you know, pissing people off and running for my life. Five against one isn't odds that I like to take," she responded, somewhat absently and as if it was one of her friends in front of her, not a complete stranger. Hearing that they hadn't given up, she turned back to the man. "Running probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't think they really care who they beat the crap out of."

Eying him again, and taking in how he was holding himself, she assumed he was hurt in someway. "You go. I'll hold them off," she said, adding, "Though this is going to hurt," under her breath.

Not quite sure why she was so willing to stand between him and the others, Shade nevertheless turned to face the way she had come, right hand tugging something off of her left wrist.

“H-hey I can defend myself just fine girl!” He replied rather dumbly in response to her unexpected reply. Like hell he was going to let some chick fight while he ran, even if she was a harbinger. He could hear voices not far off. Angry voices that sounded like a pack of angry dogs to Trevor.

“Agh, dammit…” With gritted teeth he grabbed the girl by the wrist and started running in the other direction, ignoring the searing pain his arm was replying in protest. He might not be that strong but he had stamina and long legs let him run fast. He ran down a few random alleys in some crazy pattern trying to confuse their pursuers with the crazy trail.

He could only keep up the pace for so long though and nearly collapsed when he rounded some corner. Breathing heavy and dizzy. He didn’t hear any chasing at least. Oh yeah there was the girl too. Blue eyes flashed over to the other figure, she better be grateful for all that running he just did. Though honestly he was too overexerted to really care what she might say anyways.

Shade ignored his “H-hey I can defend myself just fine girl!” since she was paying more attention to settling the weighted wire in her hand between both. So, since she had only a small portion of her awareness directed at him, he took her by surprise when he grabbed her wrist and started running.

Stumbling backwards the first few steps due to a combination of the sudden motion and needing to turn 180 degrees at the same time, Shade caught her balance and was able to run as well. Biting her lip at the pain from her ankle, she shoved the wire in her hoodie's pocket and tried to free her hand. Since he was faster than her, she was concerned with falling from the pace, but he was also stronger so it was all she could do to keep up.

When he finally stopped, she leaned back against the wall opposite him, gasping for breath. Putting as little weight as possible on her one leg, she lifted her head and met his eyes through tinted lenses.

"Uh..." What did you say to someone who had somewhat psuedo-kidnapped you?

It took him a full two minutes for him to get his breath back and for the buzzing in his head to clear. He straightened himself up to standing but still leaned heavily on the brick wall in the alley they were in. He couldn’t even feel his injured arm at this point and considering it probably wasn’t a good thing. “A thank you would be nice.” He stared down at the girl who was currently at a loss for words. Not that he could blame her really since it was his fault.

Now that they weren’t running he vaguely recognized her leaving that bakery in west district. He also noticed she seemed to be leaning her weight on one side and off her other foot. Had she injured it when they were running or something? He felt a twinge of guilt and pointed at the ankle, “For a few credits I can take care of that for you also.”

"A thank you would be nice."

Shade blinked. "Oh! Um, thanks," she parroted, not quite sure why she thanking him. When he pointed at her ankle and offered to help it, she glanced down and shrugged. "I guess, but it'll be fine in a week or so. I just wasn't ready to run on it."

She looked back up at him, tilting her head slightly as she began to absently pluck at her hood. She pulled it up again, the wind from their sprint having tugged it off, and covered her short dark brown hair before she pulled herself up onto a dumpster to give him better access.

Watching him reach for her ankle, she spoke up. "Hey, you're a guy." And what a way to state the obvious there. "Could you answer a question for me?"

“Oh, Um, thanks,” He shrugged, he didn’t mean for her to take his remark seriously. He watched her pull that dark hood up and hop onto the dumpster. Strange, she looked pretty pale and Trevor thought she could use some sun maybe, not that he was one to talk with his almost sickly pale complexion that plagued him no matter how much time he was outdoors.

He bent down partially and lifted the hem of her pant leg just enough so he could see her ankle was swelling, definitely sprained but not broken. He just touched his fingers to the bare skin and winced when the expected pain flooded his own ankle and any indication of injury on the girls disappeared instantly. He dropped his hand and stood back up; choosing a stance that hid his pain better than the girl had done earlier.

“There you’re fine now.”

Waiting for him to respond and watching as he looked at her ankle, she pulled the wire from her pocket again, starting to coil it together. She winced at the swelling that had already started - apparently it was a bit worse than she had thought.

When he somehow healed her ankle instead of wrapping it like she had expected, the oddly cool draining sensation startled her. Jerking away in surprise and just about falling off the dumpster with the motion, her jaw dropped as she stared at him. Prior to this month, she couldn't remember meeting any harbingers (putting aside Blanch) and now she had encountered several.

"You're a harbinger too?" she demanded, voice half an octave higher than normal. She wasn't sure how she felt about him using his power on her without giving her more info first, but... She was grateful. There wasn't much more to it than that now that she was over the initial shock.

Realizing how her reaction could be taken, how she would have and had taken it before, she slid off the dumpster in front of him.

"Thank you," she said sincerely, offering a shy smile up to him.

He reflexively went to take a step forward when it looked like she was about to fall off the dumpster in her shock but then she caught herself, albeit with a look of shock on her face. He shifted back to his previous stance; well at least it was better than some of the reactions he’d received in the past.

“You’re a harbinger too?” So he was correct in his earlier assumption that she was one. So maybe the reason her voice had suddenly gone reached dog whistle level was out of surprise from meeting someone like her. Trevor himself was a little shocked that she was one too.

“Thank you,” Now that was unexpected. Trevor just stared at that… coy smile aimed towards him. “U-uh, it’s no problem…” the words clumsily tumbling out of his mouth. He’d never really… had someone genuinely thank him before. And he really had no idea how to respond right now.

"So, you can heal? That's helpful. Can you heal yourself?" She moved closer, pushing up on her toes to better peer at his face. Shade was completely oblivious to personal space at the moment, trying to see the exact shade of his eyes, a difficult proposition through her dark goggles. "You could pass for a regular person," she murmured.

She dropped back onto her heels. "Hm. That's... kind of neat." She glanced down, finished with coiling her wire, and slid it around her left wrist, snapping the clip shut and letting go of the oddly shaped metal hanging from the ends so it appeared to be nothing more than an odd bracelet. Looking up again, Shade reached into her pocket and pulled out some credits.

"What would you like?" she asked with another smile.

“U-uh…” Reeling back as the girl was increasingly getting closer and invading his personal space. He turned his face at an awkward angle, trying to hide the bright blue under his bangs. “N-no I can’t and back off…please.” How the hell was he supposed to deal with a person like this? She backed off quickly though but her next comment made it clear she’d probably seen his eyes anyways.

“You could pass for a regular person.” It was a murmured remark not directed towards Trevor but he heard it anyways. He dropped his gaze back down, noticed her fiddling with…wire? He watched with some interest as she messed around with some metal parts and let it hang from her wrist, disguising it as a piece of jewelry. If she was a harbinger too the weird wire thing was probably related to her power.

“What would you like?” Another smile. “Ah, no… it’s…fine. No charge.” The words came out before he could really process why he was declining money.

Realizing that she had made him uncomfortable, Shade dropped her gaze and blushed slightly. She was always so horrible with people. "Sorry," she whispered, one hand drifting to fiddle with the sleeve on her other arm.

Taking a step back and visibly gathering herself, she looked up at him again. "I can't just let you heal me for nothing, especially since I don't know what it's done to you. Giving you some credits like you originally said is the least I could do." She fidgeted, shifting her weight before sighing slightly. "Plus, I owe you for helping me get away. I don't think I would have made it far with that ankle if you hadn't been dragging me along. And if they had caught me..." Trailing off, she thought of how she'd most likely have needed to use her power to defend herself, and it was all too easy for her to go just that little bit too far. She had done it before.

Separating some of the credits from the rest, she held them out toward him but didn't move closer.

“Sorry,” Oh shit did he say something wrong? “I-it’s fine.” Should he be the one apologizing? Her voice had gotten all quiet and bashful all of a sudden. He ran a hand through his hair, usually his face was stoic as a grave but subtle uncomfortable movements revealed how really terribly awkward he was at interacting. “I-it was just instinct I grabbed you…you shouldn’t really be thanking me…” Ok now he was just practically rambling nonsense.

Her voice trailed off though, he looked at her more seriously. He understood in part. She was probably much more capable in a fight than he was but she seemed like the type that would rather not hurt anyone. Maybe she didn’t have full control over her powers yet.

He eyed the credits she was holding out, waiting for him to take. He reached out, hesitating with the thought that maybe he should continue to refuse… He accepted the money, shoving it in his pocket.

“Trevor… it’s my name by the way.” He kept his gaze to the side while he mumbled out a poor excuse for an introduction.

“I-it was just instinct I grabbed you…you shouldn’t really be thanking me…”

Instinct? Not many people had the instinct to help those they didn't know. Oh, there were plenty who had good intentions and did what they could to help, but when it came down to a dangerous situation, they didn't think of strangers, they thought of themselves or their family and friends.

When he took the credits and pocketed them, she lowered her hand and put the rest away. Suppressing a smile at how he didn't even look at how much she had given him, she had to lean a little closer to better hear his mumbling.

Leaning back again, she swept a look over him. "Shade. I answer to Shade." Looking down and to the side herself, she caught one elbow with a hand. "Thanks again Trevor. I really appreciate the help."

“Shade then.” Very… odd name. If it was actually her real name at that. He glanced back at Shade and she was holding her arm with one hand, not out of pain but a shy gesture. So maybe they were both awkward turtles then. “Like I said it’s nothing… though uh…Shade, are you part of… one of those ...gangs or something?” No offense, but he knew that all of them went by those weird codenames and such and Shade definitely sounded like one of them. Though she acted nothing like any of those criminals he imagined.

He shifted position to lean against the wall, it would heal soon enough but for now he really shouldn’t be putting too much weight on his newly sprained ankle.

Peering up at him through her hair poking out from under her hood, she hesitated before shaking her head. "No. I just..." she trailed off as she thought back to what had led to her choosing Shade for a name. Thoughts of her uncle made her imagine what he would have done if she had been a healer instead of having the power she did. Suddenly feeling, and looking, sick, she swallowed harshly. "There are some events in my past that I want to distance myself from. That's all." Now if only she could distance herself so easily from the memories and other thoughts...

Shuddering and shaking her head, clenching her eyes shut, she tried to banish the image of Trevor being tied down to one of those damn steel tables with all the equipment attached to him. He was being so nice to her, it definitely wasn't something he deserved.

"Anyway, it doesn't really matter now," she said, pretending that her voice wasn't shaking. "Are you okay?" was asked with a nod at how he was leaning against the wall.

“There are some events in my past that I want to distance myself from. That’s all.” Ah so that was it. He watched her as she seemed to flashback to some horrible memory. Tension that he didn’t know he was holding drained from Trevor though when she stated she was not in fact part of those gangs. Though bad memories of the past… He could relate far too well. All harbingers especially have some kind of tragic tale. Before he realized what he was doing he stuck out a hand and ruffled her hair. Although technically he was ruffling her hood since it was over her hair but it had the same general effect. He didn’t smile but his eyes kind of softened into one of mutual understanding.

The small gesture of gentleness only lasted a moment though, his hand retreated back into his pocket and his eyes hardened back into a cold stare. “I’m fine. It’ll heal soon.” His other arm though was probably a different case. It had bled through the makeshift bandage and his sleeve some time ago but the dark fabric and shadows of the alley had hidden it well.

Flinching slightly when his hand lifted and moved toward her head, it was all she could do not to throw herself away. With the memories of her uncle so close to the surface, she was going to be more skittish than normal. So, it came as a rather pleasant surprise when all he did was try to ruffle her hair even with the deep hood in the way. She was a little surprised at how his eyes had gentled for that brief bit of time - no one ever really looked at her like that.

“I’m fine. It’ll heal soon.”

Glancing up at the mostly darkened sky, she looked at Trevor again. "...Let me make sure you get home okay. Whether it heals quickly or not, it can't hurt, right?"

He was glad that she didn’t throw herself away from the touch or reject it, then he might’ve have been the one having old memories rise to the surface. He glanced up at the sky as well, it was way on its way to night and there was probably no adequate shelter near here.

"...Let me make sure you get home okay. Whether it heals quickly or not, it can't hurt, right?" He opened his mouth to decline the offer but he hesitated. He was out two limbs and in some random alleyway in the most dangerous district in the substratum. “…fine.” He moved beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder and leaning somewhat heavily on her. “I just need to find some place that’s sheltered.” He ‘d never spent more than a couple of months in one place since he was 12.

Shade was a little surprised he took her up on the offer, he seemed the independent sort. But then, independent didn't mean stupid.

When he set his hand on her shoulder and kind of leaned against her, she slipped under his arm, placing it around her shoulders, as she put her arm around his waist. She might be several inches shorter, but she knew how to help others walk. She'd been helped herself enough times.

"I think we're closer to West than East, right?" Helping him out to the street, she took a quick glance around and saw that it was indeed the case. "Okay. We're close enough that we may as well just walk. Going to the Metro would be a bit out of the way," she muttered. It was clear that she was talking more to herself than him.

Turning in the direction of the Emberwheat Bakery, Shade just hoped that the owner wouldn't mind them turning up like this.

The arrangement was made even more awkward and Trevor could feel a small flush rising up his neck that he hoped wasn’t visible. He was definitely not used to being this close in contact with someone longer than a few seconds and also he felt embarrassed being so useless.

“West? Why are you taking me all the way there?” He just needed an abandoned building or something and there were plenty of those around. But it’s not like he could really walk away on his own, so he was forced to continue leaning on Shade and let her lead to where ever they were going.

Trying to look up at him but having her hood get in the way made Shade huff. With her free hand, she reached up and took off her hood, shaking her hair out slightly. It was dark enough now, and getting darker, that her skin wouldn't burn. She tilted her head back and looked at him.

"I know someone who'd most likely be willing to help." She shrugged, a bit awkwardly since one shoulder was in his armpit, and adjusted her grip on his waist. "At the very least, we can get some food. I know I haven't eaten all day. Have you?" She turned her gaze forward again, keeping a wary eye out. She knew they would make a very tempting target.

“I told you I’d be fine!” He scowled and tried to separate himself away from her but her grip was firm. He really didn’t want anyone else involved, it just meant more debts to owe and unnecessary involvement with his life. He noticed Shade had pulled her hood down. Did it have to do something with the shift from day to night? He put it off as a possible restitution maybe.

"At the very least, we can get some food. I know I haven't eaten all day. Have you?" He remained silent, glaring off to the side like a stubborn child. Truth is he hadn’t eaten at all today either but he was used to it and it didn’t bother him too much.
