His face was one of shock when he saw who his partner was but his attention was only on her face for a second before turning back to the person within the organization giving them the package and instructions. The package itself was a foot in length, with a width of about three inches and an inch in depth. As he held the package out to Hoss he tested the weight in his hands. It had a good heft to it as if there had been some metal component to the insides of the package.

"8813 Beaumont Boulevard, Northern District. 11th floor, room 1108. You need to do this within four hours. Don't ask what it is. Don't open or damage the box. Don't put it under too much stress. Most importantly, do not let it get intercepted by Silver Dust or Oblivion."

"That it?" Hoss wanted to know if there was any more info. The reason for that being that he wasn't exactly one to go into a mission without every last detail he could gather without overstepping his bounds.

"Yeah, that's it Hoss. Unless you want me to call your mommy and get permission. Or maybe I'll tell you how I'd do the mission. You're a prospect, do the mission, show your worth, don't fuck up. Same goes for you."

The guy walked off as Hoss turned to look at the girl, "Uh, so just go ahead and call me Hoss, alright? What do you go by here? And more importantly, what kind of transportation do you have?"

He wasn't going to ride his bike unless he had to because the southern to northern route was a messy one that involved crossing into either the west or east districts first. Which meant gang activity on either side and a lot of ground to cover. The bike wasn't ideal but he could always bring it with if the girl had a vehicle that she drove. Once they were in the Northern District a bike may be preferable to a car anyway since a car limited you to the road and traffic laws. If you picked up a tail you weren't losing them any time soon unless you wanted to risk getting pulled over.

The only advantage to any of this was that the night meant that traffic would be easier going whether by car or by bike. The only other option was to take the public transportation system… which to be fair was kind of a mess. Doable, but risky if they ran into any gang members.

Well, this was certainly a strange meeting. Lumine had been assigned this mission specifically as guard duty. And for what exactly? A package no more than a foot in length. As Hoss took the package however, it was quite obvious it had a significant amount of weight to it. Probably piping, some other metallic device, component or whatnot. Lumine had no particular interest in what it was, nor did she have much interest in the mission they'd been assigned. Her abilities however, apparently complimented her partner's in some way or another. Lumine was never directly addressed until the very end, at which she raised an eyebrow. If they fucked up, Solstice would know it about it first no doubt.

The ensuing destruction would be...unfortunate.

It was a simple mission really. Travel across the city. Deliver a package. Don't start any trouble. Despite the rule that missions were to be completed only at night, Lumine thought that this would be one of the few missions better served during the day. Gang activity was quieter, and delivering packages was well...much simpler. Unfortunately, she didn't have much a choice in the matter. If this is when they wanted it done, it would be done.

"Aelio. You can keep calling me Lumi if you want. I have a vespa, but we'd be better served taking the underground. There's a train not far from here that goes straight to the north."

This would be better than taking a car anyhow. It was a direct line, less chance of interference from anyone. If something did happen, they wouldn't have much of an escape plan. Better that than being caught at all at least.

"I suggest we get going. Going across the city in four hours might be a pain, and I'd rather not be out that long anyways."

"Aelio. You can keep calling me Lumi if you want. I have a vespa, but we'd be better served taking the underground. There's a train not far from here that goes straight to the north." She was right of course, the train was going to be the fastest way there. The good thing about that was they wouldn't run into any interference unless they just happened to know what time they got in. There was a small chance that this was actually important and that intel may have leaked but the chances of it weren't too great. Most likely this would be a run of the mill and mundane delivery complete with lack of a tip at the end.

"Vespa, huh? I need to get one of those. Might fatten up if I do though. I guess you're right about the train. If nothing else it'll keep time from being so much of an issue. I'm gonna bring my bike onto the train though. Just in case." He had seen it done before and he himself had done it once or twice. It wasn't unheard of to take a bicycle on the train considering just how much traveling could be done via bike and public transportation. It was also much cheaper than buying or maintaining a vehicle. Sure he had the busted tire or bent wheel every so often but it was affordable and manageable to use his bike.

"I suggest we get going. Going across the city in four hours might be a pain, and I'd rather not be out that long anyways."

"Me neither." He knew that he wouldn't be using his power. Not right now, it'd be idiotic. The best time to use it would be sneakily if the need had presented itself. After all duplicates only lasted ten minutes anyway so it was best if done right before an attempt to intercept. He handed the package to Lumi before walking over to where he had set his bicycle against the wall of the parking garage. Solstice wasn't the sort of gang boss headquarters you'd expect. He still didn't believe this was it. It felt like they should be in a casino or something.

"Talking about the E street tunnel I'm guessing?" He pointed in the direction as he pushed his bike along, it was maybe a few blocks down and to the right, he had taken it before but it had been some time. He pushed along, getting to the subway train itself would probably be the easiest. "So, Solstice, huh?" He was curious. Maybe this was part of her research? Maybe this was how she got her grant? He could only guess unless she decided to tell him.

There wasn't a chance in hell that Solstice would entrust a couple of newbies with a package that was carrying some sort of critical information or whatever...at least, that was the thought in Lumine's mind. For all she knew, it was a simply a jack-in-the-box for some kid, or a joke for when the delivery crew decided an inspection was necessary. Or hell, maybe the thing was booby trapped. Was Lumine curious? Sure. But certainly not curious enough to risk betraying an organization if it WAS something important. Need to know basis and all.

"That's fine. There's little gang activity in the north, so as long as we stay on the direct line, we should be fine. Provided of course we don't pick up any angry passengers."

Oblivion and Silver were rival gangs, and while the two bickered and fought occasionally, they usually didn't tread into anyone's territory without good reason to do so. The line directly to the North was as safe, and quick, as it got. They would begin in the south, and never officially cross into some other gang's territory. Quite a perfect setup actually. Lumine took the package as Hoss grabbed his bike from the garage, and the pair headed out to walk the several blocks to their stop.

"Yeah, that's the one. Quite a convenient setup actually. Close to base, and one of the western stops is close to home. Makes travelling a breeze. Until you hit rush hour."

In a city of six million, rush hour was as expected, hell on Earth.

"They offered protection. I'm a harbinger, and a particularly...destructive one at that. It helps to have friends that understand and help you. Granted, this is more or less a trial run. I didn't see any 60-day money back guarantee, but I suppose it'll have to do. How about you?"

Three blocks to go.

"Angry passengers, crazy passengers, triggered-by-cardboard-box passengers," he jokingly listed out the different passengers they should avoid picking up. He had no idea what they would run into if anything but something seemed almost too mundane about this. Why was this package in need of a delivery? It was strange that it was entrusted to two lower ranks of the gang and not just put through postal services. Unless it was some sort of mundane drug that didn't have high street value so much as enough legal trouble that it wasn't worth risking the mail. That might explain it, that or it was just a simple test. A child's test to make sure they were at least competent. Hoss shook his head slightly.

"They offered protection. I'm a harbinger, and a particularly… destructive one at that. It helps to have friends that understand and help you. Granted, this is more or less a trial run. I didn't see any 60-day money back guarantee, but I suppose it'll have to do. How about you?" So she was destructive? It made him curious and at the same time it made him wish he'd never have to see or fully appreciate her ability. Destructive abilities by nature seemed a little chaotic to him. Not as harmful as destructive restitutions, but still nearly as bad. He had the benefit of having a relatively simple mutation with a relatively simple restitution. The rest was a breeze and he was discovering new things every day for his power.

"Gotta pay for tuition somehow, right?" He grinned before moving on, "No, I just need work to take care of myself. Been doing it for awhile now, taking jobs where I can find them. I could use the cash to support my father, I could use the regular work to keep distracted, and to tell you the truth it's just really kind of exciting in a fucked up way. I mean I could die doing this but I'll get to experience this neat sort of rebellious life that I'd have otherwise never really known. Maybe I read too many books."

He wasn't sure if this constituted as some sort of complex but he romanticized the idea of the prohibition era style gangs. He was kind of disappointed that Solstice was really just a parking garage with some loiterers but it was better than sitting at him being bored. Besides it was a nice steady flow of jobs where he would be working alongside some people. "I think I got a mind for crime too." He had thought about robbing institutions before, about how his abilities could come in handy during a heist. Everything from bullets to fake bills to access IDs and keys.

"If it gets too heavy for me I'll probably bounce though. I'm not as suicidal as I once thought I might have been. Slightly reckless but I guess my survival instincts are pretty good." The mission to get into Solstice had wrecked his shit but he somehow made his way to Trevor. He had convinced himself that he did so to use him for his ability and he had to admit that Trevor was able to help him.

One and a half blocks to go.

"You think this missions a front for something else entirely?"

Lumine couldn't help but laugh at Hoss' list of potential ne'er do wells on their upcoming trip on the train. Generally, the longer trains were not quite as bad as those that ran between the sub-districts, but those that did stay on, stayed on the whole way. As she thought of before, the pair was lacking an escape route if something went wrong. That said, the close-quarters nature of the train meant that it wasn't the pair that would need an escape route. More likely, it would be the aggressors. Lumine was confident of her abilities.

Now, if Hoss was actually trying to pay for tuition like this, he might have another thing coming.

"Does that actually mean you were serious about going to school? Or was I being played?"

She didn't care either way. Lumine had gotten free food out of the deal, and that in itself was good enough for her. At least his reasoning was sound. Lumine had come for protection, although to be fair, she got herself into more trouble than it found her. Having friends that had some punch was a pretty significant deal as well. Cash wasn't a huge deal. But eventually, she would find herself in trouble with her job, and having reinforcements, would be a boon sooner if not later.

"Heh, I think we both do. Crime really isn't my thing, but the city's police is so spread out, you kind of have to do it for the greater good. Sad really. I don't intend on staying around if Solstice decides to get as suicidal as you're implying this will be. That is, if you're implying that."

Lumi frowned a little. She wasn't quite sure exactly what her role in Solstice was, if there was one at all. She wasn't one for crime, but instead, ridding the city of those that had...strayed so to speak. Solstice was said to be the same way. You'd think it a match made in heaven. The mission pair however, were only grunts.

"Of course it's a front. If it wasn't, Solstice wouldn't have us run this. We're expendable at this point, and thus, this package is as well. On the other hand, we're not confirmed members of Solstice, so we might be the front. Who knows."

"Does that actually mean you were serious about going to school? Or was I being played?" Hoss chuckled at that, he didn't really give two shits if she knew. By now that mission was paid for and done with. He had gotten information and that was all he was hired to do. He did so without letting on that it was anything but a simple meal and some questions about registration while he was at it. Besides, the food was good so hopefully she wouldn't have any complaints other than being slightly creeped out that somebody might be stalking her or hiring other people to do so. Gangs members gotta look out for each other though, right?

"You were being played like a fiddle, Aelio. Some shmuck hired me to figure out what anonymous gifts you might be into or something. So heads up someone out there likes you enough to pay me fifty credits to see what you were interested in." He figured he could afford to be nonchalant about the whole thing considering what they were doing right now. If she was involved with this gang, however recent her involvement may have been, she was no stranger to some of the creepier requests one could find on the online bulletin. Hoss would probably be slightly paranoid if something similar had taken place for him though.

"Heh, I think we both do. Crime really isn't my thing, but the city's police is so spread out, you kind of have to do it for the greater good. Sad really. I don't intend on staying around if Solstice decides to get as suicidal as you're implying this will be. That is, if you're implying that." Solstice was suicidal, any gang or bounty was if you thought about it enough. Catching criminals as a bounty? Some of them with Harbinger abilities? Becoming one of those criminals? Your name could end up on that board for everything you do with Solstice. One day the bulletin could have your name and alias with that large amount of credits with the words dead or alive next to it.

"Eh, I guess no more suicidal than being a bounty hunter," he admitted. "Besides, back in the day they used to say that some gangs formed because there was no police force, they were the police and law. Corrupt, but they still kept things tight knit within their territories."

He wondered if he had time for a cigarette before going into the tunnel but it didn't seem that way as they came to the descending staircase. Hoss led the way down into it. "Of course it's a front. If it wasn't, Solstice wouldn't have us run this. We're expendable at this point, and thus, this package is as well. On the other hand, we're not confirmed members of Solstice, so we might be the front. Who knows."

"Well that confirms enough for me. You're definitely not an idiot." He grinned as he thought over the whole plan, his hands going into his pockets to pull a few credits out to purchase some tokens for the subway. He walked up to the machine and fed it the bills with the package tucked underneath his arm. "If we run into trouble we may have to split up. When we do I'll hand you a package. It's very important that when I do, you carry it like it holds weight and value. That is, unless you just want to confront any opposition we face, destructive ability and all."

He handed a token to Lumine as he led the way to the turnstiles, feeding it his token and passing through to wait for the subway heading north. "I myself just tend to be a little more flight than fight by nature."

Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery) Empty Re: Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery)

Post by Lumine Tue Sep 18, 2012 12:19 am

The stalker explanation quickly garnered a chuckle from Lumine, who had suspected something was up that day. Hoss' intel had been right on the money though. Unlike those people who used alcohol to loosen people's lips, Lumi was loosened by the notion of food. Spicy food nonetheless. It wasn't often she ate Thai, but when she did, she never stopped talking. Was it a huge deal? No, not particularly. A fair people knew her real name. It wasn't hard to derive anything about her to be fair. Hoss probably did some extra work was all.

"Oh goodie, more free stuff. I can get behind this."

It was nice until some creep directly tried to confront her. At that point, he...or she might find themselves with part of their bodies pounded into a concave shape. Lumine was not often tolerant of those people that purposely went after her. Blue had been slightly different. That was an accident, and there was absolutely no context for why she was thinking of her at that point. Besides that, there was the point on why Solstice was around in the city.

"They still do. Although what is right and wrong is up to the people. There are six million people in this city. Maybe more. It's inevitable that some sort of secondary power would rise. Social economics so to speak."

It wasn't long before they hit the tunnel and descended into it's dark depths. As expected for the southern district, the place was practically deserted at night. Most people knew to stay well away from anywhere the gangs would be operating, and the subway after 7:30pm or so certainly qualified under those criteria. One could hear the trains quite clearly walking through the hallways; they echoed in and up the escalators, and if you listened closely enough, could hear the voices announcing the arrivals and departures from an exceptional distance. Lumine put in her token, and walked through.

"But we don't have a second pack...oh. Right."

Either he had been more prepared than she had been, or he had a really useful ability. She had known Hoss was a harbinger, but had completely forgotten to ask his ability. That had been lazy.

"Wait, so what do you do exactly? Since I forgot to ask the first time I met you? Your answer determines my flight or fight response in case something happens."

"Oh goodie, more free stuff. I can get behind this." Well at least she had a good attitude about the whole thing. It certainly put Hoss at ease around her. He didn't want to go pissing someone off if they had quite a destructive power now did he? If she could take care of herself as well then he didn't have any guilt about letting some creep onto her. Most likely the jerk would have what was coming to him if he did something out of bounds toward her. "They still do. Although what is right and wrong is up to the people. There are six million people in this city. Maybe more. It's inevitable that some sort of secondary power would rise. Social economics so to speak."

"Guess that's true. The large population in a small city with no real outlet. If you ask me it's kind of amazing the place hasn't blown itself to pieces. Then again maybe it is just at an incredibly dull pace." It seemed that they would be boarding the train alone, as the time was not one where most people rode the subway. "Not to mention the complete lack of representation on the minority that is us. Honestly we're not doing ourselves any favors by joining into gangs but I'd rather take control of my life than trust some group of big wigs to create a peaceful situation for our kind."

It wasn't often that Harvey lumped himself in as a part of a group like Harbingers but it really was true. They were a vast majority, a few thousand among several million and on top of that they were treated like freaks. The negative treatment was to be expected all things considered but so easily does man forget how much power truly lies with the masses. The Harbingers were so outnumbered that they had no reason to fear them and even if they didn't, it wasn't like Harbingers were going to go around using their powers to enslave people.

"But we don't have a second pack…. oh. right. Wait, so what do you do exactly? Since I forgot to ask the first time I met you? Your answer determines my flight or fight response in case something happens."

"Fair enough, but you gotta tell me yours. And if you have any nasty side effects like hurting yourself after using them. I'll explain mine but once and only once," He made his way to their subway which had been arriving from down the tunnel. "I grab some random material, I grab something I want more of. I turn the material into the other something. I hold onto this box, I grab the cushion of the bus seat, I can make another box. Package details, tape, everything flush gets included. Only catch is, it won't have anything inside of it. Contents aren't perfectly flush with each other." He gave it a slight shake to give the sound of the insides moving along the cardboard to demonstrate.

"Then you just have to put up with some whistling. And that's it, I think you're the only person who knows the details of my little trick so try to keep them to ourselves alright? So fess up, what's yours?"

The subway train arrived, the doors open, and Hoss stepped on, completely aware that there were three people heading north and they all looked to be minding their own business with newspapers.

Boy if that ain't creepy.

Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery) Empty Re: Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery)

Post by Lumine Wed Sep 19, 2012 1:53 am

"The city is probably less in control than you think, although that in itself is a good thing. The extra chaos isn't conducive to organization. It's kind of like a ton of small earthquakes in comparison to a large 7.2 or something of the sort. One of those sends things toppling when the pressure isn't released. The gangs have been so far, that release. They're ironically good for the city. It's that chaos that denies those bigwigs as you say any real form of organization. Depending on your world view, that could be good or bad."

Lumine, being a harbinger, found it as good. So far, the government feared them, although they had very little reason to. Unfortunately, the destructive nature of a few harbingers, as well as their criminal records was more than enough justification to throw every last one of them behind bars if they stepped even an inch out of line. Two inches, and they'd be dead in a heartbeat. Lumine had been good enough to keep herself in check and still enjoy life. It was however quite possible that chapter of her life was ending.

Having Hoss' name, it was an easy enough time looking through the index for his ability...if it was listed. Depending on the circumstances, he might be unregistered, and thus off the radar. If he was ever caught doing anything with said power, it would not bode well for him later. He had mentioned he had a thing for crime, or at least his mind did. Matter duplication. Yeah, that explained quite a few things. Useful, but not directly dangerous. Usually.

"That's convenient, certainly explains why you had no problem treating me to lunch."

He could just duplicate money and be done with it. Definitely awesome, and much more subtle. The restitution wasn't horrible either. Hoss had gotten particularly lucky.

"Fair's fair I guess. I'm kinda like an amplifier. Energy magnification, usually kinetic. Force, speed, heat, whatever. My record is about 1,200 miles per hour on a tennis serve. I could probably caber toss you up several stories of a building. I carry a hammer. You can do the math. As for a restitution...well."

Lumine lifted a pouch on her hip and showed Hoss one of the vials she kept around.

"This is powder from a brick wall my hammerhead got slammed into. I have to keep it around. Not sure why. Just do. If I don't destroy anything, I don't have a restitution. Kinda nice."

There were three others on the train with newspapers. That was a little strange. Lumi tapped Hoss and nodded to the door.

"We should move up. Something feels weird."

Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery) Empty Re: Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery)

Post by Hoss Thu Sep 20, 2012 4:09 am

So that's what they were, small earthquakes. Distractions to an otherwise possible regime of control and oppression. Hoss liked the metaphor, because he thought of it as a way to measure his impact in actual numbers. He was probably some small tremor, nothing more than aftershock of something a little more grand than himself. Maybe some day he'd make some waves throughout the structures and foundations but for now he was just small time. He was someone dropping a bowling ball.

Of course over time buildings and foundations couldn't handle any sort of quakes, and a large one would catch attention and probably be counterproductive to any sort of gang activity because it would alert masses to the issue. For now they were structure, they were sensible, and they kept it that way. It explained why everything took place at night, why civilians weren't killed, and why they didn't do anything as high profile as kidnapping. Too big of quakes, might get the quake inspectors attention. Might suggest to lawmakers that something new is needed.

As for Hoss' current waves, he hadn't been caught doing anything. His powers were a mystery to the index but he was registered at the very least. They knew his eye color and they had inconclusive data regarding his abilities. There had been reports of money disappearing without a trace but that was the furthest it had ever gone for being public. Hoss prided himself on keeping the details to a few privileged few and Lumine was one of the few who had become privy to that information. He would make a point to not give away his restitution anymore though, but he was really curious about hers.

As for a restitution...well. This is powder from a brick wall my hammerhead got slammed into. I have to keep it around. Not sure why. Just do. If I don't destroy anything, I don't have a restitution. Kinda nice." Hoss had a similar work around. His restitution didn't hit until he was done using his ability. He could stave it for a minute or so and just continuously make things to help keep him from using it. This work around seemed kind of sketchy at best though.

"Jesus girl, that's some nasty stuff. You could really fuck someone up with that… remind me never to piss you off and to never EVER play tennis with you."

Once Lumine brought her attention to the other three on the train Hoss grinned. "Oh, these guys don't feel weird at all to me." Hoss walked over and sat right next to one. "Hey pal, you gonna read the sports section?" His hand dipped into his bag from the other side before he crossed his arms. The guy gave him a dirty look as the other two put down there papers. Hoss saw the weapon in the guy's lap and as soon as Hoss' eyes went down to it, the guy's lit up in anger. Before the one next to Hoss could yell out more than "THE PACKA-" his knife buried itself into the guy's side between his ribs with ease. This hadn't been just anyone, oh no. This was some ganger going after them.

The other two got up grabbing the axe's they had as the subway took off, throwing the two off balance enough that they reached for handrails. "Sick em girlie!"

Hoss was a bit preoccupied with the screaming guy he was stabbing. It seemed one stab to the gut, as Hoss suspected, wouldn't really take someone out of the picture. It'd just make them loud and annoyingly whiney. Hoss had to be a little more violent as he thrust into the torso sporadically. He was still getting used to killing people.

"Thankfully, I've never had to use it in a match, nor is it legal to do so, the line judges call me on it at least once a game, although it's pretty obvious when I use my ability."

Lumine had a powerful serve without her ability. So much so that many people at the university refused to play against her; aces were common, and in those games that she did not serve, her return was equally deadly. However, when asked to play for the school, Lumine politely declined every time, knowing full well that it was one, unfair, and two, not in the best interest for her to split between too many projects so to speak. She had her own little harbinger project ramping up, and then there was Solstice. The Solstice that while she was still a grunt in, she cared about in some strange manner. It was hard to get away from that.

On another note, when Hoss went to sit with the boys, Lumine just rolled her eyes and turned around. It was supposed to be a quiet trip. But a bit after the train got rolling, things started to get intense.

"Hey pal, you gonna read the sports section?"

Spoiler:

"THE PACKA-"

The yelling, followed by more yelling was never a good sign. The sharpness of the mans voice said that Hoss had stabbed him, and when the other two suddenly had axes in hand, Lumine drew her own hammer. Great. Not two minutes into a nice ride, and everything had gone to hell. So much for using the subway.

"Sick em girlie!"

Spoiler:

Hoss was more than busy with the one he was dealing with, but Lumi had more than enough strength to take down the two. They didn't look like harbingers, but even if they were, Lumine was in her own environment. Tight, close-quarters. And nowhere to run. If they wanted to try something, well...let them. As one raised his axe to attack Hoss, Lumine simply strode up with her hammer, extended the handle, and whipped it into his sternum, sitting him back down gasping for air. This drew the aggro of the second attacker, who was stopped by flicking the handle into his arm, whipping the axe out of his hand, and out the window not a foot from Hoss' head.

"Sit down. And stay there. Are you done over there yet? I told you I wanted a different car, but nope."

Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery) Empty Re: Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery)

It seemed that they were ahead for a moment, though Hoss was alerted by the flying axe that nearly hit him. He remembered the cut across his face he had received in his first mission for Solstice, his test. It had since been healed by Trevor but it was still not a feeling he relished. A problem that was soon resolved as Lumine was right in front of him having disarmed him and managed to told him to sit and stay. "Are you done over there yet? I told you I wanted a different car, but nope."

"They woulda followed us anyway," Hoss said as he pulled the knife out and cleaned it against the newspaper the guy was carrying. He picked the parts not covered in blood and stuffed it into his messenger bag as he made his way over to where the first victim of Lumine's sat with what appeared to be some sort of chest pain. Maybe it was the air he couldn't quite grasp or the broken bone but Hoss found it incredibly appropriate timing to press his heel into the guy's slightly caved in sternum. He applied enough pressure that the guy let out an airless gasp.

"That has GOT to hurt, pal. You should get that looked at. Now then, are there any more of you guys? Because killing you guys takes an awful lot of stabbing and my arms gonna get sore eventually." He lifted the blade and leaned in against the guy's chest as his eyes shot open as wide as they could go. Hoss continued to stare into them as he heard the car doors open on the opposite side of where he was, closer to Lumine.

Three more guys poured in, a baseball bat, a pair of brass knuckles, and a chain. Really? A chain?

Spoiler:

The three guys stumbled in, seemingly having some trouble moving in unison on a moving train amidst handrails and seats that were getting in the way. Hoss could throw his knife, but it was his only one currently. So he reached into his bag with his free hand, gripping the newspaper he had added to his collection of materials, and he made copies while Lumine dealt with the initial attack.

Those poor poor bastards…

Despite Lumine's penchant for destruction, she was not one for killing needlessly. However, in the case of Lancaster, simple arithmetic applied. Lumine could kill him and save many lives, or spare a life at the probable expense of many others. Sure, these gangers had weapons, but Hoss had (sorta) deliberately provoked them to attack. And it was true, the group probably would have followed them.

"Sure, but at least it would have been less messy."

If they did follow, Lumine could have held the doorway herself until they arrived at the station, provided they got all the way to the front car. Unfortunate, they had parked themselves about in the middle of the train. They would be going nowhere. After they had the three under control, the thought arose once more to move. She was still uncomfortable with Hoss' odd affinity for killing his aggressors outright, but it was understandable. Lumine was about to sit down herself until three more gangers busted through her end of the train. She let a long sigh out, and finally made the decision to disconnect the hammerhead from its handle. That was as easy as pulling a pin.

"That chain isn't going to help you."

As he started to swing it, Lumine slammed the sucker with the brass knuckles in the gut, turned him around, and took him as a shield. At the very least, the remaining two would hesitate for the moment that Lumine threw him right back into the group, knocking them to the ground. This whole situation was starting to get ridiculous. They would have to move eventually.

"Can I suggest we take our leave? I'm good, but if there's more of them, it's unlikely the both of us are going to make it out of here unscathed."

One tried to get up. He was slapped quickly back down.

"Unless you've got a date with one, come on, while they're down."

"Sure, but at least it would have been less messy."

Hoss looked to his side as well as the sleeve of his jacket which was now splattered lightly with blood. It seemed that truer words hadn't been spoken in awhile, his methods were a bit messy. "I guess the lady is right. Sorry about that, pal." He reached down and touched the guy's jacket which appeared to be quite dry. Hoss shook his head after considering turning his coat into the guy's. His was like a second skin and doing that would be more or less kissing his coat goodbye so he simply turned and took note of Lumine taking the three down.

"Can I suggest we take our leave? I'm good, but if there's more of them, it's unlikely the both of us are going to make it out of here unscathed. Unless you've got a date with one, come on, while they're down." Okay, so to be fair he had pretty much been using her to try and distract them away from him for safety reasons. He stuck to interrogating the already injured one while hesitating to engage and that tactic was leaning on her quite a bit. Running was something he was definitely good with. He turned to the door opposite of where the three entered and forced it open to the next cab, he turned and waved Lumine on toward him.

"Alright, alright. This way!" He ran into the next car which seemed to be empty upon first look and grabbed a bit of cushion. Making a box would be no instant thing so he hoped Lumine could get here and hopefully close the door to buy him ten or twenty more seconds as he created the empty box.

Alright, fake box. Leave it or take it in pairs? Leaving it will distract them for about half a second and give away which box it is and that I can make boxes. No, I'll carry both until we have a chance to split the group up a little bit.

The good thing was that he could stave off the whistling for now, the package tucked under his armpit, his finger now pressed against it as the transference continued. "No date with any of them tonight. Besides, a girl like you, how could a guy possibly stray?" He would shoot her a wink. "How we looking, Aelio?"

At the very least, Lumine's methods tended to keep her opponent's blood inside their own bodies. Not that it was any consolation, but at the very least, it was far less messy than stabbing someone. Even worse was the fact that Hoss had stabbed his ganger multiple times AND winged a knife at another. Those were not wounds that simply closed up from trauma. They made a mess, and a big one at that. Consider it a stylistic difference. If it was practical, Lumine would be using a bag of oranges over a hammer. She did however, finally manage to catch Hoss' attention and get him to move into the next car. Picking up her hammerhead and reconnecting it to the handle, she ran with him.

With the three gang members previously occupying the car now in the one behind them, the pair found themselves in an empty box. The people going after the box on the other hand were not to give up so easily. At least two of them had quickly recovered and were now devising ways to break down the door that Lumine was now holding shut. She was strong, but they'd break through soonish if Hoss didn't hurry it up.

"Charming. We'll see about that later. They'll get through here in a minute or two unless we do something drastic. Unless you've got something cooked up yourself."

The bit of glass next to Lumine's head broke from another axe coming through. Now thoroughly pissed off however, Lumi drove her hammer like a spear through the door and into the first man's chest, knocking them all back for a moment. It was a quick respite, but no doubt they would be all over the car in a few moments.

"Well? What's in your box of tricks? Or do I have to pull something out of my own hat?"

"Charming. We'll see about that later. They'll get through here in a minute or two unless we do something drastic. Unless you've got something cooked up yourself." It was a hopeful thought that Hoss had something for these guys. Everything he could do in the immediate vicinity would take time. In truth he could alter the bottom of the train but it was so much harder without some water to put his hand on. No, this was something for brute force simply put. Something that was reinforced when Lumine thrusted her hammer head into a guy's chest, knocking all of them back after a failed axe throw. He grabbed a glass shard but it made no difference, he wasn't in a situation to do much of anything.

"This isn't good…"

"Well? What's in your box of tricks? Or do I have to pull something out of my own hat?"

"Start reaching for rabbits, this bag of tricks is too slow acting without some water for anything really feasible." He was considering ditching Lumine for the next car already. Truth be told fighting seemed the most likely scenario for survival though. They were clearly the types to throw their axes with some skill even if it wasn't accurate enough to have hit them yet. If he gave them a back and a kill box to aim into he wouldn't have any option but take take an axe to the back or turn around and face them up front. "Can't you just bust their fucking faces in with that thing or something?"

He noticed a lot of what she had been doing were body hits. Granted, a body hit was a smart choice in terms of aim and it meant less blood and mess but one good swift hit to the bridge of the nose with that thing and they'd be out cold. Times like this it was them or you and Hoss would much rather it be them. He hadn't relished in killing but he was starting to understand that this was a lot of kill or be killed scenarios packing up on top of each other. "That or of course there is this idea-"

Hoss tossed the fake package through the busted window. "FUCKIN' TAKE IT ALREADY! LEAVE US THE FUCK ALONE!" He ducked back down behind the seat he was in front of, safely thinking the one thing he hadn't yet. Maybe, just maybe, they didn't know what was in the package. Maybe, just maybe, they were as clueless as Hoss and Lumine and all they knew was what the packaging looked like. He crossed his fingers that they would take the win and leave, but there was the chance they'd open it.

If nothing else it's a momentary distraction.

Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery) Empty Re: Special Delivery or The Newspaper Boy Massacre of Team Lumos (Hoss/Lumi) (Solstice Delivery)

Post by Lumine Sun Sep 23, 2012 5:09 am

While Hoss was looking for rabbits around him, Lumine had already found several. The entire train was in motion, making stopping it a surprisingly easy affair. Unfortunately, stopping the vehicle would probably mean wrecking it in the process. After a few other pieces of weaponry and assorted debris came flying at them however, the situation was quite clear. Either they stopped them, or be over run. The second would probably involve severe injuries and/or death, a state that Lumine would have rather stayed away from.

"I could, but I'd probably get chopped down in the process."

It wasn't long before Hoss took a different route and tossed what was a fake package through the window that Lumine had been trying desperately to protect. And for a few seconds, maybe 10-15, it worked. Unfortunately, that's about all the time they had before their attack was renewed with much more fury and vigor. Either they had figured out it was a fake, or they just wanted to kill Hoss and Lumi for the hell of it. Either way, there wasn't much way out at this point.

"So much for that."

Lumine started running for the front, grabbing Hoss and pulling him along. Things were about to get a little bit rough. Tossing him through one more car, she slammed the door, letting the group after them into the car behind them.

"Hang on."

There was a loud whining sound just before a small explosion in the car behind them lifted their own vessel into the air a couple feet, and had it crash right back down. The three were still back there, but the concussive effect and a bit of shrapnel had stopped them in their tracks. It had also however forcefully stopped the rest of the train on it's tracks. Quite literally. Lights out, the smell of something burning and the car half tipped on its side against the wall lent to the story that they had stopped. That and Lumine's sore ribs.

"That worked nicely. Ow. You alright back there?"

Did I really think that would work? Like really? Maybe for a second there I really did. Oh well.

The break was short lived as Hoss dropped the shard of glass. It would be no use, already he was feeling like he had to whistle, a feeling he wanted to stave off as long as he could as he went back to making throwing knives in his bag. It was the simplest way to stave off the restitution was to continue using his ability to delay it. Only…

"So much for that." Without much warning whatsoever Hoss felt himself get pulled along in a rush as he struggled to keep himself standing, pushing against the ground with his feet as fast as he could. As they went along he could hear the group behind them breaking into the current car just before getting thrown into the next car. He managed to stay upright by gripping onto one of the handrails, gripping it for dear life at the next suggestion Lumine had. "Hang on."

He heard something wine, and then explode as he felt himself raise up and drop. He gripped the pull and braced for impact which gave him the feeling of having shin splints. He mentally cursed himself for not relaxing his legs a little more when the car had raised up but it was more instinctive than anything else. "Fucking hell that hurt!" He yelled as he looked around. It seemed that they were stopped here for good in the dark.

"That worked nicely. Ow. You alright back there?"

"Yeah but I won't be able to talk long," He said as he moved up toward the window which was now at a higher elevation. He pressed a hand to the window and grabbed onto some spare newspaper. "My shin's hurt because I tensed up, like falling from too high. Let's go out this way."

His focus began to turn the window itself into newspaper, the same one layer by layer as he managed to make a hole big enough for either of them to get through easily enough. Once it was finished he pushed the newspaper out through the other side and crawled out and onto the train top. It was tilted but while crouching and gripping himself he could manage to continue moving outside of the train. It wouldn't be moving but they could walk to the next stop incident free if they avoided touching the rails.

Guess we gotta find a bus or something now.

Hoss began whistling the globetrotters theme song, no longer wishing to make copies of anything since there didn't seem to be a point. He had knives if those guys resurfaced.

The train was an absolute wreck. The ends were comparitively okay, but the cars the pair had gone through looked like they had been compressed like an accordion. Needless to say, the line was not moving for a significant amount of time, and unless they ditched now, no doubt they would be found responsible. Unfortunately, there was the small issue of Lumine's restitution. Hoss seemed fine, but they'd have to delay a minute as Lumine looked for suitable material to fill up a vial.

"Hold on, there's something I have to do."

They both crawled out through the window and found themselves mostly in the dark, some fires lighting the way. Lumine's phone however, with an LED flashlight, was able to significantly defer that darkness problem. In about a minute, she found a small pile of powder that had probably once been part of the train's motor. That was suitable enough, and as soon as she set it in her vial, the overwhelming urge subsided, and the pair started to walk. They didn't bother checking on the gangers that decided to make an attempt on the package.

"There should be a station ahead. We can stop there and figure out where we are. I don't have signal down here."

It was gonna be a bit of a walk. Not too long, but the four hours was now a liability more than an asset. They hadn't been on the train long, and it was now unlikely they would make their four hour time limit, especially injured. It wasn't much of a slowdown, but over time, it might have just cost them the mission. Those assholes.

"Hold on, there's something I have to do." Hoss remembered that he wasn't the only one around here with a restitution. He wondered if she had to gather anything from the wreckage in particular or if it could be any wreckage so long as she was the one who caused it. He was glad he had a restitution that guaranteed he could keep moving despite using his abilities. In truth due to their restitutions they'd be horrible for any sort of stealth missions. Hoss had to whistle, her powers were loud and destructive, and she had to gather up bits of the stuff she destroyed.

He watched the light source as she got something from under the train as he kept whistling on. "There should be a station ahead. We can stop there and figure out where we are. I don't have a signal down here." No one did, it was an issue. You figure one city could manage getting cell access to it's only subway system but there just was no way around that problem of underground tunnels and reception. He remembered a few different places he would go like hospitals and then his phone reception would drop to practically nothing at all. He held onto the package under his arm though and just kept moving along, leading the way to the front of the train and then further on toward the next station.

"You have a funny taste for song, you know that?"

Hoss gave a half shrug with his free arm as he whistled it out, his eyes watching as they went along, noticing that every so often they'd be blessed with a dim light in the tunnel. Most likely some sort of service light. He could hear the distant sound of service vehicles in the distance behind them, the sound echoing down the tunnel toward him. He figured it was just some sort of rescue crew and nothing else given that there was no way to tell that Lumine had done anything. Still, he felt a little hurried as he picked up his pace only slightly.

Once he was able to, he stopped whistling and spoke up, "No choice in the song sadly. I just try to tone it out as it goes though, otherwise it gets on my nerves." He reached into his bags and tossed the knives he had created onto the ground. "These are more or less useless now, or they will be in a few minutes."

Ahead he could see what looked like a station, and as light filled the area he realized he was right. Thankfully it was pretty empty as he walked up to the wall and turned toward Lumine. He interlaced his fingers and bent down to offer her a boost, "You go up first and then drag my ass up once you get there. It looks like we're at the most northern part of southern district. Lucked out, any further and forward would have been no stops until we were into Northern District."

"I'm sure Curly and the rest of them would be happy to hear it."

Sweet Georgia Brown. The tune was quite recognizable, but nobody really knew the name of the Globetrotter's theme. Looking back again, Lumine was quite sure the lot of them were harbingers, but thus far, there was no proof of that. And honestly? It was better that way. Maybe their skill was all natural, and they were simply THAT good at basketball. If that was the case, Lumine had a long way to go before she could claim mastery at any of her own skills. Even her harbinger ability.

By the time they had walked well away from the crash, echoes of the cities loud service vehicles could be heard a significant distance behind them, although how far behind was debatable. Either way, the pair both sped their pace a small bit, not wanting to be found before getting up into the next station. With any luck, the gangers that were left behind would be found responsible for the crash, but either way, it was unlikely to be traced back to the Solstice pair. From the investigators perspective, it would simply look like a nasty engine malfunction. At least, that was the hope.

"It's a good song, but yeah, I can understand that."

They eventually came upon what appeared to be the last stop in the southern district before heading out for the north. Being extremely late at night, the place was practically empty. The couple people that saw Lumine climb up didn't care at all, as they were probably too smashed to do anything about it. Turning around after the all clear, Lumine dragged Hoss up to the platform, and went to grab a map. They were still a long way away, and with a significant amount of wasted time.

"Well this sucks. Bus service this late is shoddy. Maybe there's a zip car around or something, although I probably shouldn't count on that in the south. Got any other bright ideas? The bus is cutting it extremely close."

Lumine shook her head a bit and contemplated other ideas. Stealing a car? Hell no, that was unacceptable.

"I'd suggest my sister, but I don't think she'll be fond of hearing about gang stuff."

"I'm sure Curly and the rest of them would be happy to hear it."

"You know what? Fucking points for originality," He told Lumi as he usually got the reference he was used to using himself, globetrotters theme song. The thing was that when he started whistling the song over and over he had to wonder if there was a reason it was this song in particular and truth be told his theory to date was that it was the first song he had actually heard and comprehended, his earliest memory of music. Maybe that theory was a bit off because he had no proof but each time he thought about it that was the only explanation he could manage to come up with.

"It's a good song, but yeah I can understand that."

"It's a song with good whistling. A good whistling song it may be but good whistling a good song does not make." He was of the impression that it was a god awful song in some instances. Reason number one being that he had heard it one too many times so it was overplayed by him. Reason number two was that it was whistled and whistling was harsh on the ears when used as a live instrument right there in your face. No literally, in his face.

"Well this sucks. Bus service this late is shoddy. Maybe there's a zip car around or something, although I probably shouldn't count on that in the south. Got any other bright ideas? The bus is cutting it extremely close. I'd suggest my sister, but I don't think she'll be fond of hearing about gang stuff."

Hoss may have been low key but he was not above stealing a car. Hoss grinned as he made his way out of the station. He made his way to the stairs and motioned for her to come along. Once he was out into the street he pulled out a fifty credit bill and made his way to a group of people coming out of a nearby bar. Hoss turned to Lumine and said, "Watch and learn."

He approached the group who gave a disapproving look as he first made his way up to them. Thankfully the dark of the night and the dark of his clothes kept the blood from being even remotely visible. "Hey, you guys seem to be the kind to enjoy a good magic trick. Here, let me show you one. Can I press my finger to your car keys?" They looked confused.

"Fuck off." One of them said as he pushed Hoss away and they walked away. Hoss turned and walked up to Lumine.

"Okay, so uh. That didn't go as planned. No ideas, none. I mean, I was going to make a copy of their keys and try to con them to take the copy and then steal their car but you know what, fuck it." He repositioned the package since it had shifted from the push and placed the fifty credit bill he was going to change into a key back into his pocket. "Let's just take the damned bus."

"I'm glad you enjoyed it, although I'm sorry you have to whistle every time you decide to duplicate something. At least it keeps you honest to an extent."

Lumine now knew the tell-tale sign of Hoss using his ability to take advantage of the system. Not that she cared too much, but at the very least, she had some reservations about using harbinger abilities in everyday life. It was kind of like cheating. The less you did it, the more everyone tended to trust you. Having no one know Hoss' particular quirks however made him rather dangerous, and sneaky at that.

"Watch and learn."

Lumine raised an eyebrow and watched Hoss walk off to a group of shady looking characters. Expecting another fight, she tightened her grip on her weapon, but to no avail. Hoss returned quickly, and quite defeated after being told to fuck off. Lumine stifled a laugh. That was the second time Hoss had failed in his endeavors, but at least this time it wouldn't end up injuring them, or crashing a train. To be fair however, the gangers had kind of forced Lumine to crash the train to stop them as well. It wasn't really a fair fight.

"You sure showed them. Are you this charismatic to all the people you meet? Or was I special somehow? Let's grab the bus. It's gonna be a long ride."

Lumine started her walk to the underground bus terminal. A nice change from the cold outside, and certainly a welcome relief from the dark tunnels and dim lighting of the station proper. The bus was there in twenty minutes. The two paid, and got aboard. So far, they were looking okay on time, although that could change pretty quickly.

"I'm glad you enjoyed it, although I'm sorry you have to whistle every time you decide to duplicate something. At least it keeps you honest to an extent."

"Yeah me too, but it's sort of just become some part of me. I mean, if I wanted to I could cover up that it's my restitution by whistling all the god damned time but I don't really care too much. As far as restitutions go it's not horrible," He admitted. He had heard some nasty cases and had seen some on the database. I mean, it was one thing to whistle after your ability and another to have something painful happen. Sure he hated the song and he'd get headachy from time to time but at least his head didn't split open with pain or anything bizarre. It was tame, controllable.

Once he had failed and made his way back to her though he had to roll his eyes at her reaction. "You sure showed them. Are you this charismatic to all the people you meet? Or was I special somehow? Let's grab the bus. It's gonna be a long ride." She was special but he simply scoffed at the statement. She was special because he was genuinely interested in the college thing which was able to drive it. Besides, approaching a girl and asking her to a lunch date was one thing. Approaching a group and asking to see their car keys was another and he wasn't going to spend twenty minutes building up some magic trick if he was just planning on running off and getting to their car with their real keys first.

Hoss followed there, following suit and mostly keeping quiet as they waited for the bus. He kept the package safe at least, something that would probably be a moot point after everything else. They had eaten up almost an hour of their four hours if not more. He didn't bother to check the time because either they were going to get there on time or they wouldn't. He didn't see a point in delaying it further by stressing himself out while paying attention to what time they had to be there by.

Once they were on the bus and seated he set the package down on his lap and asked her seriously, "Alright, so mundane object or not. What do you think? Honestly, if you had to put fifty credits down on this thing what would you guess what it was? Think of it like an office pool or something. We can bet on it, get there, see who is closest according to who we deliver too. If that doesn't happen we both go home with money intact. If one of us is right, we can either owe the other food or just a favor or something."
