Drop and Run[Keith, Ceara] Empty Drop and Run[Keith, Ceara]

Post by Keith Mon Jul 29, 2013 12:24 pm

Keith flicked the wheel of his lighter, piercing the darkness with the quivering glow of a tiny flame. He lifted it to the light the cigarette pinched between his lips. The tip became alight with fading embers that withered to ash with every breath he inhaled. He slid the lighter back into his pocket, plucking the cigarette from his mouth to exhale a cloud of smoke. He flipped the butt with his thumb, sprinkling ash on the asphalt before it was replaced in the corner of his mouth.

Scanning the area with frosty eyes, Keith checked the time on his cellphone. He hadn't been waiting long, but he was eager to be freed of the weight of the bag thrown over his shoulder. He needed to feel the roughness of bills betwixt his fingertips. Paying rent had drained his wallet, and he was left again to survive on whatever expired junk was stocked in his cabinets. Of it all, the most edible item he had was a half empty box of stale crackers. They tasted less salty and more like crunchy pieces of cardboard. They failed to sate his hunger, but they kept him from starving to death. He cursed the gang of smugglers that had taken all of his jobs; it was becoming harder and harder to find work. He still had a paltry list of loyal clients, but, unfortunately, he had to lower his prices a little to keep them.

Sighing, Keith fell back against the wall behind him. He wasn't far from his shop; typically, he would make exchanges in some sleazy dive, but he was less than interested in saving face over a few drinks and more keen on getting his money and going home.

It was a lot easier to walk around with a large sum of cash in her bag than she expected. After about two minutes of paranoia, Ceara quickly learned that being a small, innocent and unassuming looking girl with a slightly fuller than normal backpack worked to her advantage, as much as she hated that it did.

The young woman sighed and readjusted the straps of the bag so they would stop digging incessantly into her shoulders before crossing the street. She didn't enjoy doing exchanges. So many things could go wrong, especially since both parties needed to cooperate with the other for it to work, and she didn't like some of that control taken away from her. But she could also understand why Vector sent her instead of any other member; dealing with people was what she did best, no matter how annoying she found them to be.

Ceara scrunched up her nose when the whiff of cigarette smoke hit her as soon as she turned into the alley. Finding the source of the smell, she regarded him before stepping closer. Scarred eye, reddish hair, (fucking) tall - he matched the description of the smuggler. She grimaced when the odor got stronger as she came closer, but covered up the expression as quickly as it came. "Sorry, were you waiting long?"

Penetrating the darkness, Keith saw a meek woman walking toward him. He knew instantly she was who he had been waiting for. The striking lightness of her hair was unmistakable. If he wasn't one-hundred percent certain before that she was his client, he was when she approached him. He didn't miss her grimace, though it was quickly fading. Keith could only guess it was on account of the smoke; most people didn't particularly like the scent of a burning cigarette unless they smoked themselves.

"Sorry, were you waiting long?"

"Not at all," he responded politely, though his voice was void of any tone of friendliness. He wasn't there to make a new friend. Letting the heavy duffel bag slide from his shoulder, Keith jerked the zipper open, tilting the bag in her direction to show that everything she'd ordered was there. He knew, of course, that she wouldn't be able to discern if anything was missing in that brief flash of a second that he held it toward her. It was simply a formality to boost his clients' trust in him. If she asked to inspect the contents more closely, he would allow her, but Keith was really hoping she would spare him so that he could leave as soon as possible.

Keith closed the zipper, dangling the bag by its strap from his hand, which he extended toward her.

"I trust you got the full price we agreed on," he said with the slightest hint of warning, but Keith didn't expect the woman to rip him off. She seemed trustworthy enough, and he would hunt her down if she did.

Instead of glancing at into the duffel bag, she kept her eyes on his face, wary of any sort of deception. It wasn't needed, though - the man was a professional and didn't show anything out of the ordinary, which meant they were all there or he was just really fantastic at masking emotions. Her power wasn't perfect by any means, after all.

"I trust you got the full price we agreed on."

Ignoring the slight twinge of pain behind her eyes, she smirked and let the bag slide off her shoulders, copying his position with her bag. "Of course. You're welcome to check if you like, but I think the both of us want to get this done as soon as possible." Ceara smiled a little more genuinely, reaching out for the weapons when he moved towards the money.

She grunted softly when the bag was in her hand, not expecting it to be so heavy, but lifted it onto her shoulder without a word. She must've looked ridiculous, with a bag that seemed to be about as big as her and certainly felt like it was. Snorting a little to herself in amusement, she waited for him to confirm that everything was in order so she could get her ass back to HQ.

"Of course. You're welcome to check if you like, but I think the both of us want to get this done as soon as possible."

Keith gave one jerky nod in agreement, his fingers wrapping around the strap of the bag. The weight was comforting, and he was relieved to feel himself relax, the tension leaving him. His stomach gave a weak whine at the thought of the food he could buy with that money. Was it a testament to his poverty that, when presented with a small fortune, the first thing he thought of purchasing was a pizza or takeout from some other fastfood restaurant?

However, those thoughts were erased the moment the piercing screech of sirens hit his ears and bright headlights bounced on the crest of the hill. Keith spat rapid expletives beneath his breath. Who had called the police? And how in the fuck had they known where he was meeting his client? The thought of whom could have squealed on him enraged the smuggler, but the rat's identity wasn't what mattered at that moment. It was the fact that a squadron of police cruisers were cresting the hill, about to illuminate him and his shady business practices.

Without a thought to the woman he had done business with, Keith bolted into the lightly wooded area nearby. She could follow if she wanted, or she could take her own path. She was old enough to look out for herself. If she wasn't, she shouldn't have been paying such a heavy sum for illegal, unregistered and stolen artillery.

Fuck.

Ceara's head snapped to the source of the siren, muttering equally colorful and creative words as the man beside her. She frowned for a split second before she sprinted off in the opposite direction. Her companion evidently had the idea before she did, already a few steps ahead of her. The bag of weapons thumped against her leg as she ran, hindering her movement. Grunting in frustration, she hiked the strap back up her shoulder and pushed a little harder.

She shot a look over her shoulder before snapping her attention back forward again, just in time to duck under a low lying branch. The trees wouldn't provide enough cover to lose them, nor could she climb one with the guns adding extra weight. "Hey!", she hissed out, jerking her head to the right before turning in that direction, heading towards where she knew the edge of the park was. He could stay in the small park if he wanted, but it was much easier to hide from and lose pursuers with cars in a more urban setting. At least that's what she thought. The girl looked around for the other guy, wondering where he went.

Keith cast a glance over his shoulder as his footsteps faltered, finding the girl a silhouette against the night. The area wasn't well-lit and his vision wasn't the best at night as it was, but he could tell from her body language alone that she was struggling. Keith almost kept going, but he reminded himself that that wasn't the wisest decision on his part. Cursing, the man turned on his heel and jogged back up the bank to her. Snatching the bag from her shoulder, he hiked it onto his own.

"C'mon," he grunted, clapping the girl on the back to get her going. He kept running in the direction of the city. They couldn't completely disappear with that incriminating bag in tow, but, at least, a crowd would help hide them until they could hole up somewhere safe.

She jerked in surprise when the man's large frame suddenly appeared right beside hers. There was little she could do to protest when he took the load off her shoulder, even if she wanted to do anything about it. They knew very little about each other, but at this moment their mutual understanding that they needed to get the fuck out of there right now made them comrades. Of sorts, if you squinted a little. Either way, he didn't seem to mind the load. "Thank you," she managed out through her labored breathing. Better for her, she was about to fall over because of the sheer size of the damn thing.

Ceara nearly did fall over when his hand shoved her forward with a few words to urge her forward. He was slower than her, but that was to be expected, given his size and the weight of what he was carrying. Still, now that he had the bag, he wasn't going to leave her sight. He had a good reputation, but you could never know.

Ceara immediately slowed down once they reached the buildings, immediately ducking into an alley and jogging to the other end. Her breath came in short bursts and her chest shouldn't have felt that tight, but at least now t would be a little easier. Sweeping her hair back from her face, she pulled the hood of her jacket on to hide the bright white strands and looked back to make sure the other guy was still there.
